It's been the first week of the women's cricket season and it has not disappointed. There were wins last weekend for defending champions, Northern Diamonds, The Blaze registered their first win as a new team, the South East Stars thrashed Thunder and Sunrisers FINALLY register their first RHFT win...the Andy Tennant Era is well and truly underway! There were 5fers for Abtaha Maqsood & Lucy Higham while South East Stars debutant, Paige Scholfield scored 111* at Old Trafford. There's been mixed availability of England players which is certainly a talking point. Irish all-rounder, Orla Prendergast, has signed for the Western Storm which is very exciting for cricket over here. In other news, the WBBL has announced a new draft system with tier system for overseas signings, following the model in the BBL...plenty to discuss. With over 300 games and 10,000 runs to her name, Charlotte Edwards led England to a World Cup double and Ashes win, all in 2009. She truly is a legend of the game - what she's doing talking to us we don't know, but we absolutely loved talking to her! We chatted to current Southern Vipers Head Coach Charlotte just after training at the Ageas Bowl one night in early January. We'd tapped up #friendsoftheshow Charlotte Taylor and Emily Windsor for gossip, and we did get one cheeky nugget to ask, but the truth is there was precious little dirt - Charlotte is a keeper! We chat about training through COVID, starting her England career wearing culottes, playing in boys and mens teams growing up - and getting more abuse from their parents than the players themselves. We also discuss the future of women's cricket and how it looks bright given the introduction of professional contracts for domestic players in 2020. We even talk about the gut-wrenching moment Charlotte was axed from the England squad, 12 months before a home world cup in 2017, a competition her ex-team mates would go on to win. Sally Armstrong has been to some of the most dangerous places to speak with, learn about and report on women and girls in conflict zones. Countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia have been her beat for decades, and yet she has always found her way to the heart of the human story. An award-winning journalist, author and human rights activist, Sally joins Ben for a timely conversation about the ascent of women everywhere, and why we need to do more to make the world a better, more equal place. Read the blog post about this episode. About the Guest Sally Armstrong is sometimes called “the war correspondent for the world’s women.” She’s also known as “La Talibanista”. Sally has covered stories in zones of conflict all over the world. From Bosnia and Somalia to Congo and Afghanistan, her eyewitness reports have earned her the Amnesty International Media Award four times over, as well as acclaim all over the world. Armstrong shares her experiences reporting from the front lines and imparts her audiences with the lessons she’s learned from the battlefields surrounding the complexities of “human rights” versus “human wrongs.” In addition to her journalism, Armstrong is the author of the books Veiled Threat: The Hidden Power of the Women of Afghanistan; The Nine Lives of Charlotte Taylor; Bitter Roots, Tender Shoots: The Uncertain Fate of Afghanistan’s Women; and her most recent title, Ascent of Women: A New Age is Dawning for Every Mother’s Daughter. 2017 was a busy year for Armstrong — it saw her on assignments in Iraq, Kenya, and Afghanistan, and she gave a speech in Oxford, UK, and at Oxford University. Also in 2017, Armstrong was promoted to Officer of the Order of Canada, and won, along with photographer/videographer Peter Bregg, the Amnesty International Canada Media Award for their work in Iraq (her fourth Amnesty International Canada Media Award). She and Bregg also won the Gold Award for Investigative Journalism at The Canadian Online Publishing Gala for their work about the Yazidis called Resisting Genocide in 2017. Armstrong is a former member of the International Women’s Commission at the UN, and is the recipient of ten honorary doctorate degrees. Charlotte is a powerhouse of a singer as well as quite the entertainer. Backing her in the studio that night was Memphis Deep. This trio is quite the machine. When I first met Sally Armstrong I knew instantly that my life would never be the same. When she spoke, my perspectives were challenged and my worldview shifted. What I thought I knew about women, men, culture and world religion went out the window and I realized how the power of a voice can change the world. My producer was almost in tears when the show was over because he had never heard about some of the things we talked about and others he thought were no longer in practice. From Bosnia and Somalia to the Middle East, Rwanda, Congo and Afghanistan, her eye witness reports have earned her awards including the Gold Award from the National Magazine Awards Foundation and the Author's Award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Letters. She received the Amnesty International Media Award in 2000, 2002 and again in 2011. She was a member of the International Women’s Commission a UN body that consists of 20 Palestinian women, 20 Israeli women and 12 internationals whose mandate is assisting with the path to peace in the Middle East. In 1996, Sally was honoured by the YWCA of Toronto with the prestigious Women of Distinction Award in Communications. In 1997 she received the Achievement Award for Human Rights for Women from Jewish Women International; in 1998 Media Watch's Dodi Robb Award and in 2003, the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement from the National Magazine Awards Foundation.  In 2005, she received the Athena International Award (Chicago), the World of Difference Award from the International Alliance for Women (Florida) and the Red Cross Humanitarian Award - New Brunswick Region. In 2008 she received the Clarkson Laureate for public service at Massey College, University of Toronto. And in May 2008, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Journalism Foundation. In March 2010, she became the fourth recipient of The Calgary Peace Prize. She is the recipient of eight honorary doctorate degrees and is a Member of the Order of Canada. Her book Veiled Threat: The Hidden Power of the Women of Afghanistan was published by Penguin Books in 2002. You might recognize Sandra Dee Robinson from her roles in daytime television: starting with her very first television role as young Amanda Cory on the long-running soap opera, Another World, which she played for a total of  9 years.  Sandra remains a familiar face in daytime with other major roles on Sunset Beach, Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital and Days of Our Lives, as Dr. Charlotte Taylor.  Currently, Sandra plays Christine, another slightly obsessive psychotherapist on the web series, The Bay. Sandra also appears as a guest star on shows like Secret Life of an American Teenager, Two and  Half Men, and Criminal Minds among others. Sounds glamorous right?
