Today on the podcast, I speak to Jane Allan, founder of Finery - a range of unique ready-to-pour low and no alcohol cocktails. Finery is here to voice moderation. Since 2019, Finery's mission is to reshape Australasia's drinking culture with low and non-alcohol alternatives. You'll find Finery on shelves in New Zealand's largest supermarket chains and specialty liquor outlets as well as in their online store. Jane's background is in finance and commercial property. After going through a health and fitness journey in late 2018, Jane couldn't find anything that ticked the boxes for what she wanted in a refreshing, but healthier cocktail and she found herself thinking more and more about creating a beverage of her own. With no previous experience in FMCG, Jane reached out to people in the industry and step-by-step – including a few setbacks – her vision started to gain traction. What intrigued me about Jane's journey was the idea of starting a self-funded FMCG brand from scratch, family owned with no corporate backing. In a relatively short time, she has developed and launched a product that is now competing with big brands and going from strength to strength. For more information about Finery and their delicious low and no alcohol cocktails visit finerycocktails.co.nz or follow along with the Finery journey on Instagram @finerycocktailsI know you will love my kōrero with Jane as much as I did._Thank you to Bookety Book Books who are the sponsors of this episode and the first ever sponsors of this podcast. Brooke Falvey is Brisbane's very own Carrie Bradshaw. She's a journalist, turned fashion blogger / instagram star, turned stylist and model. This blond bombshell is the OG dopamine dresser, and she makes me miss my home state of Queensland with all the amazing colour and print she wears on her Instagram page, but you'll also be surprised at the clothing item she feels the MOST herself in.Learn how a conversation as a teenager with her mum in a mall about all of the 'normal women' set her on a path to accepting her (gorgeous) body how it is, and gave her the confidence to step into a modelling career even though she doesn't have the 'traditional model frame" that we were programmed to be the "only model body" growing up in the 90's.We talk about how wearing your togs in public might be bold, but please don't call it brave, and I learn about how protective Brooke is over her own sense of style (don't mess with her gold boots please!)Find Brooke on INSTAGRAM HERE, or read her blog ON HER WEBSITEThe Style Project: Season 2 is proudly sponsored by local NZ business, Finery Cocktails - living your finest life with Finery. Cassie Roma has that enviable ability to make you feel like you are the only person in the room every time she talks to you.Cassie's trademark look, with her amazing mane of curls, hats and double denim is one of her most distinct calling cards, but she didn't always have the confidence to be her true self...Self-described storytelling, public-speaking, social media + digital marketing OG with a penchant for data, creativity, strategy, & community advocacy, her kindness and joy are infectious, but life hasn't always been smooth sailing for this California girl living in NZ.In this episode, Cassie and I chat about everything from why she loves her grandfathers style, how growing up in the 90's in California wasn't amazing for her self esteem, and why we just all need to be a little bit kinder to ourselves, and each other. You can find Cassie Roma on Instagram, LinkedIn and on her website. The Style Project: Season 2 is proudly sponsored by local NZ business, Finery Cocktails - living your finest life with Finery. Welcome to After the Exit, the show where I interview CEOs after they've sold their startup and have them share the lesson they've learned about business, about relationships, and life. Today I'm really excited to introduce you to my friend Whitney Casey, recently exited CEO of Finery. Before Finery, she oversaw product development and growth at Match.com and also lived a life as a producer and/ or correspondent at CBS, CNN, Fox, ABC, and NBC - winning two Emmy's in the process. She founded Finery - a personal stylist in your back pocket (and a competitor of my previous company, Cladwell). She raised $5mil in seed funding from NEA, partnered with Match.com, and was named CNBC's top 100 startups to watch worldwide. As she was raising Series A at a $30mil valuation privacy laws began to shift so according to public sources she opted to sell to Stitch Fix for an undisclosed amount. Hope you enjoy! If you're short on time and just want to browse the lessons, go to allsmith.org/afterthexit and you can browse all of the lessons and click to a hyperlink to that specific lesson in each youtube video. Dear Manna Family, There are many things that money can buy; but for the most important things in life, money is the wrong currency. Money will buy a bed, but not sleep; Books, but not brains; Food but not appetite; Finery, but not beauty; A house, but not a home; Medicine, but not health; Luxuries, but not culture; Amusements, but not happiness; Religion, but not salvation; A passport to everywhere but heaven. We need to put money in perspective. When we buy a bed, we don’t really want the bed; what we really want is a good night’s sleep. We believe that if we only had enough money, we could buy just the right bed that would put us in dreamland for 8 hours. Money is not a good or a bad thing; it’s a tool, but it’s a tool that has limitations. We deceive ourselves when we believe that money is the universal solution to all life’s problems. That’s when greed kills contentment, and the love of money begins to consume our lives. King Solomon, one of the richest kings of his era, wrote in Proverbs 23:4 Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it. Vs 5 When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens. When you ask people how much money would be enough; the answer is almost always the same; ‘just a little bit more.’ Chasing money is like chasing your shadow; the more you grasp, the less you get. It’s like drinking salty ocean water, the more you drink, the thirstier you become. What we think we want is more; what we really need is enough. King Agur captures that thought beautifully when he writes in Proverbs 30:8 …Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, Vs 9 That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the LORD?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God. This is a prayer for contentment. It’s a prayer for neither more nor less than I need. “Feed me with the food that is my portion” is the same request as “give us this day our daily bread.” Both prayers acknowledge that God is the source and He determines our portion for each day. At Thanksgiving, we generally stuff ourselves with more than our portion for that day. Some people eat themselves right into a nap! Human nature often believes that more is better. The big question is, more of what? The real issue here is not the quantity of our earthly wealth; it’s the quality of our relationship with God. King Agur’s real concern is that too much or too little here on earth will harm his relationship with the LORD. And he acknowledges that only God knows how much or how little that is. “Too much” riches and success often deceives people into trusting earthly treasures and not the LORD. When wealth becomes our idol, we kick God to the curb, and then drive off into the sunset, ……..right over a cliff. However, poverty has its problems as well. King Agur doesn’t want poverty to tempt him to covet and steal. Too much money and he falls into pride; too little money and he falls into theft. Both harm his relationship with God. So he asks God to give him what he needs; and what he needs most of all is not earthly treasure, it’s the treasure of God Himself. The only way we will be content with whatever God chooses to provide, is when we value God Himself more than whatever He chooses to provide. Remember, God designed us to ‘do life together!’ Love and prayers, Brad ••• Subscribe to listen each week as the Manna class learns and grows together through their in-depth study of God's Word. Retailers have felt the strain from Amazon for years, but that competition is finally stretching into the shipping industry. The retail giant is continuing to build out its own delivery service as the demand for faster shipping grows. FedEx and UPS are both making strategy changes in the face of growing competition from Amazon. First, here are some retail headlines. Mobile Shopping App Mavely Launches After operating in beta since April, mobile shopping app, Mavely, officially launched last week. The app aims to reward users for purchasing and recommending products from more than 100 brands. CEO Evan Wray said the company is already seeing a buy conversion rate of up to 12 percent on products and anticipates having 30,000 users by the end of the year. According to Wray, Mavely is becoming a competitive alternative to costly social advertising and provides marketers with an efficient way of acquiring customers at half the cost of Facebook ads. M.M. LaFleur Opening Concept Store Apparel company M.M. LaFleur is opening its first concept store, M.M. To Go in Manhattan’s Financial District. Unlike the retailer’s showroom spaces where shoppers booked styling appointments and waited for items to be shipped, the new concept will have no appointments and let customers take purchases out of the store. The new concept features 10 core apparel pieces ranging from sizes zero to twenty-two. Stitch Fix Acquires Tech from Finery Popular online personal styling service, Stitch Fix, has acquired the tech of digital wardrobe startup, Finery. The startup’s technology scans user’s e-receipts for purchases, then auto-populates to digitize a virtual wardrobe that can be accessed by users to help them keep track of what they already own and assemble outfit options. With Stitch Fix facing competition from other retailers like Amazon, Express, and American Eagle who have launched their own monthly services, the new tech acquisition will provide the company a way to better serve their clients and learn more about their style needs. Walmart Piloting Healtcare Store Concept Starting next month, Walmart will pilot a new healthcare store concept in one of its Georgia locations. Walmart already runs clinics in several of its stores, but the new Georgia location will add services like dental, mental health counseling, X-rays, and audiology. The retail giant appears to be positioning itself against CVS Health, which recently announced plans to expand its Health Hub pilot to 1,500 locations by the end of 2021. With Americans facing increasing difficulties with insurance and care options, Walmart seems to be taking advantage by offering more integrated healthcare. The retail giant has reportedly been considering some sort of expansion for a while. Last year, the company was said to be considering major acquisitions in the health space. Though the acquisitions never happened, this new announcement confirms that Walmart is continuing to focus on growing in a space that’s poised for disruption. Coming up... Amazon poses as a threat to more than just retailers. FedEx and UPS are making strategy shifts as the retail giant builds its own delivery service. More after this. Fedex, UPS Facing Amazon Challenges While retailers have been battling Amazon for years, the war has finally spilled into the shipping industry. FedEx and UPS have both recently made changes in answer to Amazon’s growing competition. As Amazon continues to build out its own delivery services, the shipping companies have had to make strategy changes. FedEx has recently announced they would not be renewing two contracts with the retail giant, one of those being their Ground delivery contract. They’ve also expanded their delivery service to seven days a week. UPS has been experimenting with drone delivery and self-driving trucks as they work to modernize their services. The moves come as Amazon has invested in resources for their own delivery service. The company has been building their air fleet and offering $10,000 to employees who want to start their own local delivery business.

In episode 109, Kestrel welcomes actor and model Brooklyn Decker, and former ABC & CNN anchor Whitney Casey to show. The cofounders of FINERY, Brooklyn + Whitney have built the world’s first wardrobe operating system that reinvents how women view and interact with their closets, and style themselves. "Women will spend more money on their clothing than their education [in their lifetime]." -Brooklyn Decker, cofounder of Finery In this episode, Brooklyn and Whitney share a bit about how they ended up building a company focused on fashion - turns out, for both of them, it wasn't really the fashion industry that drew them in. Instead, they were interested in helping women's lives become a bit easier. Additionally, Brooklyn and Whitney share some of their thoughts on where they hope to take Finery in the future. It looks like not only is helping women utilize what's in their closet a priority, but also, helping women find ways to put the clothes they aren't using back into the system. The below thoughts, ideas + organizations were brought up in this chat: Mint, Slice, Tripit: apps that also help simplify your life "On average, women only wear 20% of their wardrobe." "Half a trillion dollars worth of clothes are hanging unworn in our closets." "A detailed survey of almost 2,000 women aged over 16 found that most fashion purchases see the light of day just seven times." (stat Kestrel mentioned - was featured in Daily Mail in 2015) "We’re not trying to say, ‘Don’t buy anything.’ We are trying to make you really optimize what you have." - from the below article in Business of Fashion "Finery Aims to Succeed Where Other Virtual Closets Have Not", article from Business of Fashion The RealReal, Vestiaire, thredUP, Tradesy (secondhand platforms mentioned) Explore more about FINERY here > Recommended Artist From The Intro: Mona Chalabi (found via Brother Vellies)
Finery co-founders Brooklyn Decker and Whitney Casey, in an attempt to create the ultimate virtual closet, confronted the issue that caused all the versions that came before them to fail: They removed as much manual work as they could. For inspiration, Decker and Casey looked to similar life-simplifying apps for other industries, like Mint for finances and TripIt for travel itineraries (rather than the idealistic “Clueless” closet other virtual companies have claimed to build). From there, they spent a year and a half building proprietary technology with a team of coders that can pull together every wardrobe-related online purchase a user's made by combing a linked email inbox for receipts. Decker joined the Glossy Podcast to talk about Finery's obstacles, goals and future potential. Edited highlights below.
How I Raised It - The podcast where we interview startup founders who raised capital.
Produced by Foundersuite.com, "How I Raised It" goes behind the scenes with startup founders who have raised capital. This episode is with Whitney Casey, CEO of Finery.com, a "wardrobe management platform" that helps women catalog their wardrobe. The company raised $5 million of seed funding in a deal led by New Enterprise Associates. Farfetch, BBG Ventures, Correlation Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, C Ventures, Halogen Ventures, Cotter Cunningham, Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin also participated in the round.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg's favourite episode of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip, episode 187 – a handful of words into the intro and already the rap gawds are being referenced... Whatever the number, this is a grand one right here as Pip is joined by one of the UK's finest, the Bafta winning queen Vicky McClure!Surely you will have seen Vicky's acting greatness on the big and small screen, having a HUGE part to play in the filmography of the legend Shane Meadows in films such as A Room For Romeo Brass, This Is England and the series of which the film spawned (as ‘Lol’), but if not you will most definitely be catching up after this chat with Pip, as she goes all the way into the archives, back to her days in the acting workshop where she honed her craft and improvisational skills (which would be vital in her later roles), Nottingham days, her very realistic and sobering view on her own acting profession which is very refreshing to hear, a TON of fascinating behind the scenes science on the Meadows method and the deep connection between director, cast, and overall end product, and her own collaboration with fashion label Finery. An all round podcast of pure perfection, so set aside some time and enjoy every moment. SalesFounders - Startup Sales Strategy, Venture Capital, Entrepreneur, and Sales Development

As we wrap our presents for the holidays and wrap up 2015, it's time to look back on the year that was. To help me remember the year in fashion tech, I invited Anna Crooke and Benjamin Tang, co-founders of Raw Finery Studio. RFS is a wearable tech-focused co-working space focused on supporting local fashion tech designers. Our conversation touches on everything from New York Fashion Week to Decoded Fashion Toronto to our (secret) distaste for the Apple Watch. PLUS they share a special announcement for the new year!
