This week on Chasing Artists with XENJA, we chat with creativity coach, actress, writer, and teaching artist Jennifer Seifert about healing through creativity with the Artists Way and the creation of CRxEATIVITY. Guest Bio Jennifer Seifert is the producer behind the CRxEATIVITY Festivals and the facilitator for the Artist's Way workshops.  The Festivals have focused on Healing through Creativity and Women and Empowerment.  Between the #metoo movement and her own traumatic health event in 2017, Jennifer looked to Creativity as medicine for body, mind and soul.   CRxEATIVITY's incredible support system of artists embraced this concept, and along with the nonprofit organizations, Moms Demand Action, RAICES and the Cancer Support Community of Pasadena, Jennifer has emerged as a game changer in Altadena.   Jennifer Seifert is a Jack Nicholson Scholarship Award winner and alumnus of the University of Southern California, is a certified life coach, actress, writer and teaching artist.  As an actress, Jennifer is an Ovation Award winner, and has worked with such theaters as A Noise Within, Pasadena Playhouse, Shakespeare Festival LA, The Actors Gang and The Falcon Theatre (now Garry Marshall Theatre) with Troubadour Theatre Co.  Jennifer produced her own short film, To Desdemona, Love Juliet and can be seen in the Academy Award nominated film, In America, and opposite Academy Award winner, Anjelica Huston in Huff.  She is thrilled to be teaching theatre arts again in South Central Los Angeles with CRE, and facilitating CRxEATIVITY groups.  Ever since the shooting at Columbine, Jennifer has been passionate about eliminating gun violence in this nation, and has recently followed through with a variety of other humanitarian missions, including her film Inside a Feather. Her CRxEATIVITY Festival raised money for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and her CRxEATIVITY groups of 2017 donated funds to Habitat for Humanity in the aftermath of the hurricanes in Houston and Puerto Rico.  Jennifer also continues to tour the country with Playfair,  and has found a new voice with Expressing Motherhood , and  Listen to Your Mother. CRxEATIVITY's Artist's Way groups are now a hybrid of Jennifer Seifert's own social/emotional curriculum and creativity coaching, hands on creations and writing, and a navigation through Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way.  As CRxEATIVITY has shifted to an online platform, (although, will eventually go back to “in person” meetings as well), participants have discovered that the process can be more flexible as the artists can participate from the comfort of their homes.  Discussions of Brene Brown's work, and Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magichave become an important part of the connection that occurs within the 12 week program, and the leaps, and breakthroughs that artists have made throughout the years, (both in person and online), have been nothing short of incredible.  Past participants and CRxEATIVITY Festival performers  have gone on to be nominated for Emmy Awards, write and direct films, produce and star in web-series(that have then been sold),nominated for Tony Awards, win OFTA Awards, design costumes for film and music stars, speak for TED Talks, book series regular roles on TV shows, create websites, sculpt and design for Disney, start blogs, write and collaborate on books, book film, TV and professional theatre jobs, write and produce one person shows, win awards for short films, write for Expressing Motherhood, write and produce for Disney, create and sell paintings, perform in World Tours, produce CRxEATIVITY Festivals, earn college degrees, have babies, find some semblance of balance and joy in this creative, beautiful life.  For more information about Jennifer and CRxEATIVITY visit www.jenniferseifert.com  Links to Guest www.jenniferseifert.com @crxeativity Show Notes @iamxenja www.xenja.org www.xenja.bandcamp.com Produced by XENJA Music by XENJA Audio Editing by High Noon Audio

Oscar-winning actor/writer/director/producer Tim Robbins shares how he originally developed his latest project Bobo Supreme as a movie with the director Adam McKay, but he was inspired to adapt his screenplay for an auditory medium when the pandemic shut down film production. He reveals how he managed to record with 35 different actors in 35 different locations simultaneously during quarantine, and how it has given him a renewed appreciation for the radio dramas of Orson Welles and his Mercury Radio Theater.  We talk about taking down tyrants through satire, comedy as a welcome break from our toxic addiction to doom scrolling, and how Tim’s career in Hollywood has given him some insight into the fragile, narcissistic id of Donald Trump.  Tim offers some hopeful speculation on how the movie business may transform in the wake of Covid-19 and what it will take to reopen live theaters such as his own repertory group The Actors Gang.  Plus, how Joe Biden won Tim over, the enduring relevance of his film Bob Roberts, and why you probably won’t see a sequel to that seminal political mockumentary any time soon. At 6’ 5”, Tim Robbins is the tallest actor ever to win an Academy Award, but until they start handing out statuettes for height alone, he’ll have to be content with a regular old Oscar and slew of Golden Globes recognizing his talent. Cutting such an imposing figure could’ve made it easy for Hollywood to serve him up time and again as the loveable, lumbering galoot he played so successfully in his breakout role as Bull Durham’s “Nuke” LaLoosh. But even a passing glance at his long filmography is a startling reminder that Robbins is an artist whose physicality is completely overshadowed by his versatility. He plays innocent and shrewd, hero and scoundrel, with such careful shadings and intelligence that watching him, we’re kept tantalizingly off balance. His boyish, wide-open countenance can conceal a menace that’s all the more disturbing because it’s felt more than seen. In other words, Robbins is a master manipulator – he’s playing us, but gleefully and with the best of intentions. He’s the naïve screwball in the Coen brothers’ Hudsucker Proxy, and the new neighbor in Arlington Road who’s so nice and normal that we can never quite put a finger on why something about him just doesn’t seem right. Though inarguably well deserved, the acclaim he’s received for his astounding performances in films like The Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River and The Player can make it too easy to overlook some of his most important contributions to his craft, as well as how he’s chosen to shape his career. While still in college he founded The Actors’ Gang, which changed the landscape and status of L.A. theater and created an incubator for both great plays and talented young actors. His passion for theater also pervaded the chaotically joyous, collaborative spirit of Bob Roberts, a film Robbins wrote, directed and starred in his early 30’s. Long before “mockumentary” became common film vocabulary, it incisively and uproariously presaged the media’s trivialization of politics. Come to think of it, it’s mandatory election year viewing. Though he admits his success has put him in a position to pick and choose, Robbins has always been an admirable purist, writing, directing, producing and acting in only the projects that speak to his sense of moral and artistic integrity. He knows his legacy may not matter to the public, but it matters to him. That integrity – and his standing as one of our true auteurs – prompted Robert Altman to call him the second coming of Orson Welles. High praise; but like Welles, his standards don’t frequently align with those of his industry, making his film projects increasingly rare. Our conversation reminded us of the treasure we have in Robbins, and as much as we hate to bother a 6’ 5” former hockey player, we respectfully demand more.

Actor/director Tim Robbins discusses how his new HBO series HERE AND NOW is tapping into the anxiety of America in 2018 and why his classic political mockumentary BOB ROBERTS is more relevant now than ever.  He says Harvey Weinstein reminds him of the shady operators he knew growing up in New York’s Greenwich Village, he recalls studying real studio execs for his role in Robert Altman’s THE PLAYER, and he remembers Altman's mentoring Tim's leap from actor to director.  He discusses how he funded his first play while he was still a struggling actor, how his latest play THE NEW COLOSSUS is putting personal faces to the immigration issue, and why he’s using The Actors Gang to bring theatre into California prisons.  Plus Tim opens up about turning 60, weighs in on the current struggle for the soul of the Democratic Party, and recounts the time he heckled Henry Kissinger outside of a famous celebrity restaurant. THE NEW COLOSSUS is playing now through May 12 at The Actors Gang in Culver City, CA.  Visit www.theactorsgang.com for tickets or to learn more.  See Tim in Alan Ball’s excellent new series HERE AND NOW with a subscription to HBO, HBO GO, or HBO NOW.  Keep up with Tim at www.timrobbins.net or on twitter at @TimRobbins1.  Today's podcast was sponsored by Dollar Shave Club and Policy Genius.

Should we just adapt to climate change? The question raises the hackles of environmentalists and global warming deniers alike—yet it’s one we should be asking sooner rather than later. That was the consensus of New York Times environmental reporter Andrew Revkin, UCLA climate scientist Alex Hall, and UCLA environmental historian Jon Christensen during a panel discussion at The Actors’ Gang, an event put on in partnership with the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and with Environmental Humanities at UCLA.
