In 2017, David Leavitt drove to the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Montana to adopt a baby girl. A few years later, during an interview with a documentary filmmaker, Leavitt, a wealthy Utah politician, told a startling story about how he went about getting physical custody of that child. He describes going to the tribe's president and offering to use his connections to broker an international sale of the tribe's buffalo. At the same time, he was asking the president for his blessing to adopt the child. That video eventually leaked to a local TV station, and the adoption became the subject of a federal investigation into bribery. To others, the adoption story seemed to run afoul of a federal law meant to protect Native children from being removed from their tribes' care in favor of non-Native families.  This week on Reveal, reporters Andrew Becker and Bernice Yeung dig into the story of this complicated and controversial adoption, how it circumvented the mission of the Indian Child Welfare Act, and why some of the baby's Native family and tribe were left feeling that a child was taken from them. This episode was produced in collaboration with the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. Organic Wine Podcast

My guests for this episode are the father and son team Doug and Andrew Becker of Montpelier Vineyards in Montpelier, Vermont. Montpelier Vineyards is currently the only certified organic winery north of the Mason-Dixon line that I'm aware of, though there may be more in the process and soon to be certified. As a quick clarification, a certified organic winery must have two certifications: one for the vineyard and one for the winery. There are other certified vineyards in New England, but only Montpelier Vineyards has both vineyard and winery certifications. Doug and Andrew tell us their story, and we get technical about some of the challenges of Vermont viticulture, as well as how to deal with VA and reduction in the winery.  Doug and Andrew may introduce you to some new terminology, because in addition to grape wines they make pyments, cysers, and melomels and discuss the practice of bletting apples. We also discuss the particular hybrid grapes that they're growing, and their pros and cons. They are one of the few growers of a new hybrid grape named Petite Pearl, bred by Tom Plocher, that shows a lot of promise, and in fact they sent me a bottle of their Montpelier Vineyards 2021 wild fermented Petite Pearl that we discuss in the interview, and since this was recorded a few weeks ago I've had a chance to try it. The color is the first remarkable aspect of the wine. Inky, opaque purple, tinged magenta at the rim. Extremely dark. After swirling in the glass the legs ooze down almost as dark as the wine itself. It smelled initially of blue fruit, snowy mountain air, grape jelly, and a bit of cocoa powder. It is extremely fresh, still young, while also rich and full bodied. It achieves that deft feat of having significant weight, even gravitas, without an ounce of heaviness. Only 12 and a half percent alcohol. The closest association I can make to something you might have drunk is along the lines of the black wines of Cahors, or something like a varietal Tannat or Teroldego. After a couple days open in the refrigerator it developed more chocolately notes and creamier texture, so while this was a delight to drink now, I think it will age very well and improve for quite a while. I have never done a tasting note like this before, so I hope that speaks for itself. I loved drinking this wine, and I think it shows that the future of wine made from hybrid grapes is extremely bright (and that's not a climate change joke).  So get some if you can. So let's take a trip to Vermont, where it seems like wine – in a beautiful diversity of innumerable flavors and forms – is really blowing up. https://www.montpeliervineyards.com/ Sponsor: https://www.centralaswine.com/

Today I'm joined by one of my 10K Mastermind students, Keith Errington. Keith is 24-years-old, and he's already earning $45,000 a month! How did Keith do it? What's his background? How did he get interested in online fitness training? Keith was introduced to working out years ago when a friend of his named Ryan was going to the gym to get in shape for high school football. Ryan was always known as the kid with “the arms.”  Keith wanted to get in that kind of shape, so he asked Ryan if he could start going to the gym with him. Ryan took Keith under his wing and helped train him for around 8 months. As he started working out more and more, Keith sought out those who were at that “next level” to teach him more. He even found a work-out partner named Andrew Becker, who ended up becoming an offensive lineman in the CFL.    Keith maintained a consistent work-out schedule and played football throughout high school. He particularly loved the team/family dynamic that football offered. After graduating high school Keith continued working out. But he found himself missing that family atmosphere he had enjoyed being on the football team. Keith then found out that his good friend Brandon was doing fitness competitions.  (Listen to episode #514 and learn how Keith got to $45,000!) I've Been There. I've Done That. Now Learn with Me. I know all the ins and outs of online fitness coaching. I've made mistakes and I've had successes. But I've never given up. That's how I was able to open my own gym and start an online coaching business that has not only brought me success, but also benefited over 600 other online fitness coaches. I love to share my knowledge. So, when you work with me, you learn with me. I'm ready to help you shed those 9-5 shackles and enjoy the freedom, satisfaction, and yes, money, you'll get from being an online fitness coach. The federal government is indeed the largest landowner in the region, but most of the land itself is privately owned. And lots of those owners are against building a border wall. What's Goin' Down In Downtown J-Town came to be due to a massive gathering of like minded individuals. It seemed like it was hard to find good music, food, beer, and art from the normal sources. Suddenly something new had grown in our own towns from people we've known for years. Chicago Street Pub turned into the central place for alot of us to gather. We want to tell all of YOU about it because it needs to survive to bring about a real change to our daily lives. It's time to get back to putting passion into the things we do. It's time to shed light on the folks that do that day after day hoping someone will notice, and to give our business to the people building things to last. Well, no one will know if no one talks about it.   Take a listen to us interview our local musicians from Third City Sound in Downtown Joliet above the hub, Chicago Street Pub. We record a song, an interview, and a song in one take to keep the "live" feel. We want to capture a genuine moment we these genuine people.   In Episode 9, David Francis and I interview two very interesting individuals, Stephen and Andrew Becker. These two are in Joliet bands Modern Planets and The Selectones together. They also have some original songs together as a duo. We get to hear a couple of those songs in this episode. We also, of course, get into how they started playing music together. We had a great time recording this one. The Beckers are very entertaining. I'm sure you'll think so, too.Your Hosts,David Francis and Tom Maslowskihttps://www.facebook.com/thirdcitysound/https://www.facebook.com/modernplanetsband/?ref=br_rshttps://www.facebook.com/selectonesmusic/https://www.facebook.com/wreckerbrothersmusic/https://www.facebook.com/Chicago-Street-Pub-Music-Food-Beer-205506299468892/

Take an extraordinary journey through the criminal underworld of the Mexican drug cartels and the dark heart of the US-Mexican drug wars. Los Zetas, the infamous Mexican drug cartel, has taken gang brutality to unprecedented levels. United States and Mexican law enforcement agencies accuse Los Zetas of hundreds of deaths and laundering millions of dollars. As blood has spilled on both sides of the US-Mexican border, the cartels have increasingly turned to children as their foot soldiers - for trafficking, kidnapping, and even murder. Journalist Dan Slater has spent years researching this phenomena as it has played out in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and just across the border in its sister city, Laredo, Texas - border towns that are a prime battleground for control of lucrative US drug smuggling routes. Sharing insights from his book, "Wolf Boys", Slater will respond to the questions: Who are the casualties when cartels go to war? Why did the cartels begin this sinister recruitment of children, and how did two American teens get caught up in the violence? What can be done to break this vicious cycle? Speaker Dan Slater is author of Wolf Boys. The discussion is moderated by Andrew Becker, Reporter, The Center for Investigative Reporting. And on the lighter side they introduce us to one of the coolest dogs you'll ever meet. Then filmmakers Daniel Mehr and Andrew Becker stop by to tell us about "Santoalla," a documentary about a real-life murder mystery in Spain. Last, but certainly not least, legendary Hollywood actor Robert Davi tells us about "Davi's Way" which documents his quest to honor his friend and hero Frank Sinatra. It's a cool and glamorous time!

The internet, GPS, voice recognition programs like Siri – many of the technologies that we use today were developed with national security in mind. These inventions and many others began as projects of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Defense Department’s secretive military research agency. For more than fifty years, DARPA has held to a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. The genesis of that mission and of DARPA itself dates to the Cold War and the launch of Sputnik in 1957, and a commitment by the United States that it would be the initiator and not the victim of strategic technological surprises. Working with innovators inside and outside of government, DARPA has repeatedly delivered on that mission, transforming revolutionary concepts and even seeming impossibilities into practical capabilities. The ultimate results have included not only game-changing military capabilities such as precision weapons and stealth technology, but also major innovations in modern civilian society. How do they do it? What makes this military organization such fertile ground for invention? What technologies with useful daily applications have failed to enter into civilian use? Can Silicon Valley learn from DARPA, or vice versa? Drawing on extensive interviews, declassified memos and inside sources, investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen will share insights into this top-secret organization. Speaker Annie Jacobsen is an Investigative Journalist and Author. The conversation is moderated by Andrew Becker, Reporter, The Center for Investigative Reporting. Drones have become a regular, if controversial, part of US military operations. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, in Libya and against ISIS, these unmanned crafts are frequently put to use against specific targets, while keeping US soldiers out of the line of fire. However, the strikes that hit the headlines are only one part of the story. According to investigative journalist Chris Woods, a secret war has been underway for years, with drones in the air over Somalia, Pakistan, Yemen and others, searching for militant and terrorist targets. How have armed drones changed the face of modern warfare? What are the implications for US foreign policy decisions? And how does the drone program affect America’s reputation abroad?Speaker Chris Woods is an investigative journalist.
