This episode includes selections from Ella Jenkins (pictured), Angelic Gospel Singers & Dixie Hummingbirds, Friendly Gospel Singers of Chicago, New Jersey Mass Choir, Golden Gate Quartet, Kelly Brothers, Metropolitan Male Ensemble, and others.
Anthony Butler and His Singers recreate the classic sound of the beloved Golden Gate Quartet with their song, “Judgement's Coming.”

This episode begins with a TCBCast-mini-style intro with Gurdip and Justin discussing the passing of singer-songwriter Mark James and the news of Sony's "Memphis" box set, out August 9, 2024. Then, Gurdip taps out and Bec taps in for a fun exploration of some of our favorite deep cut Elvis concert rarities - the songs he almost never pulled out, from ones done only once (like Oh Happy Day or Rubberneckin') to those done at best for maybe a handful of shows (Memphis Tennessee, anybody?) For Song of the Week, Bec ponders "(Such An) Easy Question" which Elvis recorded in 1962 but that was also reused in the 1965 movie "Tickle Me." Then Justin closes us out with a quick exploration of "I Will Be Home Again," the Golden Gate Quartet homage that Elvis and Charlie Hodge harmonized on for "Elvis is Back" in 1960. For those who haven't seen it yet elsewhere, Sony released a behind the scenes mini-doc about the new "Memphis" set on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8XGKNVko-g Our live rarities playlist (on YouTube, since other streaming services don't have FTDs or bootlegs!): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLg-DEia9bCgaA-7wTppzt2tTFXJkHaXGA Interview with Orlandus Wilson of the Golden Gate Quartet sourced from: http://tofuhut.blogspot.com/2009/02/glisten-work-of-father-3-more-info-on.html and its archived version on the Internet Archive. One of the most irresistible songs in all of gospel music is the Golden Gate Quartet's a cappella rendition of the story of Daniel in the lion's den – “Shadrack.”

The Golden Gate Quartet is an African-American vocal group, that was founded in 1934 by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. Willie Johnson, William Langford, Henry Owens, and Orlandus Wilson started singing gospel and folks songs in churches and then at radio stations. In 1937 the foursome signed their first recording contract. They performed at Carnegie Hall, and nite clubs in New York City causing their popularity to grow. In 1940 they had a nationally syndicated radio show. In 1941, the Golden Gate Quartet became the first black musical group to sing at Constitution Hall, and performed several times at the White House. The Quartet was inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. You're going to here 5 episodes from their national radio show which aired in 1940 and 1941. More info at http://krobcollection.com

From the cold grey light of dawn to some gospel coverage from Luther Dickinson, George Jones and The Golden Gate Quartet, Deeper Roots this week takes another pull at the thread of tapestry of the past century, once again celebrating America's music. We're in fine form, no doubt, because the players this week move from the ‘king of boogie', John Lee Hooker, to one of the great contemporary songwriters, Iris DeMent. We'll share a track from her latest album, one that ventures into the dark corners of this country's recent history with her brilliant eight minute soliloquy “Goin' Down To Sing In Texas”. We'll share songs about liars, feeling good, 99 year blues, and that last train to Memphis. Join Dave Stroud for two hours from America's songbooks, from church to steeple to songs about its people. We'll be coming to you live from the Cherry Street Historic District of Santa Rosa, California.
Recently I heard a very dark and serious song about the judgment of God and His wrath against sinners. It was the folk song “Great God Almighty's Gonna Cut You Down” (accessed here). I was not aware of the song before; apparently it is an American folk song. The oracular Wikipedia informs me that it was first recorded by the Golden Gate Quartet in 1946 and issued in 1947 by the Jubalairies, and since then has been covered by a variety of singers in country, folk, electronic, and black metal genres, including such singers as Johnny Cash, Tom Jones, and Elvis Presley. It takes some imagination to contemplate someone singing both about blue suede shoes and the wrath of God, but that's America for you.

When Merle Travis recorded his beloved (and never-out-of-print) Folk Songs from the Hills album in 1947, he included a version of “I Am a Pilgrim” that would inspire decades of loving imitations by artists such as Bill Monroe and Doc Watson, Johnny Cash and The Byrds. Some people figured Travis must have written the song himself — after all, the same album included two of his best-known originals, “Dark as a Dungeon” and “Sixteen Ton” — but actually “I Am a Pilgrim” is a traditional gospel tune that has deep roots among white and African-American musicians alike. From Camp Meetings … and, well, from jail …In an introduction on his recording 75 years ago, Travis can be heard saying, “When I first got big enough to start running around by myself at night, the first place I wanted to go was to the camp meetings and to the brush arbor meetings and hear them sing the good old songs. I learned a lot of the old songs, but there was one specially that I liked better than all the rest, and I remember it today just as well as I did the day I learned it.”Nice story. Actually, though, Kentucky-born Travis had a mentor: legendary fingerpicking stylist Mose Rager of Muhlenberg County. Legend has it that Mose's brother Lyman learned "I Am a Pilgrim" while in jail in Russellville, Ky, when he heard it being sung by a black prisoner in a nearby cell. Another version of the yarn places the jailhouse in Elkton, Ky. Wherever lockup actually was, Lyman was said to have later taught the song to his brother, Mose, who in turn taught it to their young neighbor, Merle Travis.Mose Rager RemembersIn a early 1960s film, Mose Rager is heard telling folklorist D.K. Wilgus about the tune's origin. “We sang that old song around here years ago,” he said. “It's just an old brush arbor song. Everybody sang it; Merle Travis and my two brothers, we'd all get together out here … out to the edge of town and just sit out there till about 12 o'clock and sing old hymns.”We don't know the name of the black singer whom Lyman Rager heard in that Kentucky jail, but as Asheville, NC, musician/author Wayne Erbsen has noted, “I Am A Pilgrim” was recorded “by 14 African-American groups before it was even a gleam in Merle Travis' eyes." Pre-Merle RenditionsThe first of those groups was the Norfolk Jubilee Quartette, which recorded the song in 1924 for Paramount Records. The Tidewater Virginia group released dozens of records between 1921 and 1940 — much of it gospel, but also blues and jazz numbers — and in their hands, “I Am a Pilgrim” has a bit of the kick that would come down to Travis two decades later.Among other little known groups to record it were The Good Will Male Chorus (1927), South Carolina Quartette (1928), Mound City Jubilee Quartette (1935), Heavenly Gospel Singers (1936), Golden Gate Quartet (1939) and Southern Wonder Quartet (1940).Bluegrass AttachmentsOf course, the song also has strong bluegrass attachments. Carl Story, considered the father of bluegrass gospel sound starting in the 1940s, said he knew the song from the repertoire of Georgia country music pioneer Riley Puckett.Story learned it as a little boy when his father took him to hear Puckett play in Lenoir, NC. Puckett's recordings were to inspire everyone from Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs on. Many bluegrass lovers also came to know the tune as strictly an instrumental, because of guitarist Clarence White's picking on the Kentucky Colonels' iconic 1964 album, Appalachian Swing!A Possible Origin StoryBut how did the song come about in the first place? A good question, that. Our research has turned up no definitive author, but it does find this to be an excellent example of how folk songs evolve.A connection to classic Christian hymn writing seems obvious, because the lyrics cite some rather esoteric New Testament verses. The title, for instance, seems to refer to The Epistle to the Hebrews (11:13), which reads in part, “…and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.” Also, one verse says, "If I could just touch the hem of his garment" which appears to allude to a story in the Book of Matthew (9:20) in which a woman is healed after touching Jesus' robe. All this might mean we should look for an origin in an 1841 composition by South Carolina poet Mary Dana Shindler, whose hymn “I Am a Pilgrim and I Am a Stranger” contained such Bible references. A rendering of that song actually was one of the first records ever released, specifically a 1917 disc pressed on Victor by The Imperial Quartet. However, the melody there is absolutely nothing like what's come down to us from Merle Travis. In other words, it is highly unlikely that any of those 14 African-American groups recording “I Am a Pilgrim” between 1924 and 1947 were listening to that thing. A better theory is that concurrent with white churchified rendering were more soulful African-American versions. We do know that in 1925 — just one year after the Norfolk Quartette's Paramount recording — the song showed up in a book called, The Negro and His Songs: A Study of Typical Negro Songs in the South by Howard W. Odum and Guy B. Johnson. In addition, folklorists John and Ruby Lomax also collected a version of it during their 1939 Southern states recording trip. Our Take on the TuneFor The Flood, it all began a few weeks ago when Charlie took his first stumbling steps — slipping and a-sliding, as it were — in learning some bottleneck technique on his new resonator guitar. Right away, what came out reminded him of the old gospel tune from his youth — he even recalled Grandma Robertson humming it while she washed dishes — but he just couldn't seem to get the song down. Then Danny came along, took one listen and started just naturally channeling an old Doc-Watson-cum-Chet-Atkins vibe, laying down an absolutely rock solid foundation. Sam grabbed his “E” harp and found his groove, Randy jumped in with some beautiful harmony for the choruses, and suddenly “I Am a Pilgrim” landed righteously in the repertoire.
Song: God Told NicodemusSong by: The Golden Gate QuartetPodcast vocals (intro): Gail NoblesHi! I'm Gail Nobles and you're listening to The Gospel Greats. Today's topic: The Golden Gate Quartet. The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is a vocal gospel group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active. The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the group's website, the original members were Willie Johnson (baritone 1980), William Langford (tenor; d. 1970), Henry Owens (second tenor 1970) and Orlandus Wilson (bass; 1917–1998); other sources state that Langford and Wilson replaced earlier members Robert "Peg" Ford and A.C. "Eddie" Griffin in 1935.From 1935, the group sang in churches and on local radio, gaining a regular spot on radio station WIS in Columbia, South Carolina in 1936.[ They began as a traditional jubilee quartet, combining the clever arrangements associated with barbershop quartets with rhythms borrowed from the blues and jazz like scat singing. They developed a broad repertoire of styles – from Owens' mournful, understated approach in songs such as "Anyhow" or "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name", to the group's highly syncopated arrangements in "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego". Like The Mills Brothers in popular music, they would often include vocal special effects in their songs, imitating train sounds in songs such as "Golden Gate Gospel Train". Langford often sang lead, using his ability to range from baritone to falsetto, while Johnson narrated. Wilson's bass served as the anchor for the group and Owens harmonized with Langford and Johnson. In 1940 the group signed a new contract with Columbia Record's Okeh label and shortened their name to Golden Gate Quartet. The quartet lost their pre-eminent position in gospel music after the war, when they faced competition from the newer hard gospel quartets. The Golden Gates revived their career in 1955, however, when they toured Europe for the first time where they became widely popular. The group made their first tour of Africa in 1962, and during the early 1960s gradually expanded their accompanying band to Incorporate guitar, piano, bass, and drums. The Golden Gates sang a lot of songs. One of the songs that I like to hear the group sing is God Told Nicodemus.

The Westerlies is a brass quartet including 3 former Seattle residents who formed the group when they were students at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of music. The quartet of two trumpets and two trombones is unusual in jazz, with no rhythm section or chordal instrument. Their repertoire is also unusually wide-ranging, including Americana, 20th century composers such as Bartok and Ives, original music and in their new album, spirituals inspired by the Golden Gate Quartet. The new album "Wherein Lies The Good" has just been released and they will celebrate with four performances in Seattle next week at the Westerlies Fest . Also featured on this week's show is new music by Portland trumpet player and composer Charlie Porter from his extended suite "Immigration Nation," and two albums nominated for Earshot's Golden Ear Awards for NW Recording of the year - Xavier Lecouturier's "Carrier" and Marina Albero's "A Life Soundtrack." Next week we feature a concert Tribute to Billie Holiday
Tonights episode pays homage to Billy Joe Shaver who politely asked his victim before shooting him in Papa Joe's Texas Saloon "Where Do You Want it....." before he could answer he shot Billy Bryant Coker because he was " such a bully"....when Billy Bryant dropped his knife and apologized Billy Joe informed him "Well, if you had said that inside, there would have been no problem..." CROOKED STILL from Boston starts it all off with "Angeline the Baker" followed by an ultra sexy Spanish version of "Scratch My Back" by SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS...Billy Joe Shaver and his son Eddie let everyone in on a family secret that "Blood is thicker than water". Finishing up the 1st set is an old 78rpm on the Okeh label from 1941..The Golden Gate Quartet with "Jezebel". Set 2 The Dukes from N'Awlin's on the Specialty label from 1954: "Ooh Bop She Bop" a 45 rpm. The Woolies barely acne free blast a Bo Diddley style rocker: "Who Do You Love" on Dunhill Records 1966 / another 45rpm from the vaults. Echoing my personal mantra of late is the Paul Butterfield Blues Band from Chicago with a killer version of BB KIng's "I got a mind to give up living" from the great raga influenced blues LP..."East-West" and a short trip over the border to Canada we blast aninyourface rocker from BY DIVINE RIGHT: Chinchilla Deluxe....wow! Set 3 Al Kooper with an early version of "I can't keep from crying sometimes" from the pretty terrific Elektra Records Sampler WHAT'S SHAKIN'...Kooper redid this tune with The Blues Project a short while later....The BProject was an early influence on this author having made the trip into NYC at least 8-10 times to check them out. Before THE ELECTRIC PRUNES kill it with their 3rd single "Get me to the world on time" we check out a Voxx Wah Wah ad featuring the Prunes....tre' 60's eh? John Hammond Jr. another early influence pounding my lobes in the 60's with "I wish you would" tips his hat to THE HINDU LOVE GODS covering PRINCE'S "Raspberry Beret"...The Love Gods are really R.E.M. sans Stipe with Warren Zevon stepping up to the mic...1990 that was recorded if my memory serves me well....we'll end this show with an outfit from San Francisco 1967..."The Endless Tunnel"....electric banjo, pretentious lyrics....it's the street I'm comfortable walking down.... Later for you.....

Aug. 7, 2013. Hailing from Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, the Northern Kentucky Brotherhood Singers are among the very few remaining gospel quartet-style groups that still perform in the old-school a cappella fashion. The Singers specialize in the intricate and emotional four-part harmony "jubilee" style pioneered by such legendary groups as the Dixie Hummingbirds, The Golden Gate Quartet, the Soul Stirrers and The Harptones of Cincinnati. They sing primarily Gospel but have recently added patriotic songs and feel-good R&B to their repertoire. The working title for this weeks show is Games, Dames & Diddy Wah Diddies but I've got a short attention span and usually stray way off the path so why should this be any different? Blind Blake recorded "Diddie Wah Diddie" around 1928 I'd 'recon....it's a masterful ragtime guitar tune where not too many answers for just what the fuck it is....intercourse, sex, penis are all candidates claiming the prize....but whether any of them get the gold is in the ears of the listener.....Starting off the Podcast with some upgrade 45's to the DRR Show...first is Roky Erickson & Arthur Lee's bastard child...Nova Local with their first slab of 7" wax "Games"..so at least we start the show off staying on course....focus, Mickster, focus......Don Gardner's ultra hip floor filler "My baby likes to boogaloo" hits the turntable running followed by an original first pressing of The Shondells' "Thunderbolt" on Snap. Thunderbolt is the b-side of the original recording of Tommy James & the Shondells frat hit "Hanky Panky" that was waxed in 1964 and just credited to The Shondells...by the time the song became a huge hit the band had broken up and James assembled a new lineup to go out on tour...you can read all about it in the terrific book by TJ tittled: Me, the Mob and the Music..Fabienne Delsol closes out the first set singin' to her mystery man "Mr. Mystery".The second set of music features soundbites by Samuel L. Jackson. SLJ is one of my favorite actors and if not only for Pulp Fiction should have glommed an Oscar...he was fantastic! And speaking of fantastic Captain Beefheart opens up the awards show with his first 45 rpm "Diddy Wah Diddy" on A&M records produced by David Gates of Bread fame....yikes! Samuel L follows up with some witty repartee before the Boonerasss!! from Germany give Dave Davies' "One Fine Day" a ride....SLJ with the immortal "Shup Up" soundbite before one of my favs Cub Koda offa his CUB DIGS BO hooky lau with "Mumblin' Guitar"...yeowza!! SLJ brings us back to earth with "Ezekiel" and the Golden Gate Quartet take the bait with a fire & brimstone 78 rpm "Jezebel" from 1941 on the Okeh record label. .... now sit down while your reading this....Rush opens the card at the podium and declares the Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things" as the winner...it's off of their really great 8 song EP that only came out on vinyl called FEEDBACK.....We still got some way to go, brothers & sisters, so don't leave the room because Georgio Morodor serves up a pretty cool synthesizer-less song off his LP from 1972 simply called "Son of My Father". It's from waaaayyyyy back when Morodor was just calling himself Georgio which for my money is the best crap he's ever done! In the words of Al Gore....."debate over, debate over...." Hey...speaking of Al Gore....do you think Tipper got tired of hearing how Bush stole the election from him or do you think that she got tired of listening to AG talking about Global Warming OR do you think she was doing the Diddy Wah Diddy with one of the farm hands on their palatial estate down thar in 'V'ginny? Gore's electric bill tipped $20,000 smackeroos per month...now THAT'S a carbon footprint. But on to less boring things than Al & Tipper....one more thing....how ahead of her time was The Tip on the Parential Advisory Warnings? 'eh?Link Wray doesn't give a flying diddy wah diddy so he keeps his mouth shut and plays his guitar like Tipper's nemesis Frank Zappa...a short moment of silence for FZ......ok.....now Link deserves a R.I.P. shoutout but my ears are still ringing from when I saw him at Asbury Lanes a couple of years ago....holy shit .....I didn't have to clean the wax out for a friggin year!! focus....focus....Link blows away the competion with "The Wild One" off of ACE Records 2007 release THE PATHWAY SESSIONS...a must have for all you headbanging metal morons....let Link show ya how it's done.Switiching gears The West Coast Pop Art & Experimental Band read "A Childs Guide To Good & Evil" .....somehow it m
Composer Thomas A. Dorsey and other pioneers of gospel music helped open the church doors to music considered sinful by conservative churchgoers. In the 1930s, Dorsey livened up the hymnal by incorporating elements of blues and jazz. Early "Sanctified" churches also influenced the restrained environment of mainline churches. Sanctified preachers encouraged the congregation to spontaneously burst into improvised musical lines to express their faith. Following in the footsteps of this stylistic freedom, groups such as the Golden Gate Quartet and the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi began ad-libbing in their jubilee style of gospel music. Jubilee is characterized by a strong, pumping bass, and lead vocals that ride the line between spoken and sung. The Golden Gate Quartet and other four-part choral groups showcased stunning solos and intricate harmonies. The tradition of gospel quartets continues to lift the spirits of both its listeners and participants in concert halls and churches alike.
