Joel VanPatten is a comic book artist, illustrator and painter who moved, with his family, to the top of a mountain in Southern New Hampshire. Our conversation covered how he began as an artist, through his current projects, which include the comic book Jöl (pronounced yule) and Livid Comics. The esthetics of his paintings, both of still life and urban scapes, are dark and frenetic, but at the same time, draw you in. He took a moment to chat about both how he creates this style and why.He also talked about the reasoning behind the move to the mountain top and how he and his family are making adjustments to a life that aspires to be off the grid in these modern times. As always, it is fascinating to me to take a moment to look through another person's eyes and see what they see about the universe.I hope you enjoy it!And, I can't wait to get my first issue of Jöl, Livid Comic's premier issue.Joel, and Jol, can be found at www.vanpattenstudios.comTell two friends to listen this episode and tag me in the posts and I'll thank you personally! Happy New Year, Blazer Nation!  New year, new us, right??  This year I am going to lose 50 pounds, pay off all debt, quit booze, stop drinking caffeine, run a marathon, become a golf pro, cure cancer, and purchase every child a puppy dog.  Oh, who am I kidding?  I could never stop drinking caffeine - hello?  COFFEE!!  If you're anything like 92% of the population, Blazer Nation, you have follow-through issues when it comes to your resolutions. Why is it so difficult to make, keep and succeed when it comes to the goals we set for ourselves?  Perhaps it's because of our lack of planning.  Because we search for the easy way out. We lack follow through and support.  We have an inability to see the forest through the trees. Maybe we aren't willing to make a "firm purpose of amendment" (thank you, Bob Conlon).  What if the self-story we tell ourselves is in direct conflict with our goal? This week Katie and Nora hash all things resolutions and we invite you along on our journey.  Let's finally be part of the eight percent, Blazer Nation. Boundaries.  Wanna talk about 'em?  Well here it goes...  Free your mind, Blazer Nation and tune in this week to gab with the girls about boundaries.  Not to be confused with over-sharing (think - areolas), boundaries are the limits you decide work for you on how others can treat you, how others can behave around you, and what others can expect from you. You might have a boundaries problem if, you're constantly taking responsibility for other people's feelings and reactions and/or expecting others to take responsibility for your own feelings or reactions.  Sound complicated?  Not your circus, Blazer Nation.  Struggle with guilt? Anxiety? Decision making?  Sounds like a boundaries problem to us. Setting clear boundaries is a sign of physical and emotional health.  You don't need to please everyone.  You don't need to sacrifice your own comfort and well-being for the sake of anyone else's. Repeat after Nora. "No." Did you know that "no" is a complete sentence? Explanation not needed.  Stop pleasing and start living. What is compassion?  If you're like Nora, you think you know, but you're only going so far. There is a hierarchy to compassion - beginning with pity, inching towards sympathy, creeping into the empathy realm and ending with the big C.  Compassion is being willing to aid in someone else's struggle to end his or her suffering.  It's loaded, Blazer Nation.  It's easy to show compassion to those of us we love, but how can we give compassion to those people we cannot stand?  We live in a very polarizing world.  There is a lot of divisiveness around us - think politics, pandemic, social injustice, and unrest -  you smell what we're stepping in. How can we show compassion?  How can we take on the struggles of others when our own struggles can be suffocating.  Tune in this week and listen to Katie and Nora hash it out.  "Just like us," you too can follow the teachings of the Dalai Lama and practice being compassionate both with yourself and others.  Newsflash - like most areas in life, compassion is a muscle that needs to be flexed in order to grow.  Start the work here. As always, we want to hear from YOU!!  Give us the deets - how have you practiced compassion?  Follow us on Instagram at wednesdayblazernation#wednesdayblazernationCheck out our website: onwednesdayswewearblazers.comContact us thru our website or wednesdayblazernation@gmail.comTell us your stories, recommend a charity, let us know if you'd like to be a guest! The interview in SPaMCAST 66 is with Chuck Tryon.  We discussed knowledge management.  Chuck provides solid advice on knowledge management while explain why not dealing with knowledge management is a burning platform you should not ignore.  Frankly this one of the most important interviews SPaMCAST has recorded. Chuck Tryon is a nationally respected educator and popular symposium speaker.  He founded Tryon and Associates in 1986 to provide seminar training and consulting that helps organizations and individuals develop predictable and repeatable approaches to modern project management, knowledge management and business requirements.  The strategies presented in Mr. Tryon’s seminars are used by thousands of professionals in hundreds of organizations across the United States, Europe and Canada.  His client list includes many top 100 companies.Chuck and his wife, Tresa, reside in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.  They have two grown daughters, Amanda and Casey.  When not teaching, writing or attending classes at OU, Chuck tries to find time for his favorite things in life, spoiling grandchildren, playing golf and SCUBA diving … but not usually at the same time.A full bio is available at  http://bit.ly/5VNkp Contact:Email:     ChuckTryon@TryonAssoc.comWebsite: http://www.tryonassoc.comTell a friend about the Software Process and Measurement Cast and show them how to subscribe.  Let me know and I will acknowledge you on the next show!  The essay on SPaMCAST 66 is part 1 of my essay titled "Traceability: A Radical Approach Based on User Involvement".  ‘Model based software process improvement’ and ‘process discipline’ are phrases that can chill the blood of most software engineers even when uttered forty feet away.  Applied incorrectly the perceived trappings of process discipline are viewed as overhead which gets in the way of ‘real work’.  The processes that are perceived to be the most offensive to developers are those concentrated on controlling their behavior or providing oversight of their work.  When the CMMI® is interjected into the process landscape, traceability becomes one of the lightening rods typically identified in the overhead discussion.  So, avoid the lightening rod, right?  Check out the podcast and blog for the rest!Join the SPaMCAST’s community by joining the SPaMCAST Facebook page and get involved!!!!  http://tinyurl.com/62z5elThere are a number of ways to share your thoughts with SPaMCAST: •    Email SPaMCAST at spamcastinfo@gmail.com•    Voice messages can be left at 1-206-888-6111•    Twitter – www.twitter.com/tcagley•    BLOG – www.tcagley.wordpress.com•    FACEBOOK!!!!
