Verbal Diorama is a podcast all about How It's Done. It being movies, and to be honest, this one is as Golden as they come. I'm Free to Takedown the history and legacy of Kpop Demon Hunters, with the outcome of me becoming Your Idol. This is What It Sounds Like... my little Soda Pop.When director Maggie Kang set out to create an animated musical combining K-pop, Korean mythology, and a demon-slaying girl group, she had a clear vision: to make a film authentically rooted in Korean culture. After more than a decade working on major animated projects, Kang pitched what she called her "love letter to K-pop" and her Korean heritage to Sony Pictures Animation. The result was KPop Demon Hunters, a film that would go on to become a global phenomenon that no-one saw coming. The film's success exceeded all expectations. KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix's most-watched film ever with over 500 million views, surpassing even Squid Game. The soundtrack made history as the first film soundtrack to place four songs in the Billboard Hot 100's top ten simultaneously, with lead single "Golden" holding the number one spot for eight weeks. The song earned five Grammy nominations, and songwriter EJAE became the first Korean American woman nominated for Song of the Year.KPop Demon Hunters represents a significant evolution in the Korean Wave. Created by a largely non-Korean production team in America, the film nonetheless maintained deep cultural authenticity, from its references to Korean girl groups of the past, and to Korean shamanism, to the small details like how characters use their chopsticks. It combines vibrant animation with KPop culture, creating a unique visual and audible feast. The soundtrack is not just catchy; it's Golden.Play me on repeat 끝없이 in your head.Support Verbal DioramaLoved this episode? Here's how you can help:⭐ Leave a 5-star review on your podcast app

In this Season 8 finale of So Many Sequels, Josh, Garrett, and David reflect on an incredible year of film. Garrett champions unexpected picks like the David Attenborough documentary Oceans and the hilarious Keke Palmer/SZA comedy One of Them Days. Josh defends his "predictable" selections including the emotionally resonant Wake Up Dead Man and Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. David builds a case for music-driven cinema with K-pop: Demon Hunters, Life of Chuck, and Superman leading his list. The only universal pick? Ryan Coogler's Sinners—a vampire film that transcends horror to explore faith, freedom, and identity. The hosts unpack why this film resonated so deeply and debate whether its pre-horror slow burn was a feature or a flaw.Beyond rankings, the episode delivers fascinating podcast statistics from 2025: 38 movies reviewed spanning 1947 to 2025, John Hughes as the year's most-watched director, and revelations about Jack Black dominating David's viewing and listening habits. The discussion concludes with 2026 resolutions (David wants to watch 150 movies!) and predictions, including Josh's controversial take that Toy Story 5 will redeem the franchise.

KPop Demon Hunters: B2B Marketing Lessons on How to Go Golden with Fractional Head of Marketing, Ray Lin

Remarkable Marketing

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2026 44:43

Most B2B brands think growth comes from turning everything up: more campaigns, more hustle, more competitive swagger. But the brands people actually follow know when to slow down, tune out the noise, and get real. That's the unexpected lesson of KPop Demon Hunters, a movie that uses K-pop stardom, rivalry, and emotional honesty to show what makes an audience stay loyal. In this episode, we break down his marketing lessons with the help of our special guest Ray Lin, Fractional Head of Marketing.Together, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from pacing for quality, standing for something bigger than the rivalry, and making vulnerability a trust engine that drives demand.About our guest, Ray LinRay Lin is a mission-driven marketing leader who turns messy funnels into clean revenue. Over 13+ years across SaaS, marketplaces, and wellness tech, he's built demand gen and ABM machines that actually align with sales—and he's unapologetically pro-AI when it lifts both creativity and efficiency.A Bay Area native and former sports writer turned “accidental but strategic marketer,” Ray believes great marketing is H2H—human to human—before it's ever B2B. He's led and rolled up his sleeves across demand gen, digital, ABM, field, performance, growth, content, product marketing, and lifecycle CRM, with 8+ years inside B2B2C marketplaces like Grubhub, Wellhub and SeatGeek. If your pipeline's leaky, your teams are siloed, or “content” isn't moving deals, Ray's the marketing leader who fixes the system, centers the customer, and gets momentum back on the scoreboard. What B2B Companies Can Learn From KPop Demon Hunters:Work smarter, not harder. KPop Demon Hunters shows that momentum dies when you confuse output with impact. Ray pulls a direct B2B parallel: “one of the lessons that come from Golden is working smarter, not harder… [Marketers] a lot think that extra 10 attempts at ad creative or 10 extra emails that you queue up in your CRM are gonna make all the difference. When in reality, it's about quality, not quantity.” For B2B, this movie is your warning label: speed without intention burns out the team and blurs the story. Make fewer bets, make them sharper, and give your work room to land.Compete with conviction, not contempt. The movie's diss track, Takedown, is a trap: when your identity becomes anti-them, you shrink your own story. Ray says it plainly: “Don't let competitive obsession poison your well.” The point isn't to never compete, it's how you compete. If your positioning is mostly about your rival, you've already let them write your narrative. Lead with what you stand for, and you won't need a villain to feel heroic.Let vulnerability be your differentiator. The movie's emotional turn lands because the heroes stop performing perfection and start telling the truth. That's the B2B move too: honesty travels farther than polish. Ray says, “ The power of vulnerability and transparency… can really skyrocket a B2B brand.” In B2B, authenticity isn't a vibe, it's a trust engine. Build a brand worth believing in.Quote“Always be ready. You don't know what's gonna be a hit and what's not going to. And when it does happen, know how to capitalize on it. Cho is the voice of Rumi, a leading character who must come to terms with her own identity as part-human, part-demon.It's a duality that resonated powerfully with her, as the daughter of Korean immigrants who struggled for acceptance, and faced racism while growing up in America. Now, Korean culture is increasingly popular worldwide, and she has become a leading role model for Asian American children, the kind she says she lacked when she was young. And despite KPop Demon Hunters being crowned as Netflix's most-watched film ever, Cho warns that Asian-led film projects are still seen as a risk. Dan is off this week. So we are pleased to bring you a feature from our new limited series American Unexceptionalism: Global Lessons on Fighting Religious Nationalism with Dr. Matthew Taylor and Rev. Susan Hayward. South Korea is a nation that is deeply entwined with the United States. From the Korean War (which never technically ended) to Korean pop culture to the deep ties between Korean and American evangelical communities, what happens in the US affects South Korea and vice versa. But most Americans weren't paying attention to the fact that Korean democracy was startlingly challenged less than a year ago when the president at the time (President Yoon) declared martial law and tried to have his political enemies arrested. That attempt at autocratic takeover was unsuccessful, because Koreans took to the streets to protest and even Yoon's own party helped overturn his martial law decision and then impeach him. What can we in the United States learn from Korean activists and religious communities about how to resist wannabe tyrants? We get help on this question from two of the foremost experts on the interchanges between Korean religion and American religion: Helen J. Kim and Ray Kim.
