Al Andrews is the Founder and Executive Directive of Porter's Call, a refuge where artists can seek counsel and support that is specifically catered to their profession.Al started Porter's Call after noticing that most of his clients at his private practice were involved in the music business and that their careers weren't structured in a way that could work with typical therapy sessions (couldn't come in regularly, couldn't afford the hourly fee, etc.). Therefore, Al was able to create this non-profit organization which provides no cost therapy for artists.Al joins Tim to discuss mental health, specifically how it affects people in the music industry, and shares some sage advice on how to navigate life in general.00:41 - How did you come up with the name Porter's Call?02:40 - What lead you to start Porter's Call?06:49 - What are some of the consistent challenges you see from new artists?12:53 - What are some red flags that you see from people that are going through something? How do we as an observer give them the help they need without coming off aggressive? You can learn more about Porter's Call here: https://www.porterscall.com/

Twenty-one years ago Al Andrews started Porter's Call, a nonprofit that offers counsel and support to touring musicians. Thousands of lives have been impacted by the work that Al and his team do behind the scenes as they come alongside recording artists to work through their challenges. But the truth is, we're all up against some of the same challenges that recording artists face. Have you ever struggled with comparison or criticism or even how to have a healthy relationship with social media? This conversation with Al shifted my mindset about some of these things and I'd imagine you'll be thinking a bit differently by the end of this episode, too. If we want to build a winning team, we need to learn to deal with comparison and criticism and prioritize mental health both at work and at home. And Al is about to help us take steps towards health. In this week's show, Taylor talks to husband, father, motivational speaker, cancer survivor and fellow podcast host, Réal Andrews, host and producer of Getting Real With Réal. Réal talks about the connective power of listening, how we can empower others through empowering ourselves, and the power of steeping outside of your comfort zone. KEY TAKEAWAYS Our jobs do not define who we are. Far too often, we see people through the filter of the role they perform, or the career they choose, but we must see the human first. People are, and always have been, more insular than we like to admit. This is why listening is so important a sense to embrace. It allows us to reconnect with humanity without having to be present in other ways. So many of us have things we deal with in private, but are left lost by the influence of social media, which encourages perfection without flaws. We need to surround ourselves with people who can raise us up and show us the beauty of life. We need to be made to feel as though we mater by others, and to pay this feeling forward to others in need. BEST MOMENTS 'I always come from a place of love' 'It's reconnecting us through one of our senses' 'I'm really about service. I've had an incredible life' 'It's the saddest thing in the world, to go through your entire life thinking you don't matter' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Adventures Of Self ABOUT THE GUEST Réal Andrews has gone from broke mind, body and spirit (living paycheck to paycheck) to a 7-figure income earner. Being successful isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. I mean, look at the headlines. We can all name a few celebrities who crumbled under the pressure of fame and fortune. While well-known artists may deal with the problems of success on an amplified level, most successful leaders have similar struggles and are in danger of the same downfalls. That’s why I’m so excited about this week’s episode on the Building a StoryBrand podcast. I sit down with Al Andrews, the founder and executive director of Porter’s Call, a service that counsels and supports recording artists. Al has a client list with names you’d certainly recognize so he’s very familiar with the problems fortune brings. As he shares his wisdom about how he helps his clients stay healthy and grounded, you’ll find help as a leader too. After listening to this episode, you’ll learn 10 paradigm shifts you need to make as a leader on the road to success. http://buildingastorybrand.com/64
