The ONE Campaign, originally founded as Debt AIDS Trade for Africa (DATA) in 2004, is a global advocacy organization dedicated to driving investments and creating economic opportunities in Africa. Over the past 20 years, ONE has continually evolved to address the continent's most pressing challenges, ensuring its work remains relevant and impactful. ONE advocates for justice and equity in Africa's global relationships. At its core, the organization is committed to advancing Africa's own vision—the continent as an equal player on the world stage. In this episode of Into Africa, Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli, CEO and President of the ONE Campaign, discusses how the organization leverages public, private, and non-profit partnerships to create opportunities of sustainable development on the continent.
Yinka Adegoke, editor of Semafor Africa, joined Into Africa to discuss the rapidly changing media landscape across the continent. While African media has a long history, dating back to the pre-independence era, it has traditionally been focused on national issues rather than Pan-African topics. As a result, many Africans rely on foreign news sources to stay informed about neighboring countries, reinforcing external narratives that often shape perceptions of the continent through a foreign lens. The rise of social media and Pan-African media outlets has increased global awareness of the reality on the continent. Beyond the media, Africa's global narrative is being reshaped through its pop culture, technology, and business sectors. This conversation highlights the transformative forces driving Africa's evolving story, offering a fresh perspective on its growing influence on the world stage.
Martin Dugard is the New York Times bestselling author known for his nonfiction works and historical thrillers, among them Taking London, Taking Paris, Taking Berlin, the Killing series with Bill O'Reilly, Into Africa, and The Explorers. Recently, I read Martin's excellent book, Taking London: Winston Churchill and the Fight to Save Civilization, and can tell you it's a riveting, well-researched tale of truly fascinating people in London during World War II, who were both extremely famous, like Churchill, Neville Chamberlain, Edward R. Murrow, and others, as well as various less well-known fighter pilots who stood in the breach when dealing with harrowing life and death challenges. A seasoned adventurer and journalist, Martin has written books and articles that have been praised for their engaging narratives and meticulous research, such as the Tour de France, ancient civilizations, and adventure sports. In addition, Martin serves on the Board of Directors of the USA Track & Field Foundation, and coaches cross country high school athletes. www.martindugard.com

Since Winston Churchill was not receiving any help from the British commander in chief to get to the front, he concocted a dangerous plan to get himself there via the Blood River.

Host Dennis Leap discusses Chapter 7, “The Blackest of All Days” in Part II, “Into Africa.” This chapter reveals that the famous British commanders over India, such as Penn Symons, believed the fight with the Boers would be easy. The journalist crew, which included Winston Churchill, was stunned when they arrived in South Africa to a sign that read “Boers Defeated, Three Battles, Penn Symons Killed.” In pages 74 and 75, we learn why Penn Symons died.

Pape Mamadou Camara, a communications specialist from Senegal, is passionate about the arts and the transformative power of hip hop as well as fighting desertification in Africa through the “Green Wall”.
Engaging with the dynamic and rapidly evolving development landscape in Africa presents a complex challenge. Historically, global powers have treated Africa as a tool for extraction and a pawn in geopolitical struggles, from colonialism to the Cold War. However, with the growth of Africa and the world shifting into a multipolar era, the U.S. finds its policies and engagement with Africa unfit for purpose, having lost touch with the realities and interests on the ground. Often referred to as the "continent of the future" due to its vast resources and rapidly growing population, a critical question the U.S. is asking is: how can the U.S. engage effectively in Africa? Former CSIS Africa Program director and Into Africa's creator, Judd Devermont, rejoins the podcast to share his insights into the U.S.'s approach to Africa and the role of America in a multipolar world. Drawing on his experience as Special Assistant to President Biden and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council, Judd offers a deep and informed perspective on these critical issues.
Host Dennis Leap continues discussing Part 2: Into Africa, Chapter 5: “Send Her Victorious.” Winston was not overly worried that he was traveling to a war in South Africa. He saw himself as a confident, well-to-do journalist being paid well to report on the early phase of the Boer War. Winston traveled in the lavish style of a British aristocrat, taking a valet with him. Even though seasick, he shows himself a politician by talking over the Boer War with General Buller, who is also on the ship. Winston's view is that the British are not serious enough to fight the Boers.
Africa's coastline is over 18,900 miles (30,500 km). With 2023 marking the 10-year anniversary of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct and the first ever African Maritime Forces Summit in Cabo Verde, the time to discuss key threats, threat management frameworks, and strategic partnerships to the African maritime space is critical. This week on Into Africa, Mvemba is joined by Rear Admiral Chase Patrick, Director of the U.S. Naval Forces Maritime Headquarters to Europe-Africa and the U.S. Sixth Fleet and Mr. Mark Schapiro, Foreign Policy Advisor of the U.S. Naval Forces to Europe-Africa. They discuss threats faced by key anchor countries for U.S. maritime security engagement such as Djibouti and the Gulf of Guinea, the amplification of multilateral maritime partnerships to combat ‘sea-blindness', economic challenges posed by maritime security, and more.
New York Times bestselling author Martin Dugard joins Tim to talk about his newest book called “Taking Berlin: The Bloody Race to Defeat the Third Reich.” It's the story of the Allies' campaign across Europe during World War II as seen through the eyes of five key figures. This book is part of the “Taking” trilogy on World War II, and follows Martin's work with Bill O'Reilly on the popular “Killing” series of books. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Taking_Berlin_auphonic.mp3 If you listen to our episode #243 from earlier this year, you'll get the story of D-Day, when the Allies invaded France during World War 2 to take back the European continent from the Nazis. The D-Day invasion happened on June 5th 1944. It was the most massive military invasion ever mounted in the history of the world. This massive operation was called Operation Overlord. The allied commander was U.S. General Dwight David Eisenhower. Their focus was on landing zones in Normandy. The Allies had planned to land on those beaches in France and then work their way through Europe to the heart of the Nazi regime, Berlin. Today, we're going to focus on that story. The story of how the Allies mounted a campaign to take back those captive nations from Hitler and win the war. This is the focus of Martin Dugard's new book called, “Taking Berlin.” It follows his initial book in the series, which was called “Taking Paris.” I asked him how he sees this series unfolding. This is the first episode of the Into Africa podcast with new host Mvemba Phezo Dizolele, who joined the CSIS Africa Program as director and senior fellow in December 2021. Mvemba speaks with author Howard French about his newest book, Born in Blackness. They discuss French's research process, the outsized role that São Tomé played in the modernity of the Western world, and how plantations—or, more accurately, prison labor camps—were the most important economic innovation of the modern age prior to the industrial revolution. French also describes the West's centuries-long attempt to strip Africans of their identity, and how Africans and the diaspora are working together along identity lines to win back their rightful place. France, 1940. In a stunning move, the armies of Nazi Germany annihilate the French military and capture Paris, the crown jewel of Europe, in a matter of a few weeks. As Adolf Hitler tightens his grip on the fabled “City of Lights,” the shocked Allies regroup and begin planning for a daring counterattack into Fortress Europe. The longer the Nazis hold the city, the greater danger its citizens face. By 1944, over 120,000 Parisians have died, and countless more tortured in the city's Gestapo prisons and sent to death camps. The exiled general Charles de Gaulle, headquartered in the bar of London's Connaught Hotel, convinces General Dwight Eisenhower to put Paris before Berlin. Unless Paris is taken immediately, he tells Ike, the City of Lights will be leveled. The race for Paris begins. TAKING PARIS: The Epic Battle for the City of Lights (Dutton Caliber), is the riveting story of the people who set that beautiful city free. Vigorously researched, Martin Dugard's historical narrative takes readers behind-the-scenes in an epic, page-turning account of the battle for the heart and soul of Paris in one of the twentieth century's darkest moments. Dugard, one of the most widely read writers today, has co-authored one of the most successful nonfiction series in publishing history with the Killing books. Now, with TAKING PARIS, Dugard showcases his unique ability to pair fascinating historical research with compelling, page-turning storytelling. The players holding the fate of Paris in their hands are some of the biggest historical figures of the era: Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, General George S. Patton, and the exiled French general Charles de Gaulle. From the fall of Paris in 1940 to the race for Paris in 1944, this enthralling drama unfolds through their decisions—for better and worse. TAKING PARIS is history told at a breathtaking pace, a sprawling yet intimate saga of heroism, desire, and personal sacrifice for all that is right. Martin Dugard is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and historian who has written on topics ranging from presidents to Egyptian pharaohs. He is coauthor of the popular Killing series along with other acclaimed works including Into Africa, The Explorers, The Murder of King Tut, and To Be a Runner. This is a special feature "presentation" but really can be considered part 3 of Alvin Smith's episodes (Make sure you listen to the first two. Did somebody say Trilogy!?). This episode is dedicated to his charity organization, Into-Africa, and the goal is that you would listen and realize you can change. Things in your life can change. Your LIFE can be BETTER if you are willing to think differently and put in the necessary work. Know Better. Do Better. Be Better. You'll hear a few audio clips we've taken (with permission) to help you understand what Winning Minds and Into-Africa are all about. Another reason for this being “special feature' is because we've recorded a song for Into-Africa. The “featured” song features Atlanta, Georgia resident Chetan Benson – an amazing voice, but more and most importantly a husband and father. So…here it goes! The goal of Winning Minds is to challenge the way we think, and to offer perhaps a new way of thinking which leads to better living. One of the key people who led me to start this podcast, although indirectly, was Alvin Smith. He was raised in Athens, GA and now is an associate pastor of Door Church in Tucson, AZ and is the Founder and Director of Into-Africa ministries. We’re going to take a closer look at Russian private military contractors. How much do we understand about what these groups are up to? And how much should the U.S. and its allies be concerned? It’s a phenomenon with a history; and it’s something that doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. In this episode of Into Africa, host Judd Devermont (CSIS), Ayisha Osori (Open Society Initiative for West Africa), Alex Noyes (RAND Corporation), and Ambassador Mark Bellamy (CSIS) review the state of term limits in Africa and why some may view their leadership as indispensable. The experts also review Nigeria’s new cabinet of ministers and the deteriorating economic conditions in Zimbabwe. (Note: The CSIS Africa Program has partnered with Open Society Foundations and has a pending project proposal with OSIWA. Our show this week begins with the elections in Benin, peacekeeping in Liberia, elections in South Africa and Malawi, and the Caster Semenya gender and racing saga. We also share an update on Ugandan musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine. This week’s in-depth conversation is really special: it features a mashup of four podcasts: Ufahamu Africa, On Africa, Into Africa, and African Tech Roundup. The hosts of all four shows come together to talk about a few things, including why we launched our respective shows. In addition to Ufahamu Africa's hosts Kim Yi Dionne and Rachel Beatty Riedl, you'll hear Travis Adkins (@TravisLAdkins), adjunct professor at Georgetown University in African Studies and Security Studies and the host of On Africa; Judd Devermont (@JDevermont), the director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and host of Into Africa, and Andile Masuku (@MasukuAndile), a Zimbabwean broadcaster and entrepreneur based in Johannesburg, South Africa and host of African Tech Roundup. Demographic, technological, and geostrategic developments are disrupting the electoral landscape in sub-Saharan Africa. How do these shifts affect the political climate for democracy and participation across Africa? What have recent elections in Nigeria illustrated about these? And what about the clash between China and the United States in Africa? To explore these questions, David Priess spoke with Judd Devermont, director of the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, host of the Into Africa podcast, and former national intelligence officer for Africa from 2015 to 2018.
From July 1966 to January 1970, Nigerians fought a civil war which led to the deaths of more than half a million people. Looking back at the American attempts to understand what was happening offers an opportunity to assess how intelligence analysts responded to a foreign policy challenge. In this episode we talk with Judd Devermont about the American intelligence community's biases in its analysis of the Nigerian Civil War and its influence on American policy. Devermont is the director of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He has worked at the CIA, National Security Council, and in the office of the Director of National Intelligence. His article “The US intelligence community's biases during the Nigerian civil war” was published in African Affairs. Devermont is the host of the podcast “Into Africa.” The Strategy Bridge is a non-profit organization focused on the development of people in strategy, national security, & military affairs. "Into Africa and Hybrid Humans" Today we sit down with Bruce R. Fenton author of "The Forgotten Exodus: The Into Africa Theory of Human Evolution" and Coauthor of "Hybrid Humans" with his wife Daniella Fenton who has a psychic and shamanic background. We will discuss the mounds of evidence he has compiled for his theory that modern Homo Sapiens actually originated in Australia and used the Sundaland land bridge connecting Australia to Southeast Asia before the Younger Dryas Era Floods covered the land bridge. We will also discuss his more recent book he wrote with his wife Daniella Fenton about how we are byproducts of Ancient Alien biological engineering of themselves and Homo Sapiens based in again no coincidence Australia. We end on a little section where we discuss the intentions of recent Aliens and UFO researchers such as Tom Delonge, Dr. Steven Greer, and others. *If you enjoy our podcast and want to help us grow, check out our Patreon account and enjoy the exclusive material not heard anywhere else. https://www.patreon.com/MikeandMaurice MikeandMauriceMindEscape.com
Based on his research, author Bruce Fenton shares his theory that Homo Sapians evolved out of Australia, and not out of Africa in the way we have been taught to believe. ARR RAW Round Table Discussion with Travellers Featuring Grant Johnson, Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Sam Manicom, Graham Field and Jim Martin. Basic Mechanical Knowledge For Motorcycle Travel: What is the absolute minimum mechanical knowledge you should have before undertaking an extended trip? And what things should you be checking regularly to prevent or foresee possible breakdowns? Choosing a Travel Mate: How to figure out if you’re compatible? Do you do a short run/overnight first or? How do you handle it when on the road for a time, you decide it isn’t working and you want to go it alone? Especially if you’re in a far off place? ARR RAW Listeners Questions Answered: James Gale: How stinky is too stinky? I'm interested to know what the esteemed RAW panel smell like. (No, my curiosity is not born of a fetish. It's purely practical and social). When you're going on a long journey what do you do about clean clothes? How many changes of clothes are reasonable given the lack of a chest-of-drawers and limited cupboard space on a bike? Do you plan to stop in towns and use a laundromat or motel facility? Do you take some soap and wash your clothes in a river? Or do you keep riding until the police arrest you for excessive air pollution? Noel Bowerman: What place did you find confronting? How did you come to terms with it? Gary Turner: What do you do when you have free time on the trip? I.E. reading, sleep, laundry, drinking? **If you have a question for the RAW panel, send it to us by filling out the form at https://www.adventureriderradio.com/rawquestion/. ARR RAW Listeners Questions Answered: Scott McQueen: What are costs like on RTW trips? How do you not run out of money? Mike Jacobson: Can Graham recommend some useful hair products for dry hair I can use in the coming Australian summer? ;) Serious question this time: charging technology on a motorcycle. Phones are relatively easy to charge on a bike if you've fitted a USB port - but laptops and some cameras' need different voltages than the 5V USB supplies or the 12V a cigarette style socket or simple connector powered from the bikes' system will give you . Do you invest in specialized chargers that will run on a 12V power supply or cross your fingers and hope to be able to plug into a 120V/240V mains power socket when the need arises? Also, how much equipment can you actually charge on your bike before you start stressing the bikes' electrics? TJ Lyons: How do you lock up your motorcycle when traveling? Do you use a chain or heavy duty cable or nothing? I have heard all of you mention so many great tips, but I do not recall anyone every mentioning if they do anything to secure their bike at night. Alex Druien: How do you get started in a quest around the world? **If you have a question for the RAW panel, send it to us by filling out the form at https://www.adventureriderradio.com/rawquestion/. Paul Crowder: My question would be what's the best continent to tour in terms of ease versus experience for a traveller with time constraints? ARR RAW Round Table Discussions With Travellers On this months RAW, at the round table we discuss travelling in poverty stricken areas, how we make our dreams of motorcycle travel come true, being an adventure addict and dealing with wanderlust. Travel in Poverty Stricken Areas: When we are travelling we often spend a lot of time in areas where people are poverty stricken or suffering in general because they have so little. How do you deal with that? Dreams are where adventures begin: Why do you think you actually managed to do your big trip when statistically most dreamt about don’t end up happening? Adventure Addict: Do you think that after a time you become an adventure addict? As in, you know what the possibilities are, that you can make dreams come alive and therefore, want more. If you do become one, is there anything wrong with that? Living with wanderlust: For example, you wander for a period of time, go back home and soon find yourself itching to go again, so you pick up and go again. Obviously some people will think it’s really cool and incredible what you’re doing, and others will think that you’re a little off your nut. How do we deal with society’s expectations of us (what society considers “normal”) and maintain our wanderlust? Making sure you have what you need to cover all expenses plus any unexpected ones is really important, particularly when in foreign countries. Of course, you need to figure out a budget before you go, so we've got together and discussed what you can expect and what you should plan on. •fuel •food •visas, special permits, overstaying visa •accommodations •repairs •carnets •medical insurance •bike insurance •shipping •vaccinations (sam) •bike consumables such as tyres •medical needs (not covered by insurance) •city accommodations and transport costs when dealing with getting bike out of port •emergency money •and more... Thanks again to Sam Manicom, for this link to an informative site: www.mytravelcost.com www.mytravelcost.com/petrol-prices/ What about dollar per day? Here is what HU says… To plan your budget, here's some rough guidelines: "First-tier" countries such as northern Europe, US$60-80 a day and up per person. "Second-tier" countries such as the rest of Europe, Canada and the USA, US$40-60 a day per person. "Third-tier" countries, such as Latin America, US$30 a day is considered enough for the average budget traveller, not counting major items like shipping the bike - or yourself, and repairs and servicing. "Fourth-tier" countries, parts of Africa and Asia, can be done for less, many for less than US$20 day, especially in Asia. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Africa. It could be seen as the great test of the West; economically, intellectually, spiritually. The "dark continent" was seen as a source of power for the West through its natural resources, a place of harvest for western religious missionaries, a prize area for anthropologists - a dark continent to be illuminated by our western lights. Now, darker, all but extinguished some think, by the attentions of its invaders, Africa is outside the take-up of the twentieth century it seems. But is this received view is merely clichéd and too easily pessimistic. With Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr, Chair of the Afro-American Studies Department, Harvard University and presenter of the BBC 2 series Into Africa; Anthony Sampson, writer, journalist and author of Mandela: The Authorised Biography.
