Esa-Pekka Salonen took over the helm of the San Francisco Symphony in 2020 from Michael Tilson Thomas. Both men have had a major impact on symphonic music in California, and Salonen is one of the three guiding figures – with the LA Phil's Gustavo Dudamel and the San Diego Symphony's Rafael Payare – behind the California Festival, a statewide celebration of music that launched in November. James Jolly spoke to Salonen at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco following an afternoon concert, as part of the California Festival, in November.

What's The Matter With Me? Podcast

On the road again Welcome to What's The Matter With Me? Podcast S6, Ep. 45 “San Diego Trip” In this episode, I'm on the road again for the first time in what feels like a long time. My wife and I flew to San Diego to attend her company's year-end holiday party. For the first time, I flew with my wheelchair. I got frisked and swabbed lot, but I didn't miss my flights, so it evened out and I made it home in one piece. It was not without hiccups, but we managed to have a pretty good trip overall, and I'm looking forward to traveling again in tyhe future. Booze Only Yankee Swap IV It's Swap Time We came back to town and had the Booze Only Yankee Swap. The next day, we took the kids to see the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra's holiday concert. There's some sound effects in this episode, like a plane taking off and some other stuff, but I tried to keep it to an absolute minimum, I swear. Shout-outs Shout-outs to Empress Nami who wrote in to say, "I listened to WTMWM on my commute in. The ending....so many sound effects! I was laughing so much." Sometimes I'm just communing with Roy, who taught me how to do audio production. Roy always encouraged me to use more sound effects. Hey MOMA, do you have the what's the matter with me? Podcast? Forking Hell They think I only ordered one fork Descended From Royalty I took the kids to eat at Taco Bell and we met a stranger San Diego Trip We flew to San Diego I made a recording just outside the airport terminal At The Company Holiday Party I sat down at the table for the holiday party and it turned out to be the adult table because the CSO sat across the table and the CEO sat down next to me. Which was kind of *gulp*-inducing but they were nice people and they listened to me when I told them how great my wife was. The people at the company have an impressive track record of creating medicines. I saw the lab and it was a big glassed in structure at the core of a long rectangular one story building in San Diego I flew back, and they swabbed and frisked me again. The TSA guy said to clean my brace with rubbing alcohol next time. Our Holiday Party ABV 30%+ Booze Only Yankee Swap 1980s STYLE Someone brought Peach Brandy to the Booze Only Yankee Swap and that created a minor kerfuffle. It was the fourth time we've had this party. GARBLED FLYER The graphic design program spat out this garbled flyer and we can post it here because it doesn't list our address, or anything at all, really- it just says, "in" over and over. Trading Up I put in a bottle of Beefeater gin and I ended up with a bottle of Don Julio tequila. My wife traded a bottle of Cazadores for a bottle of Glenfiddich so it was a pretty good exchange for both of us and we very nearly felt bad about it. Someone brought peach Brandy to the booze only Yankee swap and that created a minor kerfluffle Lebovitz spiced nuts & pretzels were a hit. Next time, spicier The hot dogs San Francisco SymphonyYouth Orchestra Holiday Concert We took the kids to see the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra at Davies Symphony Hall. I used my chair and it was totally lucky that we got a handicap space just two blocks away. But, we hadn't charged the chair. We were there to see Kaito play the violin and we had pretty good seats in the first balcony at stage right. We had a good view looking down over the orchestra, and from our seats you look the conductor in the face as they played.

This week, we present an archival City Arts & Lectures program recorded in 2010 with the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter, the Reverend Mpho Tutu, in conversation with Roy Eisenhardt. Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu dedicated his life to fighting for basic civil and human rights for all. Born a teacher's son in South Africa, Tutu followed his father's path and taught for several years before studying theology.  From there, he became the first Black general secretary of the South African Council of Churches, and then the Archbishop of Cape Town.  In 1997, Nelson Mandela asked him to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission after the abolition of apartheid.   Archbishop Tutu presided over the ordination of his daughter Mpho Tutu into the Anglican priesthood in 2004.  This program, recorded at Davies Symphony Hall on March 17, 2010, was just after the publication of a book they wrote together, “Made for Goodness, And Why This Makes All the Difference”.   Desmond Tutu died on December 26, 2021, at the age of 90.

Nick Platoff is a Trombone player with the San Francisco Symphony. In this episode Nick, who is a Global Shaper just like Julian, talks about the role music & love played in his childhood - and how Burning Man changed his life.  Nick is committed to harnessing the power of music to bring joy and healing to the world.  In September 2016, he joined the San Francisco Symphony as Associate Principal Trombone. Since then, he has had the pleasure of performing over 300 concerts with his first-class colleagues at their home in Davies Symphony Hall and many of the world's great concert halls.  Outside of the symphony work Nick loves making music whenever and wherever possible: "I spend a lot of time composing and recording in my home studio, teaching locally and as guest faculty at the National Orchestral Institute, and performing solo with my loop station and as a member of the Miami-based Nu Deco Ensemble. Since I started this segment of my weekly broadcasts, it's been rare that I have just featured prerecorded interviews. I guess I will just have to write the stories :-) That said, this week I will feature a segment from an interview with Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell, a member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, who performed this past weekend at SFJAZZ. Yes, they were marvelous! Dressed in lovely black flared skirts, some of the women in boots, the tops jackets, tunics or two-piece affairs. They took us on an American journey, a soul journey, a cleansing and thoughtprovoking often painful journey during the concert at the lovely Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. There were empty seats in the orchestra. I don't know what it looked like in the balcony--it would have been nice if people were invited down to fill in the space, but it was full nonetheless. The extended set, which began late to accommodate those of us wading through the Love Fest ending just outside the doors on the streets of San Francisco's Civic Center, took many selections from the groups 35 year old songbook as well as their latest CD: Experience 101. The concert was co-sponsored by the San Francisco Links, an organization that offers scholarships to girls for college. When I went backstage I met a few of the singers and other fans, some whom I knew. I think I danced back to BART. It was a great evening! After the prerecorded interview, I spoke to Tracey Nails-Bell, owner of A Diamond in the Rough, an image consultancy which works with women reentering society, others who have economic hardships, struggling single female headed households, who want to do something with their lives, but might need guidance and support getting there.

This week we will have a live interview with musician/composer, Wallace Roney, who will be opening the San Francisco Jazz Festival, as a part of the "Miles From India" project. Roney, a protege of Davis, will offer listeners rare insight into the artist, the project and his own creative process. Last year, the concert was a hit and sold out quickly, so it has been moved to a larger venue, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Grove and Van Ness). Visit www.sfjazz.org From the archives will feature rare audio interviews from artists and revolutionary thinkers I've interviewed in the past ten or so years (2008-1998). Each show will be just an hour, but in that hour these artists and culture workers will share perspectives on life I treasure as I'm sure you will.
