Chris and Taylor review the biographical sports drama film Ferrari written by Troy Kennedy Martin and directed by Michael Mann. Based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine by Brock Yates, the film follows the personal and professional struggles of Enzo Ferrari, the Italian founder of the car manufacturer Ferrari S.p.A., during the summer of 1957 as Scuderia Ferrari prepares to compete in the 1957 Mille Miglia. The film stars Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O'Connell, and Patrick Dempsey.Follow us on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thepotentialpodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thepotentialpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/thepotentialpodSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/thepotentialpodcastThanks to our sponsor: Let's Get CheckedGet 25% off your health test at trylgc.com/potential and enter promo code POTENTIAL25 ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
In 1933, FIVE racers got together to fix the Tripoli Grand Prix, an African race run with a lottery system that would award three lucky fans with millions of dollars if their driver won the race. Those drivers selected one man to win the race and scoop up the prize money to be shared amongst the group in a ridiculous race that saw one uninvolved driver die so that the conspirators could make millions. Except… none of that actually happened. Today on "Deadly Passions, Terrible Joys," we're setting the record straight and breaking down an almost century-old myth. Michael Mann's latest feature FERRARI, which he both directed and produced, starring Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz and Shailene Woodley, tells the story of the iconic Enzo Ferrari. Based on Brock Yates' 1991 book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, The Car, The Races, The Machine, with a screenplay by Troy Kennedy Martin, Mann's FERRARI is a character study and unlike anything else the director has done on the big screen. The film made its world premiere at the 2023 Venice Film Festival followed by a theatrical release at Christmas. Our FilmWeek critics reviewed the film last week.
Brock Yates joins the Niche Pursuits podcast to share his journey of acquiring and growing the website AllTurtles.com. He acquired the site on Flippa in 2012 for $3,000. At purchase, the site was a forum with 80,000 pages with thin content about specific turtle species, generating $60 per month. This all presented a whole new world for him, as he had zero prior SEO and site-building experience. Fast forward to today and AllTurtles peaks at 150-180,000 page views per month, earning mid-five figures a year. Brock attributes much of the site's success to its history, branding, well-rounded content, and some link juice from a large brand's fun little PR confusion he describes. He's largely taken a hands-off approach to content production but still manages to produce quality content. Which he emphasizes is the result of hiring good researchers if you can't access subject matter experts. It's interesting to hear about his mostly outsourced content creation model and his strategy for hiring writers through Upwork. And its especially interesting to hear how affordable his writing team is, which has stuck with him over a long term. He also shares insights on content monetization strategy, primarily relying on Mediavine and Amazon Associates, with a 90-10 split in revenue. And Brock highlights how he maximizes ad revenue through content structure and layout, highlighting the importance of ad impressions and reader experience. He finishes things off with his plans for maintaining the site's stability and growth, including potential future strategies such as video content, email list building, and improving reader engagement. Tap into eons of knowledge and experiences, condensed into digestible portions. Highly, highly recommend. “Uniquely outstanding. No fluff and all substance. Fifty years ago, automotive journalist Brock Yates and Car and Driver editor Steve Smith conceived the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, a timed race from East Coast to West Coast of America. The first “Cannonball Run” from New York City to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, California, was covered in a widely-read article, and the race was run four more times throughout the ‘70s. By the end of the decade, a movie was in the works, to be written by Yates and helmed by stuntdriver-turned-director Hal Needham. Two 1976 films - Cannonball and The Gumball Rally - beat Yates' and Needham's film to the screen, but their 1981 film - which boasted Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Farrah Fawcett leading a stacked cast - became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year and remains an enduring classic. Now, forty years later, we're putting pedal to metal and checking out The Cannonball Run! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. There you are, a fourteen-year old kid, sitting at home. Then one day your father walks into the room and asks you if want to take a little ride across the continental United States with some of his buddies in a late 1970s Dodge van. For most kids, a ride like this might have consisted of stopping here and there to see the sights and then maybe, visit some relatives. If, however your name began with Brock and ended with Yates, then that train of thought is about as far from reality as you’d expect. Brock Yates Jr. grew up with the Cannonball Run, that famed cross country event that later became what is known as today as, The One Lap of America. His father, famed automotive journalist, racer and script writer Brock Yates, created the Cannonball Run and thus, it was no surprise that his son somewhat followed in his footsteps. As the Chief Comandante of The One Lap of America and an instructor for DrivingDyamics.com, a leader in driver training and safety, Brock has forgotten more about driving then most of us will ever know. He’s also an amazing story teller and one hell of a good human being. Thus, it was a no-brainer for us to have him as a guest on this week’s Hemmings Hot Rod BBQ. We also pull a wicked 1972 DeTomaso Pantera from our classifieds as we felt it would be a fitting entry for upcoming 2021 One Lap of America. https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/chevrolet/g10/2345252.html

Carl Reese - Endurance Rider & Record Setter You’ve probably heard of the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. In 1933 Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker drove from New York City to Los Angeles in a Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak 8 in 53.5 hours. No one broke that record for 40 years. Car and Driver writer Brock Yates and editor Steve Smith organized the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which took place 5 times between 1971 and 1979. It was an illegal road race from coast to coast to celebrate the United States Interstate Highway System and to protest strict traffic laws which were coming in to effect at that time. The first run was not a competitive race, as there was only one team running in a 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van. But by the time they were running the last race it was known as a wild race. They ran everything from Ferraris to pick-up trucks. It was mostly a secret event, with few witnesses. As more and more people have tried to rush to break Cannonball Baker’s time, the route has become established and is commonly referred to as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. Carl Reese is a contractor from California, and in his spare time he’s an endurance rider that has set seven world records in less than a year. One being the solo motorcycle “Cannonball” from Los Angeles to New York. Carl Reese set out to break the motorcycle record previously set by George Egloff in 1983, who completed the cross country run in 42 hours. Carl broke the record completing the run in 38 hours and 49 minutes. He’s now working on a documentary that highlights the history of transcontinental driving records. www.carlreese.net Best Tips for Extended Motorcycle Travel from the Experts We’ve consulted with some skilled and knowledgeable riders, one being a Professor at Kent University who has studied rider fatigue on what advice they would have for the average rider who wants to do some extended riding on their motorcycle. Ridiculous. Hilarious. Outlandish. Real. The Cannonball Run wasn't the first movie about the legendary illegal cross-country race, but it was the most iconic. Penned by Car and Driver editor Brock Yates and helmed by Stunt Driver/Smokey and the Bandit director Hal Needham, The Cannonball Run is one of the happiest accidents in movie history. James and Sid are joined by comedian Derek Williams to discuss this 1981 ensemble masterpiece that probably should have been terrible. Filmed in only a few weeks with an cast that was basically a bunch of Burt Reynolds' friends hanging out and being drunk, Needham somehow captured lightning in a bottle and set the course for 1980's pop culture. What was the goal of this movie? What exactly was Roger Moore doing here? How did Derek learn to drive a manual? Enjoy the latest Reels and Wheels! Subscribe on Stitcher or iTunes and leave feedback!
