Welcome to Season 5, Episode 21! We're really honored to have today's guest Georgette Bhathena, the Chief Programs Officer at The Asian American Foundation. She's here to talk to us about the 2025 STAATUS Index, AKA (Social Tracking of Asian Americans in the United States). Georgette has extensive work experience in the philanthropy and grant-making sector. Prior to joining TAAF, they worked at Zoom as the Global Philanthropy Pillar Lead for Zoom Cares. And that's not the only place that Georgette has left their impact. Georgette has held various roles at both private and not for profit groups including at Tipping Point Community, the San Francisco Foundation, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Citibank, just to name a few places. And Georgette helped lead the creation of the 2025 STAATUS Index. Now in its fifth year, the data continues to amaze, and sometimes dishearten us. However, the only way to change things is through education and more of us trying to make things better. We highly recommend that you download and read the 2025 STAATUS Index. You can also support TAAF's work through donations and using their resources. In 2003, a group of Indian Americans established the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), an organization explicitly modeled on the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), in a bid to address anti-Hindu discrimination in the US. Just as the ADL has long insisted that fighting American antisemitism requires bolstering support for Israel, the HAF committed itself to lobbying for India's Hindu nationalist movement in the name of protecting Hindu Americans' civil rights, an approach that has garnered significant success. The HAF is not the only organization that has drawn inspiration from the ADL. In 2021, the Asian American Foundation (TAAF) was formed in direct partnership with the ADL as a way to address growing anti-Asian racism. While lacking connection to a single ethnonationalist movement, TAAF nevertheless drew on the ADL's and HAF's approaches in positioning anti-Asian racism as a unique problem requiring carceral solutions instead of solidaristic organizing. As such, TAAF debuted with ADL head Jonathan Greenblatt as the only non-Asian person on its board, and Hindu nationalist Sonal Shah as its founding president. The HAF and TAAF's use of the ADL model has thus far helped them achieve significant support and legitimacy. However, as the ADL itself faces an unprecedented crisis of legitimacy in the wake of October 7th, affiliation with it now risks becoming a liability. For instance, following members' criticism over its ties to an increasingly repressive Greenblatt, TAAF removed him from his board this July (while still affirming its “strategic relationship” with the ADL). As dissent continues to grow in Asian and South Asian American communities—with reporters and activists questioning ties of anti-racist groups in the US to injustices abroad—it is not just ties to the ADL but the power of the ADL model of antiracism that stands to come into question. To discuss these developments, Jewish Currents news editor Aparna Gopalan spoke to associate editor Mari Cohen, New Yorker contributing writer E. Tammy Kim, and Savera coalition activist Prachi Patankar about the similarities and differences between the ADL, the HAF, and TAAF; their embrace of a “hate crimes” approach to anti-racism and what it leaves out; their ties to supremacist movements; and their shifting fortunes in the wake of the pressures over the past year. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 21! It's time for the 2024 STAATUS Index published by The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) with partnership from Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change (LAAUNCH), AAPI Data, and the Asian American Research Initiative. This annual survey is a social tracking and national assessment of attitudes and stereotypes towards Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. In this episode, we review the report and provide an overview of it. We also dig into each of the sections and reflect on responses. As always, we highly recommend that you download the STAATUS Index and read it yourself. It's very well written with easily accessible information, so don't be afraid that it's data-rich. In our recurring segment we ask “What's Going On?” as we reflect on the sheer number of Asian Pacific-led TV shows that have been canceled in the last year or so. It's hard to wrap our heads around the fact that the last year has seen cancellations of The Afterparty, Kung Fu, Doogie Kamealoha M.D., NCIS: Hawaiʻi, Young Rock, Quantum Leap, American Born Chinese, The Brothers Sun, Warrior, and Our Flag Means Death. We look at ratings, viewership, and ultimately ask, “What's Going On?” If you like what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 8! Today's conversation is with Amy Chu, a co-founder and former editor of A. Magazine, screenwriter, co-founder of Alpha Girl Comics, and well-known comic book author. Her latest title is Fighting to Belong! Volume 1 (out now, so go get it), which is a graphic novel focused on the history and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders in America. Published by Third State Books, Fighting to Belong! is co-written with Amy's son, Alexander Chang, and illustrated by Louie Chin. It's a collaborative project with The Asian American Foundation, The Asian American Education Project, and others. The importance of Fighting to Belong! cannot be overstated. Through an engaging story, readers will be entertained, engaged, educated, and empowered. Amy has written a diverse collection of titles that include Poison Ivy, Kiss, Wonder Woman, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, and Ant-Man. Two of our favorite works by Amy are the Trot and Cap'n Bill series for teens and Carmilla: The First Vampire graphic novel. Amy is able to weave in diversity and depth to her stories in a way that makes typically underrepresented people (like API) feel seen and heard. In our conversation, we talk about all of these things as well as her journey to comics, the importance of diverse storytelling, the status of Fighting to Belong! Volume 2, what draws her to writing complex characters, and so much more. Whether you like comics, good storytelling, history, or diversity, we highly recommend getting Fighting to Belong! or any of Amy's other work, but especially the Trot and Cap'n Bill series, Carmilla: The First Vampire, and Poison Ivy. TAAF is a convener, incubator, and funder committed to accelerating opportunity and prosperity for Asia and Pacific Islanders (API) communities. TAAF supports advocates and organizations committed to AAPI causes so that together they can more effectively take action against hate and violence, and build the infrastructure needed to improve API advocacy, power, and representation across American society. Tami Bui and Catt Phan talk to Sonal about how together we all can build community, fight against racism and hate, and create a permanent and irrevocable sense of belonging -- how to turn fear into possibility. George E. Hardy in March 1943, at the age of 17, passed the written and physical examinations for the US Army Aviation Cadet program.  In July 1943 he was called to active duty and sent to Keesler Army Air Field, Biloxi, Mississippi, for basic training.  In September 1943 he was assigned to the 320th College Training Detachment at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.  His group was scheduled to take college-level courses, at Tuskegee Institute, for a period of five months. This training was cut short in the beginning of December, as his group was transferred to Tuskegee Army Air Field (TAAF) for Aviation Cadet training, as part of Class 44-H.  In September 1944 he graduated as a single-engine pilot and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In November he was transferred to Walterboro AAF in South Carolina for combat flying training in P-47 aircraft.  This combat flying training was completed in early February 1945, and he was shipped overseas to Italy.  In Italy, he was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, where he flew 21 combat missions over Germany in P-51 aircraft.  Those missions were mainly high-altitude escort missions of heavy bombers, but many of the missions also included strafing of ground targets.  He returned from Italy in August 1945 and served at TAAF, until it closed in the summer of 1946.  In July 1946 he was transferred to Lockbourne AAF, Ohio where he was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron, flying P-47 aircraft. He was discharged from active duty in November 1946. He attended New York University, School of Engineering, in the Bronx, from September 1947 to May 1948. He was recalled to active duty at Lockbourne Air Force Base (LAFB), Ohio, in June 1948.  He was assigned to the 301st Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, flying P-47 aircraft.  In September 1948 he was reassigned as a student in the Airborne Electronics Maintenance Officers Course at Keesler AFB, Mississippi.  The course of study covered radar and long-range navigational equipment on fighter and bomber aircraft.  He graduated in August 1949.  In July 1949 the USAF instituted racial integration and personnel at Lockbourne AFB were reassigned to Air Force bases worldwide.  After graduation in August 1949, he was transferred to the 19th Bomb Group (B-29 Aircraft) on the island of Guam. He was further assigned to the 28th Bomb Squadron as a maintenance officer. Are you free if thoughts just occur to you? Is alienation – as loss of a sense of belonging and subjectivity – a phenomenon of modernity? Is freedom contra-causal and spontaneous? Is it truly in human nature to be free? Are people ‘already’ free? Do you exercise your freedom in the Market? Is all of production voluntary? Is production a form of fulfillment? Is leisure (without work), then, a threat to freedom? Are you overworked and overspent? Are your desires yours? Are we accumulating ‘garbage’? Why don’t consumers go on strike? Are we biologically and socially constrained? Is there a connection between language and freedom? Are you able to put together disjoint concepts out of a context? Does language create possibilities? Can notions of freedom also be propagandized? Do you think of the mountains as Gods? Is freedom (along with the ability to act) essential for survival of the human species? Is it sufficient to think that one is free to be free? Is it necessary (?) to end Capital, as we know it, to save ourselves? Can you conceive of the end of the world? Is the future just like the past? Will we exercise our angelhood? SynTalk thinks about these & more questions using concepts from philosophy (Prof. Akeel Bilgrami, Columbia University, New York), economics (Dr. Arjun Jayadev, Azim Premji University, Bangalore), & linguistics & philosophy (Prof. Nirmalangshu Mukherji, ex-University of Delhi, New Delhi). This week we learn about a government program that offers matching funds for marketing initiatives. Who’s interested in some federal grant matching funds? Did you know there is a federal program called Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms (TAAF) that will match up to your $75,000 investment in certain initiatives including; production, information systems, management, quality and, of course, my favorite initiative, marketing. Guests: Tania Bahr-Torline & Amy Graziano, Program Managers at RMTAACRMTAAC Website: www.rmtaac.orgTAAF Website: www.taacenters.orgPhone number: 303-499-8222 Highlights: [3:30] TAAF is designed to help small and medium size manufacturers affected by foreign competition. [4:50] Amy shares the 5 criteria that a manufacturer must fulfill to be eligible for the matching funds. [6:30] Tania talks about how the grant funds can be used my manufacturers. [7:40] There is an approval process for consultants, but for the most part, the manufacturer chooses the consultant they want to work with. [9:30] Learn how much your firm can get. Maximum benefit is $75,000 and usually the funds are spread out over multiple years. [11:00] Listen to two great success stories where manufacturers who were facing stiff foreign competition and, with TAAF funds, were able to turn around their businesses. Interview Questions: Question 1: Tania, let’s start off with you, would you please give us an overview of the larger federal program, TAAF, and then how the regional offices fit in under that? Question 2: Amy, let’s talk specifics, how does a manufacturer qualify for the matching funds? Tania, what can the funds be used for? Question 3: Amy, who does the work? Does RMTAAC have specialists on staff or does the manufacturer go out and find a consultant? Question 4: Tania, I’m sure everyone is wondering, how much assistance can a firm expect to receive?  How often can a manufacturer take advantage of the program? Question 5: I’d love to hear from each of you on this one, what is your favorite success story? Amy, let’s start with you. Tania do you have a favorite success story? Amy's Takeaway: If you're interested in this program, don't rule yourself out. Let TAAF help you determine if you're eligible. Tania's Takeaway: There is another very important component of the program is a business planning phase. A lot of companies feel that planning process is as valuable, maybe more, than the money itself.
