Eleanor Roosevelt is undisputedly one of America's most influential First Ladies. She used the office to promote international initiatives that stabilized global peace after the hellish destruction of World War Two, doing such things as securing the passage of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. But one thing few know is that for 10 days the First Lady went missing. In August of 1943, Eleanor was not attending to her domestic duties at the White House, in fact, she was nowhere to be found. Later, Americans would read in newspapers that Eleanor's whereabouts had been discovered—she was on the other side of the world. In an unprecedented mission which only a handful of First Ladies since have ever attempted, Eleanor's assignment was to go undercover into a battle zone and report back, firsthand, what America's servicemen and women were facing... and bring secret information back to the Oval Office. At a time when commercial air travel was unrefined (transcontinental flights took at least 20 hours and involved several fueling stops) and war was still active in the South Pacific, Eleanor faced dangers every day to complete her secret mission and boost troop morale.Today's guest is Shannon McKenna Schmidt, author of The First Lady of World War II: Eleanor Roosevelt's Daring Journey to the Frontlines and Back. She shares the largely untold story of Eleanor's top-secret mission to the Pacific theater that had ripple effects throughout the 20th century. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement

In the 1980s, the Imagineers at WED completely redesigned Fantasyland. But was it made into what Walt always wanted, or is there more to the story? We like to think of Pinocchio as a happy, easily-persuaded little puppet who just couldn't help but lie and get into trouble even though he was accompanied by Jiminy, his faithful conscience. But that's not who they originally were (not even close!). In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we discover where Disney found the story of Pinocchio, how they altered the story and the characters to suit their purposes, why the film was a box-office failure, and how Gustaf Tenggren contributed to the development of both the film and the Disney Parks attraction. On this week's show, Disneyland veterans, David and Ronn dive into several sizzling Disney topics. Galaxy's Edge: Legacy & Original Characters & Timelines?! Portfolio Creative Executive and Studio Leader at Walt Disney Imagineering , Scott Trowbridge, announced some interesting new details at Star Wars Celebration this week including the exciting additions of legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand. He shared with us that "Walt Disney Imagineering is committed to the long history of Batuu and the collection of characters who inhabit the outpost. Including legacy characters, original characters, and new and future characters from the ever-expanding galaxy of Star Wars storytelling. While we as visitors may be able to experience different stories throughout Star Wars history, the characters on Batuu cannot. They will remain in their specific story and timeline and won't intersect with other characters or stories that would not be appropriate for them.” Legacy characters? Original characters? Characters cannot get more "legacy" and "original" than Luke, Leia, Han, Lando and Darth Vader- will Disney storytelling magic really bring them to Black Spire outpost!? Will the next two quarters make a difference in how much longer Bob Chapek remains CEO? What is the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (S.E.A.) universe? Which Disneyland attraction would we like to become a part of S.E.A.?Plus, we remember, celebrate, and honor Up, Three Little Pigs, New Fantasyland, Pinocchio's Daring Journey, it's a small world, and Walt Disney World in this week in Disney history. All this and the big reveal of our Top 5 Places to Relax and People Watch in the Parks, and more!

This week on an all new episode of Drunk Distory presents ‘The Dark Ride' we head on over to Anaheim, to find the little balsam boy hiding in blacklit plywood flats. This is our pleasure island; not a night club strewn wasteland in central Florida, but a dark ride, where classic golden age nostalgia meets bottom line budgets. So if you have ever wished upon a star for a fast pass or dining rez, you are ready to join us on a mad cap adventure where the story's villains are as numerous as the donkeys, and our love of a disappearing blue fairy is only outweighed by our love of Stromboli. That's right, we ain't lying. Go get your strings cut, cause were going all out on Pinocchio's Daring Journey! The ride that tells all little pleasure seeking boys n' girls, that if you're into candy and cigars, you may be turned into a donkey and forced to work the salt mines. Will Pinocchio, Jiminy and Geppetto get their happily ever after at the top of Drink That Ride, or will it all sink to the bottom in the belly of a whale? There's only one way to find out!

http://www.attractionchecklist.com - John and I head to Disneyland to ride the classic Fantasyland Dark Ride, Pinocchio's Daring Journey!  Recorded on December 2, 2018. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. Let’s head to Fantasyland in Disneyland to ride the classic attraction Pinocchio’s Daring Journey!  Disneyland’s website describes the attraction by saying, “Relive the classic adventures of the wooden puppet who dreamed of becoming a real boy.”  There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and the thrill level describes the ride as being a slow ride that is dark, loud and scary. Before we skip school to become actors, here are five fast facts about Pinocchio’s Daring Journey. 1. Though this attractions feels like a classic, Disneyland Opening Day attraction, it actually opened at Disneyland on May 23, 1983. 2.  The outside of the attraction is based on concept art that artist Gustaf Tengren did for the movie Pinicchio for Stromboli’s theatre before production decided to make Stromboli a traveling performer. 3. Before you head inside to ride this attraction, take a look at the roof of the building and see if you can spot the weather vane in the shape of Monster the Whale.  It’s a little warning of things to come. 4. Pinocchio’s Daring Journey was the first attraction created by Disney to use holographic imagery which appears in the hand held mirror Lampwick is holding when he begins turning into a donkey. 5. The Blue Fairy that appears at the end of the attraction using the classic Pepper’s Ghost illusion.  The same illusion used in the Grand Hall scene of the Haunted Mansion. Now it’s time to wish upon a star and ride Pinocchio’s Daring Journey.  Along for the ride today is John B. deHaas and after we ride we’ll give you our thoughts on this attraction. This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we experience Pinocchio’s Daring Journey.
