Your support means the world to us and it keeps us motivated to continue creating content that makes a positive impact on your work life. In today's podcast episode, host Aoife O'Brien dives into the fascinating topic of autonomy at work. Autonomy refers to the sense of choice and control we have over what we do and how we do it. It's amazing how the sudden shift to remote work during the pandemic gave many of us a greater sense of autonomy – the ability to control our own time and work in a way that suits us best. But is more autonomy always better? Aoife challenges this assumption and offers insights on finding the right balance. Too much autonomy without guidance can leave us feeling lost and directionless, while too little autonomy under the watchful eye of a micromanager can be demoralising and demotivating. Key points covered in this episode: - Our psychological needs at work - Dealing with a micromanager - Setting clear expectations - Finding the balance of autonomy She also highlights the three core psychological needs we all have at work: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy fosters job satisfaction, engagement, and trust within the organisation – ultimately leading to better business results. However, it's essential to adapt our need for autonomy as our careers progress and our roles change. If you've ever dealt with a micromanager, Aoife offers practical advice on addressing the issue by managing upwards. Communication is key, and expressing your preferences for greater independence can lead to a more balanced relationship. Remember, it's important to understand the needs and expectations of both yourself and your manager. Finding proactive ways to contribute and offer information in advance can help alleviate some of the micromanagement tendencies. Ultimately, we all deserve to work in an environment that nurtures autonomy while providing the necessary guidance and support to thrive. So, let's embrace autonomy at work, strive for competence, foster relatedness, and find the perfect balance that leads to greater happiness in our professional lives. Are you at a career crossroads and wondering how to make the right choice? In this enlightening podcast episode, Aoife O'Brien dives into the world of career anchors and choices with Peter Schein, co-author of "Career Anchors: The Changing Nature of Careers." Peter explains how career anchors help individuals understand their unique values and preferences, guiding them towards fulfilling and successful career paths. From technical functional roles to autonomy, creativity, general management, and more, the conversation explores the different career anchors and how they influence our decisions. Discover the power of self-awareness in career planning and decision-making, and gain insights into finding a balance between personal and professional goals. The main points throughout this podcast include: - Understanding the concept of career anchors and their role in making career decisions. - Exploring the eight different career anchors, including technical functional, autonomy, challenge, entrepreneurship, general management, service, stability, and lifestyle. - Recognising the importance of aligning your career choices with your personal values and aspirations. - How the pandemic has reshaped the way we perceive and approach our careers. - The significance of self-awareness in navigating career transitions and building a fulfilling professional journey. “The next one, it was actually one of the newer anchors called to challenge and risk is how we label it, but it's basically, you don't ever want to be too comfortable doing something that's simple. You always have to be finding something that is boil the ocean hard or you, you're sort of a risk junkie. A friend many, many years ago was a capital market, financial instrument trader and was given the opportunity to, become a manager in that same, department. No, it was the challenge of your life on the line with every trade you make. That is what motivated him. He didn't wanna manage other people doing that. In 2023, the world embraced that idea, but when this research started at the Sloan Business School at MIT, Ed and other people working on it knew that those people were all going to say, I want to be the boss, I want to be the general manager. I'm at business school because I want to be a CEO. But I think we've moved past that. And they discovered in the research that if nine out of 10 of their panellists said that, by the time they got 20 years later, less than half of them were actually still saying they wanted to be the CEO.” Listen back: https://happieratwork.ie/happier-at-work-68-embracing-the-gentle-art-of-humble-inquiry-with-edgar-and-peter-schein/ Connect with Peter Schein: Website: https://ocli.org/ Do you have any feedback or thoughts on this discussion? So not achieving sales figures or manufacturing figures. And the third one is the cost involved in training employees that then move on a couple of months later to a new job. If these are the three biggest costs and the three biggest reasons for those costs are mental health. Yeah. And yet the lowest spend and budgets from companies are around mental health. In this thought-provoking podcast episode, host Aoife O'Brien engages in an inspiring conversation with Donna O'Connor, an Event & Communications Specialist working to create transformative conversations for business leaders across workplace wellbeing, mental health, culture change and inclusive leadership. Together, they explore the crucial components of building a happier and more inclusive work environment by championing diversity and fostering meaningful connections. Donna shares valuable insights on driving positive change, breaking down barriers, and promoting equity at the workplace. They discuss the significance of understanding intentions and behaviours to bridge gaps in communication and create a culture of empathy. Delve into the world of inclusion and discover how innovative approaches can shape a work culture where each individual thrives, regardless of background or identity. The main points throughout this podcast include: - Emphasising the role of intention and behaviour in creating genuine connections among team members. - Understanding the challenges faced in achieving equal and equitable opportunities for all employees. - Rethinking traditional practices and design to eliminate exclusion and prioritise inclusion. - The importance of diverse perspectives at leadership levels for inclusive decision-making. - Promoting a work culture that celebrates the unique qualities of each individual and values their contributions. " Inclusion is hard. Inclusion involves hearing something you don't really want to hear. And if it's somebody's lived experience that they would prefer, if you didn't use that word, you can't say, I'm sorry, you're wrong about that. Excuse me. Actually sometimes having somebody point out something to you that you say, well, that's not my intention, but that doesn't actually cover the topic entirely. Maybe you need to have a conversation and maybe you need to change your vocabulary, or maybe you just need to be a bit more aware. The assumption is this is easy, that it's something lovely and it's inclusive. We all want to do it so it's going to be very straightforward. But actually areas of it are going to be challenging because there are things that you're going to be asked to do or stop doing that you don't see as being offensive." They also prioritise regular feedback and collaboration, organising town halls and breakout sessions to facilitate connection and vulnerability among employees. Additionally, RGP places a strong focus on diversity and inclusion, establishing a dedicated DE&I council and partnering with clients on relevant initiatives. By listening to employees, valuing their input, and prioritising their well-being, organisations can create a positive and inclusive work environment in the era of hybrid work. Further points throughout include: - People-centric organisation with an emphasis on listening and feedback - Trust-building and open communication - Challenges in project assignments and course correction - Successful implementation of a hybrid working model - Effective onboarding strategies for remote and hybrid environments - Focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives - Creating informal channels for employee connection and support - Incorporating employee sentiment in decision-making - Commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement in DE&I efforts. “Last year, we conducted a global total reward survey. Tell us what's important to you and what's meaningful. And we were really clear up front and said, look, there's going to be 3 inputs to forming our evolving total rewards. One is going to be competitive benchmarking data. We are going to look externally at what our peers and the places we compete for talent are doing so that we understand that. The 2nd understandably is going to be affordability because we are a for-profit business that's trying to grow. But the third equally important input is going to be employee sentiment. What's important to you?” Do you have any feedback or thoughts on this discussion? If so, please connect with Aoife via the links below and let her know. Aoife would love to hear from you! Are you hesitant to showcase your accomplishments? Join the conversation as we delve into the intricate world of self-promotion, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by women. Furthermore, Aoife and Nicola offer practical strategies to empower women to overcome these obstacles and thrive professionally. They emphasise the importance of leveraging platforms like LinkedIn to amplify one's voice and build a strong personal brand. By embracing self-promotion and owning their successes, women can break through the glass ceiling and pave the way for gender equality in the workplace. This discussion serves as a call to action, urging individuals to recognize the significance of self-promotion not only for personal growth but also for achieving a more inclusive and equitable society. Together, we can challenge the existing narratives and create a supportive environment where women feel empowered to celebrate their accomplishments and contribute to their fullest potential. Further points throughout include: - Self-promotion creates opportunities and connections. - Self-promotion is confidently expressing your unique perspective. - Own your achievements and let your authentic self shine. - Self-promotion celebrates your journey and invites others to join. - Recognize and embrace your worth without self-effacement. - Overcome fear and share your unique gifts with the world. - Self-promotion empowers you to make a positive impact. - Embrace self-promotion as an act of self-love and inspiration. “I think self-compassion is quite a loaded word in terms of females … because we have been traditionally taught to put other people first, and then if we put ourselves first, put our own needs first. It's kinda seen as selfish or we feel that it's selfish. And so then when it comes to self-compassion, it doesn't sit quite naturally with us and it's really about changing your perspective around that insofar as if you want to have a self-compassionate nature to others, you must. Have it to you first. It's not selfish. It's not about complacency either. In fact, it's actually coming from a place where you're acknowledging that things are okay. You don't always have to be the best at everything.” THE LISTENERS SAY: Do you have any feedback or thoughts on this discussion? If so, please connect with Aoife via the links below and let her know.
