Consciousness is one of the most fundamental aspects of our existence, but it remains barely understood, even defined. Across the world scholars of many disciplines - philosophy, science, social science, theology - are joined on a quest to understand this phenomenon.Tune into one of the more original and controversial thinkers at the forefront of consciousness research, Stuart Hameroff, as he presents his ideas. Hameroff is an anaesthesiologist who, alongside Roger Penrose, proposes that the source of consciousness is structural, produced from a certain shape in our brain. He expands on this, and much more (such as evolution), in this talk. Andrés Gómez Emilsson, director of the Qualia Research Institute and a pioneering researcher in the mathematical study of consciousness, explores the nature of awareness from both philosophical and scientific angles. He recounts his journey that led to founding the Qualia Research Institute—aimed at reducing suffering and enhancing experience. He discusses the transformative potential of psychedelics, the view of the self as a series of experiences, and how sensory resonance ("impedance matching") shapes our awareness. Stuart Hameroff MD is Professor of Anesthesiology and Psychology, and Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Hameroff became interested in intelligent behavior of microtubules, protein lattices which organize activities within living cells. Hameroff and colleagues developed theories of microtubules as self-organizing molecular computers. In the 1990s Hameroff teamed with Sir Roger Penrose on the controversial Penrose-Hameroff "Orch OR" model of consciousness based on quantum computing in brain neuronal microtubules, a notion bolstered by recent evidence. Hameroff also organizes the biennial interdisciplinary conferences, The Science of Consciousness Conference. The Science of Consciousness (‘TSC') conference is the world's longest running inter-disciplinary gathering on the study of consciousness, the nature of existence, and our place in the universe. In 2025 TSC will be in Barcelona, Spain, July 6-11 (Workshops, Plenaries, Concurrents, Exhibits, Demos, Social, Poetry Slam, Dancing - AC Marriott Forum Hotel), preceding and in conjunction with The Festival of Consciousness, July 11-13 (Music, Art, Experiential, Inspiration, Spirituality, Education, Business, Evolution). Through his research, he posits that the vagus nerve may have untapped potential to influence states of consciousness when stimulated by ultrasound, suggesting a direct pathway between physical body processes and awareness.Microtubules as a Model for Consciousness: Cooley discusses the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (ORCOR) theory, originally developed by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose, which views microtubules as a potential site for consciousness within cells. This model contrasts sharply with the traditional neuronal view, arguing that consciousness could be emerging from sub-cellular structures, rather than solely from synaptic interactions.Xenon's Unexplored Role in Consciousness and Pain Relief: Throughout the conversation, Cooley explains his interest in xenon gas for its unusual effects on consciousness and physical pain. Known for its anesthetic properties, xenon interacts with microtubules in ways that could reveal more about how consciousness works at a cellular level. He shares personal experiences with xenon as profoundly healing and consciousness-expanding, a combination he believes could be used in new therapeutic models.Gratitude Meditation and HRV Enhancement: Cooley recounts how a form of gratitude-based meditation has been shown to significantly raise Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a key indicator of autonomic nervous system balance. By coupling gratitude with anesthetics like ketamine, individuals may enter states of heightened well-being and healing, providing a bridge between subjective states and measurable physiological effects. The Potential of Conscious Intention for Healing: Cooley suggests that if consciousness operates through microtubules, then conscious intention may have a tangible effect on physical healing. He speculates that specific mindsets, especially gratitude, could interact with bodily processes at a fundamental level. This view ties into long-standing yet often-dismissed ideas around the mind-body connection and its implications for health.Quantum Mechanics and Cellular Intelligence: Discussing the quantum behavior of microtubules, Cooley points out their ability to interface with quantum-level processes. This quantum component, according to ORCOR, is where consciousness may arise and could allow cells to possess a form of “intelligence” or agency. This insight proposes a model of cellular life as potentially sentient, challenging conventional biological views. The Commercial and Academic Resistance to New Theories of Consciousness: Finally, Cooley critiques the scientific community's resistance to non-traditional models of consciousness, attributing it to entrenched financial and academic interests. He suggests that the popular synaptic model persists due to its alignment with pharmacological approaches, which are lucrative but may overlook more holistic explanations of consciousness and agency.

We explore how this theory challenges mainstream neuroscience, which often reduces the mind to simple neural activity, and instead suggests that consciousness may have a profound connection to the universe's underlying structure.   Throughout the conversation, Stuart addresses the debate over AI consciousness, asserting that true conscious experience cannot arise from mere computation but requires quantum processes. He shares insights on the latest experiments in anesthesia and quantum biology, offering a fresh perspective on how the brain might function on a deeper, quantum level.   Join us as we unpack the groundbreaking Orch OR theory and what it could mean for the future of science, technology, and our understanding of reality.   Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay updated on the latest cutting-edge discussions in AI, quantum theory, and consciousness research!     Stay Updated: Craig Smith Twitter: https://twitter.com/craigss Eye on A.I. In this episode, Chad explores a scientific theory of consciousness first put forth by Nobel Laureate Roger Penrose and Dr. Stuart Hameroff in the 1990s called quantum consciousness. This unorthodox, yet-scientific theory proposes that consciousness arises out of highly coordinated quantum processes occurring in the cells of the brain. This theory combines quantum mechanics, relativity, neuroscience, cognitive science, molecular biology, and philosophy. It's different than prevailing theories of consciousness, which suggest that consciousness is an epiphenomenon of the firing of synapses in the neurons of the brain. Instead, Penrose's theory suggests that subatomic particles collapse of their own accord and thereby create what Penrose calls proto-consciousness. It is an elegant way to bridge the two prevailing theories of consciousness: materialist and idealist. This theory also has major implications for artificial intelligence because it means that machine learning and neural networks may never achieve true intelligence, strong AI, superintelligence, or anything resembling artificial consciousness.Chad also explores the idea of computability, computers as universal metaphor, and the possibility that quantum computers might be a more promising avenue for research into artificial general intelligence. This episode was inspired by Chad's work in the philosophy, cosmology and consciousness program at CIIS under Kerri Welch, for a course called The Epic of the Universe. Well known for his controversial work with quantum theorists Roger Penrose, Dr. Hameroff suggests that consciousness originates in quantum states, and then interacts with neural microtubules indicating that the brain actually still has something to do with consciousness while at the same time, introducing the idea that quantum field theory holds that consciousness is fundamental and exists outside of the brain.“ When I learned about microtubules, back at Hahnemann in 1972. I wondered, how they knew where to go and what to do and what was their organizing principle? Did they have intelligence? I believe, microtubules are both the skeletal structural support and the nervous system within the cell, because cells are much too intelligent to be simple on off states.” Some may believe that the brain is a computer processing information, and consciousness is some kind of output but, that's not how it works. In fact, people in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and neuroscience, consider the brain as a computer of say, 100 billion neurons 10 to the 11th neurons but, Dr. Hameroff feels, you got to consider the neurons, what's inside the neurons, and you got to go deeper more like 10 to the 27th, to even be close to the human brain or consciousness. Conscious awareness happens at the level of Planck scale, which is the most fundamental (energy) level of the universe. Consciousness is out there having these proto conscious moments much like musicians warming up. It sounds like noise but, once they're orchestrated it becomes music. That's exactly what the microtubules do orchestrate these random quantum moments of consciousness into a full, rich, conscious experience.

What does symmetry and self-similarity between life and intelligence mean for the nature of reality? How are neurones like genes?  Today we have the extraordinary Fractal Brain Theory to discuss. After episode #38 about the World as a Neural Network, with Russian physicist and computer scientist Vitaly Vanchurin, i've become more open to a unified theory of universe that reconciles quantum mechanics with general relativity, as Vanchurin's equations seem to offer. So when I was recommended today's guest's Fractal Brain Theory by one of the wonderful listeners, I was curious if a little sceptical given all the psychedelic hype about fractal geometry. So a symmetrical theory of repeating self-similar, self-modifying behaviour in the universe is not so far from the vision of the universe as a thriving, adaptable neural network. And according to today's guest the symmetry directly connects the often divorced worlds of neurones, brains and intelligence with the world of genes, evolution and life.  He is multi-disciplinary researcher, computer scientist, musician and author Wai H Tsang. A self-taught thinker in the world of neurology, evolutionary biology, consciousness and philosophy of mind, Tsang is in the unique position of combining these traditions into a single theory of brain, that promises to solve even the hard problem of consciousness. Trained in computer science at Imperial college, he wrote the first version of his Fractal Brain Theory in 2016, in his book of the same name, and it was picked up by quantum consciousness theorist Stuart Hameroff, who invited him to the Science of Consciousness Conference, alongside heavy weights in the field like David Chalmers, Roger Penrose, Sue Blackmore,  Donald Hoffman - many who've been on this show already. This recognition catapulted his theory into the field, so it's with great pleasure that I include it on the show for us to compare alongside the theories of many of the giants. Consciousness can be created by a brain and there could still be an afterlife. How could that work? Sea Kimbrell has a JD and a PhD in biology, and is a former Professor of Biology. Sea decided to leave academia because he wanted to spend his time thinking about the big questions in life, not where his next grant was coming from. He currently writes from his home in Kansas. He is author of "Atheists in the Afterlife: Eight Paths to Life After Death Without God." As an atheist from a secular family he always wondered what could happen after death. Using his knowledge as a scientist, he realized there ARE ways we can survive death that has nothing to do with god, heaven, or religion. While there has been lots of scientific research on survival of consciousness, Sea takes a completely unique approach to this question. Theories such as a Block Universe related to how time is an illusion and the simulation theory are some of the theories that play into his assessment. Sea and Liz discuss how as two atheists, who think there could be an afterlife, their thoughts are alike and how they differ. #33 – Testing consciousness causes collapse: an interview with Kelvin McQueen

In episode 33 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle interviews Kelvin McQueen on his recent theory on how consciousness might collapse the wave function. Kelvin is a professor of philosophy at Chapman University who investigates the nature of consciousness and role it might play in quantum mechanics. The measurement problem in quantum mechanics is that there is a smoothly and deterministically evolving superposition that is abruptly “measured” and reduced to a finite physical state, but it is unclear what constitutes a measuring device. In collaboration with David Chalmers, Kelvin explores the hypothesis that the measurement device in quantum mechanics might be consciousness. However, consciousness is typically an ill-defined vague idea that does not produce any tangible upgrade to the mystery of what a measuring device is. Here, Kelvin uses the definition of consciousness from integrated information theory (IIT) by Giulio Tononi. Consciousness is the minimally reducible information state of a system, which is defined as a recurrent network of interconnected nodes that predict the next state of the system. According to Kelvin, this definition allows for testable predictions to be made regarding the role of consciousness. In the upgraded quantum IIT theory, the nodes are quantum bits (or qubits) and the edges are entanglement relationships. Thus, QIIT defines an interconnected quantum computer (of sorts…) as consciousness and this reduces the wave function. Furthermore, the collapse of the wave function is not instantaneous but instead is continuous, drawing from the continuous spontaneous localization theory of quantum mechanics. Altogether, these ideas present a picture where consciousness is integral to a fundamental description of the physical universe and might provide room for an expanded sense of self. In this interview, I interrupt intermittently to describe the relevant ideas with graphical representation and compare this model to the Orchestrated Objective Reduction model by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose. There are some amazing new ideas that Kelvin McQueen describes in this episode, so be sure to check it out!

In episode 30 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle sits down with Stuart Hameroff to get an update on current events in the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) Model. This interview took place on August 30th, 2022 in his home in Tucson, AZ. The interview covered four major topics. Our discussion of these topics is interleaved with my reaction, summary, and commentary on the topic of discussion. First, we discussed a recent submitted study that found coherent transmission of excitons between tubulin proteins in a microtubule. This study provides evidence for long range quantum coherence in microtubules, which is a requirement for the Orch-OR model to be grounded in microtubule function. Second, Stuart explains some unpublished pilot data that find superradiant photon emission in microtubules for multiple seconds. This finding has multiple implications. First off, this could be evidence of sustained quantum coherence in microtubule on the order of fractions of a second to multiple seconds. If true, then this implies that the slow cognitive processes of the human mind could be instantiated in slower quantum computations. In addition, this implies that coherent light emission could be a means by which multiple microtubules become entangled to form a network of quantum bits – in essence, a quantum computer. For the third topic, we discuss a recent review paper published by Stuart that explores the idea that the brain is organized in a biological hierarchy spanning multiple spatiotemporal scales. A collaborator of his, Anirban Bandyopadhyay, claims to have recorded coherent kilohertz and megahertz electrical activity from the scalp of humans in what he calls a dodecogram. This data is currently unpublished and I am personally skeptical as this would require coherent activity in this very fast frequency domain across a large spatial swath of cortex to be picked up from the scalp. At this point, I ask a series of questions to Stuart on the relationship between human cognition and microtubule function. The Orch-OR model claims that slow human cognition is a “beat” generated from much faster microtubule function. However, in my view, this beat explanation suggest that human cognition might be emergent, or epiphenomenal, which is not something that Stuart or myself are comfortable with. Finally, we discuss the recent controversy surrounding a study conducted to test the so-called “Diosi-Penrose objective reduction” model. In short another researcher proposed a similar theory to Penrose's objective reduction model of wave function collapse. In this other theory, the collapse of the wave function was suggested to emit radiation. In this recent experimental study, they found no evidence of radiation emission upon collapse of the wave function. Therefore, the authors of this study concluded that the Diosi OR model was incorrect, but then drew the conclusion that therefore Orch-OR and Penrose OR are not supported by evidence. Stuart refutes this by explaining that Penrose OR does not propose the emission of radiation. I have included chapters in this video so that you can skip to the interview if you so desire. I hope you enjoy!

We boldly circle April 15th  in red on our calendars so that it stands out like a swollen thumb. Of course, there is also the Internal Revenue Service here in the US, which has taken in over 3 trillion dollars in taxes from over 250 million taxpayers and felt that we aren't paying enough and hired 87,000 more agents and gave them powers much like a government police force including lethal force. But we don't need to be on that soap box today.    What about death, though? The other certainty of being human is, for most of us, not quite as certain. Biologists define death as the complete cessation of all life processes, which eventually take place in all living organisms. Sadly, that description doesn't provide a clear picture. It doesn't describe what death feels like. How will you feel then? How will it look? What are our plans? Where are we headed?   The embodiment of death in a black robe and scythe in hand, the Grim Reaper, enters. We all know of this deity and its so-called motivations. It approaches everyone while watching for the last sand particle to fall, holding an hourglass in its hand. When that happens, it cuts the soul free with a razor-sharp slice that it has perfected over time. Although it may not be a pretty picture, it is distinct and obvious.   Putting a human face on the idea of death is ultimately the Grim Reaper's "job." But why did people feel the need to give the Grim Reaper such a gloomy appearance? Why not turn him into a welcoming and useful tour guide for the underworld? Why must he also be a man, for that matter?   We'll examine the Grim Reaper's history, the symbolism attached to his appearance, and how he's portrayed in other cultures. We'll also look at how the Reaper has been depicted in literature, film, and art. When we're done, you'll understand the identity of the Grim Reaper, his methods, and most crucially, the reason for his existence (should you see him prowling around your deathbed).   As Lewis Carroll once said, it's best to begin at the beginning. And for the Grim Reaper, the beginning can be found in the creation myths present in all cultures.   Death itself must exist before the Grim Reaper, a personification of death, can exist. Humans were initially formed as immortal creatures who descended from their level of perfection in almost all civilizations and religions. The Bible's most famous example is the story of Adam and Eve's fall. The Book of Genesis claims that God made Adam and Eve to care for the world He had made and to help populate it. The Garden of Eden was a paradise where the first man and woman resided. Adam was instructed by God to tend to the garden and gather fruit from all the trees, with the exception of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Unfortunately, Eve was duped into eating the fruit by Satan, who was speaking via a serpent. She then gave Adam the fruit, who consumed it as well despite being aware that it was wrong. Adam and Eve died physically and spiritually as a result of defying God.   In other religions, people were formed as mortals who made valiant attempts to become immortal but failed. This tale is told in The Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh, a character from Mesopotamian literature, was the progeny of a goddess and a human ruler. Gilgamesh, however, was still a mortal being, just like his closest buddy Enkidu. When Enkidu passes away, the great hero is troubled by the idea of dying and embarks on a mission to become immortal. He meets Utnapishtim, a man who has been granted eternal life by the gods, during his travels. Gilgamesh is promised immortality by Utnapishtim if he can last a week without sleeping. Gilgamesh eventually nods off, but Utnapishtim still gives him a plant that can restore its owner's health. Any hopes Gilgamesh had of becoming eternal are dashed when the plant is devoured by a hungry snake on the way home.   Gilgamesh returns home in the mythology of Mesopotamia and joyfully accepts his life as a mortal man. But most people aren't that laid back. The thought of our own mortality disturbs us. Everything we accomplish is constantly plagued by the shadow of death. Research supports this. According to a 2022 survey, 20% of Americans over the age of 50 experience anxiety when they consider their afterlife. 53 percent of respondents think ghosts or spirits exist, and 73 percent think there is life after death.   Undoubtedly, and as it has been for thousands of years, what happens to us as we die, as well as what occurs after we die, is a huge issue. Humans use a tried-and-true strategy: they give death a form they are familiar with in order to make sense of dying and mortality. As a result, a vague, invisible phenomenon becomes a concrete, observable phenomenon. You can comprehend death if you see a familiar face in it. Better yet, if you can put your anxieties aside and perceive death as a kind, gentle face.   It can, of course, also go the other way. Looking at death might reveal a frightful countenance. The terrifying visage of the Grim Reaper arose following a particularly trying period in human history, as we'll discover in the following section.   Why not give death a kind face if you're going to give it a human one? The Greeks adopted that strategy and gave death the name Thanatos. Hypnos, the deity of sleep, and his twin brother Thanatos were both shown as attractive, young males. Thanatos is depicted in some images as having wings and a put out flame. He had the responsibility of going to Hades, the Greek underworld, with the deceased. There, Charon, the ferryman on the River Styx, would receive the souls from Thanatos. In this interpretation, death is lovely and beneficial rather than fearful and ugly.   There are also feminine variations of death. The Valkyries were depicted as stunning young women in Norse mythology who carried soldiers' souls to their afterlife as well as acting as messengers for Odin. In actuality, the word "Valkyries" refers to "slain's choosers." They would ride on winged horses during battle and pick intrepid soldiers to perish by scouting the battlefield. They would then deliver these spirits to Odin's realm, Valhalla. The valiant spirits were recruited to participate in the terrible struggle known as Ragnarok after they reached the afterlife.   The Valkyries are comparable to angels, who serve as a spiritual bridge between God and people. Angels provide messages to mankind or defend them in some myths. In other tales, they converse with the dead and torture the sinners. Many religions and civilizations feature the Angel of Death, a spirit that removes a person's soul from the body at the moment of death. In Judeo-Christian tradition, the archangels Michael and Gabriel have served as death angels. The Islamic Angel of Death known as Azrael can occasionally be seen as a terrifying ghost with eyes and tongues covering every inch of his body. Every soul in the world has a birth and a death recorded in a vast ledger that Azrael keeps updated.   By the Middle Ages, the Angel of Death had been conceptually ingrained in both European religion and culture. But in the latter half of the 14th century, an epidemic occurrence changed how the common person perceived and reacted to death. The plague of the Middle Ages, one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, was that occurrence. The initial plague outbreak claimed at least 25 million lives, while subsequent plague outbreaks that recurred for centuries resulted in millions more deaths [source: National Geographic]. Fear swept the entire continent: fear of death, fear of an unknown epidemic, fear of the agony of the disease's late stages, when the skin on a victim's extremities grew black and gangrenous. All activities were characterized by a morbid atmosphere, which also had an impact on the period's writers and painters.   Unsurprisingly, skeletons started to represent death in artwork at this time. In reality, the skeletal form of death was frequently depicted in a similar manner by painters. He was frequently pictured with a crossbow, dart, or other weapon. These tools would eventually give way to the scythe, a mowing instrument with a long, curved blade attached at an angle to a long handle. Many artworks depicted the hereafter chopping down souls like grain by swinging its scythe through a throng of humanity. A young woman would occasionally stand at the grave to serve as a reminder of the connection between life and death. The idea that death might communicate with the living and lure them into the hereafter was another prevalent one. Due of this, skeletons are depicted dancing and having fun with people from all walks of life in the Dance of Death, also known as Danse Macabre.   These post-plague images of death led to the creation of the Grim Reaper. We'll look at the significance of his form and physique on the following page.   The Grim Reaper is an incredibly symbolic figure. When he eventually arrives, the items he is carrying and even the clothes he is wearing will reveal something about his character and his objectives. Let's examine some of the symbolism one symbol at a time.   Skeletons and skulls. It was common to observe piles of decaying bodies as the disease spread through Europe and Asia. One in five Londoners perished during the Great Plague of London, which struck the city between 1665 and 1666 [source: National Geographic]. Given how common death and dying are, it is reasonable that artists and illustrators started to represent death in the form of a corpse or skeleton. The skeleton figure serves as a metaphor for the decomposition of human flesh—what remains after worms and maggots have done their dirty work. It also feeds into one of the biggest concerns that people have: the dread of annihilation.   Black cloak. Black has long been connected to loss and gloom. Funeral attendees dress in black, and black hearses are used to transport the deceased. Black, however, is frequently associated with bad energies. The Reaper exudes mystery and danger thanks to his dark cloak. The Reaper hides beneath the shadows of his cloak, playing off our fears of the unknown because the things we can't see worry us just as much as the things we can see.   Scythe. The Reaper is seen clutching arrows, darts, spears, or crossbows in early depictions. These are the tools he use to kill his victim. A scythe eventually took the place of these other tools of killing. A scythe was an implement used for cutting grass or reaping grain. It made sense for this symbol to be put to death in an agricultural community where harvesting in the fall signified the end of a year. Death harvests souls for their passage into the hereafter in a similar manner to how we harvest our crops.   Hourglass. Sand pours from the upper to bottom glass bulb of the traditional hourglass over the course of an hour. It has endured into the digital age as a reminder to be patient as our computer loads a Web page or executes a command because it is such a potent representation of time and how it passes. Additionally, the Grim Reaper holds an hourglass, reminding us that time is running out. Our time is up when the sand is gone. We can only pray that we have more time to live than an hour.   It was so common to see this representation of the Grim Reaper in religious writings. The Book of Revelation in the Bible provides the best illustration. Four horsemen appear in Revelation 6:1–8 to bring about tragedies signifying the end of the world. Pestilence, war, famine, and death are the four horsemen. Only Death is expressly mentioned out of the four. He is seated on a pale horse, which is frequently mistaken for pale green, the hue of illness and decay. Most often, Death is portrayed as the Reaper himself, with a grimacing skull and scythe in hand, ready for the gory labor that lies ahead.   The Grim Reaper is still a popular subject for writers today. We'll examine at a few instances of the Reaper in popular culture in the section that follows.   Without a doubt, the Grim Reaper makes a fantastic character, which explains why he has long been a part of myths and legends. One typical tale, known as the "cheating death" tale, describes a person who tries to deceive the Grim Reaper in order to avoid dying. A well-known illustration is "The Legend of Rabbi Ben Levi" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Death for the holy man in Longfellow's poem arrives with the somber proclamation, "Lo! the time approaches near/When thou must die." Can I hold the sword of death? the rabbi enquiries. The rabbi receives the weapon from Death, who hurriedly flees and hides until God can step in to save him. Ben Levi is not killed when God appears, but the rabbi is instructed to give the sword back to its rightful owner.   Other influential works, such the Danse Macabre, or Dance of Death, a sort of drama that appeared after the Black Death, have established our contemporary understanding of the Reaper. These plays were intended to help churchgoers accept the certainty of death. A victim's encounter with death, symbolized as a skeleton, was portrayed in the performance, which typically took place in a cemetery or churchyard. The victim makes various justifications for why his life should be saved, but these are rejected, and death eventually follows him away with an entourage of other skeletal creatures. Several German engravers, like Bernt Notke and Hans Holbein, found that the scenes from this play made for interesting themes. These artists' prints depicted dancing skeletons amid people from all social classes as a message that nobody, not even royalty, could avoid death.   Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" has had a similar impact on current culture. The 1957 movie is about Antonius Block, a knight who returns from the Crusades to discover that the disease has killed many of his countrymen. Max von Sydow plays Antonius Block in the role. Block is also awaited by Death, who is portrayed by Bengt Ekerot. Having reached a standstill, the knight challenges Death to a game of chess, which Block ultimately loses. The image of Ekerot's Death, a menacing white visage disguised beneath a black cloak, endures so vividly despite the story's unsettling nature.   The Grim Reaper also plays a key role in the following works:   "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," a song released by Blue Öyster Cult in 1976 and now regarded as a rock classic "Because I could not stop for Death," a poem by Emily Dickinson, in which the narrator shares a carriage ride with Death "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, in which the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, cloaked and skeletal, appears to show Scrooge how he will die The Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett, which feature Death as an ally of mankind The Sandman by Neil Gaiman, a groundbreaking series of comic books in which Death appears as a girl "Death Takes a Holiday," a 1934 film about Death's decision to take a break from his normal business to see what it's like being mortal; a 1998 remake, "Meet Joe Black," starred Brad Pitt in the role of Death. "Scream," a 1996 homage to slasher flicks in which a murderous teen stalks his victims in a Reaper-like costume "Dead Like Me," a Showtime series that explores the lives (or afterlives) of a group of grim reapers who walk among the living   Whether he is funny or terrifying, a man or a woman, the Grim Reaper will probably always be a part of our pop culture diet. The Reaper will calmly wait in the shadows and come for each of us in the end, even if storytellers grow weary of dealing with death and dying.   Lastly, we thought since we are talking about the personification of death, we should also include some theories as to what happens after we die. Let's see how many you, the listeners, agree with; and how many we think are stupid and illogical. Let's begin!   Excretion  The idea that the universe is actually one enormous brain of a higher species has been around for many years. In certain containers, it might be one or more brains. This hypothesis states that the solar system is merely a brain cell. Humans are insignificant components of this cell as well. For that enormous brain, our thousands of millions of years of history occurred in a fraction of a second. Let's examine what it says on life after death. How are our own dead cells handled? They are discarded after being sloughed off. Similar things will happen to us if we are a small piece of a vast mind. That is, the universe will leave our consciousness where it dumps its waste when we pass away. Oh, how disgusting. I am aware that this notion is a little unusual and a little challenging to understand, but that is only because we do not fully understand it.   Just like that, my life became meaningless.   You enter the cosmic consciousness   Life: What is it? Knowing the answer to this question is crucial. We are conscious of our existence and are fully in charge of our own thinking. Only 20 watts of power are required for this by our brain. Most light bulbs use more electricity than that because this power is so low. Biologists are still unable to properly explain how our brain makes every decision so precisely. Our area of expertise is consciousness, but we do not understand its origin. And where does it go after we pass away? In accordance with Sir Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff's orchestrated objective reduction theory of the mind, coherent quantum processes in clusters of microtubules within brain neurons are biologically "orchestrated" to produce consciousness. You can imagine this universe as a sea of consciousness, according to this notion. Human mind originates from this place and travels back there once we die. Consciousness connects all things in the cosmos. You can think of it like this: If you think of the universe as a sea, then our consciousness would be a wave. It remains on the ground for some time before going back. The conclusion is that after we die, our consciousness returns to the universe, where it may remain eternally or it may temporarily inhabit another body.   Our consciousness is therefore deeply ingrained in the cosmos and is inherently perplexing.   Being Human Is just One Level   Reincarnation theory holds that after we die, our souls transfer into new bodies, giving rise to a subsequent birth. Dr. Ian Stevenson has studied incarnation and looked into countless instances of young people claiming to have lived before. He established the Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia and was an academic psychiatrist. He describes incarnation as the "survival of personality after death" at times. Along with genes and environment, he thinks it can provide a plausible justification for a variety of personality traits, including phobias. However, no one's allegations have been shown to be true. When this notion first emerged, little was understood about the universe's complexity and mysticism. Because of this, they only thought that our spirit may reincarnate in a different body on earth. What if your soul has a different physical body somewhere else in the universe? What if your spirit adopts a shape that we are unaware of rather than moving into a new body? This idea holds that our Souls or conscious entities can travel anyplace in the cosmos. This implies that you could once more be a person, a cool alien, a pointless insect, or something else else. In reality, we have no idea who or what we will be after we no longer exist as humans.   The Universe Ends   Can you demonstrate the reality of this world and the cosmos? The likelihood is that you will affirm and provide the objects and people in your environment with proof. However, according to the solipsistic hypothesis, there is nothing outside of your mind and brain. For you, what you see and hear is accurate, but you can never establish the veracity of the people in your immediate vicinity. Let's use GTA 5 as an example. When you are at a specific location in this game, everything around you is functional. There are other close residents there, so nothing strange is happening to you. What about the locations where you are not? Actually, those places didn't exist back then. According to this hypothesis, there is no other life in the cosmos besides you. Therefore, the universe stops existing after you pass away. That implies that every person you know and love likewise vanishes. Simply said, everything and everyone is a projection of your subconscious mind.   Therefore, take another look at the world and stop griping about pointless things. After all, you are the one who made it all.   Life Starts over again   I'm sure you've experienced this at least once in your life. that a location or person appears familiar to you, despite the fact that you've never been there or interacted with them before. This is known as déjà-vu. What if everything feels familiar? That implies that your life keeps repeating itself? Therefore, it appears that you may be familiar with that location or that individual. Two things could lead to this. First of all, your life is like a movie that never ends. Second: Although your life is repeated, you always have more influence over it. This reminds me a lot of the film Groundhog Day. Obviously, there are some significant differences; in this case, life restarts after death rather than after a day, and you have significantly less influence than in the film. Therefore, have luckier next time, bro. God knows how many times we are experiencing a life (which stinks) without even realizing it is a déjà-vu.   You have successfully entered a loop.   The Dreamer Wakes Up   It's entirely possible that our existence is nothing more than a creature's dream, despite the fact that this may sound like some made-up stories from the 1980s. You must have all had dreams. Only until we wake up do we know that dreams were just illusions. We become unable to distinguish between reality and dreams. Since dreams come from our own subconscious minds, their reality may or may not be in question. Vital Signs: The Nature and Nurture of Passion author Gregg Levoy concurs. And some of the most well-known concepts in the modern world, including Google, the Theory of Relativity, the first periodic table, etc., had their origins in dreams. Thus, it is possible for dreams to be quite real. So it's possible that we wake up in the "actual" world after we pass away. very similar to Inception The subject of what occurs when a dreaming creature passes away now arises. For the time being, there is no clear response to this query. We have no idea if the person who is waking up from sleep is a soul, a human, or something else entirely.   You Get Re-programmed   This hypothesis proposes that our world is a computer simulation. The most prevalent option on this list is this. It's likely that you have heard of this before. Nick Bostrom, an Oxford philosopher, made the initial suggestion in 2003. It contends that either all intelligent species perish before being able to produce an ancestor simulation or choose not to do so for some reason. Or perhaps we are merely acting out a simulation. In the event that we are simulations of our ancestors, our Consciousness is programmed. We play a very small part in the simulation. So, after erasing your memories, our programmer can transport us to a different space and time in the simulation when we pass away. They only need to make a few tweaks as they already have our base code. It is really difficult to foresee what those programmers will perform. They have a wide range of options at their disposal. What a blast?   Our Consciousness Is Unreal   The simulation hypothesis is also related to this notion. Avoid saying, "There are two theories on the same hypothesis." Theo Musk believes that the odds of us actually living in the "true" world are one billion to one. It is completely believable. This side, though, is substantially darker. As your "Consciousness" is merely programming, we lack our own free will. We appear to be operating according to a code. They are free to run or remove your code whenever they wish. They might have entered your code the last time you closed your eyes. While you slept last night, all of your memories were implanted in you. Even though it has only been a few hours, you suddenly believe you have been this person for years. They can also alter or remove your code the next time you go to bed. Depending on what they need, they could simply "remove" you from the simulation or completely change who you are. This reminds me a lot of Westworld. In this case, a fictitious universe is made, and characters are formed with certain duties allocated to them. We all contribute to some larger narratives. By simply adding new memories of a different location and possibly even time to the code, they can change the role of any person according to their needs. Everything you believe yourself to be is merely an illusion. Therefore, all that we are is a collection of 0s and 1s. And we carry out our pre-programmed actions.   We can at least be glad that our life, despite appearing to have no purpose, has helped our creators in some way. Or why did they even decide to make us?   Death Is An Illusion   Humans are the only animals on Earth with understanding of time, in contrast to other animals. We are aware that Time can only advance in units of days, months, or years. But is it really this time of day? The concept of time that we have today was developed by humans. Anything we believe about time could be incorrect. We think that time always flows like a river's stream. It is not required for the Universe to function in the same manner that we perceive time to function. Along with the present, the past and the future also exist in the cosmos, but we are not able to view them. Imagine that consciousness is the projecting light that causes us to see the film and that reality is a film strip. We are unable to notice the light unless a frame is placed in front of it. Its presence, however, cannot be disputed. The same principles govern Time and Reality. The past and future are not visible to us, but they coexist with the present. Three-dimensional space-time surrounds us and binds us. So how does this relate to death? You don't actually die. Death is just a fantasy. Because you are unable to exist in frames where you are dead, you must always exist in frames where you are living. Just that other people think you are dead because this does not hinder ‘their' existence.   Anything is Possible   About what happens after death, we cannot be certain. The many-worlds interpretation hypothesis postulates that there are an almost unlimited number of realities. There are countless parallel universes, each containing every conceivable concept. There is a universe where you are a billionaire, Hillary won the election, and I am reading this essay you wrote. Therefore, in some universes, anything is conceivable after death. Reincarnation occurs in some universes, or heaven and hell exist in some as well. In some universes, after we pass away, we become zombies, whereas in others, we simply pass away. In some alternate universe, all of the aforementioned theories are plausible. We simply don't know what universe we reside in, or perhaps it hasn't been determined yet. You might pass away in the cosmos or theory you hold dear. According to the solipsism theory, your universe will come to an end when you pass away. Anything is possible, after all.

In episode 27 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle discusses the proposal of a quantum soul. The soul is the part of you that survives your entire lifetime. In this episode, we discuss three properties of quantum mechanics that might provide a novel solution to this age-old mystery. First of all, we discuss the curious discovery of Bose-Einstein Condensation. This state of matter was observed in the laboratory when supercooling liquid helium down to two degrees above absolute zero. The liquid helium underwent a mysteries transformation where all of the individual atoms began to share a single wave function and move together coherently. In this carefully constructed scenario, we can witness quantum properties at the macroscopic scale. Bose-Einstein Condensation is relevant to theories of mind because it is the creation of a macroscopic unification of many parts – this might be what it is like to be a single person extended throughout a physical body. What if there was a network of Bose-Einstein Condensation that was quite literally YOU? Alternatively, your mind could be a conceptualized as a “conscious pilot,” a model proposed by Stuart Hameroff, where you move around in your brain shifting between different cognitive streams of information. But this begs the question, how could the conscious pilot survive for your entire lifetime? Even in quantum computer models of the mind, the wave function that is you undergoes a series of collapse events. These collapse events destroy the wave function and then a new wave function is created. What, if anything, could survive the repeated collapse of the wave function? We fall back to the null model wherein the continuity of your life is created through the information stored in the digital aspects of your brain. Each moment is a new experience and you are forever stuck in the present moment. Perhaps there is no soul and this moment is the first and last moment of your life? The continuity of your experience is created through digital storage mechanisms, but nothing beyond this digital information survives past a given moment of experience. The episode wraps up comparing these different quantum theories of the soul. Do you think you have a soul? Which theory best explains the continuity of our lives?

This episode continues my series on consciousness—are we just biological robots? Following on from my exciting interview last week with quantum biophysicist Dr. Luca Turin, I dig further into competing quantum theories of consciousness.  The famous Sir Roger Penrose and his partner Stuart Hameroff have proposed the Orchestrated OR theory.  This theory posits a modification of the incomplete theory of quantum mechanics that underlies half of physics. They argue that consciousness arises from moments of wavefunction collapse that are objectively linked to certain aspects of quantum superpositions.  They further argue that biology has evolved a mechanism to orchestrate these wavefunction collapses in tiny subcellular structures called microtubules. My guest today has been doing experiments in the lab to determine if physical processes in microtubules respond to anesthetics. Professor Jack Tuszyński obtained his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics in 1983 from the University of Calgary. From 1983 to 1988 he was a faculty member at the Department of Physics of the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's. He moved to the University of Alberta in 1988 as an assistant professor, between 1990 to 1993 he was an associate and then full professor at the Department of Physics. Between 2005 and 2020 he has held the prestigious Allard Chair in Experimental Oncology at the Cross Cancer Institute where he leads an interdisciplinary computational drug discovery group. He is also a Fellow of the National Institute for Nanotechnology of Canada. In episode 14 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle spells out the orchestrated objective reduction theory of consciousness by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose. Biology requires a central processing unit to integrated information across the cell. While quantum computation offers unique solutions to biology's problems, the warm wet noisy environment of the brain does not lend itself easily to stable quantum superpositions. Penrose & Hameroff propose that nonpolar pockets with limited environmental influence creates the conditions for delocalized clouds of electrons that enter superposition. Benzene rings and aromatic rings provide a geometric means of building superposed electron channels. At the core of each protein, nonpolar channels of electrons create a macroscopic functional unit to guide protein function. Tubulin extend this principle by aligning with their neighbors in a cyclical pattern to create topological pathways. The topological qubits in microtubules extend to their neighbors via microtubules associated proteins (MAPs). Quantum computers require a digital interface phase and a non-local quantum computation phase. Actin microfilaments dynamically isolate and expose the microtubules to the environment through phase transition from a liquid-state (digital) to a gel-state (quantum). As the microtubules are isolated, the superposition grows in complexity until it reaches an objective threshold and self-collapses. This collapse rate is hypothesized to be the equivalent of a single moment of conscious experience. As these moments are strung together, a conscious experience is created. Anesthetics and psychedelics are theorized to bind to tubulin proteins and either silence the electron channels or to enhance their resonance, thereby modifying conscious experience.

In episode 13 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle discusses how microtubules are the most likely candidate to be a universal quantum computer that acts as a single executive unit in cells. First off, computer scientists are trying to model human behavior using neural networks that treat individual neurons as the base unit. But unicellular organisms are able to do many of the things that we consider to be human behavior! How does a single-cell lifeform perform this complex behavior? As Stuart Hameroff puts it, “neuron doctrine is an insult to neurons,” referring to the complexity of a single cell. Let's look inside a cell, what makes it tick? Many think the DNA holds some secret code or algorithm that is executing the decision-making process of the cell. However, the microscope reveals a different story where the microtubules are performing a vast array of complex behaviors: swimming towards food, away from predators, coordinating protein delivery and creation within the cell. This begs the question: how do microtubules work? Well, they are single proteins organized into helical cylinders. What is going on here? Typically, we think of a protein's function as being determined by its structure but the function of a single protein repeated into tubes is tough to unravel. Stuart Hameroff proposed that perhaps these tubulin proteins are acting as bits of information and the whole tube is working as a universal computer that can be programmed to fit any situation. Given the limitations of digital computation, Roger Penrose was looking for a quantum computer in biology and Stuart Hameroff was looking for more than a digital computation explanation. Hence, the Hameroff-Penrose model of microtubules as quantum computers was born. If microtubules are quantum computers, then each cell would possess a central executive hub for rapidly integrating information from across the cell and to turn that information into a single action plan that could be quickly disseminated. Furthermore, the computation would get a “quantum” speed-up in that exponentially large search spaces could be tackled in a reasonable timeframe. If microtubules are indeed quantum computers, then modern science has greatly underestimated the processing power of a single cell, let alone the entire human brain.

In episode 4 of Quantum Consciousness, Justin Riddle discusses prevalent interpretations or "theories" of quantum mechanics. First is the many worlds hypothesis that claims we live in a multiverse. The problem is there is no point of making choices when all possible realities occur. There is no collapse of the wave function and superpositions are different universes. Alternatively, when systems interacts with each other they might collapse the wave function by virtue of their interaction. But Einstein question: would the moon cease to exist if we did not look at it? There may need to be an explanation for superposition without any external influence; furthermore, this is quite a chaotic process and the universe is full of order. Third, the self-collapse of the wave function was proposed by Roger Penrose to arise once a superposition evolves into sufficient complexity. This form of collapse may be especially poised to produce an increase in order. Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff suggest this form of collapse is the substrate of proto-consciousness and might be selected for and 'orchestrated' in biological systems. Finally, the spaceless/timeless domain of entanglement has been suggested to serve a "holomovement" of the universe by David Bohm and Henry Stapp to serve as a collective feedback loop. Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli speculated that if entanglement relationships found their way into the physical world they might be perceived as synchronicity. We sure go off the deep end with this one!

Each of these theories supports the idea that the electromagnetic field itself is the basis of consciousness and that this source of consciousness peers out into the space-time universe through our human sensory systems, flowing with awareness throughout the bloodstream and nervous system. Following her exploration of electromagnetic-consciousness theories, Joye then examines practical applications, describing how electric fields might be manipulated and controlled to modify and enhance the operation of consciousness in the human brain. She explores the use of contemporary brain stimulation devices that offer benefits such as decreased addiction cravings and anxiety, reduced depression and chronic pain, enhanced mathematical abilities, accelerated learning, and greater insight during mindfulness meditation.Revealing the cutting edge of consciousness studies, Joye shows that consciousness is not an isolated function of the individual brain but is connected to the larger electromagnetic field that not only encompasses the entire physical universe but also is deeply involved in the creation of matter and the material world.Shelli Renée Joye, Ph.D., attended Rice University on a physics scholarship and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. After graduation, she worked with John Lilly on interspecies communication and pursued contemplative practice with Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. She completed her doctorate in philosophy, cosmology, and consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies. The author of several books, including Developing Supersensible Perception, she lives in Viola, California.

CHEMICAL WEAPONS moved from the battlefield to the farm field after World War II. 1080 is a WMD-Weapon of Mass Destruction! SODIUM FLUOROACETATE: Sodium monofluoroacetate (or fluoroacetate), has the chemical formula FCH2COO-Na+, and is a highly toxic compound primarily used as a pesticide known commercially as Compound 1080. 1080 FLUOROACETATE IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS—1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation and the EPA as an extremely hazardous pesticide - CLASS 1A ECOTOXIN POISON. 1080 is a proven endocrine disrupter and impacts upon the body’s major organs. Just one teaspoon could kill 100 people. The only sane and effective method of balancing ecosystems is to use the components of the living system to manage itself!  Because of its isolated location New Zealand is the ideal environment for a countrywide program of RESTORATIVE ECOLOGY to show the world that ecosystem management can ONLY be done by using nature's methods. The Permaculture Principle "The Problem IS the Solution!" points to the fact that issue with the overpopulation of "invasive species" is purely caused by the absence of apex predators. The New Zealand owls and raptors are too "small." The only viable method of establishing a self-sustaining, self-balancing ecosystem is to introduce one or more apex predators capable of keeping the pest species in check. The ultimate aim of Restorative Ecology is to set up ecosystems harmonize themselves without any human intervention. Thus by introducing one or more owls from Australia to manage the indigenous Australian possums this would keep the population under control, while still providing non-poisoned meat and fur for the trappers...thus serving an elite couture industry. A countrywide program to get school children to make owl houses for the Powerful Owl and/or the Barn Owl would get the next generation interested in ethical ecology and the health of their nation. In every way...environmentally, physical and mental health, fiscally, morally, ethically, scientifically and socially the 1080 campaign is destroying New Zealand via the criminal use of a grotesque weapon of war! SHORT LIST OF TALKING POINTS WHAT IS IT:—Sodium MonoFluoroAcetate is a CLASS 1A POISON first synthesized 1896 by Belgian Frederic Swartz—Hitler was told it was too dangerous to use as a chemical weapon—1940-48 Monsanto buys patent and manufacturers it—The Wigley family business Tull Chemical took over patent and plant from Monsanto in 1955—New Zealand buys 90% of their production—America under Nixon banned 1080 in 1972 due to it killing the bald eagles. New Zealand started using 1080 for pest control by 1957. WORST POSSIBLE POISON: 1080 is called a CLASS 1A POISON  because it is a chemical weapon that causes extreme suffering and death as it interferes with the energy production in the cells and halts aerobic respiration. 3% is metabolized to fluorocitrate which messes with the enzyme that run the Krebs cycle. Death is slow, gruesome and inhumane. It was used by Saddam Hussein against his political enemies. 1080 use in any country is not only terrorism against its human and non-human inhabitants. CHEMICAL WARFARE: The NZ Government is engaged in a full on war against introduced "pests" which they say compete with and kill the native birds and other fauna. Their campaigns "Zero Invasive Predators" or "Predator Free 2050" speak to their intentions to keep at this chemical warfare—the end result of which will be the loss of the majority of native species and the brain damaging and disease of the human population. Even trace amounts damage mitochondrial DNA...In Whanganui where there is a 1080 factory "Orillion" and landfill for 1080 waste there are reports of retarded children, miscarriages, stillbirths and congenital malformations to the children of pregnant Maori women following aerial drops. BAITS: The 1080 poison is mixed with cereal and green die and made into baits, which are aerial dropped from helicopters over the native bush, streams and water catchment. The baits kill everything either directly or by secondary poisoning as carnivores eat the insects, birds and herbivores that die. A farmer who lost 570 ewes following an accidental 1080 drop on his farm said that 6 months later sheep were still dying. Around 4,000 tonnes of 1080 poison baits per year are dropped on New Zealand, enough to kill 60 million people, & the quantity increases yearly. 100 tonnes of those spoiled and expired baits are buried in landfills around the country. CLEAN GREEN: The Clean Green image of New Zealand is plainly under attack, as no other country is so fiercely killing both introduced and native species alike. Hikers report that after a drop the forests resound with the screams of dying animals and then they are silent...not even bird song. There is also the danger that sublethal traces of 1080 or its metabolites will end up in produce that NZ exports. ALL ANIMALS SENTIENT BEINGS: In 2015 New Zealand also publicly declared that they recognized that all animals are sentient beings, and then they indiscriminately continue to kill them in the most extreme torturous way possible. Revealing a deep seated hypocrisy and performative contradiction. CHEMICAL WEAPONS moved from the battlefield to the farm field after World War II. Chemical ecology and chemical agriculture are oxymorons. Systemic, nonselective, ecosystem-wide violent and inhumane poisoning of an ecosystem can never claim to be rational, sane or backed by “good science.” “Everything is out of kilter in the ecosystems where it is used!” It creates “imbalance” in the numbers of living creatures in an ecosystem and is highly destructive to the life-giving quality of the soil and water. YOU CAN'T BALANCE AN ECOSYSTEM WITH CHEMICALS WITHOUT KILLING EVERYTHING IN IT...including the forest and the microbiome itself. The restorative ecological way of reducing invasive species numbers is not to kill them but use them as a resource to feed the Apex predators. Thus supporting the ecosystem to balance itself. NEED FOR LARGER RAPTORS: New Zealand is going to have to introduce at least one more apex predator species. The assisted migration of the Powerful Owl, Rufus Owl or Barn Owl from Australia and the distribution of specifically designed OWL HOUSES is the ideal solution to the 1080 debacle. This is a permanent self-sustaining solution which comes at very little cost to the taxpayer, with NO POISONING of the land and water. LARGER APEX PREDATOR: As PEST species are used as food for both native species and STRATEGIC AMBASSADOR SPECIES brought in from neighboring countries to balance out the food chain. These ambassadors are generally a slightly larger apex predator introduced when the native apex predators are either too small or too few to control population numbers of the “pest” species. NATIVE POISONS FOR BAIT STATIONS: There must be a worldwide ban on open-ecosystem dropping of poisons, that is just common sense, however that is not to say poisons couldn’t be used in special pest-specific bait stations using natural biological poisons which are not ecosystemic.  Scientists have found a natural poison that tests show can kill rats in 5 to 10 minutes. The New Zealand native plant TUTU (Coriaria arborea) is poisonous to stock, but doesn’t lead to secondary poisoning, this could be used in cereal baits for rats and possums. GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM climate extremes and crop loss means that the Native Bush will become a vital resource to keep people alive and healthy as society is disrupted by the chaos of epic scale floods, mudslides, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, volcanic activity and famine. MAKE LOVE NOT WAR: Need to change thinking from combat to waste not want not and compassionate conservation. The four guiding principles of compassionate conservation used in the 21th Century are: 1. First Do No harm, 2. Individuals Matter, 3. Value All Wildlife, and 4. Peaceful Coexistence via Trophic Level Management ensuring that all levels of the trophic cascade are well balanced so the so called problem of “invasive species” are NOT a problem but a solution!!!! CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL HELP?  BAN 1080 HOMESTAY NETWORK: To encourage an international environmental legal movement, the New Zealand anti-1080 movement could set up a free homestay network system for visiting international environmental protection organizations, environmental scientists, ecology expert witnesses, lawyers, activists, restorative ecologists, doctors, researchers and PhD students interested in doing a thesis on 1080 use in New Zealand. The BAN 1080 Homestay Network especially encourages experts in natural ecosystem balancing and restoration, biodiversity, terraforming, forest revival and permaculture designers who work on a countrywide and global scale. This Homestay Network will further the efforts to establish New Zealand as a showcase for the most advanced ecological principles, environmental right practices and Natural Justice. The project would lead to the promotion of eco-education, ecotourism, eco-education and research, besides improving local livelihood and promoting ecoarchology and cultural values. The most important and popular career will soon be as a permecologist OR permaterraformer ie: restorative planetary management. Herbert Marcuse said in his book One Dimensional Man,  “The facile historical parallel with the barbarians threatening the empire of civilization prejudges the issue, the second period of barbarism may well be the continued empire of civilization itself. ****************** 1080 SOLUTIONS ~ ADVANCED RESTORATIVE ECOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT  Sodium MonoFluoroAcetate was first synthesized in 1896 as a chemical weapon. It is a Class 1a Poison that causes extreme suffering and death as it interferes with the energy production or aerobic respiration of cells, ie: the Krebs cycle. Death by 1080 is slow, gruesome and inhumane. The chemical weapon aerial drops of the super poison 1080 throughout the New Zealand forests result in human death, mutation, cancer, miscarriages and stillbirths, plus the violent death of farm animals and pets. You simply cannot have a thriving environment if you are indiscriminately killing off the entire food chain down to the microbiome of the soil, and including the very native species you are trying to save. Thus the New Zealand government will ultimately come to the conclusion that open ecosystem poisoning is not only an ineffective pest control method, but is pernicious, calamitous and maleficent. It is only a matter of time before the New Zealand conservation methods are going to have to emerge from the dark ages and a new age of regenerative, restorative, and balancing methods of ecosystem management are adopted. We have come too far in heart and mind to descend to such a degree of barbarity and cruelty. Conventional industrial and governmental environmental methods have relied on dilution and dissipation for dealing with noxious byproducts of their activities. The progressive sciences however have proven that both dilution and biological degradation are faulty and inadequate to the task, when considering the profound subtlety, omni-dispersive and ubiquity of nature and natural systems. Bioaccumulation of noxious substances up an ecosystem food web ensures that dilution and dissipation doesn’t work. Both government and industry can no longer continue on with their dirty business as usual when we now know about the hado effect of the imprinted water from Emoto, morphogenetic fields from Rupert Sheldrake, the fructification and spiral flow of water via the work of Schauberger, water and the life of the cell Gerald Pollack, quantum consciousness of Stuart Hameroff and that Healing is Voltage of Dr. Jerry Tennant, and the electromagnetic nature of existence, plus Bruce Lipton and epigenetics. All such advances in science point to the fact that we must change our methods of industry and governance and heal our relationship to the planet. Indeed we must change ourselves! Biodegradation of 1080 is a joke as it kills the very micro-organisms that are said to biodegrade it. Even if it does degrade it still spreads the element fluoride over the entire country...and if they keep it up, it will continue forever until everything is dead, because poisonous control of ecological systems doesn’t work to control “pest species” in an open ecosystem. Rather ecosystems must be made proportionally symmetrical by synergistically balancing the tropic layers within the ecosystem. If they are unbalanced then human intervention requires that new species of apex predators (or other ecosystem partners) be introduced and established to balance out the predator-to-prey numbers. This is the only morally intelligent answer to the burgeoning numbers of so-called “invasive species,” (possums, rats, stoats, deer and wild pigs). We just have to “balance” the food web, not exterminate it, thus it is obvious that omnicidal poisoning is contrary to effective conservation and ecology. Advanced naturalistic, restorative ecology makes up for the problems of past human intervention and allows ecosystems to balance themselves, which results in maintaining both balance and the self-sustaining mechanism of balance. Besides ecosystem trophic layer management, the only other pest control method necessary would be changing our ideological perspective from “pest management” to “resource management.” The Department of Conservation should be concerned with ecosystem resource utilization and these outlawed “non-indigenous pests'' are in fact highly nutritious FOOD for the native food chain. Plus they represent a back up survival food resource for humans during the upcoming Grand Solar Minimum Global Freeze. The hollow fiber of Possum fur provides extra warmth and lite weight to fabrics. Thus one of the most advanced and economically viable fabrics during the global chill of the Grand Solar Minimum will be high-tech clothing made from merino and possum hair. A NZ Grand Solar Minimum cold weather survival clothing industry for the global market would provide million$ and new right-livelihood jobs, while displacing those few criminal profiteering politicians, corporations and pilots who are presently terrorizing the nation and condemning their own souls to everlasting hell. The alleged problem of “invasive species” is no longer a problem but a solution via Trophic Level Management ensuring that all levels of the trophic cascade are permanently self-balancing. In which these non-native nuisance species are used as food for both native species and strategic ambassador species brought in from neighboring countries to balance out the food chain. These ambassadors are generally a slightly larger apex predator introduced when the native apex predators are either too small or too few to control the “pest” species population numbers. New Zealand is in need of larger raptors and is going to have to introduce at least one more apex predator species to fill the top of the bush food chain. The assisted migration of the Powerful Owl, Rufus Owl or Barn Owl from Australia and the distribution of specifically designed OWL HOUSES is the ideal solution to the 1080 debacle. This is a permanent self-sustaining solution which comes at very little cost to the tax payer, with NO POISONING of the land and water. Given the right components an ecosystem will take care of itself.Instead of teaching the kids to become psychopathic killers of helpless animals the schoolkids could be put to work building the raptor nesting boxes and tracking their installation in a national grid throughout the country. These bird houses must be made of natural materials, built to last and erected at the ideal height in the canopy for each particular species of owl. Considering the Grand Solar Minimum climate upheaval and the catastrophic natural disasters which will be decimating wildlife populations for the next 30-70 years, compassionate ecology in association with the introduction of strategic ambassador species is the ideal method of self-sustaining ecosystem management - in a world thrown into chaos by epic scale floods, mudslides, fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts and volcanic activity. Thousands of species will be on the move anyway due to shifting weather systems and loss of appropriate habitat, thus it is up to us “enlightened human stewards” to assist their migrations in ways that serve them and the existing trophic cascades. The restorative ecological way of reducing invasive species numbers is not to kill them but use them as a resource to feed the Apex predators. Thus supporting the ecosystem to balance itself. The New Zealand government has much more urgent responsibilities than the ruinously poisoning of the country, making it uninhabitable for beast, bird and human alike. Establishing ecological homeostasis of organisms in harmonious connection with their surroundings requires working with nature instead of against it. This Win:Win Ecology is an infinitely more intelligent, economical, safe and humane way of going about conservation in that it supports the health of the entire ecosystem and environment (including humans) and enhances the strength and stability of the global gene pool of valuable species. The four guiding principles of compassionate conservation used in the 21th Century are: 1. First Do No harm, 2. Individuals Matter, 3. Value All Wildlife, and 4. Peaceful Coexistence. “Every time you try and improve on Nature by going against it you damage yourself, for Nature is your very being.” Anthony Demello Intervention with a Class 1A super ecotoxin can obviously only bring insidious, dubious and ruinous results. The more poison they drop and longer this goes on, the greater will be the disastrous effects for the entire nation of New Zealand. Rather than a futile all-out war against nature, it is obvious that ecosystems can only be rectified and self-regulated using the methods of Nature herself. A restorative ecological management program must be undertaken in New Zealand, not just so that our “exports will be clean” but so that we can save the heart and soul of the nation.  Now is the time to evolve beyond corpo consciousness to more advanced and intelligent, Nature compliant methods of conservation, ecology and agriculture, for the repercussions of industrial barbarism are undermining the very foundations of civilization and our capacity to be human. Towards that end, together we can imagine, experiment and manifest this advanced, innovative naturalistic emergent ecology that uses uncommon sense to rectify and redeem our human relationship to the earth, to the betterment of all and with harm to none. Thereby this restorative ecological renaissance speaks to the deepest of our inherent values and sensibilities, reconciling the fact that human beings are a small but crucial part of a vastly and intricately connected system of living and non-living things. There is a contagious psycho-spiritual disease of the human soul, a parasite of the mind, that is currently manifesting itself in the form of unprecedented conflicts and crises on a global scale. This collective psychosis or mental virus -- which Native Americans have called wetiko -- covertly operates through the unconscious blind spots in the human psyche, rendering us oblivious to our own madness and compelling us to act against our own best interests. Wetiko distorts our perceptions by stealth and subterfuge, acting through us while simultaneously remaining hidden. Unconstrained by conventional laws of time and space, this 'bug' in the system deceives us by working with the projective tendencies of our mind to appear external to and other than ourselves. Thus, the conflicts and crises which threaten the collapse of political, social and economic systems, and perhaps even of the biosphere itself, are nothing less than a revelation of our own internal darkness, the side of our nature that we all too often deny.

One in a series of talks from the 2019 Models of Consciousness conference. Stuart Hameroff Center for Consciousness Studies, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona The Penrose-Hameroff ‘Orchestrated objective reduction’ (‘Orch OR’) theory suggests consciousness arises from ‘orchestrated’ quantum superpositioned oscillations in microtubules inside brain neurons. These evolve to reach threshold for Penrose ‘objective reduction’ (‘OR’) by E=h/t (E is the gravitational self-energy of the superposition/separation, h is the Planck-Dirac constant, and at the time at which Orch OR occurs) to give moments of conscious experience. Sequences, interference and resonance of entangled moments govern neurophysiology and provide our ‘stream’ of consciousness. Anesthetic gases selectively block consciousness, sparing non-conscious brain activities, binding by quantum coupling with aromatic amino acid rings inside brain proteins. Genomic, proteomic and optogenetic evidence indicate the microtubule protein tubulin as the site of anesthetic action. We (Craddock et al, Scientific Reports 7,9877, 2017) modelled couplings among all 86 aromatic amino acid rings in tubulin, and found a spectrum of terahertz (‘THz’) quantum oscillations including a common mode peak at 613 THz. Simulated presence of 8 different anesthetics each abolished the peak, and dampened the spectrum proportional to anesthetic potency. Non-anesthetic gases which bind in the same regions, but do not cause anesthesia, did not abolish or dampen the THz activity. Orch OR is better supported experimentally than any other theory of consciousness. Filmed at the Models of Consciousness conference, University of Oxford, September 2019.

Dr. Stuart Hameroff is Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology and Psychology, Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Stuart Hameroff was the lead organizer of the first Science of Consciousness Conference and is still a co-chair of the 24-year-old annual conference. He is best known for developing the Orchestrated objective reduction (Orch-OR) Theory along with Dr. Roger Penrose, which observes: “consciousness is rippling vibrations in the structure of the universe. These vibrations resonate from the microscale, where quantum physics operates, to the macroscale of the brain. Not that I had a big temper, but, especially in medicine and anesthesia, you tend to get stressed out and we have critical situations all the time. What I found over the years is that when you're in a critical situation, you know, a trauma victim comes in, a stabbing, shooting, whatever, and we have precious few minutes to get the patient stabilized from the emergency room to the operating room and get surgery going and get lines in and get airway, et cetera. I just do that and I'm pretty efficient. I've been doing it a long time. Then later that evening I go home and I start thinking about it and then I get shook up because, you know, that guy could have died. Fortunately, they didn't, we saved them. But when you think of all the decisions along the way that you make, and what could have gone wrong; what I do is, I act in the moment and take care of things and then kind of worry about it later. Thoughts on Breathing Well, of course breathing in anesthesia is key. That's our main [objective], we establish the airway and breathing for the patient. As far as my breathing, when I do get stressed, I take some deep breaths. It's interesting what that actually does outside of provide oxygen. It changes the Ph in your brain because if you hyperventilate or breathe deeply and intensely more than normal, you're going to get rid of carbon dioxide and that makes your blood and your brain more alkalotic and gets rid of acid. And when that happens, it does a lot of things. The microtubials extend their c Termina, these little projections out and it opens gap junctions between neurons so that more neurons get connected. So I wonder, I've often wondered whether that that's the mechanism by which altered states occur for meditation, a breathing meditation by opening gap junctions and including more neurons in one quantum state and that would tend to expand consciousness. Suggested Resources Book: The Emperor's New Mind: Concerning Computers, Minds, and the Laws of Physics by Roger Penrose App: n/a Bullying Story Well, when I was a kid, I was in third grade, maybe fourth grade. I went to the store for my mom and I was coming back walking, carrying a bag of groceries and the local gang of bullies came up upon me and started grabbing stuff out of my shopping bag I was carrying. I didn't exert mindfulness. Instead I just reared back to punch the guy in the mouth and he literally fell back. He was surprised because he was bigger than I was and he had three or four friends and I was expecting to get the crap beaten out of me right then and there. But they just kind of looked at me and left. So I, that's probably not the answer you were looking for, but sometimes you have to stick up for yourself. Bullying in medicine and academic medicine, particularly where you have professors and clinicians with the residents and medical students; there has been problems with bullying, you know, berating and embarrassing students and residents and people in medicine. It's become an issue and we're counseled. I myself don't do that. I tend to be on the side of the little guy I would say. Even though I'm a clinician, I'm a professor, a faculty attending. It's become much, much less of a problem because of this. It doesn't look good. It's not good for anybody. So I'd say to its credit, modern medicine has taken this issue seriously and it's not a problem as it once was. Home**Wake Up Your Mind Scientists Found That The Soul Doesn’t D.I.E – It Goes Back To The Universe **WAKE UP YOUR MIND Last updated Jul 26, 2018 46,457 Share It turns out that the human brain could be similar to a “biological computer,” and that human consciousness may be like a program which is run by a quantum computer within the brain. What’s even more astonishing is that after someone dies, “their soul comes back to the universe, and it does not die.” This is all according to American physicist Dr. Stuart Hameroff and mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose, both of whom argue that the soul is maintained in micro-tubules of brain cells. The two scientists refer to this process as “Orchestrated Objective Reduction,” or “Orch-OR.” Allegedly, when human beings are “clinically dead,” microtubules in the brain lose their quantum state but are still able to retain the information inside of them.

Consciousness defines our existence and reality. Most explanations portray the brain as a computer, with nerve cells ("neurons") and their synaptic connections acting as simple switches. However computation alone cannot explain why we have feelings and awareness, an "inner life." Hameroff and Penrose are famous for their quantum model of consciousness.
