In the 2006 Torino Winter Games, first-time Olympian Lindsey Jacobellis missed out on the gold in the last second of the women's snowboard cross final. It was a devastating and unpredictable loss for “America's sweetheart” of snowboarding. Jacobellis would go on to attend the next three Olympic Games, falling short of the podium every time. That was until the 2022 Beijing Winter Games when everything came full circle for Jacobellis and her 16-year road to redemption. Jacobellis sat down with “In the Moment” host David Greene to re-live both of her career defining moments.

Few would have expected that spectators at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics would include animals. And yet, coverage of the event featured several sightings of wildlife, particularly leopard cats apparently seeking to get in on the action. On Jan 31, on the alpine ski slopes in Yanqing district, 90 kilometers northwest of Beijing, a leopard cat was spotted strolling through an award-ceremony rehearsal.1月31日,在距北京西北部90公里的延庆高山滑雪赛区,一只豹猫缓缓走过颁奖仪式的排练现场。 The event caught the attention of volunteers and staff, with many snapping photos. Three days later, a Chinese photographer captured another leopard cat in the woods near the Olympic ski slopes. The creature ran past him, jumped over a fence and looked back. Among those most excited by these sightings was Luo Shujin, an avid skier and a conservation biologist at Peking University. Leopard cats are wild felids, slightly larger than house cats, and they mostly steer clear of human activity. However, according to Luo, the frequent appearance of the animals close to the ski runs indicates that the species has persisted in this human-dominated landscape, which is relatively close to the megacity of Beijing. And, their calm demeanor suggests they are not frightened by human activity. ▲ 罗述金在冬奥会赛区(采访者供图)Luo says in the absence of any research data, it is too early to draw any conclusions that the creation of the Olympic skiing venue has not affected the surrounding forests and wildlife. However, she says it's possible that the wild cats have to some extent already adapted to coexistence with humans, likely because people at the venue have not shown an aggressive attitude toward the animals since its construction. Luo, 46, has been studying the wildlife around Yanqing for years. In December 2018, she was tracking leopard cat droppings on a hill when she discovered that the animals were living close to the ski resort. She found this surprising and decided to gather photographic evidence of wildlife in the area. I thought about that famous pictures of a puma walking by the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, and I asked myself: Can we get a picture of a leopard cat walking by the alpine ski course of the Beijing Winter Olympics?"“我立刻联想到一只美洲狮在夜幕下正从洛杉矶好莱坞标志前山梁上通过的那张照片。 Steve Winter/National Geographic CreativeTo examine the state of the animal's population, she and her colleagues set up 10 infrared cameras along 15 km of the hilly trail. The efforts paid off. They got pictures of many wild animals, including roe deer, badgers, gorals and wild boar. Leopard cats were photographed three times, the first one caught on camera in February last year—with the Olympic ski runs in the background. Who would have thought that this mountain trail, several kilometers away from the alpine skiing course of the Beijing Winter Olympics, would be frequented by leopard cats," she says.“有谁会想到呢,这条距离冬奥高山滑雪赛道不远的北京山野小径,居然是目前国内最频繁拍摄到豹猫的地方。”According to Luo, wild cats are rarely seen so close to big cities, especially metropolitan cities. I think this is a little-known side of Beijing," says Luo, who is proud that such wildlife can be found so close to the capital city.“这其实是北京鲜为人知的一面,” 罗述金说,她对能在距离首都如此近的地方看到这样的野生动物感到很自豪。 Luo sent the photo to the journal Science, along with a 300-word essay titled, The Hidden Olympic Spectator, which was published on July 23, 2021, the opening day of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games. She also shared the discovery with the 2022 Beijing Winter Games organizing committee, explaining its significance in terms of biodiversity, helping them to build a picture of the relationship between winter sports and nature. Luo's relationship with this Winter Olympics has not been all hard work. She has also found time to indulge her passion for winter sports. After several tests, she was appointed as a technical officer on the Olympic alpine skiing referee team, bringing her even closer to the action. For Luo, being surrounded by hundreds of athletes and spectators was a thrill—a marked contrast to her solitary fieldwork. I was deeply touched by the exchange and communication at this grand event that spans races, languages and countries," she says. "Such an event causes me to hope that we can leverage our strengths to ensure continued coexistence between wilderness and human settlements."“我们被跨种族、跨语言、跨国家的一次世界性盛会的交流和沟通而深深触动,” 罗述金说道,“这样的盛会让我希望能够贡献出自己的力量,让野生环境和人类环境的共存状态维持下去。” Now that the 2022 Winter Olympics have ended, Luo plans to continue her leopard cat research in Yanqing district, just as her many European counterparts have carried out studies on wildlife around ski resorts near the Alps. The alpine skiing site on the outskirts of Beijing will be an excellent place to study how wild animals share the same space with humans," she says. "As we watch the skiers racing down the slopes, I know that the striding leopard cat will be watching us."“北京附近的高山滑雪场地,是研究人和野生动物如何实现共享生存空间的绝佳地点。”

冬奥会志愿者伸出援助之手|Lending a helping handVolunteers play an integral part in the running of every Olympics, and the volunteer work at Beijing 2022 will leave an important legacy for years to come, according to the Games' organizing committee. Teng Shengping, director-general of the volunteer department of the Beijing organizing committee, said that after the Games an extensive review will be carried out to learn from, transform and promote volunteer work in the areas of human resources and digital and intellectual heritage. "After the Beijing Olympic andParalympicGames we will keep in touch with the volunteers to preserve talents for development. We will also review all the mechanisms, policies and projects formulated for the Gamesso they can contribute to the Olympic culture," Teng said.“北京冬残奥会结束后,我们将与志愿者保持联系,发展保留人才。 There are more than 18,000volunteers at the Beijing Winter Games, including those working directly in the competitions, as well as venue management, language services and media services. Ep.K311: The Winter Games — a different kind of Olympics The first so-called modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. But the inaugural Winter Olympics were not held until 1924 in Chamonix, France. From 1924 to 1992, the Winter and Summer Olympics were the same year. In '92 the Winter Games were celebrated in Albertville, France, followed by the Summer Games in Barcelona, Spain. Then change came. Since 1994, an Olympics has been held every two years. The '94 Winter Olympics took place in Lillehammer, Norway, followed by the Summer Games in 1996 in Atlanta, the US. Nagano, Japan, was next in 1998 with the Winter Games. That pattern was broken by the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Beijing Winter Games opened on Friday last week, just six months after Tokyo closed. They'll be followed by the Summer Olympics in 2024 in Paris, France. Here's a breakdown of why things have unfolded as they have. WHY WERE THE GAMES MOVED TO EVERY TWO YEARS? Olympic historian Bill Mallon suggests the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was looking for more revenue. The IOC, he says, “thought they could get more sponsorship money by spreading the Games out more.” Every two years also kept the Olympics in the public eye, and the move dovetailed with the increasing commercialization and professionalization of the Games. BEIJING: FIRST FOR BOTH WINTER AND SUMMER Beijing is the most unlikely city to be the first to host both Summer and Winter Olympics. Of all the Winter Olympic hosts, it has the least tradition in winter sports. Beijing was a longshot for 2022 until six European countries — including favorites Norway and Sweden — dropped out for cost or political reasons. Germany and Switzerland said “no” in referendums. The IOC was left to choose between Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Beijing Winter Olympics are expected to draw about 2,900 athletes from about 90 national Olympic committees. The Tokyo Olympics six months ago attracted 11,000 from just over 200 national bodies. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2022/02/08/2003772708

凯莉持续创佳绩|Kelly Keeps Crushin' ItThe list of "firsts" Kelly Sildaru has next to her name continues to grow after she secured bronze on Tuesday at the Beijing Winter Games, becoming the first Estonian athlete to win an Olympic medal in freestyle skiing. Born in 2002, she has also become the youngest Olympic medalist from Estonia in either the summer or winter edition of the Games. Wearing a black snow jacket and maroon pants, Sildaru stood out against the brilliant white course during Tuesday's final. With her signature long, blonde hair flowing out from her black helmet, the 19-year-old made one last check on her skis and poles before taking a deep breath and setting off on her run. The Estonian flagbearer was the last among all 12 athletes to set off in the final after she received the highest score (86.15) during qualification. She finished her first run with a 900-degree rotation and a tailgrab (grabbing the back of the skis). Her impressive moves and perfect landing gave her a score of 82.06, enabling her to nail a medal despite mistakes in the second run and a low-scoring third. Switzerland's Mathilde Gremaud won gold and China's Gu Ailing secured silver. My first run was pretty much like a safe run. That run brought me bronze. I mean I'm happy about it, but it would have been better when I could have put down a better run," she said post-race. Although the failure in the second run blocked her path to the gold medal, Sildaru is still enjoying herself at her first Olympics. When I'm skiing, I'm just going to do my best. So I just need to enjoy myself and I'm not trying to focus too much on the medals or on the podium or stuff like that. It's more about my skiing."“当我滑雪的时候,我会尽我最大的努力,我只需要享受当下。 Her passion for skiing and hard work have earned Sildaru a series of titles at a young age. At age 13 in 2016, she became the youngest gold medalist to date at a Winter X Games event, and the first person to win a Winter X Games medal for Estonia. She is also the youngest to win two X Games gold medals.2016年,13岁的希尔达鲁就成为了迄今为止最年轻的世界极限运动会金牌得主,也是第一位赢得世界极限运动会奖牌的爱沙尼亚人。 During the Big Air competition of the 2017 Winter X Games Norway, Sildaru became the first woman to ever land a switch 1260-degree mute and a 1440 degree during a competition. Because of her young age, Sildaru was not allowed to participate in the World Cup until 2017 in New Zealand, where she won the slopestyle competition. A knee injury denied her a chance to compete at the 2018 Winter Games, but she later recovered and won a gold medal in slopestyle at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games. Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines," Sildaru once wrote in a caption to one of her photos on Instagram. What makes Sildaru's achievements even more striking is that she hails from a virtually mountainless nation with an average elevation of around 300 meters. I'm usually training where I have competitions," she said. "Like maybe just going there two weeks earlier for my training and competitions, or we just stay longer." Spring in Finland, summer in France, and couple of months in New Zealand-Sildaru admitted she used to struggle between school and skiing: "It was a little hard at first. I graduated this spring, so it's been really nice to just focus on skiing," said Sildaru, who will turn 20 on Thursday. Sildaru will compete in the halfpipe qualification on her birthday, with the aim to make the final which will be held on Friday. maroon英 [məˈruːn];美[məˈruːn] adj. 讲台;讲坛;(乐队的)指挥台;颁奖台hail英 [heɪl];美[heɪl] n.
中国首枚自由式滑雪女子空中技巧赛金牌|Gold in Women's Aerials a First for ChinaEven when all the scores of the finalists in the women's freestyle skiing aerials were out on Monday evening, Xu Mengtao still couldn't believe she had just clinched the Winter Olympics gold medal that she had strived so long to win. Did I win? Did I win?" she shouted. Yes, the four-time Olympian finally did it at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The gold is also China's first in the event. At the moment the winner was announced, spectators at the competition venue, Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou, Hebei province, erupted with joy. As of Monday night, China had won five gold medals at the Beijing Winter Games, equaling its best previous result at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. Xu received 108.61 points for her final jump with three somersaults, which had a degree of difficulty of 4.293-the highest for female athletes. Hanna Huskova of Belarus took the silver with 107.95 points, followed by Megan Nick of the United States with 93.76. After successfully landing her final jump, Xu knew she had nailed it and screamed into the cold air, with the temperature hovering around minus 23 C.在圆满完成最后一跳后,徐梦桃知道自己成功了,她在零下约23摄氏度的寒冷空气中高呼。 Soon afterward, Ashley Caldwell of the US, who had been ranked first after the first round of the final and was the last athlete to jump-made a mistake on her landing and finished in fourth place. The payoff of hard work may come late, but it will come for sure," Xu, 31, said emotionally. "It's been a long journey, and I always have faith in myself."31岁的徐梦桃感慨道:“艰苦训练的回报可能会迟到,但从不会缺席。 Xu already owned 27 World Cup golds and received the highest score in the world for jumps among female aerial skiers. But she only managed to bring home a silver medal from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. Due to injuries, she finished sixth and ninth at Vancouver 2010 and Pyeongchang 2018, respectively, so winning Olympic gold has been a "lifelong desire", Xu said. I'm just super excited. This is the first gold medal won by China in women's aerials, and it's just super cool," she said after the victory. "I just wanted to do the best tricks I could and I did it, and that was all." China's Han Xiaopeng had won the country's first men's aerials Olympic gold medal at the 2006 Turin Winter Games. Caldwell said she was proud of Xu, whose nickname is Taotao. Taotao has been pushing triples for longer than I have, and I respect her wholeheartedly. For her to win the gold medal in her own country is an incredible accomplishment, and it brought tears to my eyes," the US skier said. Xu said she believes systematic training and keeping in good form brought her the gold medal. I've been in good shape for the past four years, so I've given my best to prepare for this moment. Today I only come here to see the result," she said. It's going to be a sleepless night for me. In this episode Lindsay Gibbs and Jessica Luther discuss big headlines from week one of the Beijing Winter Olympics. But first, they share their favorite Super Bowl LVI moments. Then, they discuss the some of the hottest topics of the 2022 Winter Games so far, including Eileen Gu, Mikaela Shiffrin and Kamila Valieva, and the ways that the commentary around these athletes is sexist, limiting and often times, just bizarre. They also discuss ski jumper uniform disqualifications, why women's hockey should stay in the Olympics and if athletes are using their platforms to speak to geopolitical issues. Following this discussion, you'll hear a preview of Lindsay's interview with Julie Kliegman, Chief Copy Editor at Sports Illustrated about trans swimmer Lia Thomas's fight to compete. Then, the team burns the worst of the sports this week in The Burn Pile. Next, they lift up those making sports better, including Torchbearer of the Week, Natalie Geisenberg, a 34 year old German luger who is now the most decorated Olympic luge athlete, with six gold medals and one bronze. They wrap up the show with what's good in their lives and what they are watching in sports this week This episode was produced by Tressa Versteeg. China has threatened the Biden administration with retaliation over its decision to impose a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, warning the move could harm bilateral relations. The Biden administration said Monday it would not send an official United States delegation to the Beijing Winter Games as a statement against China's "ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang." US athletes will still be allowed to compete in the Games.Responding to the White House announcement, China's Foreign Ministry said it had launched "solemn representation" with the US and vowed to take "resolute countermeasures.""Out of ideological bias and based on lies and rumors, the US is trying to disrupt the Beijing Winter Olympics. This will only expose its sinister intention and further erode its moral authority and credibility," ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a news conference Tuesday."The wrong move of the US has undermined the foundation and atmosphere for China-US sports exchanges and Olympic cooperation. It has shot itself in the foot. The US should understand the grave consequences of its move," Zhao said.Relations between the two superpowers had recently begun to improve, following last month's virtual summit between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. While the meeting yielded no significant breakthroughs, it allowed for a return to a more constructive, stable relationship, following a near total breakdown during the final year of the Trump administration and continued hostility into the Biden administration.Beijing has offered no clue as to what countermeasures it is considering, but the possibility of further retaliation now threatens to once again derail bilateral relations.Compared to the angry response of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, some Chinese diplomats and state media employees have offered a more nonchalant take on Twitter -- which is blocked in China -- stressing US politicians had not yet been invited to the Games."Politicians calling for boycott #2022BeijingOlympics are doing so for their own political interests and posturing. In fact, no one would care about whether these people come or not, and it has no impact whatsoever on the #Beijing2022 to be successfully held," tweeted Liu Pengyu, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the US.Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the nationalist tabloid Global Times, also weighed in."Why the fuss? If US officials don't come, let it be. China didn't invite them anyway." he tweeted. "Only super narcissistic people will regard their absence as a powerful boycott. Most of those US govt officials are close contacts of the Covid-19 patients according to China's standard, moreover picky and pretentious. You are the people that Beijing residents least want to see."While Beijing might not be too concerned about the absence of American politicians, it could turn into a bigger headache if the US move is joined by more countries. Previously, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have all said they were considering a diplomatic boycott.Activists have long called for a boycott of the Beijing Games in protest of China's human rights abuses in Xinjiang and Tibet, and its political crackdown on Hong Kong. Over the past month, Beijing's silencing of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai's sexual assault allegations against a former Chinese leader has further amplified such calls. The US diplomatic boycott has been welcomed by rights groups. Human Rights Watch called it a "crucial step toward challenging the Chinese government's crimes against humanity targeting Uyghurs and other Turkic communities.""But this shouldn't be the only action. The US should now redouble efforts with like-minded governments to investigate and map out pathways to accountability for those responsible for these crimes and justice for the survivors," Sophie Richardson, China director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. The potential snowball eff...
