One concern that people have in replacing gas-powered vehicles with electric vehicles is the time it takes to charge them. Charging an EV at home from an ordinary 110V electrical outlet is a slow process; installing a 220V outlet speeds things up considerably but it still can take all night to fully charge a car. […]
On this week's show we take a look at a device that claims it will flatten your warped vinyl. Then we ask is there anything that can be done to prevent subscribers from pausing the streaming services. We also read your email and take a look at the week's news. News: Xumo expands retail scope with Target deal Matter 1.4 now supports more smart home devices and adds new capabilities TiVo to launch smart TVs in US by year-end Apple Set For Smart Home Revolution Other: Cosm LG Display's stretchable screen is now even stretchier - The Verge Record Pi Vinyl Flattener A couple of episodes ago we talked about a turntable that uses suction to make warped records flat. Ara joked about taking a blow dryer and heating up the record and then just unwarping it. Well it turns out that there is a product that essentially does this. One of our listeners, Matthew Dropco, pointed us to a product that flattens your vinyl! The Record Pi ($275) vinyl flattener is an innovative solution tailored for fixing warped vinyl records, featuring a patent-pending integrated system comprising three essential components: the Record Pi Device, Record Pi Temperature Controller, and Record Pi Heating Case. The Record Pi Device is engineered using premium steel alloy, ensuring an even distribution of heat while securely holding the record to apply uniform flattening pressure with heavy metal alloy plates and protective Groove Guards. The Temperature Controller offers precise temperature regulation within 1°F of the target range of 100 to 145°F, allowing users to remotely adjust settings via internet connectivity using either Google Android or Apple iOS devices, provided a compatible Wi-Fi router is available. The Record Pi Heating Case not only warms the device during use but also serves as a practical storage solution when not in operation. The product comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee (with the buyer covering return shipping) and a two-year limited warranty, providing confidence in its durability and effectiveness. Weighing 16 lbs, the Record Pi is designed for US standard voltage of 110V but can also be used internationally with the appropriate voltage converter, ensuring its versatility for vinyl enthusiasts everywhere. What can streaming services do to keep customers from pausing subscriptions? We found an article over at TheStreamable.com opining about “What can streaming services do to keep customers from pausing subscriptions”. We have some thoughts on this as well! As streaming services in the U.S. approach market saturation, the focus has shifted from acquiring new customers to retaining current ones. Recent data reveals a significant rise in viewers pausing their subscriptions, increasing from 29.8% in 2022 to 34.2% in early 2024. Many consumers are not dissatisfied with their services; rather, they find it hard to justify the cost until new desirable content is available. To address this issue, streaming providers are exploring various strategies. Current efforts include enhancing bundling options, as surveys indicate that bundled services can significantly decrease cancellations. Recent bundles, such as the Disney+, Hulu, and Max combination, aim to encourage user loyalty. Additional strategies could involve allowing customers to temporarily pause their subscriptions while keeping their accounts active. For example, Hulu could offer a one-time 30-day pause option at a lower rate, such as on an ad-supported plan, to keep users engaged without full financial commitment. Overall, creative retention strategies beyond simple discounts may be essential for preventing subscription pauses.

10:14pm: Leading the 2nd hour tonight is 2023 quarterly guest, Susie Bulloch from Hey Grill Hey. Susie and I will get you ready for Memorial Day, we will see who she would put into the 2023 BBQ HOF class in a few weeks and we will also talk about her upcoming trip to Memphis in May. If you are a fan of Susie's products, we will also talk about her line and what's new or coming down the pike in 2023.10:35pm: Coming out of the bullpen tonight is the product manager for Char-Broil, Seth Sawyer. Seth was on for the first time about this point last year and we briefly discussed both the "Edge" electric grill and the "Cruise" gas grill. Tonight, given the talk of more and more electric grills "potentially" coming to market, we will dive a bit deeper into this "Edge" product and see how it might be able to meet your needs if you live in a spot that doesn't allow "live-fire" cookers, or perhaps, you don't like dealing with any of that stuff at your own home. We will break it all down and see if 110V can get it done or if 220V is really the true future for this segment.Support The BBQ Central Show SponsorsPrimo GrillsPitts & Spitts BBQ Pits - Use "bbqcentral" at checkout ($500+) for free spice packBig Poppa SmokersFireboardCookin PelletsPit Barrel CookerThe Butcher Shoppe - Save 10% When You Mention "The BBQ Central Show"JC Newman Cigars - Try The Angel Cuesta Brand
Music courtesy of Bellevue Bluegrass Trio at Bellevue Presbyterian Church, used with permission, recorded by iPhone.California's electric problems may soon be over — Two months ago (July 25) it was reported that a turbine exploded at Hoover Dam. The report was incorrect — it was a transformer fire. Generating Turbines are not off-the-shelf equipment, of course neither are transformers, but there are many of them, and they are much easier to repair they are an exterior part, not like a turbine and interior part.Instead of not charging Tesla's, perhaps housewives in LA can “line dry” their clothes, go back to hand washing dishes or turn off every other light in their home. Any one of these strategies will ease the shortage.PS You may not use solar energy to charge your Tesla, it requires 220V & we live in a 110V society.

A very busy week on the farm and nothing will stop the busy farmers... Not even sinus colds or 80th birthdays...Blind Hog has the deed done; electric is in the conduit and in the nice trench, already hooked up to the main power box as well as the new breaker box in the old goat barn. Acorn has been a snotty thing, but has also been quite busy. Almost 40 new trees planted all around the yard- long leaf pine, Norway spruce, witch hazels and bald cypress. Now to fill in the trench, complete the transition from 110V power supple to 220V but the farmers can do it. Gallons of chicken soup, full of "vit-ah-minns" and loaded with garlic, jalapenos and everything else from the fridge have been consumed and Acorn stewed those two roosters today- more soup to be made for tomorrow!

The Rivian R1T modular camp kitchen seems to deliver as promised, with a full set of utensils and a makeshift kitchen sink to boot. - The entire kitchen comes in three modules, stored in the electric pickup's Gear Tunnel. The R1T camp kitchen includes an induction cooktop for at least two pots or pans and a removable sink with a hose reel to rinse off dirty dishes, utensils, food, and more. - The sink seems to be attached to a water tank module. It does not have a drain but can be detached to throw out the water. The sink could also be used as a basket when removed from its module based on the video. The sink's cover seems like it also functions as a cutting board. - The R1T's kitchen modules are easily detached from the Gear Tunnel shuttle, which is 65” long, 18.1” wide, and 20.3” in height. It includes features like LED lighting, a 12V outlet, a 110V outlet, and a safety release. The City grandee Lord Grimstone, who now leads the Government's Office for Investment, told The Telegraph he is in discussions with a raft of potential investors in the UK to capitalise on an “auto-Renaissance”. - Investment decisions are due from Japanese carmaker Nissan over a new gigafactory in Sunderland for electric car batteries. Stellantis, the owner of Vauxhall's Ellesmere port, has held talks over making electric vehicles on the site. The South Korean duo LG and Samsung are also reportedly in discussions over major gigafactory investments, while West Midlands carmaker JLR is looking to source batteries from a UK plant. - Lord Grimstone said: “I think we are in the middle of what I call the “auto-Renaissance” because all the manufacturers have been caught out across Europe and the UK by the speed at which the customer - not the manufacturer, not the Government - is moving towards electric vehicles. “Every single one of them I talk to - all of them - are changing their production schedules, bringing forward new models and reconfiguring their whole global footprint. - “This is a huge opportunity for the UK. Out of this kind of massive change, you are either going to catch the wave, or if you don't it is not going to be there for another 20 or 30 years.” Original Source : https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2021/06/26/britain-aims-capture-8bn-electric-car-spending-spree/ 2023 AUDI E-TRON FACELIFT RUMOURED TO GET NEW BATTERY, MORE RANGE - The automaker began delivering the E-Tron crossover in 2019, and that model is due for a mid-cycle refresh. However, instead of the usual design tweaks automakers make, Audi is rumoured to be updating the electrified powertrain, too. - Not only will the E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback receive a new battery, which will increase its range, but the two will also receive improved electric motors that are more efficient. Autocar's sources say that the E-Tron will deliver more than 373 miles of range for both variants. The current 95-kilowatt-hour battery delivers 249 miles of range in the UK. That's nearly one out of every five electric vehicles sold in those 10 countries. - Tesla, still carried by just the top-selling Model 3, is #2, holding 10% of EV sales. Renault is not far behind, with 9.2% EV market share, but expect Tesla to grow its lead notably in June, and probably further through the end of 2021. Selling electronics The risks or rewards of selling electronics I recently found your podcast on Spotify so please excuse me if this has been addressed already, I have a lot of catching up to do! I live in Australia and am researching a home electrical appliance to be sold through Amazon Australia FBA. I believe there is a high demand and little competition particularly from sellers native to Australia. Before I do the hard numbers I would like to know your thoughts on whether an electrical product is too ambitious for a new seller to take on ie. Is the risk of potential electrical defects worth the monetary risk with returns and refunds? To clarify, the product would be sourced from China. Can you advise on any other risks or rewards you may be aware of when importing such a product? Have you done so yourself? Would love to hear from you. Thank you for what you do. I really enjoy listening to your podcast. Please feel free to air this if you wish. Regards Carly Thank you so much for the question Carly Let's talk about the good, the bad, and things to know You say you will be importing from China, so I'm assuming you are doing private label. That makes things easier for you because you will not be dealing with brand restrictions or used deficient items. Selling electric products can be a huge money maker because everyone loves buying them. Make sure the order gets inspected and also let the vendor in China know that you want any broken or defective returns to be free in your next order. Make sure they are protected for the Amazon drop test (6-foot drop test) nicely packaged and protected. Try to have a humidity resistant package if the product is sensitive to moisture If the product is rechargeable, it will have a built-in battery, therefore Amazon will ask you for a dangerous goods form. A Hazmat form. At the time of filling your FBA shipping form, they will give you a form to fill, but that can delay you a week or 2, so do that early. The electronic category is very competitive (mainly because the sales are good), but the majority of sellers will never get to page 1 unless they find a niche inside the niche. IE an addon to a product that everyone has (not cellphones lol) Electric products are exclusive to each platform because of power settings in each country. For example, an American DVD player will not work in Europe unless they buy an adapter. Because one has 110V the other has 220V and the plugs are different too. And of course the same applies to Australia. Mains voltage in Australia is 230V 50Hz, so make sure to let the manufacturer know it's for Australia and even send them a picture of your plugs. Also, make sure to get a sample. And one of the most important things to know is Australian law. There are 3 levels of electric equipment. (and for simplicity they are called level 1, level 2 and level 3) In 2013 or 14 the (EESS) in Queensland, introduced some new rules about importing electric equipment into Australia, and then those rules spread to Western Au Too. EESS is (Electrical Equipment Safety System) Please make sure to read about it on the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council Thanks Quin Amorim

Add a Cross Country Train Trip to Your Bucket List Taking a cross country train trip is not exactly the cheapest way to travel across the country, but taking a train across the US (or another country) will definitely be an experience you won't forget. You can kick back, look at a new landscape that you don't normally see on the road, and meet new people. window.dojoRequire(["mojo/signup-forms/Loader"], function(L) { L.start({"baseUrl":"mc.us19.list-manage.com","uuid":"c98f8ee80dad6b3294c16e167","lid":"2d6f35300e","uniqueMethods":true}) }) In this podcast episode, I interviewed Luke Menasco on his experience from taking an Amtrak train across the country from Florida to Central Oregon, which took him 5 days from start to finish. You could extend your cross country train trip in the US by using a Rail Pass from Amtrak that allows you to spend up to 15 days, 30 days, or 45 days exploring the country and taking multiple segments and stops so it breaks up your trip a bit. Check out Luke's Video on his Amtrak Cross Country Train Trip How much did the cross-country train trip cost on Amtrak? The train ticket was $369, coach seats the whole trip. Sleeper cars can range anywhere from $200 to as much as $1,000 per leg of the trip, depending on the time of year. How long did it take to travel cross-country on Amtrak, and what was the route? The train left Orlando, Florida on Monday evening, and it arrives in Portland, Oregon on Friday Morning. So 4 nights total. My trip was a bit farther as I had to go from Portland, Oregon to Chemult, Oregon, which arrived Friday evening. Orlando---Washington DC---Chicago---Portland Were you on the train the entire time? No. There were two extended layovers - one in Washington DC for about 9 hours. There is a metro station at Union Station - so easy access to get anywhere you need to go. In Chicago, my layover was about 5.5 hours. Enough time to get out, see some sights and get some food. You can check your bags at the train stations as well, for about $10. What were some must-have items on the train? Earplugs and an eye mask were crucial. Those two in particular. Earplugs to drown out the noise of other passengers, the noise of the train on the rails, the train horn. Crucial. Eye mask because there are lights in the train at night. It's dim like an airplane would be, but still lighting here and there. Snacks. Tablet. Headphones. Chargers. Each seat has 2 110V outlets, and each of the tables in the observation cars does as well, so power is never an issue. Neck pillow. Blanket. You didn't mention the food. How was the food? I would say that train food is slightly better than airplane food. The menu in the dining car on all of the trains was the same - so it did get a bit old. For breakfast, prices ranged from $8 to $14, lunch $12-$15 and dinner $16-$25. There is also a snack bar that has candy, snacks, drinks (beer and wine), as well as some sandwiches and burgers. The service in the dining car was very good, and the staff was all very friendly. Traveling alone, meals in the dining car were always fun because you're typically paired with 1-3 strangers. So you're typically exchanging stories for around an hour. Here is a link to the dining page on Amtrak: Sleeping in coach on Amtrak. Was it that bad? I'd say, yes. If it were an overnight trip, not so bad. Even 2 nights. But by night 3 and 4 - it started to take a toll. The first 2 nights of the trip I had someone in the seat right next to me. That changes the experience quite a bit, as it's pretty close quarters. Having two seats to yourself makes a pretty big difference. Not in comfort as much as just feeling a bit of privacy. Comfort wise, it's just difficult to really get comfortable in those seats. There's not really any getting around that. Earplugs and an eye mask are pretty invaluable. // How were the bathrooms? Were there showers on the train? The bathrooms were similar to an airplane bathroom.
Thomas Alva Edison.
On today's episode I'm sharing my full review of the 110V, 1.75HP SawStop cabinet saw I received as part of an advertising deal back in October of 2012. As I had mentioned in the previous video "Hello New Saw", I wanted to spend a little time with the saw before I shared my opinions about it. And that's exactly what I do in this episode. It's been a little over 6 months and I've had a chance to build a few projects with the new saw, this has allowed me to get a "real world" feel for whether a saw like this is worth the investment for a home woodworker or serious hobbyist. Of course what would a SawStop review be without firing off the braking system? So we do that today too, in fact we do it TWICE just to show off that flesh isn't the only conductive material that could set off the system.
