KEY TAKEAWAYS In nature, in my childhood, I marvel at the seasonality, the way life seems to fit together, nothing seems to go to waste, it's utilised in some way, shape or form. Even in times of drought things still grow. From that childhood experience I started considering what is the purpose of business, so I went to study economics which is the study of scarcity. The universe is not scarce, it's infinitely abundant, I wanted to study abundance and nature is abundant. I took the implication from that to how I run my businesses. There is no such thing that exists in real life as a free-market economy in the way that most people experience business. There's restraints, guardrails, prohibitions, nature is truly the only free-market economy: When it's left untouched it does what it's supposed to do, which is grow and distribute goods and services for the consumption of those aspects of nature that need it. Compassion is predicated and organised around connection, it's literally impossible for me to behave compassionately towards something or someone unless I feel emotionally connected to them. It informs the decisions that I make and my behaviours. This comes from being conscious that your business touches many more people than just your board and shareholders and that your decisions have ripple effects that affect more than just the bottom line. One of the catalysts for a move to utopia is to define in people's minds what the purpose of a business is. It's not to make money – that's important to stay in business – but the purpose of business is to enhance the likelihood of thriving for the people that come in contact with my service or product. Here are the highlights of this episode: 1:24 Blaine's ideal Client: I love that question; because for me, it's actually morph. It started out with large enterprises. I'd work with some of the largest organizations, me and my company, some of the largest companies in the planet. Mostly that focus has been initially on 'how do you implement a strategic client' or 'strategic initiatives'. Big shifts, big directional juxtaposition from what it was. How do you get people on board? Kind of like rolling up against the queen Mary and kicking it in a bow saying 'turn, turn, turn'. It's an interesting preposition. Where we at today, is really focusing more on the small to midsize companies. My ideal is an organization that've gotten right around between 100-300 people. And I say that selfishly because I can see movement at that point in time, with that size of an organization. And there's a reason for that; 80% of the world's economy is driven by these small to midsize companies. And the big enterprise are the ones getting all the press. But the ones that really make a difference are these small to midsize organization. And having them actually percolating well (running well) is what I like to be working towards and what I'm actually directing my company to work closely today. 3:03 Problem Blaine helps solve: I will reference Gallop on this. Gallop is an annual poll employee engagement and the needle has not move for at least 25 years of I'm aware of that poll being done. And what is shows consistently which is globally is that between 85-87% of employees worldwide are disengaged from the work that they're doing. Now, they show up, they go through the motions, but that disengagement has had an enormous cost to it. And this is one of the reasons why small start-up organizations (5-20 people) that's not so much an issue, but you start getting into a 'larger than a 2 pizza' organization, I'm quoting Jeff Bezos here. People started to become disconnected from the organization's mission, from its founding purpose and soul. That problem has a cost, and that's what we solve; that's actually what we work towards making possible is high-level of 'emotional engagement' in what the organization is trying to make it happen. 4:30Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Blaine: Symptomatically, what tends to appear is people waiting to be told what to do. That's probably the most glaring example. People are highly creative, they're innovative. The human spirit seeks to express and it seeks to grow but that doesn't seem to be the case in many organizations. And that's that higher hierarchical structure. Reporting relationships - "don't move until I tell you that you can move"... "I'm the boss" and it's a mindset! "I'm the boss and I'm supposed to let you know...

Gallop is an annual poll employee engagement and the needle has not move for at least 25 years of I'm aware of that poll being done. And what is shows consistently which is globally is that between 85-87% of employees worldwide are disengaged from the work that they're doing. Now, they show up, they go through the motions, but that disengagement has had an enormous cost to it. And this is one of the reasons why small start-up organizations (5-20 people) that's not so much an issue, but you start getting into a 'larger than a 2 pizza' organization, I'm quoting Jeff Bezos here. People started to become disconnected from the organization's mission, from its founding purpose and soul. That problem has a cost, and that's what we solve; that's actually what we work towards making possible is high-level of 'emotional engagement' in what the organization is trying to make it happen. 4:30Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Blaine: Symptomatically, what tends to appear is people waiting to be told what to do. That's probably the most glaring example. People are highly creative, they're innovative. The human spirit seeks to express and it seeks to grow but that doesn't seem to be the case in many organizations. And that's that higher hierarchical structure. Reporting relationships - "don't move until I tell you that you can move"... "I'm the boss" and it's a mindset! "I'm the boss and I'm supposed to let you know...

I met Angela through the longest hug I’ve ever shared with a stranger (more on that on the show)… standing by a river, in the mountains, under a tent, listening to Blaine Bartlett speak about compassionate capitalism. Relationships are fundamental. The quality of our life is equal to the quality of our relationships. Every relationship has ups and downs, peaks and valleys, and having the skill set to build relationships gives you the ability to create and sustain high-quality relationships. Blaine Bartlett, CEO and president of the consulting firm Avatar Resources, Inc. says the average length of most of his client engagements runs about a decade, which in the consulting business is crazy. He says it's all about the qualitative side of the work that he does with the folks. Blaine shares that compassionate capitalism is all about the ability to build sustainable relationships and focusing on the area of conflict. In his life in business, he discovered early on that an organization is a collection of people that are in relationship. There are interpersonal relationships that people have with each other and the companies and businesses. There are relationships with vision, with mission, with values. There are relationships that people have with their chairs, with their desks. Everything you encounter in an organization has a relationship component to it. Blaine says the success of an organization, whether it's a family or a business, is going to be predicated on how successful the relationships are actually functioning.
