This week we have an episode of The Black Castle, “Escape to Death,” from December 16, 1942. The Black Castle aired from 1942 to 1944 over the Mutual network. It was hosted by and starred the multi-talented Don Douglas in all roles. Find more from Brick Pickle Pulps at https://brickpicklemedia.com/podcasts/.
If you'd have tuned your radio to NBC's New York flagship, WEAF, at 7:30 PM on Tuesday February 8th, 1944 you'd have heard Ronald Coleman host the Autolite Sponsored, Everything For the Boys. The guest star was Greer Garson. NBC owned the ratings on Tuesdays with six of the top seven shows. Opposite of Everything For The Boys, CBS ran a concert, WOR-Mutual ran news, and WJZ of the Blue Network ran The Girl Back Home. “Barkley Square” is a fantasy play about a man who desires so much to go back in time that he somehow achieves it. At 8:00PM, The Ginny Simms Show took to the air. That month, the show's rating was 14.6. Roughly eleven million people tuned in. Opposite, CBS aired Big Town, WOR aired The Black Castle, while WJZ aired news. At 8:30 NBC aired A Date With Judy, a female-driven situation comedy starring Louise Erickson. Opposite CBS ran The Judy Canova Show, while WJZ aired Duffy's Tavern and WOR ran the quiz show, Battle of the Boroughs. This was the most competitive time slot as far as ratings went. In February A Date With Judy pulled a 9.6, while The Judy Canova Show pulled a 12.6, and Duffy's Tavern had a 14.6. Louise Erickson was three weeks shy of her sixteenth birthday. She held the role until 1949. The series was popular enough that, in response, CBS developed Meet Corliss Archer. After The Molle Mystery Theater aired at 9 PM, the three top-rated shows on radio aired in succession, beginning with the just-heard Jim Jordan co-starring in Fibber McGee and Molly. The February 8th episode was called “Homemade Ice Cream” and had a rating of 35.7. More than twenty-seven million people tuned in. After Fibber McGee and Molly signed off, Bob Hope's Pepsodent Program signed on at 10PM.

It's time to paddy like the Irish do! Today we are discussing The Black Raven Irish Pub in Harrah, OK. Stop in to the Black Raven and enjoy an authentic Irish pub, right in the heart of historic Harrah. Taste the Emerald Isle with pub standards like a Scotch egg or Guinness chips- Irish chips blanketed in Guinness cheddar sauce. Continue your experience with traditional favorites such as fish-n-chips, shepherd pie, corned beef cabbage or bangers and mash. The pub kitchen also features other Irish staples like shepherd pie filling, bangers or Guinness cheddar. Pub food and draft beer go together like bangers and mash or fish and chips. Of course, Guinness tops the tap list here, but the Dublin brew is seconded closely by Harp, Smithwick's, Strongbow Cider and Killian's Red. The bar keep to pull several traditional beer mixes such as an All-Irish Black & Tan, Black Castle, Snake Bite or Half & Half. If none of these fit the bill, choose a brew from their extensive bottle list, including a selection of root and ginger beers. In true pub fashion, Black Raven hosts a regular selection of weekly bands, so order up a pint and enjoy a song or three. Harrah calls itself the "best kept secret in Eastern Oklahoma County" with all the hospitality of a small town while be close to the city attractions. If you enjoy gaming, stop in at the Kickapoo Casino and test your luck on the slots and blackjack table, and don't miss the annual Harrah Day celebration full of family fun that celebrates the founding of the town. Also discussed: Onlyinokshow, Travelok, Route 66 and Tulsa People. It's all been leading to this: for Titus. If Paperkeg has meant anything to you over the years, or even recent TAPEDECK podcasts, please considering giving to the GoFundMe for The Comic Book Shop in Delaware. High up among the black lava crags of Perea stood the dismal fortress of Macherus. Behind its close prison bars a restless captive groped his way back and forth in a dungeon cell. Sometimes, at long intervals, he was given such liberty as a chained eagle might have, when he was led up into one of the towers of the gloomy keep, and allowed to look down, down into the bottomless gorges surrounding it. For months he had chafed in the darkness of his underground dungeon; escape was impossible. It was John Baptist, brought from the wild, free life of the desert to the tortures of the "Black Castle." Here he lay at the mercy of Herod Antipas, and death might strike at any moment. More than once, the whimsical monarch had sent for him, as he sat at his banquets, to be the sport of the passing hour. The lights, the color, the flash of gems may have dazzled his eyes for a brief space, accustomed as they were to the midnight darkness of his cell; but his keen vision saw, under the paint and purple of royal apparel, the corrupt life of king and court. Pointing his stern, accusing finger at the uneasy king, he cried, "It is not lawful for... #story #kidsstories ✝️❣️
It's Queen Farin Bachknife-Orijiabi's birthday, and among the guests attending the celebration at the royal palace in Highseat are an adventurer-turned-courtier named Nicholas Corso and a tiny, talkative thief from the future named Marm Goodwill. She brings Corso and Marm along with her, and together they begin a risky airship voyage to Blackpool's capital, Col Sador. Only after bloody battles with ruthless sky pirates and barbaric dogmen does the party learn of Bane's true intentions - a plot that would see reality sucked out of existence. With the fate of Gonen's World resting on their shoulders, the heroes' only option is to infiltrate the Black Castle and stop Bane before it's too late.

Do you need a guitar monster? Better break out the Reverend!! Rory and Shane were granted a real treat by spending some time on the phone with the mystical being himself, "B-ILL" Bill Fowler. The shredding lead guitarist for Sound of Urchin has been an infamous musical figure in the New Hope PA music scene since the early 90's, and has the stories to prove it! In this call the Rev schools Shane and Rory on the early days of living in the infamous Brookridge Farm, being able to lay down guitar on Ween tunes like "Skycruiser", the John and Peters weekly "Invitational" jam, Bill and Fred's Excellent Adventure with Fred Moore, and of course, guitars!!! Heinrich Himmler, second in command only to Adolph Hitler, rebuilt Castle Wewelsburg (pronounced VIVES-BORK) in Germany to house special meetings which included all types of idol worship and satanic rituals for his SS commanders, to which he gave Death's Head rings to symbolize their lifelong devotion to the Nazi party. The castle served as a training academy for new SS, where they were steeped in Himmler's own view of Aryan history, a center for exploration and archeology that supported his theories of a master race, and a laboratory for engineering study of a crashed UFO which was brought there for study., and from which the Nazi's developed a flying saucer. Over 11,500 "death rings" were returned to Himmler, who hid them prior to the end of the war, one legend being that he buried them in a crypt below the castle. Asaph, with over 6 weeks since his last drink, shares his story… A link to the mentioned Russell Brand podcast episode with Gabor Maté. Gratitude, what is it good for?... everything. Gratitude is a topic that needs to be continually covered in recovery. It’s a box in recovery that will never be checked, because it is ongoing. How do we create a mindset of appreciation? Apply some conscious attention to the things in your life that are there for you, whether it be people, or your left elbow. Don’t take things or people for granted. Remove or avoid the sources of negativity in your life. Gratitude is good for our brains. It positively stimulates the hypothalamus. We can’t function without grace. We are wired to be a grateful species. It’s easy to be thankful for the good things in our lives, but what about the not so good times? Gratitude can help us get through life’s challenges. In fact, we can even become thankful for them. Challenges and obstacles become our teachers and often send us on paths we wouldn’t always go down on our own. We can, and must, find joy in everything. SHOW NOTES [11:58] Paul Introduces Asaph. Asaph is 37 years old from Windsor, Ontario. Sober for over 6 weeks. He was raised in a cult called “The Children of God”. He lived in India, and had 5 children. He and the wife split, and that’s when he began to drink heavily. He’s a waiter, though he pursues art as a professional career. [16:15] Give us a little background about your drinking. He began to hit the bottle hard when his marriage fell apart. He was around age 31 when he had his first drink. He left the cult around 28. He remembers alcohol being a guide, allowing him to be himself. When he explored recovery, he learned that he had a lot in common with other people. He tried to moderate, etc. He would black out and swear that he would never drink again. He found himself going against his word. [23:13] Did you experience a rock bottom moment? He feels that he had many. He realized that rock bottom was a moment when one decides that enough is enough. [25:20] How did you finally end up quitting? His sister helped him sign up for rehab. She convinced him that he had a problem. He had many relapses. He realizes that he can learn from them. [30:30] What are some of the lessons you have learned in relapse? We need one person to be 100% vulnerable and honest with. He needed to get out of his own head a bit. He finds it spreads into other relationships as well. [32:45] What is a typical day in your recovery look like? He listens to recovery podcasts. He enjoys Cafe RE. He recognizes when he wants to feel isolated. His default setting is alone. He needs human contact to keep a more positive perspective. [35:51] Have you figured out why you drank? It was his default coping mechanism for everything. [37:10] What have you learned about yourself in recovery? His recovery is directly connected to his entering the public world. Drinking became the way he discovered the outside world. He wants to get his business up and running. He feels like he can do anything that he puts his mind to. [39:40] Have you had any cravings and what do you if they appear? He believes cravings don’t last more than 20 minutes. They used to paralyze him because he thought they were forever. [40:50] Rapid Fire Round What was your worst memory from drinking? Woke up half drunk and he knew that he was powerless to a bottle of vodka by his bed. Did you ever have an “oh-shit” moment? When he lost his driver’s license. He looked back in hindsight and he realized that something worse could have happened. The moment was gradual. What’s your plan moving forward? He will continue to do what works. He uses Cafe RE. He wants to surround himself with people and books that continue to inspire him. What’s your favorite resource in recovery? A million little pieces by James Grace. Black Castle. My Fair Junkie. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (on sobriety)? The idea that you can put the shovel down whenever you want to. What parting piece of guidance can you give listeners who are in recovery or thinking about quitting drinking? If you relate to a lot of the bullet points when you google what a alcoholism is like, you probably have a drinking problem. You might be an alcoholic if… “.. you are drinking in the middle of the night because you feel you can’t go without it.” Resources mentioned in this episode: Connect with Cafe RE- Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY for your first month free Sobriety Tracker iTunes Sobriety Tracker Android Russell Brand Podcast - the mentioned episode with Gabor Maté Sober Selfies! - Send your Sober Selfie and your Success Story to info@recoveryelevator.com “We took the elevator down, we gotta take the stairs back up, we can do this!”

I met Richard White when I went on one of his Sweet Waters walks along the Avon, exploring the legacies of the Transatlantic slave trade. This podcast is a walk we took down the Avon to the Black Castle pub, via a closed path and the weir that stops the Avon being tidal, and had all kinds of experiences along the way. We talked about his Sweet Waters project, how Richard uses walking and social media in his art practice, and what we saw as we went. You can find photos we took and links to Richard's work on my website, https://avonstories.com/2017/08/08/avon-stories-10-richard-white/
