This is Lone Star House of Design, a podcast about all things design and architecture form the Great State of Texas with a panel conversation featuring some of the biggest names in American design today, and all from Texas. The following conversation is part of the Wellness and Design Leadership Series presented by ThermaSol and you are not going to want to miss a moment of this one featuring a panel of design icons, all from Texas. This is a conversation with Kyle Bunting & friends.I met Kyle Bunting through my friend and amazing publicist, Andrew Joseph. He reintroduced me to Kyle with whom my last contact was not direct but through designer Christopher Kennedy who designed my Small Space, Big Style design house which featured a stunning Kyle Bunting rug. Kyle Bunting is producing some of the most stunning rugs in the world, all from his studio in Austin, Texas. The work is groundbreaking and has turned the Hyde rug, the original luxury item into an art form, unrivaled and completely original. After my conversation with Kyle, he said, “let’s do something really cool” and invited three incredible guests to join for a group chat about the state of design in Texas. This group included; Fern Santini - Santini’s work is completely original, it’s bold and refined with a wild streak that is unmistakeable and wonderful. Fern’s use of furniture, color and materials blends design into a hand crafted sculpture of space, materials and light. Lauren Rottet - Rottet is the complete designer. Architect, interior designer, furniture designer and art curator. Founding principal and president of Rottet Studio. I could list her accolades, but there would be no time left for the conversation.Jan Showers - Showers is another world-class designer from Texas, and I don’t use this term lightly, at all. Her work is elegant, unique and layered, like an Impasto at times, glazing others. Her spaces art artfully placed and painted to create a multi-dimensional environment. That, to me has always been the true essence of design. Some idea came up during our conversation that bears repeating here. Texas design is very different by geography. Austin is funky and weird, yet still a college town and state capitol. The spirit of Austin is strong and diverse base on the the influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kinky Friedman, Michael Dell, Tito Beveridge combined with some of the most interesting architecture you can find around the state capitol and the University of Texas campus. It’s still a relatively small city but it doesn’t feel that way. The addition of a technology hub to the already vibrant music scene and South By South West, Austin is poised for even greater heights but at what price? The traffic, cost of living, loss of architecturally significant structures to make way for more livable space? Yeah, that’s probably coming. Having spent 9 years living in Dallas, I can tell you that this city is rich in arts and cultural experiences. If you ask many outside of Texas, they will tell you about Tom Landry, J.R Ewing and Roger Staubach. Sure, Dallas is a world-class sports town, I get it. But the arts and culture scene in Dallas goes far beyond what you hear about Dallas on ESPN. The City Hall building in Dallas, designed by I.M Pei and Theodore J. Musho is a brutalist statement piece. Pei also designed the Meyerson Symphony Center and with that, added a simply exquisite and acoustic masterpiece to the “Metroplex”. Fair Park, home of the State Fair of Texas is an Art Deco oasis crafted by architect, George Dahl. There is far more to explore, and I encourage you to do just that! So what about Houston? Oil energy money, right? Sure. There is a significant link between oil barons and the arts, it’s true. Try to find an American city that was built on energy money that does not hav significant art, architecture and design. Houston is no different. The city has incredible art installations, a museum district, architectural representations of almost any era you...

A "food desert" is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food, and the designation considers both the type and quality of food available, as well as the accessibility of the food through the size and proximity of the food stores. In 2010, the United States Department of Agriculture reported that 23.5 million people in the U.S. lived in food deserts, meaning that they live more than one mile from a supermarket in urban or suburban areas and more than 10 miles from a supermarket in rural areas. Food deserts tend to be inhabited by lower-income residents with reduced mobility, making them a less attractive market for large supermarket chains and available foods are often of the highly processed type, high in sugars and fats, which are known contributors to the proliferation of obesity and other chronic diseases. It's estimated that the contribution of food deserts to healthcare costs in the U.S. is over $70 billion annually. Top Box Foods is a non-profit, community-based, social business, with an innovative model of getting healthy and affordable grocery boxes to food-insecure neighborhoods, creating year round access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins, in communities in Chicago, and Lake County, IL, as well as in New Orleans, LA. Mr. Christopher Kennedy, along with his wife Sheila Kennedy, is a co-founder of Top Box Foods. In addition to Top Box Foods, Mr. Kennedy is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises, Inc., treasurer of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation, serves on the public boards of Interface, Inc., and Knoll Inc., and is a trustee for the Marine Biological Laboratory at University of Chicago. Mr. Kennedy earned his BA from Boston College and his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, where he serves on their Global Advisory Board. Mr. Kennedy has also served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Illinois, and president of Merchandise Mart Properties, a commercial property management firm based in Chicago. Design houses are one of the elements unique to interior design and architecture. It’s like our version of the runway show in fashion, or the car show in the auto industry. Christopher Kennedy has become quite adept at ideating the design house and executing them. Christopher is a regular fixture in Palm Springs during Modernism Week and you have heard about some of those here on the podcast and even seen some of the interviews on our YouTube channel. As a side note, before I started the podcast, I produced a design house in Hollywood I called Small Space, Big Style and Christopher was a featured designer on the project. He masterfully designed a 70’s inspired living room and was an absolute pleasure to work with. So when I heard that Christopher was creating a design house in Central California, I really wanted to cover it for you. I had another idea at the time, I wanted to assign this project to someone who could cover its from a designer’s perspective so I reached out good friend, previous guest and fabulous design talent, Nancy Russert of Les Beaux and Twist Custom to go and see this project. She did, and in the process, created what is really a travel journal to the Central California Valley City of Turlock, definitely NOT a hotbed of design to see this project. The story behind RETURN TO MOUNT KENNEDY begins and ends with Bobby Kennedy becoming the first human to stand atop a lonely peak in the Canadian Yukon that had just been named to honor his assassinated brother, JFK. His climbing guide was Jim Whittaker, a mountain icon who at 28 had become the first American to summit Mt. Everest. From that solemn trek, Jim—the shy outdoorsman and eventual CEO of REI—and RFK ignited a friendship over their shared love of wilderness. In the following years their lives would intertwine, both men having a profound effect on the other. But their shared path would end with an assassin’s bullet. In June of 1968, Jim would look on as Bobby was taken off life support. 50 years later, Jim’s son Bobby Whittaker— a legend of the grunge scene— decides that he and his brother Leif must ascend the mountain. Leif, the experienced alpinist, will guide Bobby, as they test their relationship on dangerous ground. When they are joined by RFK’s son Christopher Kennedy their trio is complete. Mt. Kennedy’s long shadow has loomed in all of their lives for decades. Now, half a century after their fathers’ climb, three sons will forge their own paths and find a vantage point above the shadows. Like their fathers before them, the trio bring out the best in each other. Confronting deeply emotional memories from a tumultuous era of American history, Bobby, Chris, and Leif finally understand why they were so driven to go there and why they must continue to do good in the world. Director Eric Becker joins us to talk about the deeply personal story of a family and the unlikely bond between two men who lived lives of purpose and integrity. How ingrained are ideas behind virginity, beauty and the stereotype bitch? After today's discussion, you may question what you thought about these archetypes. Christopher Kennedy opens up the dialogue around how they are still so prevelent in our society today, how to become more aware of them and how to move out of them. It left me wondering what we are still teaching our children and how this affects them as adults. Is the moral compass meant to evolve?Christopher Kennedy didn’t set out to be an “author.” A man who speaks from the heart and advocates for women. The world needs women with their pride, dignity, and grace intact. I’m Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design recorded in the Living Kitchen Studio with a trip back to Modernism Week in Palm Springs for a sit down with some of the all-star team of designers who worked on this years Christopher Kennedy Compound. Christopher has done a magnificent job on this project over the years and this offering is no exception. This golf course home is everything you could ask for if you are looking to channel the Mid-Century Modern architecture straight out of the swanky, atomic-era 1950’s. This project is the official shophouse of Modernism Week and it features some remarkable creatives. I sat with a few in the backyard to ask about the experience and inspiration for the project. Before we get into this, I want to thank you for listening to Convo By Design. It has been six years and we are doing more than we ever have before. This year alone, Convo By Design will be at Modernism Week, KBIS, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, WestWeek, LCDQ Legends, Los Angeles Design Festival, Fall Market and of course, WestEdge Design Fair. Make sure you catch every episode with upcoming activities. Subscribe to the show wherever you get your favorite podcasts. This was so much fun. Special thanks to everyone from the Christopher Kennedy Compound including; Nancy Joseph, Keith Fortner, Lisa McDennon, Kelly Green, Gordon Kurtis and Christopher Kennedy. Thank you to my friends at Sub-Zero, Wolf, Cove, Snyder Diamond, Vondom and Article for your support and making this podcast possible. And thank you for listening, subscribing, rating the show on iTunes and coming out to the events to say ‘hello’. I love it, and I appreciate you. See you next week.

Tune in for a conversation between Victoria Reis is the Co-Founder, Executive & Artistic Director of Transformer & the Environmental Performance Agency (EPA). Transformer is proud to present The Department of Weedy Affairs, an exhibition, and series of programmatic performances and workshops led by the Environmental Performance Agency (EPA), an artist collective which imagines a governmental agency that is beyond human. Offering visitors an opportunity to engage with and learn from spontaneous urban plants (aka weeds) through a toolkit of radical care practices and embodied science. The exhibition includes a living participatory sculpture featuring a weedy island of refugee plants from the marginal ecologies (ex. vacant lots, sidewalk cracks, highway medians) of Washington DC. An accompanying installation features liberated soil from the National Mall, deleted data from the US EPA’s website, tools and prompts that invite the visitor to experiment with and contemplate other ways of engaging with an urban multi-species environment. A recording booth and web platform encourage visitors to share their voice, and to speculate, imagine and contribute their ideas for a beyond human stewardship and weedy solidarity. Since the appointment of Scott Pruitt in 2017, the US Environmental Protection Agency has removed nearly all mention of climate change from its website and strategic plan, has censored its own scientists, and has overturned 33+ rules and rolled back dozens of initiatives that protect human and more-than-human health. With an aim to foster public commentary that articulates a vision for environmental justice on behalf of all life, challenging the current administration’s self-serving disregard for climate and the environment, the EPA invites you to call or text the Environmental Performance Agency’s hotline (240) 808-2372 or submit online at www.OnBehalfOf.Life, and leave a message for Scott Pruitt and US EPA officials on behalf of a life form who can’t. Throughout the exhibition, the EPA: Department of Weedy Affairs invites the public to consider multi-species empathy, the ecological interdependence of all life, and to imagine a governmental agency that advocates for ecological justice in a multispecies entangled world. At the close of the exhibition, the EPA Agents will lead a public march to deliver the collection of comments, desires, and demands on behalf of the weeds to the US EPA on the National Mall – The EPA meets the EPA. The Environmental Performance Agency (EPA) is an artist collective founded in 2017 and named in response to the proposed defunding of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Appropriating the US EPA’s acronym, The EPA’s primary goal is to shift thinking around the terms environment, performance, and agency – using artistic, social, and embodied / kinesthetic practices to advocate for the agency of all living performers co-creating our environment, specifically through the lens of spontaneous urban plants, native or migrant. Since launching in March 2017, the EPA has developed a range of workshops and artworks exploring interspecies social engagement and human-nonhuman solidarity. This includes activities such as fostering wild plant literacy, developing scores for movement and awareness explorations, DIY bioremediation, public (performative/kinesthetic) fieldwork, and interspecies storytelling for a world beyond human. Current EPA Agents include Catherine Grau, andrea haenggi, Ellie Irons, and Christopher Kennedy.

Specialty Pharmacy Podcast co-host Christopher Kennedy, COO with Heritage Biologics interviews the founder of HemoTool, Dakota Rosenfelt. HemoTool is Unlike Any Other Bleeding Disorder App Hi! My name is Dakota Rosenfelt and I am a 21-year-old with Severe Hemophilia A. Diagnosed at 13 months of age, I have grown up only knowing life with a bleeding disorder. However, I refuse to let that set me back, define who I am, or limit my goals. From an early age, I learned the importance of maintaining a prophylactic schedule, keeping track of bleeds, and knowing when it was time to order more factor; in other words, there is MUCH more to managing a bleeding disorder beyond just self-infusion. During my high school years, I quickly began to fill my schedule with various activities and events which made time-management all-that-more important. I began thinking of how I could manage both the activities of my daily life along with the various responsibilities which come hand-in-hand with having Hemophilia in an efficient manner. The “lightbulb” moment came once I was approached by my local HTC in Kansas City to take part in an extended half-life factor trial. While participating in the study, I was given a device to track all my treatments and the thing was cumbersome and just plain awful. Once I started to think of things which would make the device easier to use, I began researching other current technologies and apps which existed and found one thing in common; none of them had the simplistic functionality and ease-of-use I had been looking for. It was at this time that I began my journey of creating a mobile app that was all-encompassing; a “tool” I could fit in my pocket which allowed me to independently manage my hemophilia when it was convenient for me, but also with minimal hassle. Thus, HemoTool was born! My work did not end there, I felt there was much more I could do for my community and for the many others worldwide living with chronic medical conditions. To make my mission possible I started a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was created to assist those living with chronic medical conditions in managing their overall health and improving their clinical outcome. I have made it my personal mission to ensure all affected by chronic conditions have one less thing to worry about in life. Nothing speaks to me more than someone overcoming a condition and living life to its fullest. We shouldn't have to say “I suffer from a chronic condition;” we should be saying ”A chronic condition suffers from me! Las Vegas Market Live: Christopher Kennedy Today in The Lounge, Nick talks with Christopher Kennedy LIVE from the Las Vegas Market in the Zuo Decor Showroom. Christopher and Nick discuss Christopher's interior design past, how he runs his business with a team of four and advice for aspiring interior designers. Getting to know Christopher Christopher's dream car is a Range Rover but right now he drives a Mini Cooper. His favorite color is green and his favorite fashion accessory is shoes. He also loves pocket squares. When he's asked “Beer, wine, or cocktail?” Christopher responds with “a vodka soda.” Some of his favorite vacation spots are Jamaica, Aspen, Breckenridge, Hawaii and Puerto Vallarta. His favorite book he's read in the last year is, The Magic and The Secret. Christopher's dad gave him a lot of books before he passed away which he enjoys very much because it makes him feel like his dad is still with him. Christopher has recently launched a new art collection with Wendover Art Group which includes photography, paintings, collages and mixed media. How Christopher Got His Start Christopher wanted to be an Architect ever since he was about six or seven years old. His dad gave him his first book on Frank Lloyd Wright when he was about eight or nine. He was always drawing floor plans and elevations. Christopher went to school for a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture but about three years in, he realized it wasn't exactly what he wanted to do. So he became a Disney Imagineer but, that didn't work out either… After Christopher graduated, he was a stockbroker. He did that for a few years but wasn't passionate about it either. So finally, in 2005 he moved to Palm Springs and reinvented himself. He went back to his roots in design and architecture. Christopher grew up in San Francisco with his dad but later moved in with his mom who married a rocket scientist. They were transferred to Littleton, Colorado. Christopher still spent summers with his dad. Christopher received his first interior design job as an assistant to a project manager for Steve Chase Associates. While working for them he also worked a few side jobs and after nine months he believed he knew everything he needed to know to run his own business (at 28 years old). Thus, Christopher Kennedy Inc. was born. Although Christopher thought he knew everything back then, he says he's still learning as he runs his business today. The Business Today Christopher Kennedy Inc only has four associates: himself, his husband David, his office coordinator Rosemary, and Joann who runs the retail division. He does have some part-time workers too. His retail location was added to the business three years ago. With it came added stress and extra expenses to Christopher's life. On the other hand, the store attracted clients and made him more approachable. When the store first opened he stocked it with more of a couture collection, but now, he now focuses on design styles and affordable pieces. The store focuses all the little things people don't realize that they need until they own a home. Christopher also has his own furniture line. He does about 80% of his projects in Palm Springs but also recently completed a job in Jamaica. His design aesthetic focuses more on a contemporary style with a twist of mid-century modern. Christopher's second book, Making Midcentury Modern was released in February 2017. It has 100 tips on how to bring style and ethos into your life. He was approached by a publisher who wanted a book on Midcentury Design. Writing a book did take time away from his clients, as well as money away from him that he could have been earning, but he's proud to have his book published. As far as marketing goes, Christopher receives clients mainly through referrals. Contrary to what you might think, his fame may have has cost him clients because people have told him they thought he was too busy or too expensive to do their home.

This week's show is a cavalcade of amazing-ness. Duncan and Richard talk to Joseph Ketner II, Chief Curator at the Milwaukee Art Museum where we ask the question "did Francis Bacon simply need a hug?". Next, there is an excerpt from a lecture by Christopher Kennedy, President, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., on the future of the Art Fair here in Chicago which is not to be missed as we move ever closer to the 2007 fair and away from the 2006 debacle. Christian Kuras guest stars in the expanded intro and Amanda is back from her travels to say all sorts of funny and possibly offensive things! Be sure to buy your Pitchfork Festival tickets! Sonic Youth is performing Daydream Nation in its entirety. Hot damn. Holy Guacamole the new Chicago Reader art listings (if you can even call them that) suck like space. For shame Reader, for shame. This is one of the biggest slaps to the art community in some time. Rise up!!! Lastly, PLEASE vote in this week's poll as we need your input on what might be changes to the format of the show. www.badatsports.com Planned for next week, artist and author David Robbins!!!
