Today's show features a conversation with Charles Burnett, who Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh credit as one of America's greatest filmmakers. His creative works tell personal and intimate stories – exploration of culture, relationships, social justice, mental illness, discrimination, and love. He was born in Mississippi in 1944 but moved to Watts in South Los Angeles in 1947. Killer of Sheep, based on his life in Watts, was his student thesis film at UCLA but it wasn't until he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017 that it began to be seen. It was his first full-length feature and took five years to complete, and it set him apart, even at a young age, as a great filmmaker. The '60s were not necessarily kind to Black filmmakers and complicated music rights kept Killer of Sheep away from wide distribution until Steven Soderberg took it under his wing and helped restore it. He also cleared the music rights and found distribution. It has since been admitted into the Library of Congress and called a national treasure. Other films from Charles include “The Annihilation of Fish” with James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave; My Brother's Wedding, The Glass Shield, and To Sleep With Anger starring Danny Glover. Martin Scorcese was quoted in a review by Daniel Borrero, saying, “Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a unique voice that is uniquely and completely his own. I am honored to be speaking with Charles Burnett and am grateful for his candor about the industry and his gracious depiction of unfolding events in his life. We can all learn from him. Most businesses have leadership teams skilled in analytics and logic. It makes sense. The language of the boardroom in big businesses requires this, and even in small organizations the majority of people at the top lean towards traditional left-brain or analytical skills - the skills that are measured by success in examinations and traditional teaching methods. This is fine, but it lacks balance. Too much left-brain analytical thinking means that right-brain thinking, gut instinct and the kind of creativity that can lead to step changes are less valued. If every decision is based on evidence and proven techniques, there isn't any room for judgements based on instinct guided by experience which can lead to real improvements and new ways of moving forward. The book, A Year of Creativity: 52 smart ideas for bosting creativity, innovation and inspiration at work, will allow you to stop looking in the rear-view mirror only, and instead create exponential growth and innovation. We are living through a rapidly changing era where artificial intelligence (AI) and large learning models (LLM) like ChatGPT and Bard, among others, are revolutionizing working practices. However, when everyone is using these tools, where is the edge that can lift your business above the norm? The answer lies in developing your creativity, and that of your team. It's you who can make the difference. People sometimes misunderstand creativity. This book explains that all creativity comes from somewhere, and often from mashing up different existing ideas from different places, to create something new. Every creative person stands on the shoulders of others. This is how creativity and innovation work; it is to be encouraged. As Josh Goldstine, President of Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc, wrote in the foreword to the book: "From advanced machine learning to the latest breakthroughs in generative AI, there is no question that technology is forever changing our world, from how we solve problems to how we drive human behaviour. The insights and possibilities are truly profound and, though perhaps scary at times, nonetheless exciting. Yet for all the promise, technology cannot kill the inherent value of human creativity which empowers us to explore uncharted territory and dream beyond the confines of what has come before. We must always make space for surprise and discovery. Discovery is such an essential and powerful human experience - a bit like falling in love." Perhaps the overriding reason to adopt the strategies of this book is that it will make you happier. You unlock a part of yourself that isn't bound by rules or customs, that is open to possibility. It's more fun to work with creativity, and your team will benefit from this as well. Therefore, of course, so will your clients, customers, suppliers and partners. Artificial intelligence certainly allows much decision-making to be automated, at speed and at scale. Take a trip abroad, for example. In the 1950s you would have to visit your bank and change money into travellers' cheques. In the 1990s you could use your credit card abroad, but if you had not informed your bank that you were travelling in the first place your credit card would be frozen. Today, thanks to fintech innovation and artificial intelligence, your bank cards will work seamlessly in most cases everywhere in the world. But as better AI fuels more of the workplace, a paradox arises. The Paradox of Automation recognizes that automation can be positive, with fewer people needed for mundane jobs that robots can carry out faster and tirelessly. But when something goes wrong, we're more reliant than ever on human judgement and creativity to spot mistakes, correct them and improve systems for the future. Efficient automation makes humans more important, not less. It also levels the playing field in mature markets, meaning that competitive advantage lies in those organizations which fuel differentiation with creativity. How the...

As real estate agents, we work hard to win leads and listings…but we lose 75% of them before they buy or sell again. That's because most clients pick a new agent in their next transaction. Since the original agent doesn't reach out to them or stay in front of them, they might not even remember their name. All of this is unavoidable. Since it costs 10 times more to get a new client than to keep our current customers, our marketing dollars should be spent on the latter. Staying top of mind with clients is as simple as providing frequent value over their entire homeownership journey. How do we retain future transactions years in advance? In this episode, I'm joined by the COO of Kukun, Scott Langmack. He shares how their platform helps agents stay in touch and in front of past clients. You should be spending your very first marketing dollar on keeping your current clients. -Scott Langmack Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why agents lose most of their clientsMost real estate agents will walk with the seller until the transaction ends. Why do we need to shift to walking alongside them throughout their entire home ownership journey? Where your first marketing dollars should goIt costs 5-10 times more to get a new client. Can focusing on keeping our current customers slash our marketing budgets significantly? The nosy neighbor strategy Kukun gives agents alerts to things like potential remodels and additions. How can we use this kind of information to provide value to clients? Guest Bio Scott Langmack is the COO of Kukun, overseeing product, marketing, analytics, investor relations, and more. Prior to Kukun, Scott led global marketing for the largest division of Microsoft, was VP of marketing at Wilson Sporting Goods, and Director of Worldwide Marketing at Pepsi Cola. Karen Bolt, the Development Executive for actor and activist Danny Glover, and an accomplished Independent Producer, is a close friend of our OWC RADiO host, Cirina Catania. Over the years, Karen and Cirina have collaborated on several of Mr. Glover's projects, including insightful interviews with Bob Moses head of the Algebra Project in San Francisco and one of the key instigators of the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. They also shared memorable experiences in Salt Lake City during the filming of "Just a Dream," directed by Danny Glover. Karen's impressive portfolio includes award-winning short films like "The Secret Weapon: Yesterday is Today" and "The McHenry Trial-Don't Judge a Kid by Their Hoodie," which have collectively garnered over 147 awards. In this episode, she shares invaluable advice for aspiring independent producers, drawing from her extensive experience in the industry. Cirina says, "As a poignant aside, after we hung up, I realized that our conversation reminded me of the fact that it has been 60 years since the Civil Rights Act was passed—a milestone closely tied to the legacy of Bob Moses, a key figure in that movement. Jacob Young starred in over 2,000 TV episodes and numerous films, beginning at a very young age on soaps. One role that garnered him international celebrity was as Luke and Laura's son on the General Hospital! We wanted to share his story with OWC listeners because this is truly an example of a "good guy winning," He remains humble, shrugging off the fact that People Magazine featured him on its cover as the world's sexiest man, and he has found success in TV, Film, and Music. This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with friend and colleague, Warren Schorr, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Global Licensing & Experiences at Crayola, to hear more about how he not only Reinvented his career path, but is currently Reinventing one of the world's most well-known and beloved brands. Warren has previously held positions as Executive Director of Worldwide Marketing and Retail Development at MGM, Director of Licensing Sales at 20th Century Fox, and Senior Account Executive at Warner Bros. Warren's inherent creativity and non-linear thinking, which have been evident since his early childhood, shines through in every capacity of his work. Creative individuals are often drawn to fields that allow them to express their unique perspectives and ideas, and Warren's wide imagination suggests that he is no exception. While working at Warner Bros. Stores, Warren quickly learned the importance of Licensing and the vast opportunities that were available within the industry. This was a turning point for him to find his way to Crayola. In his position, he aims to keep the company fresh, relevant and authentically aligned with the company's mission and vision - to help parents and educators raise creatively alive kids and ask the question, “what if?” Warren has been a pivotal contributor on projects such as the “Crayola Experience,” “Colors of the World,” “Colors of Kindness” and many more, that are the physical manifestations of the company's mission and one of the reasons that make Warren to be excited about his beloved work each and every day. Tune in for a colorful and thought-provoking conversation! Some powerful takeaways from today's episode: A company's mission / a personal mission should be at the forefront of everything that is done. Keeping the consumer at the center of attention while creating new programs is fundamental for success. Collaborations will either open up a marketplace or a whole new category for you. Licensing is about constant growth and innovation. Fun fact: Crayola Scent is the 18th most recognized scent in the whole world. "Happy Like Joplin," is a movie from French director Jean-Baptiste Mauduit and we wanted to share it with you. Mauduit says, "I always wanted to make a short that encompassed all forms of filmmaking from live action to animation. During the development phase of 'Happy Like Joplin, "' I could see how the internal expressive nature of the characters allowed for these stylistic choices." A stone carver by trade, Mauduit is a self-taught filmmaker. He watched tutorials from Mark Spencer on line to learn Motion, downloaded Affinity Photo and Procreate for his iPad, filmed with Blackmagic cameras, and a work of art was born. Truly an independent film, he operated on a near zero budget with a crew of two. This is truly a labor of love. Listen in and learn a lot about filmmaking and life. The film will be coming out soon, but you can watch a trailer at the movie's website HERE. If you enjoy our podcast, please subscribe and tell all your friends about us! We love our listeners. Here comes the “Normal Computing” news of the week! What is “Normal Computing”? Stuff about Microsoft, Apple, Google, and the like. Big Tech. The “Big 5”. Mainstream. You know. “Normal”.Microsoft drops “Office” name… “Microsoft is now 365”In “well that's a dumb idea” news… Microsoft is officially killing off their “Microsoft Office” branding — which has been a cornerstone of the company for over 30 years — and renamed their office suite… “Microsoft 365”.As someone who worked on the Microsoft Office development team for many years, I have thoughts:* You use “Microsoft Office” to do “Office” stuff. What do you do with “Microsoft 365”? 365 stuff?* Everyone knows the “MS Office” brand. Ditching it is stupid.* The marketing and product executives at Microsoft clearly have too much time on their hands, and nothing to do.* In short: This is dumb.Apple makes new, colored iPads with USB-C“We're so excited to bring the completely redesigned iPad to our most advanced iPad lineup ever,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With a large 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, powerful A14 Bionic chip, a first-ever landscape front camera, fast wireless connectivity, USB-C, and support for incredible accessories like the new Magic Keyboard Folio, the new iPad delivers more value, more versatility — and is simply more fun.”Quick thoughts:* USB-C! Huzzah!* They moved the front facing camera to make it more logical. Good move.* Colors are cool. Reminds me of when the iMacs got multiple colors.* Strangely, it appears the stylus (Apple Pencil) is not USB-C. So it needs an adapter. Odd. This seems like it must be temporary.* Still no expandable storage.* Still no replaceable battery.Prices start at $449 (without the stylus or keyboard) and go up from there.GitHub Copilot InvestigationA new website has launched to collect stories of people who believe their licenses and copyrights have been violated by Microsoft's GitHub Copilot.“We're investigating a potential lawsuit against GitHub Copilot for violating its legal duties to open-source authors and end users.”“Microsoft and OpenAI must be relying on a fair-use argument. In fact we know this is so, because former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman claimed during the Copilot technical preview that “training [machine-learning] systems on public data is fair use”.Well—is it? The answer isn't a matter of opinion; it's a matter of law. Naturally, Microsoft, OpenAI, and other researchers have been promoting the fair-use argument. Nat Friedman further asserted that there is “jurisprudence” on fair use that is “broadly relied upon by the machine[-]learning community”. But Software Freedom Conservancy disagreed, and pressed Microsoft for evidence to support its position. According to SFC director Bradley Kuhn:”“[W]e inquired privately with Friedman and other Microsoft and GitHub representatives in June 2021, asking for solid legal references for GitHub's public legal positions … They provided none.”Firefox version 106 gets… sneaker features? The One-Hundred and Sixth major version of Firefox came out this week. What's new?* Editing PDF's within Firefox.* Text recognition from images (on macOS).* Swipe navigation on Linux. But the big feature that Mozilla is touting? They partnered with a sneaker maker to promote… feelings? Or colors? Or something?“‘Independent Voices' are the voices of the past and present that create a better future,” Lascio said. “I chose this as my inspiration for the collaboration because it feels authentic to me but it also aligns with Firefox and the vision that we can make the world better, on the internet and beyond.” - Keely Lascio, Street-wear and sneaker designerThis new feature lets you tell Firefox that you are… an… “Activist”… with a “balanced intensity”… which… makes… the window border… blue? Thanks to… sneakers? This is clearly what we call a “Killer Feature” of a web browser.Oh. And they also added “Firefox View”. Which nobody will ever use.Thank you for reading and listening to The Lunduke Journal of Technology. This post is public so feel free to share it. The movie, "We Can't Go On," was filmed during the Pandemic entirely in one location, Amanda Dreschler and Michael Livingston's apartment in Echo Park, California. Dan Kneece, DP'd and advised on the production, floating around on an iPad from room to room transmitted from his apartment near the beach. Michael Valinsky pitched in, exec-produced the short and arranged for the filmmakers to borrow equipment as needed. It is a lesson in resilience and the talented couple can teach us how to create something in times of challenge. Shortly after this interview was recorded with our host, Cirina Catania, Dan passed away unexpectedly, but his memory lives on with works such as this and the friendships forged during these hard times. This is more than a lesson in how to make a film "remotely." It is a life lesson and a celebration of creativity. The motorcycle industry is constantly evolving and Amber Spencer, a triple threat as Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Damon Motorcycles, as well as a racer and bodybuilder, is now playing an active role in that transformation. As a minority in the motorcycle industry (women make up only 20% of the rider demographic, and women racers are nearly non-existent), Spencer is ready to confront the barriers to diversifying the sport. Ultimately, she sees a future where instead of being adapted for smaller bodies, motorcycles might be built from scratch, for all shapes, sizes and abilities. Hop on this ride with us now to hear how Amber is blazing the trail for women in this traditionally male-dominated industry. Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life. JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (02:33) - Amber Spencer, the girl who grew up among trucks and motorcycles - “My dad was a big influence on me. He was really into cars. He really liked motorsports. We watched F1 racing. And my parents owned a transportation business.” (05:08) - Amber's first motorcycle ride - “Just the feeling of the freedom, of not having anything around you and the environment is just right there. The road is just right there. It's just so unique, so different than being inside of a car because you're just outside in the elements and everything is just much more visceral.” (10:24) - Moving to Canada - “When I was out on a motorcycle ride I met Damon's CEO who had literally just started Damon, so that's how my career kind of took a shift from the marketing and tech side, and then I kind of started to combine that background with my motorcycling experience.” (12:49) - CES 2020, a crucial event for Damon and motorcycling - “We introduced the HyperSport to the world. It was the smartest, safest, most high-performance electric motorcycle that anybody had ever seen.” (14:55) - At Damon, Amber is committed to creating a more sustainable future - "The HyperSport is electric, but is also high tech. You also get a mobile app. You also get incredible performance. You get CoPilot. You get SHIFT.” (16:25) - On riding Damon's all-electric HyperSport bike - “You don't feel like you're on a different machine that you've never felt before. It feels very similar, but when you ride an engine, there is a certain amount of interference you get that you don't notice until you ride an electric motorcycle, and it just makes you feel like you are more one with the machine.” (23:55) - Connecting body building and motorcycling - “If you're doing a bodybuilding competition, you have to eat a certain way. You have to cut some certain foods out. You have to make sure you get to the gym X number of times a week. And it's the same for any any competition or any big goal that you wanna achieve.” (25:05) Amber's name symbolizes confidence and security; she reflects this in the way she drives: Usually, my approach is to focus on one thing at a time when I'm riding. So maybe that's my body position or maybe, it's like, maybe breaking a little later and turning in like at a different point. And, so, really focusing on my skills.” EPISODE RESOURCES: Follow Amber Spencer on https://www.instagram.com/ambers.paradox/?hl=en (Instagram) & https://twitter.com/ambsvan?s=20&t=N0a-ubWs-Opv-qAgpbkgZA (Twitter) Learn more about https://damon.com/ (Damon Motorcycles), follow them onhttps://www.instagram.com/damonmotorcycles/ ( Instagram) and join the https://lab.damon.com/ (Damon Lab) See Damon's electric https://damon.com/hypersport (HyperSport) revealed at https://youtu.be/0qbHAxdnsfI (CES 2020)...

This episode features an interview with Rachel Thornton, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for Amazon Web Services, the comprehensive cloud computing platform that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in 190 countries around the world, and is on track to surpass $51B in revenue in 2021.Rachel is a true Demand Gen Rockstar, having been hailed in the press as “Captain of the B2B Marketing Dream Team.” She joined Amazon in 2013, serving as Head of Amazon Student and then Vice President of Global Field and Partner Marketing for AWS before her promotion to her current role in January 2020. Prior to Amazon, she served as VP of Marketing for the US, Canada, and Latin America at Salesforce. On this episode, Rachel details the demand gen strategy that powers the dominant player in the cloud computing space, and shares the intricacies of the most important leadership principles that fuel successful marketing teams, from customer obsession, to diving deep, to thinking big, and much more. Key TakeawaysBe customer-obsessed. Start from the customer’s point of view and work backwards. What is your customer trying to do from a business outcome perspective? What are they trying to achieve? Knowing that helps you write a great marketing / demand gen planThink Big. In marketing, it’s critically important to give teams the freedom to really use their imaginations and get creative with new ideas Disagree and commit. For any new service, product, marketing idea, campaign, demand gen strategy, etc., it's critical to have an in-depth discussion and encourage disagreement. But at the end of the meeting, if the decision is made to go forward, then everyone must commit to making it work. Quotes“From a demand gen perspective, one of the most important leadership principles is customer obsession…When we think about our demand gen strategy and any new program or new campaign that we want to put together, we start from the customer and work backwards. I think that's probably what really helps us develop great demand gen and marketing programs.”“The best way to figure out how you're doing from a measurement perspective is go into the campaign or the demand gen program with a clear set of objectives and outputs that you're looking to get…When we're developing campaigns, we always set up what do we want the impact of this to be? How do we want to define that? And How do we want to measure it?”“Marketing is the beautiful marriage of not only creativity, but understanding data and doing a lot of data analysis. Because you want to make sure that whatever big idea you come up with–how do you test it? How do you refine it? And then how do you understand its impact? So that if you really love it, you can replicate it.”“[My advice would be to] ask a lot of questions. Sometimes I think people don't want to ask questions. They're afraid, like ‘oh, I should know this.’ I'm a big believer: Ask the questions because there are probably other people sitting there thinking of the same question you are. Ask a lot of questions, really dive deep…I just think it helps you be so much more effective and efficient.” SponsorDemand Gen Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com, the #1 Conversational Marketing platform for companies that use Salesforce and the secret weapon for Demand Gen pros. With the disappointing storyline of Wonder Woman 1984, HBOMax still needs to find the tipping point. “A blockbuster movie isn't just recognized with box office numbers. You know it's a blockbuster when you want to see it over and over.” (Keith Rauch). The long tail model for OTT platforms need the evergreen content or they will always struggle. Warner Bros brings in experienced marketer of Josh Goldstine to helm as President of Worldwide Marketing, taking over the post once occupied by Blair Rich. This is another move by studios in the attempt to accomplish a unified offering for marketing on to the ever expanding platform. At the same time, Ricky Strauss from Disney is departing after a genius tenure for the studio. S. Robert, originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was born into a family of entrepreneurs. His great grandfather immigrated to the states in the late 1800s and began building the family international wine and spirits and real estate business and his uncle and father continued in those footsteps. His mother’s grandfather and father built a successful commercial interior finishing business in Philadelphia as well so it is not surprising that a love for business was in Robert’s blood. Robert tells a story of his first entrepreneur effort at 6 years old, when he rented a wagon and filled it with candy and sold it door to door. Later, having to replace all of the candy after finding out it was stale, Robert learned that if you do something right, good things will happen. Robert went on to Pennsylvania State University and the Arizona State University Graduate School of International Management and began building businesses himself. Robert's best friend and wife of 48 years, Penny, is an actress and psychiatric art therapist. They have two sons working in business with him and both are entrepreneurs with companies of their own. Robert believes listening to our customers is key to understanding their needs and how we can add value in the process. Robert explains what he calls the “Twist Factor” and the importance of finding a place of understanding between both sides giving the opportunity for both sides to leave feeling good about the outcome. He encourages us to take our health seriously by creating balance, eating and sleeping well, practicing meditation, exercising, and developing tools to manage stress. Robert believes the secret to building massive Social Capital is to love humanity, be honest and have respect for others. He says we must be “Love Brokers”. Women especially stand to gain by associating with other women leaders in marketing. When done properly, a mentor can help women navigate career decisions, provide insights into other people’s leadership styles, and help propel them in the right direction. A mentor can help women narrow their focus and niche into an appropriate marketing discipline as experience is gained. Many corporations have mentorship programs, so Tricia recommends check with the HR department before reaching out to individuals directly. There are also programs through LinkedIn and LeanIn.org where women can find join a local LeanIn Circle and build strong relationships with other women. How Women Can Gain Visibility Early In Their Career Visibility is a key component of reaching higher levels of leadership in an organization, but the question is, how should women in marketing make themselves more visible? Tricia recommends finding projects to work on that showcase your skills and your leadership ability. Also, offer to help members of the leadership staff with tasks and projects that they are working on. Becoming visible requires time and a willingness to put in good hard work, but the return on that time usually pays off. By offering your time and skills, reaching out to other women in the organization, and making yourself available, you are showing your willingness to learn and grow. That drive and need to succeed will get you noticed. What Does It Mean To Be “Stratactical” As Women In Marketing Tricia has come up with her own word to describe an affliction that affects many women in the workforce. Women typically have a “do it all myself” mentality but need to learn to delegate tasks and think strategically while executing tactical details. A certain level of hands-on is needed to show that you can do the work, but remember that not every task is tactical, some are administrative. Women in marketing looking to be effective women leaders in marketing can only get to that pinnacle if they learn how to distinguish career priorities. Tricia warns that the more tasks you take on, the more your organization will put on your plate, but becoming a leader does not mean taking on every task. Think strategically about your career as well as the needs of your organization and execute those tactical moves needed to get you to your goals. Properly Navigating Workplace Culture Leads To Greater Opportunity Every organization has a vibe to its company culture that influences behavior and action in the workplace. Aside from linking up with a credible and invested mentor, understanding and navigating the culture in your organization will help women propel forward in their career. Attempt to understand the organization’s culture and model actions and decisions accordingly. Finding a mentor, understanding workplace culture, making yourself visible, and learning how to be stratactical are the keys to successfully becoming a woman of leadership in marketing. Tricia’s final advice for women in marketing is to be authentic, recognize your value within an organization, and realize when you’re the one holding yourself back. If you don’t have the skills needed for a role, learn them, and be enthusiastic about the drive to learn. Marketing needs women in leadership roles, and the roles are there. Follow Tricia’s advice to help you - and other women in your life - enjoy a fulfilling career in marketing.
