What is the arrival fallacy?The arrival fallacy is the false assumption that once you reach a goal, you will experience lasting happiness. Many people become less happy after attaining something they have been striving towards. They were happier during the journey and less at the destination.Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, a Harvard-trained expert on positive psychology, created the term itself. Dr. Ben-Shahar says, “the arrival fallacy is the illusion of reaching a destination or goal and realizing that the achievement doesn't make you as happy as you thought it would.” He then adds, “while most people can predict what might may them happy, they usually misjudge the preconceived intensity and overall duration of said happiness.”It makes sense that when you're on a journey to some big audacious goal, from a big project launch to becoming a doctor to having a child to early retirement, you believe at the end of it, you'll reach an enduring level of happiness. Once people arrive at a goal and realize the happiness doesn't last, they set another bigger, better goal, constantly seeking something they believe will arrive at lasting happiness. And it doesn't. That's the fallacy.People experiencing the arrival fallacy might also mask their unhappiness that increases after their goal is achieved. This concept is often called “escalation of commitment” and is a human behavior pattern where someone facing negative consequences from a decision, action, or situation continues the behavior instead of altering their course. They are escalating their commitment to some path, even as they learn it might not be the path for them.  People mistakenly confuse happiness with reaching an achievement. Happiness is a lifelong journey. It's not one achievement. It's not one place you arrive at and then stay at. The insight here is that happiness is a journey, not a destination.  Is the arrival fallacy affecting your happiness?  Maybe. Probably. If you've reached a goal and you're not feeling continued happiness from it, then you're likely experiencing the arrival fallacy.You may feel incredibly happy after achieving a big goal, and that's awesome and hopefully the case. We don't mean to imply that working hard towards a goal can't create happiness. The arrival fallacy and what we want to help you avoid is the idea that achieving that big goal will create enduring happiness. It will create a short-term dopamine hit of happiness, and you need to design a life where you get those dopamine hits on an ongoing basis. Happiness is a lifelong journey, and we feel happiness through our relationships, community, and daily life efforts.Most of the ways you can fight the arrival fallacy involve changing your mindset. Of course, mindset is the solution to so many things in life, so we're not surprised by this!What can you do to combat the arrival fallacy and improve your happiness?Identify the core issue you believe is making you less happy or unfilled, and make sure the goal indeed corrects that.Do your research. Know what you're getting into. Talk to other people.Adjust your expectations. Based on the research you've done, adjust your expectations. Go in “eyes wide open,” and stop telling yourself you'll be so happy when xyz happens. It's not an arrival fallacy if you know what you're getting into and you're not expecting immediate and lasting happiness from a career path. On the contrary, setting your expectations too high creates more unhappiness and can lead to depression and other types of malaise. Set smaller, more practical goals. Enjoy the efforts and journey you're taking on the path of something versus expecting the final arrival on the path to be what creates happiness.Appreciate that happiness is your life journey, not the destination. Envision your future. Ask yourself what you'll do after you reach a goal that will continue to make you happy?Create new goals. Setting goals and then starting the journey to achieve them can make you happy. But let's bring that back full circle, as you need to understand the arrival fallacy so you can set your expectations on how you'll feel as you accomplish these new goals.  Things take time. Be patient.Handle hard better. This is a super short and inspiring talk from Duke's women's basketball coach Kara Lawson. She says life will “never get easier; what happens is you handle hard better. On the one hand, it has to be generic because it must be applicable to a wide range of subjects and individuals. On the other hand, individuals can't really apply the generic advice as it is - they need to complete the last mile of customization in order to apply it.This is the point of failure of many good theories and best practices that are found in self-help books, academic articles, and even advice from therapists - they are often lost in adaptation. There are two possible solutions to this problem. The first is to make customization easier. The second is to assume that we don't need to create all of the possible customized self-change plans that could ever exist, but rather just find the most effective ones for common problems. For instance, find the five most effective plans for the specific context of impostor syndrome within the specific context of EA. How can we find them? And do so for thousands of other common use cases? This is why we started VIVID. Theory of change Our theory of change is divided into two main parts: Short-term: Assist promising individuals in overcoming internal obstacles. This means faster progress on the world's most pressing problems when used by high-impact individuals like EAs. VIVID is meant to grow better at this point over time - the main idea behind its design is that it learns over time which self-change methods are most effective for each category (e.g. self-esteem, guilt, friendship, etc.), and for which user profiles. Long-term: The a priori chances of projects such as this becoming widespread are low (but we're optimistic!). However, the upsides are stellar. We could: Broadly promote the value of self-reflection. We believe that this point is of high importance, particularly in terms of mitigating risks associated with value lock-in (this idea is explained in WWOTF, ch. 3, and we will share a more thorough write-up about this soon). Accelerate progress in the wellbeing field and align it with large-scale evidence. In other words, we may discover scalable methods to improve wellbeing and individual potential in dozens of common use cases, relevant both to high-income and low-income countries. Abstract: How is sensory information routed through different types of neurons within a circuit, and do equivalent circuits in different individuals follow similar organizational principles? We examined this issue in the fruit fly olfactory system. Odor-evoked signals from sensory neurons (ORNs) triggered neural responses that were patterned over space and time in cholinergic ePNs and GABAergic iPNs within the antennal lobe. The dendritic-axonal (I/O) response mapping was complex and diverse, and axonal organization was region-specific (mushroom body vs. lateral horn). In the lateral horn, feed-forward excitatory and inhibitory axonal projections matched 'odor tuning' in a stereotyped, dorsal-lateral locus, but mismatched in most other locations. In the temporal dimension, ORN, ePN and iPN odor-evoked responses had similar encoding features, such as information refinement over time and divergent ON and OFF responses. Notably, analogous spatial and temporal coding principles were observed in all flies, and the latter emerged from idiosyncratic neural processing approaches. Copy rights belong to original authors. Tal Ben-Shahar, the professor of happiness, is famous for teaching the most popular course in the history of Harvard. It was called "Positive Psychology" and in it he teaches the secret to living a happy life. It's no wonder that at its peak, close to 1,000 students would pack into his lecture hall twice a week to hear his words of wisdom. He has since gone on to write several bestselling books including "Happier" and "The Pursuit of Perfection" and now travels the world giving seminars on leadership, happiness and gratitude. "Expressing gratitude on a regular basis – writing what you're grateful for before going to bed, can help us become not just happier and more optimistic, but also more generous, kinder toward others, and interestingly, physically healthier," Ben-Shahar told us. On today's episode, Tal reveals several ways that we can teach ourselves to be happy in our everyday life. Access Justice laws give people equal opportunity to enjoy primary goods, ensuring that access to these goods is not allocated by markets and is not tilted in favor of wealth and privilege. But Access Justice often fails to meet its egalitarian aspirations, because access and its benefits are deployed disproportionately by elites, yet paid for directly by public budgets and indirectly by weaker groups. In this lecture, Professor Ben-Shahar explains why Access Justice law can unintentionally hurt weak groups in a variety of areas — access to courts, information, insurance, internet, and many more. Omri Ben-Shahar earned his PhD in Economics and SJD from Harvard in 1995 and his BA and LLB from the Hebrew University in 1990. Before coming to Chicago, he was the Kirkland & Ellis Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Michigan. Prior to that, he taught at Tel-Aviv University, was a member of Israel's Antitrust Court and clerked at the Supreme Court of Israel. He teaches contracts, sales, insurance Law, consumer law, e-commerce, food and drug law, law and economics, and game theory and the law. He writes in the fields of contract law and consumer protection. He is the co-author of More Than You Wanted to Know: The Failure of Mandated Disclosure (Princeton 2014). Ben-Shahar is the Kearny Director of the Coase-Sandor Institute for Law and Economics, and the Editor of the Journal of Legal Studies. He is also the Co-Reporter with Oren Bar-Gill for the Restatement Third of Consumer Contracts. This lecture was recorded on March 3, 2015, as part of the Chicago's Best Ideas lecture series.

Professor Omri Ben-Shahar spoke on the "Myths of Consumer Protection" at this year's annual Ronald H. Coase lecture for first year law students. Ben-Shahar discussed why he believes the modern consumer protection movement is largely misguided. Consumer advocates cite three things that consumers need: information about products, access to courts, and remedies for wrongs done to them. In the eyes of the consumer advocate, a consumer cannot compete with large corporations without these three things. It would be David versus Goliath; and Goliath would always win.

Ben-Shahar, internationally acclaimed author of "Happier" and master teacher, argues that there are two components of self-esteem: dependent self-esteem and independent self esteem. Students working with the Center for Professional at Personal Ethics at Central Michigan University discuss these concepts and their relevance to academic integrity.
