A decade ago, Rolling Stone magazine called 1984 “Pop's Greatest Year.” A bold statement…but a lot of critics agree. A confluence of factors—the comeback of dance music, the peak of MTV, the Second British Invasion, and the emergence of metal and hip-hop—made the radio a great place to be. It was a year of fearless genre crossover…cinematic hits…veterans reinventing themselves…ballads that became standards…a newcomer named Madonna…and a movie star who called himself The Kid and made doves cry. Join Chris Molanphy as he dissects eight reasons why 1984 was awesome for pop fans and walks through all 20 of the year's No. 1 hits: from “Jump” to “Hello,” “Karma Chameleon” to “Caribbean Queen,” “Let's Go Crazy” to “Like a Virgin.” This is what it sounds like when pop's fly. Hello ya little bananas! On episode 113 of HINKY, Carrie and Sara had a big ol' Tuesday night at the Cheesecake Factory! We recap Carrie's first trip to the Lexington location, even though it's been here for 10ish years. Don't worry - Sara tried a bunch of local restaurants to balance out all the corporate cheesecake. We talked about our go-to Starbucks drinks, and we have another SnackCrate box (thanks to Sara for not canceling this month's subscription!). We round out the episode with a new Coke drink and Carrie's HINKY History Lesson on a very pertinent treat to the episode. What else do we get into? This week, in the second in a special series on matrescence, Gilly is talking about morning telly, cook hacks and motherhood with TV chef, Shivi Ramoutar.Shivi is the Caribbean Queen of Morning TV. She's the chef on Oti Mabuse's Breakfast Show, she was the TV Chef on Garraway's Good Stuff and cooked with the Kemps on Martin and Roman's Weekend Best. She's a regular guest on BBC's Saturday Kitchen, and ITV's This Morning and has even appeared on Celebrity Mastermind. Her latest book Cook Clever is packed with cook hacks for her massive audience. And as a mother to 7 and 4-year-olds and a 9 month baby, she has plenty to say about matrescence. As we aim to explode the word into the national conversation to describe the process of mothering that really never stops, she tell us how's she's getting on. It's estimated that perinatal mental health problems alone cost the NHS and social services around £1.2 billion annually, and Shivi is only too ready to share her journey so far. It's National Sandwich Day, and there are lots of great ones out there. The worst sandwich has a pretty clear champion - the Raines sandwich. Though to be fair, it wasn't ever really intended to be eaten. Plus: back in 1984, the number one song on the Billboard pop chart was “Caribbean Queen” by Billy Ocean. He actually recorded different versions of the song featuring queens from different parts of the world to have hits everywhere. Yolanda Franklin, who has worked in the banking industry for 20+ years, is a phenomenal self-taught artist. At 52 years of age, Yolanda is ever-evolving her talent as a fiber glass and abstract artist. She first began to develop her appreciation for the arts by observing her mother, who was very talented in sewing, knitting and crocheting. Yolanda also credits her mother for encouraging her draw and create from her heart. Yolanda’s husband has also been a big influencer on her trajectory as an artist. As a self-employed IT Specialist, Yolanda’s husband created the website yoyoartvine.com and yoyoartbiz.com showcasing her work, and he has even been instrumental in naming some of her art pieces. Yolanda also credits the artist Penelope Brown, who is also a fellow church member for pushing her. Yolanda shadowed Penelope at a variety of art fairs and gallery showings. This played a key role in jumpstarting her wanting to really buckle down and create and develop her artwork. The Embrace Collection (of which the host Robin Tillotson owns one of the paintings from that series) was first created 16 years ago, and this collection represents the first time Yolanda exhibited her work in a major venue at The Chicago Department on Aging. When Yolanda was inspired by Eric Lee, a glass artist, who also creates artistically with furniture, and after being blown away by his glass work, Yolanda consciously decided to take on that medium. She eventually moved to working with Plexiglass and Voila – the Embrace Collection was born! Eight years ago, Yolanda was juried in at the annual Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago) annual art exhibit, and in 2015 she won 3rd prize. She has subsequently exhibited at this prestigious art event for eight consecutive years. That opportunity served as the conduit for being able to showcase her work at The DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago. Additionally, she has won a number of ribbons and other accolades where she has exhibited. When asked what role does Spirituality and God play in her work, Yolanda responded simply by saying “He’s everything, and the reason behind my passion and gift.” Yolanda’s current tour de force is a piece that she is working on entitled “Caribbean Queen.” This piece exemplifies her love for texture and learning to love figurative work, and Black culture really shines through this piece. Yolanda’s future plans include participating in art fairs and to land some gallery showings. She also has a growing Paint and Sip Business where she trains groups. Yolanda’s work can be found on yoyoartbiz.com;for her burgeoning Paint and Sip sessions, you can email her at yoyoartvine.com She is also on Facebook and Instagram as Yolanda Franklin.

How that drive also lead him to some other avenues within the music industry from tour managing for bands like Bring Me the Horizon and how that skill has allowed his band to save some money on the road and a bit about his love of weight lifting and how he tries to maintain that while on the road. He has collected a pile of Gold and Platinum records across the world and hit the number one spot worldwide on pop charts including the USA, Australia, Germany, Holland, and the UK. Billy has achieved extraordinary success as both an artist and a songwriter Born in Trinidad, Billy settled in London’s East End when just seven years old. The calypso crazy kid soon got turned on to soul singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, as well as pop groups like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, leading him to spend much of his study time in the music room. Billy got his first break when he signed to GTO records, for whom his second single was the Motown-ish Love Really Hurts Without You, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts and No. 12 in the US. Two top twenty singles followed; Love on Delivery and Stop Me, then Red Light Spells Danger became a smash in both the UK and the US. Billy changed record labels and his move to Jive Records provided instant success, with the million selling American number one single Caribbean Queen (for which Billy won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal), followed by Loverboy, and Suddenly, which became the first of Billy’s killer ballads. The Album from which these singles came from spent a year in the US Charts selling double platinum (triple in Canada). Billy also performed on the American half of Live Aid, making 1985 a truly incredible year for him. 1986 wasn’t bad either, opening with When the Going gets Tough (the tough gets going), the theme song to the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner/Danny Devito movie Jewel of the Nile. Billy then launched the Love Zone album, which went straight to No. 2 in the UK charts, staying in the top 40 for six months. In the US, there was a No. 1 single with There’ll be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry). More Hits were to follow with the now classic Get Outta My Dreams; Get Into My Car, giving Billy yet another US No. 1 hit. More hits followed as Billy also proved himself to be one of the most hardworking artists on the live stage, touring the world to ever-growing enthusiastic audiences. After huge worldwide success and with a young family at home, Billy decided to take a break to spend some well earned time with them. In 2007, with the kids all grown up, Billy went back out to perform his hits again, this time with his daughter Cherie on backing vocals, with live dates in the UK and Europe, USA, Canada, and the Caribbean. The tour was a great success and culminated in his getting the bug once more for writing and recording. 2008 saw Billy back in the studio for the first time in 15 years, recording his brand new album ‘Because I Love You’ - which was released in 2009. 2010 saw Billy back on the road again with his band in the UK, Europe and the US and the release of ‘The Very Best of Billy Ocean’, which entered the UK album charts at number 17 and sold 72,000 copies in 4 weeks. Billy recently headed over to America where he played to fantastic crowds in Las Vegas, Detroit and Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida. Billy has recently headed back into the studio with old collaborator Barry Eastmond to record a new album due to be released later this year and will be playing more live dates round the globe.
More Happy Pills....Follow up of previous Happy Pill. Proviso: Been sitting on this Intro for a while, thought it fitted the Happy Pill Theme.. By no means am I NOT taking mental health as a serious issue. It simply is! Directly or indirectly, we all have had some experience of how tragic, debilitating or simply sad, mental health issues are. This being clarified, we still can have a little smile about it. Except for the intro (it’s been a long time I have used a little intro sample due to wife’s constant disapproval J), this set is a direct cut from a set I play a fortnight ago for a few friends on our deck. Another dose of Soulful, happy house tunes to wrap up the Australian summer. I handpicked the tunes, most of them are very current and my favourites producers are there. It also marks the time where I have to distance myself from Soulful House and revisit a more progressive, darker, more challenging musical landscape. I should re-upload next week, therefore stay tuned. Playlist: Intro MH Hotline 2014 The Truth (Original). U-Ness, Jed Sed & Samson Lewis 2013 Everybody Wants Something (Joey Negro Strip Mix). Kings Of Soul 2011 Sing It Back (Michael Kaye Club). Reunited Highlights: This section will not be as exhaustive as usual but please do pay special attention to the following tunes. “Truth” from my current favourite House Producers and Label U-Ness, Jed Set on Soulheat records.. Their Miami 2014 sampler compilation is out, run on Traxsource and buy it. Joey Negro’s Everybody Wantts Something.. Classic Joey’s Happy tune, easy listening. Two tunes featuring the immensely talented vocalist Andrea Love.. “Running to Love”, which if it weren’t for my connection to U-Ness would have headlined the set and “More Love”. Richard Earnshaw, Maurice Joshua, Mike Dunn and Steven Stone: make no mistake, this is current Soulful House royalty!!! OtherSoul’s Little Bootleg « La La La ».. When I played it, I noticed an eleven year old girl grooving to it, realizing that I may not have known the tune but she certainly did. I have been using a lot of OtherSoul’s Soundcloud remixes lately. Two talented producers from Spain, check them out. The Shane D remix of “Caribbean Queen”. Notwithstanding the initial reaction of people close to me, of the “oh come on, not this” sort, I can share one thing with you: they were ALL humming it… As for “Sing It Back”.. well it is… “Sing It back” and for the purpose of More Happy Pills. I will never grow tired of it.. Also it was a throwback of my NYD set (still struggling to decide whether worth the upload), which ended with a mega Xtian Edit of this very tune.. Hope you got the full dose of More Happy Pill, for the next one will be less sweet... Enjoy, à très bientôt! Xtian
