Today's show is packed with all our updates on the OCTOBER 7 play. The performance at Princeton was incredible, and now we're gearing up to perform at UCLA on Monday – the anniversary of the attack. The all-star cast includes actor Kevin Weisman, who you may remember from the ABC thriller series Alias. This performance is already controversial, which is all the more reason to support it. You can get tickets here: https://hillelatucla.wufoo.com/forms/wobl4rt0l4kxof/ We also interview the fascinating producers of the new movie Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin. Emmanuel and Camille Kampouris spent over a decade trying to make this historical drama about German theologian and Nazi dissident Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and it's hitting theaters on November 22. They were delightful guests and you'll want to hear every word. You can watch the trailer for Bonhoeffer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZM90izJ8sI And don't listen to the media lies about Israel's aggression in Lebanon. Hezbollah has fired 11,000 rockets into Israel since Oct 7. They have forced tens of thousands from their homes. Israel is responding to their aggression. And find out why New York Mayor, Eric Adams is the new Donald Trump. Read all about it on our Substack: https://phelimmcaleer.substack.com/p/eric-adams-is-donald-trump?r=1vp05q And migrant crime is out of control. Tune in as Matt Cole (Debate This!, Avenge This!) takes a seat at the table to chat about Marvel's Runaways, the MCU-adjacent three-season TV show that follows a group of six high schoolers as they learn about a murderous scheme that their seemingly upstanding parents have been committing together for years and proceed to do all they can to thwart it. Having premiered in 2017 on Hulu before ending in 2019, it was promoted as a Marvel Studios property despite never giving nods to Iron Man, Hulk, Infinity Stones, or anything of the sort once (though the Darkhold, which you may recall from WandaVision, does pop up). On top of breaking down this under-the-radar series, the hosts arch their eyebrows at the questionable category of comedy that punches down on activism, comment on the upcoming animated series Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and repeatedly lament how much the show should have lasted one or more seasons. Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl), Runaways stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Annie Wersching, Ryan Sands, Angel Parker, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Kevin Weisman, Brigid Brannagh, James Yaegashi, Brittany Ishibashi, Elizabeth Hurley, Clarissa Thibeaux, Kip Pardue, and Julian McMahon. After having his mind perm-blown by acid in the spring of 65, George's songwriting changed its' trajectory, both in quality (upwards) and in subject matter. Gone were the boy/girl-romance songs, and in came a more thoughtful, world-weary young man, the same almost dour man we met just 2 years earlier holding the pen for "Don't Bother Me." With Rubber Soul's "Think For Yourself," George seems to be delivering a memo of caution regarding the peril of being stuck in traditional ways of living and thinking. It's unclear who he's talking to though. Is it a romantic partner? A platonic relationship (bandmates?)? The British government? Himself? The track is delivered with an absolutely confounding and kind of unsettling chord progression that leaves the listener feeling unrooted. Is it a major key? A minor key? It doesn't seem to fit the rules of pop song craft. It's so far removed from the simple chords of early Beatle songs, let alone early George songs. And it's all propelled by a fuzzed-out lead bass track, possibly the first recorded fuzz bass ever. Joining us this week is the one and only Kyle Gass, half of the greatest rock band in history of the world, Tenacious D. Along with his partner Jack Black, one could make the case that he and Kyle are the modern-day Lennon/McCartney of comedy rock. Their 20+ career has seen the release of 4 studio albums, a film, an HBO series, a multi part series on Youtube (2018's Post-Apocolypto), and Grammy. In his spare time in the last year, he's managed to post daily guitar videos on Instagram, start up the podcast "Did We Do It?" with fellow actor Kevin Weisman, and recorded new solo and Tenacious D music. He's got a new solo single, "Vaccinated," with a star-studded video, out now. You can stream the song, watch the video, and get the t-shirts at https://linktr.ee/kylegass. We chat with KG about all sorts of things, from podcast mic tips to hating social media, the Beatles as actors, the appeal of a creative duo vs a band, to getting the vip treatment at Abbey Road. He even drops a few Easter eggs for upcoming Tenacious D plans (we got the ok from their people to leave it in) that's sure to please old school D fans and Beatles fans alike. Be sure to follow Kyle on Instagram at @theactualkylegass. So what do you think? Too high? Too low? Just right? Kyle things we're laughably crazy. Let us know what you think! As has been well documented on the podcast, u/myfreeday and u/dogboobes don't listen to music. We think it's music anhedonia, but maybe they just need a famous actor to tell them otherwise right? That usually solves the problem, so we attacked it headfirst with our new friend Kevin Weisman of Alias and a bunch of other great things, including the 'Did We Do It?' podcast, which he hosts with Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. So, with Kyle's help, we discuss some of the hot posts on r/letstalkmusic, to try and convince dog and freed that music is indeed enjoyable. It's fall of 2001. You're putting on your Dickies & your Osiris D3 skate shoes, and your spiky studded belt with your LED buckle as you scarf down a Pop Tart before heading to school. You're about to head out the door when you remember to set your VCR to record your new favorite show... ALIAS. On this month's installment of Throwback Thursday, I give you a glimpse into my life as a high school freshman, diving into the first fandom I ever discovered on my own, and I skim the surface of my thoughts surrounding JJ Abrams's iconic show. Who was Milo Rambaldi? What was with #47? And will we EVER get the reunion we deserve? Plus, hear me gush about my love for Jennifer Garner (the namesake of my podcast) & Michael Vartan, and make a desperate plea to the entire cast to talk with me about their favorite sandwiches.
