Welcome to BJJ Mental Coach Podcast Episode 149. I'm your host Gustavo Dantas, and today we have Derek Price, a former NFL player, jiu-jitsu brown belt, and founder of The Faction Foundation. Derek and I first crossed paths in the early 2000s when he was a chiropractor, and I've been inspired by his journey ever since. This episode is packed with personal development insights and might be my longest one yet, but it's worth it for all the great lessons Derek shares. Here's a quick intro:Derek Price has transitioned from NFL player and CEO of publicly traded hospitals to impactful personal coaching. Drawing on his experiences in the NFL, medical field, and CEO boardrooms, Derek has created a powerful success system for driven individuals. He founded The Faction Foundation to offer ambitious professionals the same comprehensive plan, playbook, coaching, and team support typically reserved for top athletes, doctors, and business leaders. Married for 30 years with three daughters, Derek is dedicated to sharing these tools with those who previously lacked access. If you're listening to the audio version, stay tuned for my final thoughts at the end of the episode, and why I titled it: "If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you."Also, check out www.thebjjmentalcoach.com for updated content that might help you on your journey. She has a trust fund brother looking for a handout, a father who is more board member than dad, and a mother who thinks she should give up on this whole billionaire CEO thing and meet a man with a pre-nup and a yacht.Oh, and then there’s that “misunderstanding” with law enforcement witnessed by Miami’s paparazzi. Now her billion-dollar deal is on the line, and there’s a naked man in her bathtub who claims he’s going to make all her problems disappear.Charming—and happy to bend the rules when necessary—Derek Price has made a living polishing the tarnished images of the rich and famous. He’s never lost, and he never takes clients to bed. Until the dazzling Emily. Derek promised her a win and offered up a lifetime supply of orgasms as part of the deal. Sacrifice her privacy to an overprotective bodyguard? No thanks. She doesn’t need a six-foot-five, motorcycle-riding, square-jawed, hazel-eyed man-beast shadowing her every move.Jude Ellis—one-man security operation and professional problem solver—is ready to retire from the cloak and dagger stuff to live a normal life. He doesn’t need another client. Not even one with coppery-red hair and mile-long legs who looks hot AF in a sexy pair of heels. To appease her worried friends, Cameron hires Jude as her bodyguard. And despite their feisty banter and their rampant—and totally inappropriate—sex fantasies, they’re both determined to keep it professional. But as the danger to Cameron escalates, the heat simmering between them just might combust.Author’s note: Big wall-of-man hero with a fierce (and growly) protective streak. In This Week’s Episode… You’re in for a treat as Coach Sam welcomes special guest Dr. Derek Price to the show. They exchange stories of how & where they first met, the tragedy that struck early on in Derek’s life, the story of his college & NFL days, how Derek overcame significant setbacks, how he met his soulmate, and how mentors have played an essential role in his life. We also discover the one voice he has always listened to and trusted… and how that one voice has led Derek to live an extraordinary life. * Be the Man Challenge, an adventure that will take you through six weeks of self-discovery and introduce you to some of the conversations and belief systems inside of the Warrior’s Way. betheman.com Parable #1: Tragedy Strikes Early When Dr. Price was seven years old, life as he knew it changed drastically after the death of his father. At his young age, he stepped into the role of the man of the house and instantly becoming a father figure to his two younger brothers. Day-old bakeries, dented can sales, and tortillas & butter for breakfast were the norms. However, he had no idea they didn’t have a lot of money. During Coach Sam’s childhood, he and his family escaped from Iran to Canada, where they declared refugee status. Life changed in a moment for them. They found themselves driving around the neighborhood a couple of times a week picking out items from other people’s garbage. Most of the time, they ate cornflakes with sugar and water. QUESTION What did you experience early in your life that has helped shape who you are today? Parable #2: NFL At the age of nineteen, Derek felt he was at the right place at the right time. He had earned a scholarship, was excelling at football, and was presented with a very tempting offer. Following his intuition and the advice of one of his mentors, he made a decision that turned out to be a big pivotal moment in his life. In his first year as an NFL player in Detroit, with four games left, Derek was running off on a kick-off and dove into a pile of guys. What happened next would ultimately change the course of his life. “I was 22, I was living in the moment, I had a one year contract, and I had to keep it under wraps.” QUESTION Where in your world are you following & trusting your intuition and/or the advice of a trusted mentor? Parable #3: Soulmates It was on a blind date right out of high school that Derek met the love of his life. It was on that first date that he remarked to her, “Wouldn’t it be funny if we ended up getting married?!” “I was a football player, she was a cheerleader with dreams of her own, and she chose to throw in the towel and say, “I’m on your team. Let’s do this together!” Today, they are happily married, have three daughters, and live a life that they absolutely love. QUESTION Where and when did you meet your wife? Did you know right away that she was the “one” for you? Parable #4: Three-Legged Stool In Dr. Price’s practice, he has developed his personal executive program – The Three-Legged Stool – which represents how he looks at humanity. All three of the legs must be balanced. The platform of the stool represents you, your total life experience, and your personal growth. The three legs represent the following: 1- Health & Wellness, 2- Relationships, and 3- the Pursuit of Happiness, the leg that often gets overlooked. QUESTION How do you pursue happiness? What does that really mean to you? Parable #5: Habits Derek: You have to create habits, and habits develop in baby steps. Baby step habits done over a long period of time become a reality that ultimately shapes you. In the process of building small habits over a long period of time, you have a sustainable, life long change. When someone wants to make a change in their life, they already know their desired destination, but that just don’t know how to get to that destination from where they are today. I believe you shouldn’t talk about something unless you’ve been about something, and I take that to heart inside of my “Walk in Your Shoes” program where I mentor you, it becomes your life, and where there is ultimately a completion. QUESTION As you look across all areas of your life, what are you doing to create those baby step habits? * Be the Man Challenge, an adventure that will take you through six weeks of self-discovery and introduce you to some of the conversations and belief systems inside of the Warrior’s Way. betheman.com Parables from the Pit:“ “What if you gave yourself permission to pursue happiness which means bringing harmony into your existing life?” —Sam Falsafi “In my discussions with thousands of patients, the reality is, I have discovered that brilliance comes from simplicity.” –Dr. Derek Price
This episode features an excerpt from an episode of Scholars at Play, a podcast focused on the critical discussion of video games and their place in society. The podcast is produced by three Vanderbilt graduate students: Derek Price (German Studies), Terrell Taylor (English), and Kyle Romero (History). They got together in 2016 around a shared interest in video game studies after Derek Price put up a few signs in the grad student carrels of a video game controller. Since the campus didn’t have a graduate seminar in game studies at the time, they decided to create their own, as a podcast. They launched Scholars at Play that year with some help from Vanderbilt’s Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy. This episode of VandyVox features the first segment of their second episode, “Borders and Rituals in ‘Papers, Please.’” For more Scholars at Play, listen to their podcast on SoundCloud or visit their website, scholarsatplay.net. And for more on the origin of the Scholars at Play podcast, listen to an interview with Derek, Terrell, and Kyle in Episode 34 of Vanderbilt’s edtech podcast, Leading Lines.
The Darius Foroux Show: Master Your Productivity. Master Your Life.
Derek Price, who was a British physicist, historian of science, and information scientist, discovered something about his peers in academia. He noticed that there were always a handful of people who dominated the publications within a subject. Price found out the following (now called Price's law): 50% of the work is done by the square root of the total number of people participate in the work. I've noticed the same ratio everywhere I've worked. On this episode, I talk about how we can use Price's Law to improve our career. Brandon reminds everyone in or around Bowling Green, KY to head out to Tidball's (#BestBarBG) on Friday night of April 8th to catch his full band set from All Around the Dinner Table as well as a full band set from Why They Came, a solo set from Sempervivi's Derek Price, and our friends Year of October from Nashville.RSVP on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/events/1890062117886693Brandon then attempts to multi-task and use a terrible iPhone app to record a conversation with Derek while cooking for a Wrestlemania party. Brandon almost burns his kitchen down, and Derek explores how people react to someone being a musician similarly to how people react to someone being a wrestling fan.Weekly Download:"Found Me Out" by All Around the Dinner Table (2015)Get the Album: http://apple.co/1WKXCJzHelp support our efforts at the label by contributing to our page on Patreon. As we wrap up an exciting year, we're publishing a three-part special edition of the podcast using content produced from the road on our 2015 Songwriters Tour with Andy Barnett from Why They Came, Brandon Miles from All Around the Dinner Table, and Jon Russelburg. This episode will focus on our opening night in Evansville, Indiana as well as our stops in Lexington, KY and Cincinnati-ish (Batavia/Owensville/Jackson) Ohio.Jon finds out about his new job as an editor for Popular Woodworking Magazine, we discuss why we're so lucky to do what we do not he road and still get to come home to pretty amazing lives, and we also enjoy some fun (but perhaps chaotic) conversations with Eric Delong (with new music available at http://ericdelong.bandcamp.com), Meagan DeLong (commission some original art from Meagan by visiting http://www.megwilliamsart.com), and Derek Price (keep up with Derek's music at (http://sempervivi.com).Starting in 2016, our podcast is moving to a weekly format! Enjoy a new episode every Friday with a wider cast to help discuss relevant topics in a more timely fashion. Help support our efforts at the label by contributing to our page on Patreon. Brandon is joined by Rory Willis, producer of All Around the Dinner Table's "From the Mouths of Shepherds" LP (as well as other great releases from bands like Buffalo Rodeo and Anthologies) and drummer for great bands like Alone (on tour this November) and Bass Invaders.Andy leaves us hanging on this one, so we brought in Derek Price from Sempervivi, joining us from a hotel in Louisville, KY. Despite a very real struggle with ragweed allergies and an inconsistent "wiffy" connection, we manage to put another fun episode on the books. We talk about the usual. You know, stuff like recording and performing, why YouTube's live stream service sucks, why WiFi sucks, why technology is awesome, why technology sucks, etc... We also learn a little bit about Rory and his background in the Bowling Green music scene, why he loves self-help books, his idea to replace our Patreon support with a candy bar fundraiser, and more.Brandon also has a continuity issue with Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Man, this episode has it all!http://www.badapplerecords.netPATRON-EXCLUSIVE CONTENT: Get an exclusive early download of "Hungry Coyote" from All Around the Dinner Table's upcoming "From the Mouths of Shepherds" LP (https://www.patreon.com/posts/hungry-coyote-by-3562140).Don't forget to download our Patreon-exclusive bootleg EP from Jon Russelburg and the Sons of Man, "Live as Hell" from East Bridge 2015 (https://www.patreon.com/posts/jon-russelburg-3517336).Gain access to this and other exclusive content, discounts, and rewards at http://www.badapplerecords.net/support!
Brandon and Andy keep Melissa awake to gripe about the new tattooed Joker image that leaked last week before sitting down with Derek Price (formerly of Stellar Kin and Redfoot) to talk about his new recording project - Sempervivi! Derek and Brandon share stories from their early days in Stellar Kin as well as life since the band's hiatus, along with what may go down in history as the most embarrassing story to ever hit our podcast... and just four episodes in!Derek also performs "Open Hands" from his upcoming "Artifacts" EP (currently in production for release later this year).
