But what if that story is incomplete? Or what if it's even wrong? My guest today, Professor Niayesh Afshordi, is a professor of astrophysics at the Perimeter Institute and the University of Waterloo. He and his colleague Bill Halpern argue that the real battle in science is over the mysteries of singularities, those points where our equations collapse and space, time and physics itself seem to break down. In a new book, Battle of the Big Bang, they take us inside the fight to understand whether the Big Bang was truly the beginning of it all, or whether it was just one chapter in a far stranger cosmic saga. Have you ever heard of a Skinner box?  BF Skinner was a behavioral psychologist who felt humans have no free will and can be controlled through an algorithmic like reward schedule that installs an impulsive behavior.  He believe we should dispose of the fiction called "free will".  In this episode I make a nuanced argument against Skinner's oversimplified view of human's will. Let's discuss why I believe we do in fact have free will, but only when we are truly conscious.  But to express this point, I rely on Sir Roger Penrose, Yuval Noah Harari and more. Let's explore the consequential territory of modern civilization adopting a "BF Skinner" approach.  I hope all of you are navigating these potentially confusing times with grace and gratitude. I really think that's the most obvious solution we have in front of us. Prepare for the unknown and have gratitude as you do it. If you're interested in learning filmmaking or storytelling, visit:  www.souloffilm.com

We are used to think about the universe as a structure which started with a Big Bang and then expanded. Sir Roger Penrose, who received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics, has developed an alternative theory of the universe based on Einstein's Theory of General Relativity which is called "Conformal Cyclic Cosmology". In this new model we don't have one single Big Bang, but an iteration of infinite cycles (or aeons) of expansion and cooling, each beginning with a “big bang” and ending in a “big crunch”. Science Journalist Jens Degett interviews Professor Niels Obers, Director of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (NORDITA) and professor at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, on Roger Penrose's theory and how much evidence is needed in order to change the general view of a central paradigm which is written in our school textbooks. What if Penrose is right? What consequences or perspectives will it have for us?

Did consciousness exist before life? Could such a counter-intuitive idea, in fact, be the answer to the hard problem of consciousness?Join anaesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff as he puts forward his theory that consciousness came before the origin of life on Earth, using quantum mechanics and his research with Sir Roger Penrose to support his claim. Stuart is a professor at the University of Arizona, and he is known for his studies of consciousness and his controversial contention that consciousness originates from quantum states in neural microtubules.

Can you be a serious scientist and believe in God, and even believe in miracles?   Tom Rudelius never thought much about God until his brother, a new convert to Christianity, challenged him to explore faith. Tom, now a rising young theoretical physicist based at Durham University in the UK made a journey to unexpected faith, through subsequent doubt and anxiety, and ultimately to a firmer, life-transforming allegiance to Jesus. Phil and Tom wrestle with creation and cosmic origins, the problem of evil and suffering, the compatibility of miracles with science and the plausibility of Jesus' resurrection. Phil Halper is an atheist, and Youtuber who's interviewed leading physicists from Stephen Hawking, Sir Roger Penrose to Alan Guth for his YouTube series Before the Big Bang. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and published several papers in peer reviewed journals on the Problem of Animal Suffering and has a new film on the subject which features other leading atheists such as Peter Singer and Alex O'Connor.   Taking on Phil is Tom Rudelius author of 'Chasing proof, finding science'. Fresh from post doctoral research at UC Berkeley Tom is now Assistant Professor, Mathematical & Theoretical Particle Physics at Durham University, UK. Tom completed his undergraduate work at Cornell, earned a doctorate in physics at Harvard, and has conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. His research focuses on string theory, quantum field theory, and early universe cosmology.   Phil Halper https://www.youtube.com/@skydivephil Tom Rudelius Website | Twitter | Instagram  • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate

Do humans project mathematical order onto nature? Or was it there all along? On this ID The Future, host Andrew McDiarmid concludes his conversation with Dr. Melissa Cain Travis about her recent book Thinking God's Thoughts: Johannes Kepler and the Miracle of Cosmic Comprehensibility. In Part 3, we look at how Kepler's ideas and work can inform the scientific enterprise today. Many scientists recognize the mystery of cosmic comprehensibility, including such respected voices as Albert Einstein, Sir Roger Penrose, and Paul Davies. Materialists remain agnostic or put it down to chance. But there's a more satisfying explanation, says Travis. "Centuries ago, Kepler already held the trump card. Science itself...can't be explained within the framework of scientific materialism." Genuine human rationality - the very thinking that helped fuel the enormous success of the natural sciences - would not exist if a naturalistic account of the human mind were correct. To get an intellectually satisfying answer for the cosmic comprehensibility we enjoy as humans, we have to think outside the materialist box. Travis explains how we can do that using Kepler's tripartite harmony of archetype, copy, and image. It turns out Keplerian natural theology is more robust than ever before and can help us make sense of the mysteries of our age, including the multiverse, the limits of AI, transhumanism, and more. This is Part 3 of a 3-part discussion. Source

Watch the video of Sir Roger's lecture here: https://youtu.be/smUYz9ti_bA Sir Roger Penrose, the celebrated English mathematician and physicist as well as author of numerous books, including The Emperor's New Mind: Concerning Computers, Minds, and the Laws of Physics, joined the Clarke Center to share a talk titled "Fashion, Faith and Fantasy and the Big Questions in Modern Physics" based on his book of the same name. In his book Fashion, Faith and Fantasy and the Big Questions in Modern Physics, Roger Penrose argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology. * **String theory** is a branch of theoretical physics that attempts to unify all of the fundamental forces of nature in a single framework. However, string theory requires the existence of six extra hidden dimensions, which Penrose argues is not physically plausible. He also cautions that the fashionable nature of string theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. * **Quantum mechanics** is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. However, Penrose argues that quantum mechanics is based on a number of unproven assumptions, and that it may not be applicable to all physical systems. * **Cosmology** is the study of the origin, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. Penrose argues that many of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. Penrose concludes by arguing that fashion, faith, and fantasy should be replaced by physics: theories which, although they may be completely wrong, can at least be tested in the foreseeable future and discarded if they disagree with experiment or investigated further if not excluded by the results. The book has been praised by some physicists for its insights into the current state of physics, while others have criticized it for its negative tone and its lack of constructive proposals. Consciousness can be created by a brain and there could still be an afterlife. How could that work? Sea Kimbrell has a JD and a PhD in biology, and is a former Professor of Biology. Sea decided to leave academia because he wanted to spend his time thinking about the big questions in life, not where his next grant was coming from. He currently writes from his home in Kansas. He is author of "Atheists in the Afterlife: Eight Paths to Life After Death Without God." As an atheist from a secular family he always wondered what could happen after death. Using his knowledge as a scientist, he realized there ARE ways we can survive death that has nothing to do with god, heaven, or religion. While there has been lots of scientific research on survival of consciousness, Sea takes a completely unique approach to this question. Theories such as a Block Universe related to how time is an illusion and the simulation theory are some of the theories that play into his assessment. Sea and Liz discuss how as two atheists, who think there could be an afterlife, their thoughts are alike and how they differ. Episode 27 of Paranormal Stories. This week the books are 'Soul to God: A Soul's Journey Over Many Lives' by Michael Kramer and 'Alien In The Mirror: Extraterrestrial Contact Theories & Evidence' by Randall Fitzgerald.Randall Fitzgerald 'Alien In The Mirror: Extraterrestrial Contact Theories & Evidence'For independent-minded readers, those who want all of the theories and supporting evidence to make up their own minds, Alien in the Mirror brings refreshing clarity and sanity to a topic long shrouded in smoke and mirror confusion.Encyclopedic in its scope and mind-expandingly rich in its detail, this book is destined to be a classic, written by an investigative reporter, Randall Fitzgerald, who has studied the alien contact phenomenon for over five decades. All aspects of this controversial subject are comprehensively covered—ancient astronaut theories, UFOs and UFO occupants, contactees and abductees, the ideas of skeptics and debunkers, and the SETI science program and its detractors. Each of the five sections open with new findings and stunning revelations from the author's own thorough investigations.Alien in the Mirror is quite literally a condensation of information from hundreds of books. It represents the most authoritative and complete guide to the realm of extraterrestrial contact, theories and evidence, ever compiled. It presents a fascinating definitive history of the phenomenon, giving readers objective and essential information that challenges us to reexamine what we think we know about our consensus reality. As the legendary theorist and scientist Jacques F. Vallée writes in his Foreword to Alien in the Mirror: “This book will stand as testimony to a well-traveled road of investigation and wonder. We should acknowledge it with gratitude, not only for its neat classification of complex events, but for the hope it gives us of a long-delayed, much welcome re-awakening of the true spirt of science after seventy years of slumber.”BioRandall Fitzgerald's ten books (and more than 50 books as a ghostwriter) have been pioneering explorations of a wide variety of topics, reflecting his diverse interests and an insatiable curiosity cultivated by 35 years as a newspaper and magazine journalist. For two decades he was a Roving Editor for Reader's Digest and also wrote investigative feature articles for The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. He began his journalism career at 19, as a general assignment reporter for The Tyler Morning Telegraph, in Tyler, Texas. While in journalism school at the University of Texas at Austin, he worked as a political reporter in the state capitol bureau of The Houston Post and spent a semester as a Congressional Fellow in Washington, D.C., working as press secretary to a U.S. Congressman. In August 1974, the week that Richard Nixon resigned as President, he became an investigative reporter for newspaper syndicated columnist Jack Anderson, in Washington, D.C. He received a grant from the Fund for Investigative Journalism in 1975 to investigate the Mafia and CIA connections of the publisher of The National Enquirer by going undercover as a reporter for the tabloid. His first book contract came from Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster, based on his Enquirer investigation. His second book appeared in 1979, from Macmillan, The Complete Book of Extraterrestrial Encounters, the cover of which was immortalized in Ron Howard's extraterrestrial-themed film Cocoon. During 1978-80, he co-edited Second Look magazine, devoted to articles about the search for extraterrestrial life, the nature of consciousness, and the origins of civilization. He edited articles from some of the biggest names in science and science fiction---Isaac Asimov, Stanislaw Lem, Sir Fred Hoyle, Paul Davies, Sir Roger Penrose. In 2003 and 2004, he was a Senior Editor of Phenomena magazine, founded by former Hollywood studio executive Jeff Sagansky. Two of his books, Lucky You! (2004, Citadel/Kensington) and The Hundred Year Lie (2006, Penguin/Dutton) were Amazon.com bestsellers. Lucky You! was the first book to examine the link between intuition and luck in games of chance and got distribution in Spanish, Japanese, and Korean editions. The Hundred Year Lie, about the impact of synthetic chemicals on human health, was also published by Beijing University Press in China, where it has been a perennial seller.Based on his Lucky You! book, he was selected in 2005 as the media master of ceremonies for the 100th anniversary celebration of the founding of the city of Las Vegas, on behalf of the Fremont Street Experience, a collection of 10 casinos, including the Golden Nugget, along with the city of Las Vegas, giving live television interviews to dozens of local television stations nationwide. He has been a guest on ABC's The View, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Dr. Mehmet Oz Show, The Michael Smerconish Show, Court TV, CBS' 48 Hours, ABC's 20/20, BBC and PBS Radio, and hundreds of other television and radio shows, including four appearances on The Coast-to-Coast radio show with George Noory.https://alieninthemirror.com/https://www.amazon.com/Alien-Mirror-Extraterrestrial-Theories-Evidence-ebook/dp/B09X874R4P/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1649265119&sr=1-4Michael Kramer 'Soul to God: A Soul's Journey Over Many Lives'At 12 years of age, a powerful spiritual force lifted me out of my body into a world of extreme light, profound love, and bliss. My life goal became to understand and duplicate that experience at will. Guided by an inner presence I began my life study of Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Zen, Taoist and New Age thought in search of answers. At 13, memories began surfacing of my past life as a Tibetan Buddhist Lama, who taught his students the aggressive, dispassionate sport of debate, to logically challenge everyone, including oneself. Challenging religious dogma did not endear me to the Jesuit Brothers at my all-boys, Catholic High School. I was labeled a rebel who challenged religious logic and authority. Thus began my life path and conflict, rejecting traditional thought in search of an all-inclusive wisdom that made sense—that included all religions and sciences, and led to my goal of God Realization. Soul to God is the story of my Soul's journey over many lifetimes, of the miracles and revelations that led to the Divine.BioMichael R. Kramer spent 34 years as a spiritual leader, teacher, public speaker and spiritual counselor. He retired from his business in international graphic design, to focus on supporting the planetary evolution taking place. Michael is living in San Diego California. Soul to God is his first book.https://www.amazon.com/Soul-God-Souls-Journey-Lives-ebook/dp/B0B46HTH13/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1655324756&sr=8-1https://soultogod.com/https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

A conversation with Nobel Prize Winner and renowned mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose and anesthesiologist Dr. Stuart Hameroff about consciousness and quantum mechanics. Sir Roger Penrose and Dr. Stuart Hameroff have tackled one of the most vexing problems in science -- how does consciousness work? Their theories of consciousness were selected by the Templeton Foundation for study. We will discuss Is the brain a sophisticated computer or an intuitive thinking device? Following on from their conference in Tucson which pitted Integrated Information Theory (IIT) against Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR), Sir Roger Penrose OM and Stuart Hameroff discuss the current state of theories that might explain human consciousness and objections to them from FQXI and others. Sir Roger Penrose describe examples of ‘non-computability' in human consciousness, thoughts and actions such as the way we evaluate particular chess positions which cast doubt on ‘Turing' computation as a complete explanation of brain function. As a source of non-computability, Roger discuss his ‘objective reduction' (‘OR') self-collapse of the quantum wavefunction which is a potential resolution for the ‘measurement problem' in quantum mechanics, and a mechanism for non-computable physics. Dr. Stuart Hameroff reviews neuronal and biophysical aspects of Orch OR, in which ‘orchestrated' quantum vibrations occur among entangled brain microtubules and evolve toward Orch OR threshold and consciousness. The nature, feasibility, decoherence times and evidence for quantum vibrations in microtubules, their role and correlation with consciousness, effects upon them of anesthetic gases and psychedelic drug molecules will be discussed, along with Orch OR criticisms and predictions of microtubule quantum vibrations as therapeutic targets for mental and cognitive disorders.
