ORIGINALLY RELEASED Mar 18, 2018 In this engaging episode, Breht sits down with philosopher and author J. Moufawad-Paul, the mind behind the influential books "The Communist Necessity" and "Continuity and Rupture" among others. Together, they delve deep into JMP's profound exploration of communism and Maoism, unpacking key concepts like revolutionary necessity, historical continuity, and theoretical rupture. This wide-ranging discussion tackles pivotal questions of Marxist theory: Why is communism not merely an ideological preference, but a necessity born from the contradictions of capitalism? How does Maoism represent both a continuity with Marxist-Leninist traditions and a significant rupture, signaling a critical evolution in revolutionary theory and practice? And importantly, what can contemporary revolutionaries and activists learn from this dialectical understanding of revolutionary history? Tune in to deepen your grasp of Marxism, enrich your theoretical toolkit, and learn about the nuances of marxism-leninism-maoism. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio https://revleftradio.com/ Outro Beat Prod. by flip da hood
In this episode, Alyson and Breht explore Friedrich Engels' Dialectics of Nature, a bold and underappreciated attempt to apply dialectical materialism to the natural sciences. Often dismissed or misunderstood, this unfinished work offers a sweeping view of reality - from physics and chemistry to evolution, human consciousness, and ecological breakdown - through the lens of Marxist philosophy. Together, they unpack Engels' central claim that nature itself unfolds dialectically: through contradiction, motion, transformation, and interconnection. They cover the three laws of dialectics, Engels' materialist account of human evolution, his critique of mechanistic science, vulgar materialism, and metaphysical thinking, and his early warnings about capitalism's ecological consequences. Along the way, they connect these insights to Marx's concept of species-being, and reflect on what this revolutionary worldview offers in the age of climate crisis, hyper-alienation, and late capitalist decay. Finally, Alyson and Breht have a fascinating open-ended discussion about the existential and spiritual implications of dialectical materialism as a worldview. Whether you're new to dialectical materialism or looking to deepen your understanding, this conversation reframes Engels' work as a profound contribution not just to Marxism, but to the philosophy of science itself. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio or here: https://www.patreon.com/TheRedMenace Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio & Red Menace HERE
This is small snippet from a much larger episode coming soon wherein Alyson and Breht cover Friedrich Engel's famous text “Dialectics of Nature”, in which Engels argues for dialectical materialism as a scientifically grounded, philosophically rigorous, and holistic worldview—one that understands nature, society, and thought as deeply interconnected and constantly evolving. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Jul 25, 2019 In this episode, Alyson and Breht dive into Mao Zedong's seminal text On Contradiction—a cornerstone of Marxist philosophy and revolutionary praxis. In this lecture, Breht provides an accessible but rigorous introduction to the Marxist theory of history: historical materialism. Breht explains how historical materialism is dialectical materialism applied to the evolution of human societies over time, the role that the base-superstructure model has in understanding culture and ideology, the long march from hunter-gatherer communal societies to slave empires to feudal monarchies to capitalist republics and beyond - to socialist democracy and ultimately to the communist transcendence of class society altogether, marking humanities maturation beyond its predatory phase and into history proper. Throughout the lecture, Breht provides examples, explores nuances, and highlights the pitfalls of attempts to change the system without the theoretical and practical tools of Marxism. I discuss the communist philosophy of dialectical materialism and how that's leading to the meltdowns we see after election day; I play audio from these meltdowns and how the patriots behind the scenes are clearly removing the head of the snake regrading stolen elections. I also discuss the education profession meltdown and the jab impact on the election as well. I also nominate myself for the Secretary of The Department of Education to burn the whole thing to the ground and then resign immediately after. Marxism and psychoanalysis have a rich and complicated relationship to one another, with countless figures and books written on the possible intersection of the two. Our guest today, Adrian Johnston, returns to NBN to discuss his own latest entry into the genre, Infinite Greed: The Inhuman Selfishness of Capital (Columbia UP, 2024). While the book does retread some already-covered territory, Johnston's book stands out as a unique entry in a crowded field by emphasizing the theoretical overlap of psychoanalytic concepts with the economic core of Marx's thinking. Libidinal economics are turned into, well, economics and vice-versa in this detailed and rigorously written study that deserves to become one of the canonical texts in the Freudo-Marxist tradition. Adrian Johnston is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico and a faculty member of the Emory Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the author of numerous books, including three previously discussed on this podcast; A New German Idealism: Hegel, Zizek and Dialectical Materialism, and Prolegomena to Any Future Materialism volumes one and two. Jupiter begins its year-long transit through Gemini on May 25, 2024, so we turned it into a Serendipity Session! We riff on a specific yet understated theme that Jupiter in Gemini is likely to expose: the need to transcend opposing forces. The world is seen through a binary lens in many ways. Gemini will highlight the contradictions, juxtapositions, dichotomies, contrast, and duality that's present in so many aspects of our lives. But Jupiter has an ability to create a mystical union when faced with opposites. Today I will discuss the religious background to Marxism and how it functions as a religious movement, with an actual esoteric background and presupposition - magical materialism and process philosophy. We will look at how dialectical materialism and praxis are crucial to understanding the global elite philosophy - it is not a real opposition to the power system. It is in the final analysis a self-negating worship of power.Richard's new course is here: https://www.universityofreason.com/a/2147619501/hZMWNFNp Send Superchats at any time here: https://streamlabs.com/jaydyer/tip The New Philosophy Course is here: https://marketplace.autonomyagora.com/philosophy101 Orders for the Red Book are here: https://jaysanalysis.com/product/the-red-book-essays-on-theology-philosophy-new-jay-dyer-book/ Subscribe to my site here: https://jaysanalysis.com/membership-account/membership-levels/ Follow me on R0kfin here: https://rokfin.com/jaydyer Use JAY50 promo code here https://choq.com for huge discounts - 50% off! What is dialectical materialism? Is dialectical materialism compatible with a biblical/Christian worldview?
It is interesting to have in the house a clock with a pendulum, not only for checking the time but also for reflecting a little. Without its pendulum, this type of clock does not function; the movement of the pendulum is profoundly significant. In ancient times the dogma of evolution did not exist. In those days the sages understood that historical processes always take place according to the Law of the Pendulum. Everything has its ebb and flow, its rise and fall, increase and decrease, moves to and from in accordance with this marvellous Law. It is not strange at all that everything oscillates, that everything is subject to the swaying of time, and that everything evolutes (evolves) and involutes. Joy lies at one extreme of the pendulum, sorrow lies at the other one. All our emotions, thoughts, longings and desires swing in accordance with the Law of the Pendulum. Hope and desperation, pessimism and optimism, passion and suffering, triumph and failure, profit and loss, assuredly correspond to the two extremes of pendular movement. Egypt rose, with all its power and majesty, on the banks of the sacred river, but when the pendulum went to the other side, when it rose by the opposite end, the country of the pharaohs fell and Jerusalem rose, the city beloved by Prophets. Israel fell when the pendulum changed position and the Roman Empire rose at the other extreme end. The pendular movement raises Empires and makes them fall, it causes the ascent of powerful civilizations and afterwards brings about their destruction, etc. At the right side of the pendulum can be placed the various religions, sects, pseudoesoteric and pseudo-occultist schools. At the left side of the pendulum’s movement can be placed all the schools of materialist type, Marxist, Atheist, Scepticist, etc. Which are the antithesis of pendular movement, changeable, subject to incessant permutation. The religious fanatic, due to any unusual event or disappointment, can move to the other extreme of the pendulum, becoming an atheist, a materialist, a sceptic. Due to any unusual incident, perhaps a metaphysical or transcendental event or a moment of indescribable terror, a materialistic and atheistic fanatic can shift to the opposite extreme of the pendulum’s motions and become an unbearably religious reactionary. Example: a priest defeated by the polemics of an esotericist, in desperation became incredulous and materialistic. We knew the case of a sceptical, atheistic woman who, because of a conclusive and definite metaphysical event, became a magnificent exponent of practical esotericism. In the name of truth we must declare that the true and absolute materialistic atheist is a sham, is nonexistent. Faced with the proximity of inevitable death; faced with an instant of indescribable terror, the enemies of the eternal, the incredulous ones and the materialists, instantaneously pass to the other extreme of the pendulum and end up praying, weeping and crying out with infinite faith and enormous devotion. Karl Marx himself, author of the Dialectical Materialism, was a fanatically religious jew who, after his death, was accorded the tributes of a chief Rabbi. Karl Marx prepared his Materialistic Dialectics with a sole purpose: “TO CREATE A WEAPON TO DESTROY THROUGH SCEPTICISM ALL THE RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD” This is a typical case of religious jealousy taken to the extreme, in no way could Marx accept the existence of other religions and preferred to destroy them with his Dialectics. Karl Marx complied with one of the protocols of Zion, which states literally: “It does not matter if we fill the world with materialism and repugnant Atheism. The day when we triumph we will disseminate the religion of Moses properly codified in a dialectical form and will not permit any other religion in the world” It is very interesting to note that in the Soviet Union, religions are persecuted and that the Soviet people are taught the materialistic dialectics whilst within the synagogues the Talmud, the Bible and the religion are studied and they work freely without any problem. The lords of the Soviet government are religious fanatics of the law of Moses, yet they poison the people with the farce of Dialectical Materialism. We would never pass judgement against the people of Israel, we are only making a declaration against certain elite double-dealers who pursue undisclosed ambitions. Whilst poisoning the people with Materialistic Dialectics, they secretly practice Moses’ religion. Materialism and Spiritualism with all their resulting theories, prejudices and preconceptions are processed in the mind, in accordance with the Law of the Pendulum and are fashionable according to custom and time. Spirit and matter are highly debatable, thorny concepts which no one understands. The mind knows nothing about spirit, it knows nothing about matter. A concept is nothing other than just that: a concept. Reality is not a concept, although many ideas can be conceived about reality. The spirit is the spirit (the Being) and can only be known to itself. It is written: THE BEING IS THE BEING AND THE REASON FOR THE BEING TO BE IS THE SAME BEING”. The fanatics of matter-God, the scientists of Dialectical Materialism are a hundred per cent absurd and empiristic. They talk about matter with dazzling and stupid selfsufficiency when in fact they know nothing at all about it. What is matter? Which of those dumb scientists know? The so much hackneyed matter, also is a very prickly and highly disputable concept. What is matter? Is it cotton? Iron? Flesh? Starch? Stone? Copper? A cloud or what? Saying that all is matter would be as empirical and absurd as asserting that the whole human organism is a liver or a heart, or a kidney. Obviously, one thing is one thing and another thing is another thing, each organ is different and each substance is distinct. Then, which of all these substances can be the matter they so much talk about? Many people play with the pendulum’s concepts. However, concepts are not in fact reality. The mind knows only illusory forms of nature, but it knows nothing of the truth contained within such forms. Theories go out of fashion with time and the passing of years and we find that what we learned at school is useful for nothing afterwards; in conclusion: nobody knows anything. Concepts of the extreme right or the extreme left of the pendulum go out of date like women’s fashion. All those concepts are processes of the mind, things that take place on the surface of the understanding, nonsense, vanities of the intellect. To any psychological discipline, another discipline is opposed, any logically structured psychological process is opposed by another one similiar to it and, at the end of the day, what? The real, the truth, is what interests us, but this is not a question of the pendulum, it cannot be found amongst the swings of theories and beliefs. Truth is the unknown from instant to instant, from moment to moment. Truth is found at the centre of the pendulum, not at the extreme right and not at the extreme left either. When Jesus was asked: “What is the truth?”, he kept a profound silence. And when the Buddha was asked the same question he turned his back and left. The truth is not a question of opinions, neither of theories, nor of prejudices of the extreme right or the extreme left. The concept which the mind may build up about the truth, is never the truth. The idea that the understanding may have about the truth, is never the truth. The opinion we may hold regarding the truth, however respectable it be, is in no way the truth. Neither spiritual tendencies nor their materialist opponents can ever lead us to the truth. Truth is something that must be directly experienced, just as when we stick a finger into fire and it burns, or when we take in water and choke. The centre of the pendulum is within ourselves, and it is there where we must directly discover and experience the real, the truth. We need to directly auto-explore ourselves in order to auto-discover and profoundly know ourselves. The experience of the truth only comes when we have eliminated the undesirable elements which as a whole constitute the myself. Truth comes only by eliminating error. Only by disintegrating the Self, my mistakes, my prejudices and fears, my passions and desires, beliefs and fornications, all types of intellectual obstinacy and of self-sufficiency, does the experience of the real come to us. The truth has nothing to do with what has or has not been said, nor with what has or has not been written. It only comes to us when the myself has died. The mind cannot seek the truth because it does not know it. The mind cannot recognise the truth because it has never known it. The truth comes spontaneously to us when we have eliminated all those undesirable elements which constitute the myself, the self. As long as the consciousness remains bottled in the self, it will be unable to experience that which is real, that which lies beyond the body, affections and the mind, that which is the truth. When the myself is reduced to cosmic dust, the consciousness is liberated, it finally wakes up and directly experiences the truth. The Great Kabir Jesus rightly said: “KNOW THE TRUTH AND IT WILL MAKE YOU FREE”. John 8:31 What use is there for us in knowing fifty thousand theories if we have never experienced the Truth? Anyone’s intellectual system is very respectable, but any system has its opponent and neither one nor the other are the truth. It is better to auto-explore ourselves in order to auto-know ourselves and, one day get to directly experience the real, the TRUTH. Samael Aun Weor

In this episode we interview China Miéville. China Miéville is the multi-award-winning author of many works of fiction and non-fiction. His fiction includes The City and the City, Embassytown and This Census-Taker. He has won the Hugo, World Fantasy, and Arthur C. Clarke awards. His non-fiction includes the photo-illustrated essay London's Overthrow. He is also the author of October: The Story of the Russian Revolution. He has written for various publications, and is a founding editor of the journal Salvage. He is also a former member of multiple socialist party formations and organizations. In this conversation China joins the podcast to talk about his latest book, A Spectre, Haunting: On the Communist Manifesto. The book provides an introduction to The Communist Manifesto which provides readers with a guide to understanding the Manifesto and the many specters it has conjured. Through his unique and unorthodox reading, Miéville offers a spirited defense of the enduring relevance of Marx and Engels' ideas. The book also contains the full text of the Manifesto and multiple prefaces penned by Marx & Engels. You can pick the book up directly from Haymarket Books at 40% off currently. We really want to thank Haymarket and China Miéville for donating 40 copies of the book (!!) and also for making a donation to help cover the cost of postage to our incarcerated book club through our partnership with Massive Bookshop and Prisons Kill. We do still need to raise about $150 more dollars to cover the cost of postage to get this book inside, and we'll include a link to contribute to that effort in the show notes. Last month we were able, along with some donations from Massive Bookshop and our patrons to provide 40 copies of Saidiya Hartman's Scenes of Subjection to those incarcerated readers. As for the show itself, It is December, currently for the month we've had more nonrenewals than we have new patrons, which is not unexpected this time of year as people try to balance holiday expenses. However if you have the capacity to become a patron of the show, you can do so for as little as $1 a month or $10.80 per year, at patreon.com/millennialsarekilingcapitalism. Just in time for Christmas some government officials have taken drastic action to curb the spread of a vague disease by specifically terrifying the public and hoping to coerce compliance in the shut down of society. These actions have for two straight years accomplished what many religious-minded have been worried about: the canceling of Christmas. Some may call it the war on Christmas but the anti-religious simply deny that claim. Whatever the case, the true war is being waged on culture. When people tell me that there is no war on Christmas, I do not agree. When people tell me that there is a war on Christmas, I don't necessarily agree. It's more complex than that. This episode of Season 5 of the BSP Podcast features Adriano Lotito, Milano-Bicocca University. The presentation is taken from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology' Online. ABSTRACT: This contribution focuses on the Tran Duc Thao's work, Phenomenology and Dialectical Materialism, that is fundamental to post-war French thought, having influenced thinkers as Lyotard and Derrida amongst others and representing the first systematic attempt to synthesize Marxism and phenomenology. Firstly I examine the Tran's reconstruction of Husserlian phenomenology. Originally there is an objective idealism theorizing the independence of the object; then there is its reversal in a subjective idealism highlighting the constituting consciousness; finally there is the switch from static to genetic phenomenology with the thematization of the life-world as historical-empirical ground (I). Secondly I explore the contradiction indicated by Tran between the Husserl's idealistic frame, implicating the reproduction of an abstract dualism, and the results of the concrete analysis, bound to the original claim of going back to the things themselves. This tension is particularly detectable in The Origin of Geometry (II). Thirdly I discuss the Tran's solution to this riddle, namely the radicalisation of the materialistic stance discovered in the Husserl's late writings towards a Marxist horizon. The genesis of the a priori forms of the antepredicative experience is derived from the evolution of species and from the development of human work. The dialectic of behaviour as practical interaction between organism and nature determines the emergence of meanings structuring the experience. The notion of intentionality is interpreted as result of an immanent negation, the aufhebung of any immediate determinations through the work of an emerging bodily-social intersubjectivity that in this way reaches the self-consciousness. The real movement, insofar as is sketched out and repressed at once, is sublated as intentional content. Transcendental subjectivity becomes an immanent subjectivisation of the object through praxis. This could lead to an alternative antireductionist ontologization of phenomenology despite a teleologism that risks to cage the dialectic in a too narrow path (III). BIO: Adriano Lotito graduated in Philosophy (B.A) at the University of Bologna with a thesis entitled Phenomenology and Marxism in Tran Duc Thao (Supervisor Prof. Manlio Iofrida) and in Philosophy of the Contemporary World (M.A) at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University with a thesis entitled Criteria of Normativity in the Axel Honneth's Critical Theory (Supervisor Prof. Roberto Mordacci). He is currently attending the Advanced Course in Critical Theory of Society at the Milano-Bicocca University. He is focusing, with the view to a future Ph.D., on the rethinking of the immanent critique specifically in connection with the work transformations. This recording is taken from the BSP Annual Conference 2020 Online: 'Engaged Phenomenology'. Organised with the University of Exeter and sponsored by Egenis and the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health. "China's Common Prosperity Initiative and Market Socialism | Thinking Out Loud"In this episode of his "Thinking Out Loud" series, Double D discusses the series of reforms being implemented by the Communist Party of China (CPC), known collectively as the "Common Prosperity Initiative (CPI)."Double D uses articles from several sources to try and paint a coherent vision of what these reforms mean for the Chinese people, and for the CPC's vision of "socialism with Chinese characteristics."Along the way Double D gives a brief historical interlude, examining the legacy of Deng Xiaoping's opening of the Chinese economy, as well as a quick definition of Dialectical Materialism and how it applies to what the CPC calls "Market Socialism."Double D goes on to suggest that the CPI is a huge step in building Chinese socialism, a move which stands alongside the One Belt One Road initiative, as well as President Xi Jinping's rural worker cooperative program, as a clear alternative system to the current global neo-liberal order.Don't forget to join the YouTube fam!youtube.com/entitledmillennialsPlease help us produce more content and grow our channel by becoming a Patron!patreon.com/entitledmillennialsSupport the show and independent media!paypal.me/entitledmillennials

Djamil and Rudy sit down for a hardcore episode on the interaction between Soviet diamat philosophy and Quantum Mechanics. We discuss the analytic core of dialectical materialism through the lens of the philosophy of science and the position of scientific realism. We analyze the main propositions of this core in an attempt to extract what is best, and most relevant to physics: those propositions and thematics which will play heavily in formulating and advancing soviet physics. We discuss what realism is within this framework, how Lenin understood it, and how that informed his debates with the neo-positivists. We continue by outlining what parts of quantum mechanics tend to go against our most basic intuitions, the Copenhagen interpretation and its neo-positivist roots, and how that informed the reception of quantum mechanics in the USSR. We finish with V. A. Fock's efforts to give a realistic interpretation of quantum mechanics consistent with dialectic materialism which managed to change Niels Bohr's mind, which sets a prime example for the successful application of dialectical materialism to science. Many things in modern life make us fearful. The Fear Inoculant series will explore ways to be less fearful and live a more authentic life. In this, the first of three episodes, we cover a host of philosophical concepts aimed at demystifying reality in order to lay the groundwork for examining social movements in the next episode. We start with exploring how certain Events can seem to change the past and present, Reality itself and a couple ways to quantify it, how Noam Chomsky and Slavoj Zizek can never seem to agree, Dialectics and the limits of reason, Metaphysics and how to separate yourself from the universe, Freedom and how to measure it, Existentialism and other curses from the gods, Sociology and how to build a society, how school brainwashes you, plus Economics, The State, Violence, Alienation, Structural Ideology, Neurotypicality, Revolution, and somehow even more! After the deaths of Marx and Engels, socialists began taking up the important task of summarizing their work for popularization. In 1919, for example, Georg Lukács, the Hungarian Marxist, argued that the essence of Marx’s project is not the correctness or incorrectness of his many theses, but rather, his dialectical method. Stressing the significance of Marx’s method Lukács notes that it is a “weapon” of the proletariat and “an instrument of war” (1919/1971, 224). Marx never wrote a text on dialectics or even used the term “dialectical materialism,” and so articulating Marx’s dialectic was left to Engels and those who followed. There are, as a result, a great many debates about what exactly dialectical materialism is. There has also been a tendency to oversimplify dialectical materialism into a mechanical and deterministic dogma. This article outlines Marx’s method, dialectical materialism, a theory and manner of understanding change. It is a theory that grasps how many of the competing social forces driving the movement of society are often hidden or mystified, and that gives us a way of uncovering them. It is a method that understands that unveiling social forces must be done in such a way as to foster class-for-self-consciousness within the working class as a revolutionary force. Toward these ends this article introduces the major components of dialectical materialism, including the negation of the negation, sublation, the unity of opposites, and the transformation of quantity into quality. This show is jam packed with critical discernment of complex terminology and is essential for understanding the central dogma perplexing our world today.
Reformed. Jolly. Salty. Spicy. Long. But so worth it. A long caveat on the Overton Window: SPICY ALERT: Part of our Goal here at Reformed Operator is to open the Overton window, and by that we mean reforming the window to somewhere reasonable. In a culture dead-set on never being offended, we need to discuss things that are offensive to a culture offended by Christ. The term Patriarchy gets a bad rap because of twisted men abusing it. The way we understand biblical patriarchy is covenantal headship stemming from the difference in nature of men and women. RO does not reject complementarianism, but rather some of the unique sects emerging i.e., “thin comp.” We argue that “thin comp” creates unbiblical intersectional distinctions driven by gross caricatures. Most of the examples given in this episode stem from several episodes of a popular women’s theology podcast. Their understanding is driven by intersectional distinctions that drive at voluntary roles and a bizarre idealism, rather than driven by distinct natures and duties. Feminism has created a straw man of the scriptural understanding of patriarchy and is dangerously close to removing the term completely from the church, effectively making something that is used in scripture into a heinous caricature. Ultimately demeaning scripture by perverting hermeneutics through dialectical idealism and shifting the system of covenantal headship in a “progressive” way. We don’t believe the term patriarchy should be surrendered to abusers and we understand the recoil of some at the mere mention of the word. Thus ends our qualification, now go get a water. It’s about to get spicy. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions email us at ReformedOperator@gmail.com or reach out to us on twitter. Everyone's favorite passage in scripture! 1 Corinthians 11:1-16. Shots Fired. It's a 4 out of 5 jalapeño on the SPICY!!!!! scale. Dave’s guest this week is Pastor Sean of The Response Church- who came on to discuss a topic hotter than election (or the presidential race). Yes, we went there! You guessed it! Our episode name is a pun poking fun at two "Thin Complementarian" books and a bonus head coverings reference. They run the gauntlet, head (re)coverings, authority, submission, servant lordship, and some spicy asides that might stun you. Sean (and Baptist Dave) holds to the Textus Receptus or "Received Text view." Check out "The Amazing Dr. Ransom's Bestiary of Adorable Fallacies" We smash the common complaints against the "Father Rule" laid out in scripture. The flames of the Straw People rise high. Domestic abuse? Weird views on the Lord's Supper? -Patriarchy as (Presby) Dave and Sean understand it has taken some hard hits. It's sloppy, and often completely misused, abused, and taken to extremes. Their argument? Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Patriarchy could also be called simply covenantal headship. The man is the head of the home and is the breadwinner. -Complementarianism (a synthesis, or golden mean, of sorts) is currently splitting into two camps according to the trends: THICK- Men and Women have distinct natures that give forth roles (or duties) THIN- Men and Women have distinct but voluntary roles. These roles are voluntary and are categorized as "should" not must. -Egalitarianism Simply put, this is androgyny. Men and women are the same and can do as they please. There is no distinction in capacity in the church or home. Sean throws in a Baptist Catechism for use in your household if you feel the inclination. You can find Dave's recommended Children's Catechism here. Reformed Operator discriminates, but not too hard on our 1689 pals. The missing members from Sean's Baptist Church rolls aren't actually dead people... they're Presbyterians (we stole them)! We talk status and value in the world's eyes. What is true glory? We talk Westminster Larger Catechism with selections from between 123-133. Independent Fundamentalist Baptists (IFB) takes heavies all around. Dave gives a crash course on Hegel's Dialectical Idealism, Marx's Dialectical Materialism. The postmodern assault on faithful biblical hermeneutics is put on notice. ESV takes heavies for its μαλακοὶ translation. (See 1 Cor 6:9 where'd effeminate go?) The baptists go back to Calvin to bring "libidinous" back into the conversation. Ask your doctor about your libidinous. Dave busts out some parity in the federal (covenantal) government systems, military, common law, and the christian life. Get after it, men. You need to die daily and lovingly honor your wife while protecting, honoring, cherishing, and serving her. Dave also started our twitter awhile back and has some clever Dog Whistle commentary. Don't be better with balls than a bible, football fans. Dave mentions the origins of fan, fanatic, and fanum. You can't call cadence with the church if you aren't in one. Don't be a coward at home. We know it's hard, but we also know you don't take excuses. You just get after it. You need the finished work of Christ by grace through faith. Pray. Strive. Stand Firm. Get in a church now. Godspeed.
Episode Notes We're back with another episode of Fright School! We catch up on the week with Joe watching THE BABYSITTER: KILLER QUEEN as part of his VOLUNTARY horror viewing every night in October! Joshua has been on a rewatch of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL after viewing a Sarah Paulson wig video. Joshua is also visiting THE SUNKEN PLACE with Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes' online lecture series exploring the history of Black Horror. We compare childhood Halloween movies with Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. We're also super excited for October to bring us THE CRAFT: LEGACY and THE WITCHES! Finally we kick off our Halloween 2020 series dedicated to the Dark Lord himself! The Devil. The Morningstar. Satan. Father Lucifer. (That last one might just be a Tori Amos tune...) Whatever you know him as, there are miles of film reel dedicated to his works. We start our series with 1976's THE OMEN. We lay out three ways to analyze and contextualize the film: pure Biblical allegory as a warning for the End Times, a political allegory of the horrors of unchecked capitalism, and the paranoia of parenting children in the era of Free Love. Joe tries to follow Joshua's discussion of Dialectical Materialism and Marxism. We hope the listener fares better... HAIL SATAN! FOLLOW US! Torkil Lauesen joins Breht to discuss his newest book "The Principal Contradiction". In this discussion, Torkil and Breht discuss dialectical materialism, how it is applied in real world situations, and the role that contradiction plays in it all. In the 1970s and 80s, Torkil Lauesen was a member of a clandestine communist cell which carried out a series of robberies in Denmark, netting very large sums which were then sent on to various national liberation movements in the Third World. Following their capture in 1989, Torkil would spend six years in prison. While incarcerated, he was involved in prison activism and received a Masters degree in political science. He is currently a member of International Forum, an anti-imperialist organization based in Denmark. I take a swing at Dialectical Materialism, the philosophy and analytical method behind Marxism. I break down the concept into two parts; Materialism and Dialectics, then take a look at their historical development, contrast them against Idealism and Metaphysical Analysis, and apply them to some examples to help understand them in an approachable way. Warning: I am not trained in philosophy, so if you're looking for an expert, high-level discussion, I advise you to look elsewhere. If you're looking to join me on my journey to educate and develop my understanding of Marxism, then you've come to the right place! Further episodes will build on and clarify what I discuss in this episode, so please submit any feedback you'd like me to include in future episode. It is clear that Covid-19 is an event of historic proportions, but what does that really mean? What do we mean when we say that an event "shaped the course of history," and how much history is there really left to shape? Episode 7 dives into one of my favorite books of all time, Less Than Nothing, Slavoj Žižek's gutsy attempt to rehabilitate Hegel for the contemporary age. Recorded on lockdown during the coronavirus outbreak in New York, this is part 2 of a three-part episode exploring our society's tacit belief in the "the end of history," and what we can do to shed this politically-charged and dangerous illusion. In this episode I briefly go over the idea of dialectical materialism. So often a buzzword is Marxist circles, the idea off dialectics and materialism to understand history is a fundamental idea to understand if one is to ever understand what Marx was really saying and how he thought. At the same time, the notions […]

Podcast host Luke Ford is the second to answer questions about the October Revolution, his views and thoughts on the beginning of what would become the USSR, and its potential relevance for today. Luke's Main Points: *The 'centenary' in and of itself, is artificial. There is nothing inherently 'special' about 100 (years) *Despite this, the centenary of the October Revolution is meaningful because of the heightened climate of unrest today *Despite the disappearance of the 2nd world, Dialectical Materialism and Marxism can adapt themselves to the actual situation as it stands 100 years after October *We find ourselves in a "Capitalist Realism", with which it has formerly been impossible to think of breaking out of *The Revolutionary arc that began in 1917 in Petrograd and has almost completely ended now, has failed
