Mary Elaine and Brett Baker are the co-founders of VAUSA, a virtual assisting company. Brett spent 13 years as an Army Ranger doing multiple deployments. To say this was putting stress on the family would be an understatement. By the 5th year, the burnout was real and he realized he wasn't “showing up” like he wanted. So, they did what anyone would do. They started a company with a wild vision of creating 350 jobs for military-affiliated individuals.

Our beloved Huskers are on the road for a Friday night game in Champaign. They are winless in the last three attempts against the Illini. However, the last time they played Illinois in Champaign on a Friday night, Nebraska was victorious. It was 2017. It shouldn't seem like so long ago. So why do we have games on Friday night? What is Nebraska's chance of winning? Who will stand out in the game? Will we even answer these questions? It seems like we write them in this pre-show post but we never address them in the show. We blame/thank the Chatterfields. You're great!
This week, Jon's in a lodge somewhere watching Cocaine Bear with and and reacting accordingly, so Greg called in some familiar faces to join him on the show this week. Todd is here, and he's supposed to play the role of the crotchety old man, but he's surprisingly pleasant and upbeat. And making his Five Heart debut is legendary Husker fan and all-around superb individual Brett Baker. Brett shares his thoughts on the Day by Day documentary among other Husker topics. One of the main topics, predictably, is the alternate uniforms that were revealed this week in a stellar video package. Owning the fact that 100 years ago, Nebraska donned blue uniforms to welcome Oklahoma, because THEY BOTH CAN'T WEAR RED, the Huskers will have a thin blue outline around the numbers for one game in October. But Greg is more impressed by the details on the shoulders, as they replicate the four stone carvings around Memorial Stadium. Brett however thinks the thin blue line isn't enough and wants Nebraska to fully embrace the blue...for one game only. Also, and I can't believe I'm saying this...we haven't seen the blackshirts yet. What is Matt Rhule's plan on one of the more storied traditions within the program? These topics and others are all part of an all-new Five Heart Podcast.
Welcome to a new podcast series called Brass Bands: On the Record! It features a familiar voice (Mark Good) and a fresh face, in Lillie McCluskie. He chats about commissioning new music for the trombone, which has been a big priority for him, looks back at his musical roots - and even reveals why he was a millionaire's gardener!

How can we measure water when it disappears into thin air? On this episode of What About Water? we're looking at evapotranspiration, or “ET” for short. It's the combination of water evaporating from the soil, combined with the measure of water transpiring through crops' leaves. Accounting for this water loss helps farmers know exactly how much water they should apply across their fields, and new agricultural technologies and satellites are making it much easier. Jay sits down with California State University at Monterrey Bay Senior Research Scientist – and former student – A.J. Purdy, whose doctoral thesis looked at the advancement and applications of satellite-derived ET algorithms. We also hear what this looks like in real life, with Brett Baker, a sixth-generation California pear farmer and lawyer. With the ever-present risk of flood on his family's land in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, Baker explains how OpenET is helping farmers like him and his father take better measurements of consumptive use. Robyn Grimm, Interim Director of OpenET, tells us how this open-source platform is making big waves.

Art. What is it? Is your photography Art? Are you an artist? There's many different opinions about this idea of art and photography. One thing is for sure, a photographer is a creative person, generally speaking anyway. But when you apply the term of art, when and why would you do that? What's the point? Does it matter? Today I've got a wonderfully special guest joining me on this topic and I'm just loving it. This is Latitude Photography Podcast, Episode 124 for August 3, 2021 August Topic The topic for August, 2021 is #InTheCity. Please get your submissions in by the 24th of August to be considered for the broadcast on the 26th. I'll be on YouTube and I'm planning on doing it once again at 6:15 p.m. and we'll see how that works for us once again. Submit images to the facebook group with the hashtag InTheCity and let's see what you've got. =And the design principle I'd like to see us focus on, if possible, is Color. Any color will work. Looking for ways to either showcase a single color, lots of color, anything to do with color. Let's see what you can come up with. Minnesota water-FALL-color Workshop info: Sign up today! https://brentbergherm.com/workshops/minnesota-waterfall-and-fall-color-workshop/ In a previous episode I'd mentioned the conundrum about my L bracket with the R5. I went with the Three legged thing as it's orange and all the others, from RRS to the cheap brands all looked the same. So I actually made my decision based on color. But it doesn't allow for full articulation of the flippy screen which stinks. Well, listener Ej Linser brought to my attention the PMG bracket https://www.promediagear.com/PLCR56--L-Bracket-Plate-for-Canon-EOS-R5-R6-Mirrorless-Camera_p_475.html Which does allow for full articulation since the vertical mount portion is not aligned with the side of the camera. I feel kinda dumb for not looking up the PMG option since my bracket for the 5D4 is by PMG and I literally thought to myself, I should look up PMG and see what they have before I hit the buy button here… But alas, I didn't. So Ej earns a gold star for this recommendation :) MAIN TOPIC Photography as fine art. Way back on June 22, I posed a question in the facebook group. I said, “When you hear the term “Fine Art” do you think it applies to your photography? As in, do you see yourself as a fine art photographer or maybe… Do you aspire to have your works be considered fine art? Is Fine Art to “stuffy” of a term? Today, I have a special guest to help me think through this topic. She is Erin Babnik, Erin Welcome to the show! Talking Points: Let's assume there's two or three listeners out there who don't know you or your work. What would you like for them to know about you, your work and I'd like to know how you got started as a photographer. Your Quote on your Canon Explorer of Light page states, “Exploration is the key to creativity. The more that you find to photograph, the more that you find yourself.” (further thoughts and commentary shall ensue!) Fine Art. It's kind of loaded. I'd like to know your thoughts on the topic and then we'll get in to what the listeners have said and we'll comment on those as well. So your thoughts on Fine Art and how Photography is a part of that. And also, has the photography industry ever really settled on it means to have photography considered as fine art? That seems to be the listener comments that we'll get to in a moment. Aref Alragehi says, “I personally don't think it applies to me but I hope to get there one day. The reason I say that stems from my understanding of what it means which may not be accurate. Basically I think Fine Art is for a meticulous piece of work not just from a composition perspective but all the way through the print creation, the medium it is printed on the framing and perhaps even the lighting recommended for best viewing. I think there has been also an over use of the term I mean just because the photo is in B&W or it is a long exposure photo does not make it fine art Josh Austin states, “I have always understood fine art to be simplistic in nature. Something that could be hung on a wall anywhere in the world, not constrained by geographic area, genre, or style. I guess "tastefully simple" would be how I would understand it.”And then after some further thought he clarifies, “tastefully, intentionally, simple. I think intentionality is important, a simple composition should not come across as lazy or uninspired but be intentional.” Brett Baker says, “I have seen some pieces that seem to be labeled "fine art" for marketing reasons. I feel like the photography community has not come together on a distinct definition. Some say that it's impossible for photography to be "fine art" because it doesn't require the same degree of skill as other media. Others seem to think that minimalism is the only way to achieve "fine art". Personally, I think that truly "fine art" is capable of stirring some type of emotion in various people and for various reasons, regardless of the medium.” Stanley Harper doesn't view the term Fine Art to be a “stuffy” term. And he points out that even automotive photography can be a form of Fine Art. And he wrapped up his thoughts by saying, “I do consider some of my work to be "fine art" and there is such a thing as "fine art photography" and yes, that term can be used to describe even those shots that are clearly within the journalistic sphere because the shooter took an approach to create an image that will be a wall hanger.” Zelda Zaragoza Johns agrees with Aref a bit. “I don't know if I consider the term overused so much as misused. Some wedding photographers call themselves fine art photographers. I personally believe you can't call yourself a fine art photographer if you're delivering hundreds of digital images to a client.” Maybe there's other ways the term is misused as well? Kirk Keyes chimed in with, “What I find pretentious is "Giclee", if anyone still uses that!!” Aaron Martinez, a photojournalist, says, “I'm not even sure what the term “fine art” actually means in relation to photography.” Joel Galbraith responded to Aaron with the idea that planning really goes into it. Planning locations, how the shot is made, and what you do in post production. But Erin, in your quote we started this conversation with, you start with the word “exploration” which signifies to me a bit of the unknown. A sense of discovery. This seems to be the opposite of Joel's approach. Alan Comer describes it this way, “The thing they seem to have in common is that those images (I like to think) make you want to stop and spend some time in them rather than just a passing glance.” Darren Whiteley has an interesting thought. He says, “I find the photography community's overwhelming desire to label or constrain artistic freedom as one of its negatives. Why can't you be a photographer that enjoys all genres? Those that have ability to turn their skills to all of the genres are often frowned upon, particularly in critiques when they provide examples of work from more than one genre - it is as if excelling at one somehow makes you more of an artist than someone who has transferable skills.” David Medeiros says, “I do think of my work as fine art, or at least that's the intention with my BW photography.” I have to admit, I've had some similar thoughts about my B&W work but I think it's because that was the pivot point of my work as purely done for myself vs for my agent to sell. As I've not submitted to my agent in a LOOOONG time, that idea of B&W only as my fine art work is weakening. My color work is seen more as fine art in my view now. Introduction Welcome to Latitude Photography podcast, I am Brent Bergherm, and it’s my pleasure to be your host. I’m a travel/outdoor photographer and if I’m not out there shooting pictures I sure am dreaming about it. Sometimes to the point where it affects my work, and that’s not good but it’s the way it is. Announcements Today’s topic of discussion is the Under the Sun images. The point and purpose was to photograph the sun with something interesting between you and the sun. It could be high up in the sky, low to the ground, doesn’t matter. This was already broadcast on my YouTube channel, and we did the recording live as well. At the time of this recording it has 75 views. My biggest question to you is, is it valuable to have this also reproduced in the audio format? Let me know. I’ve been doing some image reviews for quite a while, whether it’s my own, guest’s images or images from listeners like in today’s show. I just want to be sure you get something out of this so I appreciate any feedback you can provide me. Also, the next topic is In the Water. We’re looking for a photograph of something that is literally in the water. It could be something you did while scuba diving, or something that is getting drenched in the rain. Go beyond the photograph of water and show something actually in the water or otherwise interacting with the water. I also put a poll in the fb group which is getting some great responses. Thanks for all those who have participated already. The question is related to how you see yourself as a photographer. I added the options of Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced/Pro-level. Matt Bishop chimed in with a poll option and said that he’s “completely lost.” Thanks Matt, I’m going to go ahead and say you’re in the right place then :) Mike Regas added an option that says “somewhere between advanced and intermediate.” So far the results are about what I expected. 65 are saying Intermediate and 46 are saying somewhere between advanced and intermediate. 32 are saying “advanced/pro-level, 8 said beginner, and 2 said “experienced” which was an option I added later. Sandy Glenn Brown added an option that says, “Yesterday I would say a definite intermediate until the wedding I shot last night. Now I’m not so sure :(“ I totally understand that, and I think that resonates with a lot of what others were saying in the comments too, in that it depends on the specific genre you’re talking about. I got quite a few comments about not feeling comfortable with putting a label on their creativity and the skill set etc. I totally get that. I’m just glad to see the conversations happening. It’s good to talk these things through. In fact, before the month is over, we’ll actually have an episode dedicated to understanding your photography, or maybe better put, understanding your place in photography and what you get out of it, and what you do with it. I just finished the slide deck today and I’m going to record it later this week with Lori Rowland. I’m really looking forward to it for sure! If you’ve not got on to respond to the poll I encourage you to do so. Especially if you’re a beginner. I would LOVE to hear from you. Other things happening in the group: Jennifer Grant-White submitted a picture asking for some feedback. It was her first post so it’s great to see those first time items coming in for sure! Brett Baker asked about tips for photographing water when you don’t have a circular polarizer filter. And we’ve had some great responses come in from suggesting dawn and dusk when it’s not such a big deal to get the reflections and glare that can happen. Brie asked what types of images he typically shoots, and that’s a great question because it’ll help us give some specific advice. Others like Mike Regas and Alyce Bender said similar things and that is to find a way to embrace the glare. My thoughts... MAIN TOPIC Today is all about Under the Sun. Images have been posted to the website for the show notes and to the facebook group. Enjoy the conversation! Introduction Welcome to Latitude Photography podcast, I am your host, Brent Bergherm, and it’s my goal to help you create better photographs. I’m a travel-outdoor photographer with over 23 years of shooting and 14 years’ teaching experience. Thanks for being here, where we look to continually learn, grow, create and be inspired. Current Topic: Under the Sun My websites episode got postponed until later (recording in a few days) so I put an inquiry in the fb group asking for more questions you’d like answered. And a few of you came through wonderfully and I’m very grateful. However, one of you asked about books, and I went wild. So, before we get into all the details there, let me quickly address a few of the other questions and then we’ll dive deep into the books discussion. Brie Stockwell, a Latitude Regular, asked for tips on staying motivated. I’d also like to include thoughts on not letting life bog you down. Brett Baker asked about only having one lens, what range would I go for. Jason Torres asked about the books, and I’ve got a bunch for you, that’s coming very shortly. Jennifer Utsler asked, “Best ways to find your subject and composition in a landscape with no obvious subject.” I love this question... And Lori Rowland chimed in with all sorts of ideas relating to going on a photo trip with someone who’s also a photographer. There’s many benefits to that. OK, now on to the books. However, I went overboard. Let me explain… THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S LIBRARY on my website: https://brentbergherm.com/info/photographers-library Reminders Find us on the web at http://latitudephotographypodcast.com Find me on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/brentberghermphoto/ Find the podcast facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/latitudephotographypodcast/ Find me on instagram @brentbergherm Find me on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/c/brentberghermphotography Find me online at https://brentbergherm.com

Fresh off an unexpected bye-week the Big Red is back on the road, this time to Evanston, Illinois to take on B1G rival Northwestern. If history is any guide this one should be wildly entertaining. Get ready for the matchup with 'The N Report Podcast'.

The bad is the pain inflicted by Brett Baker and the Truth or Dab game he decided to bring along with him. For this episode, we just played Truth or Dab. It's a game where you either have to answer the question posed or suffer capsaicin. 2 million+ scovilles, according to Brett. Listen in as we reveal personal details and suffer when we don't. All while drinking Oktoberfest, Pink Guave Flamango Cider and Czech Please Pilsner from Stone Hollow. This week, I'm joined by Brett Baker, owner of Sandler Training in Springfield, MO. Brett works with many different BG distributorships across the country, helping them develop and implement a unique sales process using Sandler Training methods. In this episode, we discuss alternatives to the feature/benefit method of sales, upending the customers expectations of what a sales call should sound like, permission based selling on the service drive, and many of the interesting rules that the Sandler Training system uses to govern interactions with customers. I found this to be a fun and thought-provoking conversation, and if you enjoy delving into the theory behind sales methods, I think you'll enjoy it, as well. If you would like to learn more about Sandler Training, visit www.sandler.com, or if you want to get in touch with Brett directly, reach him at bbaker@sandler.com. An episode full of original music for brass band some of it bringing together the best contemporary talents such as Lucy Pankhurst’s Concerto written for Owen Farr alongside music by the brass band’s most popular living composer Philip Sparke written for and played by Brett Baker. Frank reflects upon a piece from 1922 by film composer Hubert Bath, his Freedom Symphony No.1 written for the National Championships and follows that with the all to rarely heard Fantasy for Brass Band by another composer known, amongst other music, for his film scores Malcolm Arnold , also written for the National Championships. Great music all.
*In the final part of this 6 part series, listen as Paul explains his partnership with Many Mansions, a nonprofit that provides housing to homeless families in the area - including veterans specifically.* On this week’s edition of Farm Talk with Paul Ward, Mary Elaine and Brett Baker join Paul to discuss The Patriot Advantage Personal Assistants, a service Paul uses and finds extremely helpful with his business. Mary Elaine and Brett are the founders of The Patriot Advantage Personal Assistants, and they share the story of how they got started in the business, and what makes their virtual assistant company truly unique. The Patriot Advantage can help with Business & Personal Administrative Services, Marketing Services, Lifestyle Concierge Services, Private Travel Management, Customer Support & Client Relationship Management. They also know that each person and business is unique, therefore all services are flexible and customized for you. Tune in to learn more! Signs you need the help of The Patriot Advantage Personal Assistants: You desire more time to pursue your passions, focus on your goals, or simply relax. You’re overwhelmed with your current workload but struggle with how and who to delegate tasks. You spend hours in your inbox and you’re missing important calls, emails, and follow-ups. You’re having trouble keeping organized, on task, and on-schedule. A letter from Mary Elaine and Brett Baker: Dear friend, Our hope is that you are on this page not just to learn more about Patriot Advantage, but also and more importantly about who we are as individuals. We’re all familiar with the reality of modern life where the technology that makes us so interconnected also makes us feel isolated. Artificial intelligence is enabling machines to perform more and more complicated tasks, and consumers want goods and services at the speed of lightning, conveniences that come at a higher price than what’s on the tag. We intended from the inception of PA to make sure we never let keeping up with this fast-spinning world take precedence over the importance of establishing close and valued relationships. To put it simply, we believe that values and people matter. We spend an average of a third of our lifetime working. Arguably, entrepreneurs spend more than that. Considering so much of our life is spent at work, we believe that time spent making personal connections will drive success – and give it meaning – every bit as much as getting the job done efficiently and well. What we have achieved at PA, and strive to maintain, is an experience that combines the convenience of remote work with a culture that fosters empathy, respect, and a true investment in each other. Emotional intelligence, a true servant’s heart, and a genuine desire to see others succeed in life is something AI will never be able to touch. What keeps us motivated each day are the stories of the relationships being built – stories of the hard work, skill, and attention that our team members give selflessly to make each entrepreneur feel cared for and valued in our hands, and stories of military spouses supporting their families and each other while investing in their entrepreneurs’ success. We think matching people who know what it means to serve with people who know what it means to create doesn’t just make for better business, it makes for better lives. Will you join us on our journey? Our hope is that you will. In service, Mary Elaine and Brett Contact The Patriot Advantage Personal Assistants Also visit: https://www.thepatriotadvantage.com/

So there I am, watching my niece’s kindergarten basketball game last Saturday morning. You know the type. They have fifteen-minute halves where the clock doesn’t stop. They don’t keep score. And it’s all about going out and having fun. No real rules. I was having a mild anxiety attack as kids were running the ball up the court. But hey, it gives them something to do after farming season (my sister married a farmer and they live in a small farming town…nice town). So there I am, watching my niece’s game and I’m repping the Big Red. I have my Huskers hoodie on that Brett Baker delivered to me in person three years ago when he and his daughter Jessica went to the Nebraska-Illinois game in Champaign. You remember the one. The one we lost. [Expletive Deleted]. My dad says, not prompted at all, something along the lines of “I’m taking Illinois today.” I laughed. Not mockingly. Not boisterously. Just laughed. Then after the game, my son and I went to “grandma and grandpa’s” house as my mom made pancakes and bacon for everyone. I watched a little of the game before and after breakfast, then helped my dad do some winterizing stuff outside. Now I tell you all of that to tell you this. I DVRed the game and started watching it Saturday night. I finished watching it Wednesday evening before we started recording. In this milestone 100th episode, we talk about the big win over Illinois and why Adrian Martinez and Devine Ozigbo are deserving of their conference accolades this week. We talk about science, but I can’t remember how we got on that topic. And Patrick Gerhart joins us to talk about Nebrasketball’s hot start, including the win this week over Seton Hall! Jon also has a story or two from his undergrad days and my son looks like he’s going to pee on his bed. So it was a wild and crazy night! Brett and I first met in junior high in Long Beach. We ran in similar circles and were always friendly with each other, but never really hung out. Come to fond out we both got into the culinary industry about the same time. I had a blast with this interview! Field employees like to complain about headquarters yet central offices do provide some essential support services. At the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the regulated power plants maintain direct contact with the agency's Headquarters Operations Center, a 24/7 operation. If it's not fully staffed, the strains start to show. For more, Brett Baker, the NRC's assistant inspector general for audits, joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

The mission of The Parent Child Center of Tulsa is to prevent child abuse and neglect through education, treatment, and advocacy. Looking to sell your Tulsa area home? Get a free home value report Looking to buy a Tulsa area home? Click here to browse Tulsa homes for sale Today I’m excited to be joined by special guest Carey Baker. I had the opportunity to ask Carey some questions about her involvement with The Parent Child Center of Tulsa. Her and her husband, Brett Baker, are Co-chairs for Toyland Ball 2018. The Toyland Ball, held every January, is The Parent Child Center of Tulsa’s annual signature fundraising event. This black tie gala featuring a whimsical theme offers an elegant evening of dinner and dancing, with a live auction. I caught up with Carey at the Toyland Ball Stock the Bar Party where attendees bring a bottle of wine valued at $50 or more to be auctioned off at the Toyland Ball 2018 in January. In past years, the wine auctioned off at the event in January has raised between $8,000 and $10,000 for The Parent Child Center of Tulsa. That is just the money raised from auctioning the wine. There are other items that are auctioned off that raise even more money for the cause. For those of you who may not know, the mission of The Parent Child Center of Tulsa is to prevent child abuse and neglect through education, treatment, and advocacy. People who have been victims of abuse or neglect are given education and counseling so that they are able to end the cycle. Many people only know what they’ve been taught, so The Parent Child Center of Tulsa aims to reverse this. If you’re interested in attending, the Toyland Ball auction will take place on January 20th, 2018 at the Cox Business Center. For tickets, visit www.ParentChildCenter.org. You can also become a patron sponsor by donating $1,000 for two people. At the event, there will be raffles, an auction, and a live band. Also, all of the proceeds go directly to the counseling funds for The Parent Child Center of Tulsa. We hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! If you have any other questions or would like more information, feel free to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
