We talked about the return of pop punk when The Ergs! first formed, The Fest and how it's the best show anyone will play the entire year, the “final” show at the Asbury Lanes in 2008, the band originally breaking up but since teaming up again and building momentum (New songs + and more shows), playing a handful of West Coast shows last year, carrying the hometown of Old Bridge with them, putting out two new EPs last year, working with Steve Albini for a solo record, and how his solo self titled record could had been a The Ergs! record.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cranston Dean is my guest for this episode. Cranston is a New Jersey native whose music draws from Americana, folk, jazz, country, blues, pop, and soul. He sees songwriting and performing as a way to translate and transform the human condition into beautiful works of art. Cranston's solo tours have taken him throughout the Mid-Atlantic to Nashville and north through New England to the coast of Maine.  In the summer of 2017, he supported his fourth studio album, "High Beams," with a tour spanning Chicago, Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, California, and Colorado. The album was named one of New Jersey music's 17 best albums of 2017 by New Jersey Advance Media (NJ.com)  Educated at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia as a jazz pianist, Cranston is the 2017 & 2016 Asbury Park Music Award winner as Top Male Acoustic Act, and the winner of the 2015 Asbury Park Music Award as Top Multi-Instrumentalist, so yeah, he's pretty talented. Cranston has an album release show at Asbury Lanes on May 28th (Northern Town), which dropped on his birthday this past May 11th. Cranston and I talk about the small-town life and jazz influences in his music, the recording of "Northern Town," how he got his start in songwriting, the value of open mic performance, recording studio lessons that helped him record from home. The New Jersey musician strolled into the APV Studio the other day for our podcast recording and it felt as if I had had a visit from a longtime friend. We chatted about his childhood, his varied musical talents, the bands he regularly plays in, and the people who make up his inner circle.  In fact, friendships and family are what sustain Cranston on a daily basis, and in all of his musical endeavors. Cranston's most recent creation is his 6th studio album, Northern Town, which will be released on May 11th. Recorded in analog in his parent's home alongside his very best friends … this album is filled with creativity, love, personal stories and many special moments. And that voice!  There isn't enough one can say about the richness and texture of Cranston's vocals. To understand exactly what I mean, listen to his first released single from the album - “The Root.” Tune in and enjoy this wonderful conversation about what went into making Northern Town and mark your calendar for the album release show at Asbury Lanes on May 28.

Quite possibly the nicest guys I've ever met … the dudes from the NJ band Wake Up Paradise stopped by the APV Studio recently for a podcast and acoustic session. Tim Montalvo (vocals), Roger Wuy (drums), Sal Brisindi (guitar), Dann Aquino (guitar) and Max Orozco (bass) spent the better part of an hour chatting about their influences, process for creating their music, being a DIY musician as well as being parents to their children and pets! This alt-rock band has been creating catchy, “knock it out of the ballpark” singles since 2013 but are currently picking up speed and ready to release a bopper of a single, “Ready Now," of which we got to hear during their performance!  Although the guys admitted this was their first acoustic session, they crafted beautifully mellow renditions of “Satellites” and “Ready Now,” … so good in fact, that those versions deserve to be separate recordings that stand on their own!Today when you're in your car, I encourage you to queue up the Asbury Park Vibes Podcast with Wake Up Paradise, and have some great laughs as you  become familiar with this jewel of a band who will be playing Asbury Lanes on August 12th!Watch and listen to their amazing acoustic session on The APV Podcast's YouTube page![Opening podcast music by Supermutt]

We have some New Jersey love for this one! Jared Hart of Mercy Union and formerly of The Scandals joins the pod in episode No. 116. There are some incredible stories about Hart growing up in the punk scene of NJ. Hart has been hooked on punk since hearing Rancid in the school yard at a young age. It continued throughout his time going to the Asbury Lanes and some of New Jersey's punk venues. Music eventually opened up his world. He was finally able to see the world being in a band, something Hart never thought he would be able to do. He also made valuable friendships which he still holds close to him to this day. Jersey is often considered a "B market" when people plan tours with New York and Philly surrounding the state, but a bunch of the great bands are here (for example Bouncing Souls, Gaslight Anthem, and The Front Bottoms). Hart talks about bands around him growing up and how they paved the way for his ability to tour and continue to write songs. Some awesome bands mentioned in this episode and Jared has incredible stories from when he was breaking into the scene. In the words of Hart: "Everyone knows a band is from Jersey, no one is hiding it." We also go into some deep subjects like watching his best friends leave bands and music as whole, and trying to keep the passion for writing through all of that. Hart says music is the only thing he is comfortable doing and the only thing he ever wanted to do. We also hear about Scandals stories, a band that accomplished so much, and never truly had a formal ending - but Hart says he was burnt out from playing the songs (leaves the door open for a show sometime down the road). We close out this episode talking about his current project, Mercy Union, and what they are currently working on. The three members really took a leap of faith, quitting school to pursue their dreams of being the next big thing. After the High/Low intro, Lexi reveals some of her history of panic and anxiety and how they affect her dating life in “I Did Something Weird Last Night” (to be clear, none of these things are what makes the story weird) (10:56). If you’re struggling or having thoughts of suicide, PLEASE reach out to one of the many resources available, including 1-800-273-TALK . After that, Jay reveals that he and his girlfriend began couples therapy. They talk about why this is a good thing, and Anthony reveals that he’s got some experience of his own in it (24:10). They then share some tips from the always relevant Gottman Institute about working through hard things with your partner (36:38). Shifting gears, they talk about Valentine’s Day (46:26) and give some gift suggestions (55:56). Join me, Sweet T. and our friends James Brown and Jennifer Burton as we bicycle over from Ocean Grove to Asbury Park for a rendezvous with fireworks, Dave Abramson and Glen Jones. You'll hear horns blowing, heavy breathing, Methodists, crowds galore, fire alarms, fireworks and more on this very special "from the scene" Aerial View, recorded July 4, 2015.Asbury Park holds a special place in my heart. I've been going since those great Glen Jones/X-Ray Burns (RIP) remotes at the old Howard Johnson's. Asbury is also dear because it's where I met Sweet T. during the 2005 Weird NJ Halloween Party at The Stone Pony. It turned out we lived five blocks away from each other in Hoboken. When we got married in 2005 we held our reception at the late, lamented Asbury Lanes (not the new shadow-of-its-former self venue).Tonight, it's 4th of July, Asbury Par! Patrick Fasano has over forty years of real estate development experience. It all started in 1974 while he was working at his first restaurant job in New Brunswick. With the savings he earned, Patrick began buying boarded up houses and renovating them. He even rented these single and multi-family homes to the staff that worked alongside him in the restaurant. The owners of the restaurant eventually invested in Mr. Fasano to begin his first business, Reliable Properties. What followed were many successful development projects across the US. Fast forward to 1998 when Pat acquired his first building in Asbury Park on Bangs Avenue. The first floor of this building he donated to the gay & lesbian community, and the 2nd floor was converted into apartments to provide housing for his contracting employees as they began rehabbing more buildings throughout the beachfront city. Over the past 15+ years Mr. Fasano has focused on developments in Asbury Park. In the past decade he built over two hundred condominium units for sale with a market value of over $50 million. Additionally he built a number of commercial spaces and restaurants such as Brando’s, The Asbury Lanes, The Wonder Bar, Plaza Tapatia, The Bond Street Complex, and Passion as well as 12 storefronts on Cookman & Mattison Avenue. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Pat for a live podcast and walking tour of his latest passion location, Atlantic City. Pat literally shouted his love for this City from the streets as we toured his development on the New York Avenue portion of the Orange Loop, home to Bourre, a New Orleans style restaurant, the home of a shipping container style hotel with 40 rooms, and a CBD dispensary along with 12 apartment units that were currently under construction. Pat has a contagious passion for his projects, which is evident in this quick interview. Perhaps most interesting in this episode is Pat's response to the question about the approval process in Atlantic City with respect to his extensive plan on New York Ave. Be on the look out for Part 2 as we look to sit down with Pat in the studio for a more extensive conversation soon!

"Juicy" Jenn Hampton is an arts and music curator part owner and co-director and curator of Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park, NJ and curator of the Wooden Walls Project. Jenn spent many years pursing acting, art and documentary film production after college. Her acting pursuits lead her to Asbury Park where she helped create and build the legendary Asbury Lanes. In the eleven years at Asbury Lanes, Jenn helped to create a national and international fan base of performers, bands and burlesque acts, in addition to creating an innovative gallery program that focused on young art collectors. The success of Asbury Lanes helped to create a destination in Asbury Park for music lovers, artists, and performers from all over the country. Parlor Gallery opened in 2009 with a unique vision in New Jersey’s art community that features innovative work by some of the best emerging and established artists. Parlor curates exhibits the public may not ordinarily have access to outside of a large urban environment within a welcoming, creative, and inspirational space. Jenn is also the curator of the Wooden Walls Project, a public arts program that showcases murals and public art on the Asbury Park Boardwalk that has brought international recognition to Asbury Park and the participating artists while providing a backdrop to likely millions of Instagram photos. Porkchop is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He has a MFA in Sculpture from VCU and has had a successful career designing and creating murals, mixed media art, and sculpture. He creates intriguing scenarios by combining paint, illustration, and text. He has exhibited exclusively in the United States and Europe with Russia on the horizon and is published in “The Greatest Erotic Art of Today/Volume 2”, “Eye Candy” and “I Want Your Skull." Denizens and visitors to Monmouth County have been enjoying Porkchop’s vibrant and colorful artwork and murals for years, but in its most recent manifestation, the artist strips his works of his normally vivid palette and instead employs intentionally ritualistic and graphic monochromatic designs and symbols accented with Gold. Influenced by ancient block printing techniques, history and literature, Porkchop sources out, manipulates, and casts familiar objects. He then painstakingly recreates their surfaces giving them a new existence into a dark and curious storyline. The application of paint into his intentional ritualistic designs followed by flawless coats of glossy resin is an act of pure precision and care, like the work of a surgeon or mortician. There are often unexpected but pleasant marriages of imagery and object. By stripping these pieces of his usual vibrant palette, Porkchop’s choice of black & white emphasizes the narrative in the works, which becomes difficult to ignore. Presenting these pieces in symmetry creates an alter that pulls the stories altogether. This is a great chat with two visionaries leaving their lasting imprint on Asbury Park and the world! The working title for this weeks show is Games, Dames & Diddy Wah Diddies but I've got a short attention span and usually stray way off the path so why should this be any different? Blind Blake recorded "Diddie Wah Diddie" around 1928 I'd 'recon....it's a masterful ragtime guitar tune where not too many answers for just what the fuck it is....intercourse, sex, penis are all candidates claiming the prize....but whether any of them get the gold is in the ears of the listener.....Starting off the Podcast with some upgrade 45's to the DRR Show...first is Roky Erickson & Arthur Lee's bastard child...Nova Local with their first slab of 7" wax "Games"..so at least we start the show off staying on course....focus, Mickster, focus......Don Gardner's ultra hip floor filler "My baby likes to boogaloo" hits the turntable running followed by an original first pressing of The Shondells' "Thunderbolt" on Snap. Thunderbolt is the b-side of the original recording of Tommy James & the Shondells frat hit "Hanky Panky" that was waxed in 1964 and just credited to The Shondells...by the time the song became a huge hit the band had broken up and James assembled a new lineup to go out on tour...you can read all about it in the terrific book by TJ tittled: Me, the Mob and the Music..Fabienne Delsol closes out the first set singin' to her mystery man "Mr. Mystery".The second set of music features soundbites by Samuel L. Jackson. SLJ is one of my favorite actors and if not only for Pulp Fiction should have glommed an Oscar...he was fantastic! And speaking of fantastic Captain Beefheart opens up the awards show with his first 45 rpm "Diddy Wah Diddy" on A&M records produced by David Gates of Bread fame....yikes! Samuel L follows up with some witty repartee before the Boonerasss!! from Germany give Dave Davies' "One Fine Day" a ride....SLJ with the immortal "Shup Up" soundbite before one of my favs Cub Koda offa his CUB DIGS BO hooky lau with "Mumblin' Guitar"...yeowza!! SLJ brings us back to earth with "Ezekiel" and the Golden Gate Quartet take the bait with a fire & brimstone 78 rpm "Jezebel" from 1941 on the Okeh record label. .... now sit down while your reading this....Rush opens the card at the podium and declares the Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things" as the winner...it's off of their really great 8 song EP that only came out on vinyl called FEEDBACK.....We still got some way to go, brothers & sisters, so don't leave the room because Georgio Morodor serves up a pretty cool synthesizer-less song off his LP from 1972 simply called "Son of My Father". It's from waaaayyyyy back when Morodor was just calling himself Georgio which for my money is the best crap he's ever done! In the words of Al Gore....."debate over, debate over...." Hey...speaking of Al Gore....do you think Tipper got tired of hearing how Bush stole the election from him or do you think that she got tired of listening to AG talking about Global Warming OR do you think she was doing the Diddy Wah Diddy with one of the farm hands on their palatial estate down thar in 'V'ginny? Gore's electric bill tipped $20,000 smackeroos per month...now THAT'S a carbon footprint. But on to less boring things than Al & Tipper....one more thing....how ahead of her time was The Tip on the Parential Advisory Warnings? 'eh?Link Wray doesn't give a flying diddy wah diddy so he keeps his mouth shut and plays his guitar like Tipper's nemesis Frank Zappa...a short moment of silence for FZ......ok.....now Link deserves a R.I.P. shoutout but my ears are still ringing from when I saw him at Asbury Lanes a couple of years ago....holy shit .....I didn't have to clean the wax out for a friggin year!! focus....focus....Link blows away the competion with "The Wild One" off of ACE Records 2007 release THE PATHWAY SESSIONS...a must have for all you headbanging metal morons....let Link show ya how it's done.Switiching gears The West Coast Pop Art & Experimental Band read "A Childs Guide To Good & Evil" .....somehow it m
