Escape Rooms have been all the rage over the past few years. For those that don't know, escape rooms are just that... a room you must escape from. Usually, there is a theme to an escape room, and it is up to you and whomever you're with to solve a series of puzzles in under an hour to "escape" the room. As an avid escape room hobbyist, I wondered if this concept could be applied to the classroom. Sure enough, it can! Through a variety of different platforms, teachers can use or create their own escape room right in the classroom. It encourages collaboration amongst groups, critical thinking and evaluation, and to just have fun! This concept can be used to introduce content, review content, or even teach content. My students have tried to keep the villainous Ms. G. (that's me) from pulling a Carmen Sandiego and stealing major monuments throughout Europe (World Geography), and they've tried to save Julius Caesar from his gruesome fate. The sky is the limit with these activities, not to mention it is so fun to see students engaged (and frustrated) with the content. Escape rooms can be done with physical locks or they can be done through a digital platform. I have more experience creating and using digital escape rooms than physical. There is also a website called Breakout EDU that allows teachers to create themed content right there on their website for virtual learning, as well as offering information on how to get started with in-person activities. In this episode, we sat down with Adam Bellow, co-founder, and CEO of Breakout EDU, and an EdTech entrepreneur and technologist. Adam gives his best advice for educators who are considering transitioning into EdTech, provides insight on how EdTech brands can successfully communicate with their educator audience, and discusses some of his philosophies on how to create genuine solutions for classroom problems. About Breakout EDUBreakout EDU: we unlock the love of learning through games.  Breakout Edu is a box with padlocks on it, each lock with a different academic purpose. Students work together in small groups to collaboratively unlock the box. Inside of the box, there are discussion cards based on the 4 C's. About 2 years ago, Breakout also launched a digital platform with games, a game design school and a series of course materials that allows the students to become creators. Adam expressed a huge value for student creation and student ownership as a higher level proof of learning, using what they learned in class to do something that's actually fun. Note: This interview was originally recorded on August 27, 2021  as part of the All Things Education and Marketing podcast hosted by Elana Leoni. About Adam:Adam is a dedicated educational technologist, father of two young boys. He is the CEO and Co-Founder of Breakout EDU, the immersive gaming platform that enables teachers and students to transform classrooms into places of discovery and inquiry-based learning. Previously, he served as a Presidential Innovation Fellow for the Obama White House, created several edtech learning platforms including eduTecher and eduClipper. Adam has written numerous books about educational technology and speaks internationally on the subject of education and technology. If you enjoyed this week's podcast, click here to rate us and let us know your favorite part of this episode. To make sure you don't miss future content, make sure you're subscribed to our Adam said there is one central question to every good edtech product: “what do students need most?” Instead of building out of need, Adam said some edtech brands “build for flashiness, like a lot of pitches I'm sure you've heard from an EdTech space. It's like, oh it's like this for the classroom without ever thinking did we need that in the classroom? So for Adam, the key to a good edtech founder is “being able to critically look at it and be like, will this actually matter to those kids? Will it make the product better? Will it make the experience better? Or is it just something that we've done for the sake of doing it?” With their experience in the classroom, Adam said teachers are uniquely equipped to ask those questions and use that critical eye. Adam said that, in order to have a successful marketing product, “The advice I would have is value first. Like we were talking about earlier. But just help as much as possible. And sometimes your product may not solve all of their problems. And the world of education is full of amazing voices. On your end, your job should be to elevate voices as well. And you can elevate voices that are related to the things you're passionate about.”  In reflection, Adam said “I think Chris Lehmann had the quote from years ago, “It needs to be ubiquitous, necessary, and invisible.” And like oxygen, right. That was his quote, like oxygen. And it's true. I mean that's still exactly true today. It is not about the technology. Every kid has, most of the students have access to devices, some multiple devices. And as the devices get more and more impressive, and the kids are doing more things with the device on their own, it' not about the flashy toy and it's more about what we can get these students to do with that. focusing on the product, not on the how to or the technical side of it.”

How can educators move from classroom learning that is unconnected from students' lived experiences and create opportunities for students to use their skills and knowledge to lead their learning? In this edWeb podcast, educator and researcher Julie Stern and edtech expert and educator Maria Arfanakis discusses how schools can shift their focus from teaching to the standards to teaching for learning transfer. The presenters share more about what learning transfer is and how educators can use it to design equitable learning experiences that are meaningful and engaging. Educators learn how the right instructional moves, such as discussion-focused collaborative games, create a perfect conduit to harness students' prior learning and experiences, move students toward expertise, and improve students' social-emotional learning. The conversation addresses the practical steps educators can take to move from a teacher-controlled to a student-led classroom, how leaders can encourage their staff to prioritize the instructional behaviors that maximize student learning while preparing students to tackle the complex challenges in their careers, and how centralizing learning transfer has the power to transform schools into vibrant laboratories of learning and problem solving. This edWeb podcast is of interest to teachers, librarians, and school and district leaders of all grade levels. Breakout EDU Increase lesson review engagement with Breakout EDU games!

“Julie is authentically passionate about raising awareness of our industries' critical issues and teaching academic standard in the process. It's really a remarkable approach to education.” - Lori   When it comes to innovation in the classroom, 6th-grade teacher Julie Cates, 2015 AG in the Classroom Teacher of the Year, is an inspiration. While she and her students live in Central Valley, a region considered a major producer of stone and citrus fruits, nut products, and the #2 dairy producer in the US, they are also in a food desert. Most of her students live in rural areas, and mini-marts stocked with convenience foods become the main staple for the dinner tables. Many of the children in Julie's classroom come from low-income families and are classified as Title 1 students, and some had never eaten even the most common fresh produce. One student had never tried a fresh strawberry.     “There are students who have never tried a strawberry, or romaine lettuce, or green beans. When they can help make the food, they have buy-in, and enjoy trying new things.“ - Julie   Julie has been a follower of the Produce Moms and subscribed utilized the Produce Challenge to revolutionize the way her students experience fresh produce. Each week Julie focuses on a new item of produce through her Find Your Favorite campaign. Not only does she allow students to help prepare the food, and eat the food, she incorporates the items to help meet academic standards through educational activities. She and a colleague have developed a Breakout EDU game to help educate the students about invasive pest species that affect the crops in their region. Julie leverages the critical issues in the industry to students become more invested in a local problem that affects the global market. The work she is doing is changing the eating habits of her students and empowering them to live healthier lives.   “We are educating students on a local problem that affects a global market. We really want the students to become citizen scientists.” - Julie   If you are ready to incorporate more fresh produce into your life, it may be time for you to take the Produce Challenge! Receive weekly emails with recipes, produce tips, and tutorials to make the challenge easy. The Produce Challenge is a simple way to reach that goal of eating healthier in the new year.   If you are interested in the ways Julie has seamlessly incorporated produce into her academic lessons, follow her on Twitter (@cates_julie) or find her on Instagram (@teachercates). In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we discuss Augmented Reality with Metaverse CEO, Dmitry Shapiro. Together, we explore how Augmented Reality is being used in and out of the classrooms and learn where this amazing technology will be taking us as we head into the future. Follow our PodcastThe TeacherCast Educational Broadcasting Network | http://www.twitter.com/teachercast (@TeacherCast) Follow our HostJeff Bradbury | http://www.twitter.com/jeffbradbury (@JeffBradbury) About our GuestDmitry Shapiro is CEO and Co-Founder of GoMeta (Metaverse), an augmented reality platform. Before Metaverse, Dmitry founded three companies (in network security, online video, social networking), raised $100 million in venture capital, tried to bring MySpace back from the dead (as CTO of music), and spent four years at Google working on a social graph, content discovery, and identity. The Metaverse AR platform makes it easy for non-techies to create augmented reality. While it has applications across many industries, K-12 teachers were the first to embrace Metaverse, and it is being used in thousands of classrooms across the world. About Metaversehttp://gometa.io/ (Metaverse) is an Augmented Reality platform that makes it easy for teachers and students to create amazing interactive experiences without having to code. Thousands of teachers are building all kinds of interactive curriculum, including educational games, stories, puzzles, challenges, scavenger hunts, and https://medium.com/@Metaverseapp/you-can-create-magic-in-the-classroom-951d068f365c (more). The most popular thing teachers are building are Breakout EDU-style challenges in Augmented Reality. Breakout Experiences can be built in under 15 minutes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkCXRQndkgg&t (Here's a tutorial)). Not only have teachers been building Metaverse Experiences for their students, they are having students build experiences themselves. Metaverse is great at teaching the logic behind computer programming, allowing students to build things they can see, use, and play with immediately.
