Beacon professor's quest led to publication Thirty years ago, Adam McKible, a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina, stretched across a blanket outdoors to read The Letters of Davy Carr, a serialized novel published anonymously in 1925 and 1926 in a monthly magazine for Black writers and readers called The Messenger. McKible, who today lives in Beacon and is an English professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said he wasn't confident that the excerpts would contribute anything to a chapter in his dissertation devoted to the magazine. But after finishing the pages he had printed from microfilm, he realized he had found a forgotten novel written during the Harlem Renaissance and filled with details about the daily lives of Blacks in Washington, D.C. Its narrator, Davey Carr, also commented on hot-button topics such as Blacks whose skin was light enough to "pass" for white. "I realized it was a good novel, so the first thing I did was go to all my African-American literature professors and asked if they ever heard of it," McKible said. "Nobody had." McKible set aside the pages to finish his degree and begin work as a professor. In 2001, he shared the excerpts with a Columbia graduate student who knew how to use a new technology called Google and was able to identify the author as Edward Christopher Williams, the first Black graduate of the New York State Library School in Albany. In 2004, after the serial was typed into a manuscript, HarperCollins published the novel as When Washington Was in Vogue. To mark the 100th anniversary of When Washington Was in Vogue's publication in The Messenger, McKible will speak at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (March 18) at Stanza Books in Beacon. He will be joined by Eve Dunbar, an English professor at Vassar who will discuss another memorable novel published in 1925, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Born in Cleveland to a Black father and Irish mother, Edward Williams graduated from Case Western Reserve University before attending librarian school. Case Western hired him as its library director, a position he held until resigning in 1909 to become principal of Dunbar High School in Washington. Between those jobs, Williams married the daughter of Charles W. Chestnut, one of the Harlem Renaissance's best-known writers. In 1916, he became head librarian and chaired the romance languages department at Howard University. He died in 1929. Before HarperCollins published the book, McKible attempted to locate Williams' granddaughter by cold calling every Patricia Williams in Washington, D.C. After its publication, he received an email from Patricia's son in Georgia, who said she had died in 2000. He thanked McKible for the novel's publication. "I was conscious that this was somebody else's book, and I felt that it was important that it get out in the world," McKible said.

When Kathryn Wombacher suspected her husband, Walter Andrew, of having an affair in the spring of 1920, she hired a private detective to follow him on one of his many “out-of-town” trips that he'd taken in their short marriage. However, rather than follow Walter out of town, the private detective tracked the man less than a mile from his home in Hollywood, where he discovered that Walter had indeed been carrying on a relationship with another woman—but that was to be the least of Kathryn's worries.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1920. In this episode of Healthcare Americana, host Christopher Habig welcomes back a familiar and respected guest, Dr. Edward Williams of Foundation Direct Primary Care. As a repeat visitor on the show, Dr. Williams shares his unique perspective on balancing the demands of fatherhood, practicing medicine, and managing a business. Dr. Williams discusses how he integrates his family life into his medical practice, offering insights on why he chose the Direct Primary Care model to gain more control over his schedule. This flexibility allows him to be present for his children and participate in their daily activities, a priority he holds dearly. He contrasts this approach with the traditional fee-for-service model, where many physicians find themselves overwhelmed and unable to prioritize family time. The conversation also touches on the gender dynamics in the medical field, particularly how female physicians often prioritize family more effectively than their male counterparts. Dr. Williams shares his observations on why this might be and offers advice to fellow physicians—especially men—who might feel trapped in the conventional healthcare system. Listeners will find Dr. Williams' story both inspiring and thought-provoking, especially those who are considering a shift in their medical practice to regain control of their time and life. This episode is a testament to the possibility of having a fulfilling family life while running a successful medical practice, offering a roadmap for others looking to achieve the same.More on Freedom Healthworks & FreedomDocSubscribe at https://healthcareamericana.com/episodes/More on Dr. Edward Williams & Foundation Direct Primary CareFollow Healthcare Americana: Instagram & LinkedIN

He also comments on the importance of independent CPA-reviewed financials.  [15:36] When should a firm start sponsoring events?  [18:23] Santiago Sedaca discusses mergers and acquisitions in the USAID market, and he reflects on the acquisition of his company by Palladium.  [25:20] Santiago describes the process of a merger or acquisition and how to prepare for them.  [36:17] Mike asks if localization plays into acquisitions, and Santiago comments on private equity firms buying up small businesses.  [41:46] Keith comments on not being a small business if acquired and doing a test run with contracts. Santiago points out that culture is a factor.  [46:52] Edward Williams describes what happens when a client wants to merge with or acquire another firm and whether there are additional complications if a non-US firm intends to acquire a US firm.   [55:54] Christy Hollywood shares her takeaways from today's conversation.    KEY TAKEAWAYS:  Building strong relationships with prime contractors and key players in the industry is crucial for success in the USAID market. Attending industry events and networking can open doors and create opportunities for collaboration. In USAID contracting and international development, successful mergers hinge on factors like net income, reputation, and strong market relationships. Cultural fit is vital, and post-acquisition success requires careful integration planning. The sector's low net income margins and minimal involvement of investments or private equity present unique challenges in M&A activities. The importance of understanding the "why" behind mergers and acquisitions, as it can be a mission-driven decision, not just a financial one. This understanding can provide opportunities for career advancement and better development work.   RESOURCES: Aid Market Podcast Mike Shanley - LinkedIn Causal Design - Website Keith Ives - LinkedIn Santiago Sedaca - LinkedIn Williams LLP - Website Edward Williams - LinkedIn Konektid - Website Christy Hollywood - LinkedIn   BIOGRAPHIES Santiago Sedaca Executive experience in thriving organizations (CARANA, Palladium, DT Global, Wise Responder) leading strategy, developing top performing teams, and managing large technical, business development and operations teams (1000+ people), producing market-leading financial results and social impact (managed $100 million+ P&L). Since the late 19th century, scholars have thought the poetry and stories of medieval Wales, gathered in manuscripts such as the Red Book of Hergest and the Book of Taliesin, represent stories about pagan gods and goddesses – but recently this has been challenged. These books deal with magic and enchantment and contain vivid characters such as Rhiannon, the proud and wilful Arianrhod, the beautiful and treacherous flower-maiden Blodeuwedd, the decent and vulnerable Lleu Llaw Gyffes, and the supreme bard Taliesin.A lecture by Ronald Hutton recorded on 26 April 2023 at David Game College, London. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/wales-godsGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Spring 2023 debuted with more bank failures, teacher strikes in Los Angeles, and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, non-white male born in China, was #DelectableNegro "grilled" by White US lawmakers about the social media platform being used to aid Chinese espionage. Williams has spent the last 15 years touring around the US, the UK, Western Europe and Australia, blending the roots music spectrum in his own style. He's opened for Taj Mahal, The Wood Brothers, Dom Flemons, CAAMP, John Paul White, Town Mountain, John Craigie, Rachel Baiman and Lucy Daucus, and has performed at festival stages on three continents. By Davy Crockett You can read, listen, or watch Read the full story of Frank Hart in my new book: Frank Hart: The First Black Ultrarunning Star Frank Hart, at age 22, broke through racial barriers with his fourth-place finish in the 5th Astley Belt Race in Madison Square Garden, held in September 1879. Despite being black, Hart became a local hero in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. He had proven himself worthy of praise, competing on the grandest sporting stage in the world. The ultrarunning/pedestrian promoters, backers, and bookmakers had allowed for diversity in this most popular spectator sport in America of that time. But was an American public ready to accept a black champion, just 15 years since the end of the bloody Civil War, with racial bigotry still prevalent in nearly all aspects of society? Hart, an immigrant from Haiti (see Part 1), had not grown up in slavery, and had the determination to reach the highest level of the sport in 1880, if he would be allowed. After the good training he received from O'Leary, and with his recent success, fame, and fortune, he was ready to go out on his own. He hired his own trainer/handler, John D. Oliver (1860-1914), age 19, who became better known as “Happy Jack Smith.” Smith was originally from Richmond, Virginia, born to Irish parents. Within months he became recognized as the best pedestrian trainer in America. He developed a reputation for being able to keep his runners in the competition to the bitter end. J. J. Gottlob Hart also needed a manager/agent. He again turned to a very young, unproven, but dynamic talent.  He hired nineteen-year-old Jacob Julius “J.J.” Gottlob (1860-1933). Gottlob, a commercial traveler and theater man with west coast ties, took interest in pedestrianism. He would become known as the “Dean of Pacific Coast Theater managers.”  As he acquired money, he would be Hart's backer for several years. The Rose Belt With these two young men to look after him, in December 1879, Hart went to compete at the next big six-day tournament, the “Great International Six-Day Race” or “Rose Belt” held in Madison Square Garden in New York City. The manager of the race was Daniel Eugene Rose (1846-1927) of New York City, a pedestrian promoter and owner of the D. E. Rose cigarette manufacturing company. This was perhaps the largest six-day race in history with 65 starters. An expensive Rose Belt, valued at $400, was created for the winner, with seven rectangular sections. The center section included a globe with running figures and colored flags, and the words, “American International Champion of the World.” About 200 scorers were employed. Scores were displayed on dials for each runner. Each runner had a big number both on their chest and on their back. Hart was not the only black runner in the field, there were three others, Edward Williams of New York City, Paul Molyneaux Hewlett (1856-1891) of Boston, and William H. Jacob Pegram (1846-1913) of Boston, who would often run together with Hart on laps.  Pegram was a former slave from Sussex, Virginia. He won a small 60-hour race in Brighton, Massachusetts against whites, a month before Hart started competing. Pegram spoke in a thick southern black dialect that at times was mocked by the press. After the first day, December 22, 1879, Hart was in second place with 117 miles. On day two, after Peter J. Panchot (1841-1917), of Buffalo, New York, withdrew from the race, Hart took over first place. By evening, only 48 of the 65 starters remained in the race. Christian Faber On Christmas Eve, day three, the race continued, and Hart lost the lead in the evening to Christian Faber (1848-1908), of Newark, New Jersey, when he went to get some sleep. Grumbles were heard by those with wagers on Hart, worried that he would not return.  But Hart had not had very much sleep and needed it badly. He returned at midnight to kick off day four.

Yes, that would be the same sheriff that released over 4000 convicted criminals out onto the streets to “keep them safe”. In LA, the safety of the criminal far outweighs the safety of the people. Professor Paul is going to teach you how to make Ballistic Lemonade during our Brownell’s Bullet Points segment.  What had the Professor been doing out in his new workshop? Let’s find out.  Also, during our SOTG Homeroom segment, we remind you to be dangerous on demand. A Florida criminal, released to keep him safe from COVID-19, is now back in jail after being released and then committing murder. Yet again, the state has failed the people. It is up to you to keep your family safe.  Thanks for being a part of SOTG! We hope you find value in the message we share. Edward Williams, 26, of Tampa, was arrested Monday and is facing charges of second-degree murder, gun possession, violently resisting an officer, drug possession and paraphernalia possession, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. He remained in lockup Tuesday night with no bond, according to jail records. (Click Here for Full Article)   From www.foxla.com/news: The Los Angeles County Sheriff told FOX 11 that his decision to release over 4,000 nonviolent inmates from county jail has been effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19, however, he has concerns about a potential future surge of crime as a result of so many inmates being released. LA County Sheriff tells me he has released 4,276 nonviolent inmates from county jail, which equates to 25% of the inmate population. He says it's been effective in preventing spread of #COVID19, with only 11 inmates infected, but now fears a possible surge in crime. 10pm @FOXLA (Click Here for Full Article)

Karen Waldrup and then folk/Americana duo Whitherward each performed and then sat down for these interviews during the Winter 2017 NAMM show in California. Country singer/songwriter Waldrup was making her third appearance on NHTE and talked about having added saxophone to her music, plus a full-length album she successfully crowdfunded, targeted for a summer 2017 release. Ashley E. Norton and Edward Williams talk about three endorsements that they (Whitherward) got while at the NAMM Show. They also talk about a new album, living on the road (literally), and having played over 250 shows last year and probably more than that in 2017. Ashley also refers back to her NHTE Episode 6 interview and talks about the record deal she’d just signed then and how it never turned into anything!

Downtown Reading is all dressed up with fresh inviting art in the 300 and 600 blocks of Penn Street. Two artists were chosen to install a sculpture in the 600 block of Penn Street and Edward Williams is the muralist chosen from 40 applicants to design, execute and display his art in the 300 block of Penn Street. Jane Runyeon served as the art liaison to the city during a 2 year process to award the NEA grant. Jane says Edward’s ability, knowledge and depiction of a train, one of the symbols of our city, were all contributing factors to selecting him for this mural project Edward talks about the ‘art’ of creating large mural art from a design drafted in a studio. Edward bid on 3 or 4 different locations for his art and is happy that this location was chosen because the architectural bump-out on the wall lends itself to depicting a trestle bridge. Jane adds the aspect of urban renewal was incorporated, “The wall was in terrible shape and was re-stored in order that a mural might be painted on it”. Edward is motivated to paint large. While working on this particular mural he was further motivated by people walking by and giving him a thumbs up or saying “Great job!”. Edward says it’s been his experience that when people start seeing visual things going up it motivates others on the block to dress up their space as well. Thanks Edward for installing “Steam Engine” mural at 334 Penn Street! Check it out next time you are in downtown Reading. And you can check out more of Edward Willimas’ work at www.thestudio33.com

Part of the Shelley's Ghost Exhibition. 'Everybody is in despair and every thing in confusion' writes Shelley in his last letter to Mary. He was in Pisa to discuss a new journal, The Liberal, with Leigh Hunt and Lord Byron. Shelley had been delayed there by Hunt's personal situation (his wife Marianne had been told she did not have long to live) and by Byron's complicated affairs. He hints that Edward Williams might sail back to the Villa Magni ahead of him. Hurriedly concluding the letter, Shelley hopes that Mary was reconciled to staying at the Villa Magni, where he had never been happier, but where she had been ill and wretchedly depressed. In a PS he tells her that he has found the manuscript of his translation
