Earlier this month, ProPublica made waves when it published what it said was verified IRS information showing that billionaires, like Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett, pay little in income tax compared to their massive wealth. ProPublica described the info as “an unprecedented look inside the financial lives of America's titans.” The article caused quite a stir, both because of how they got the data and the larger discussion regarding wealth and taxes. Recent discussions of taxing the rich or even proposing a wealth tax have sparked plenty of philosophical conversations-- but what would that realistically look like for America's uber-wealthy? On today's episode of the Taxgirl podcast, Kelly is joined by Steve Rosenthal to chat about tax and wealth and how they intersect. Steve is a senior fellow in the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center at the Urban Institute, where he researches, speaks, and writes on a range of federal income tax issues, with a particular focus on business taxes. In 2013, he also was the staff director of the DC Tax Revision Commission. Before joining Urban, Rosenthal practiced tax law in Washington, DC, for over 25 years, most recently as a partner at Ropes and Gray. He was a legislation counsel with the Joint Committee on Taxation, where he helped draft tax rules for financial institutions, financial products, capital gains, and related areas. He is the former chair of the Taxation Section of the District of Columbia Bar Association. Listen to Kelly and Steve talk about billionaires and taxes: The ProPublica piece mentioned has been criticized for supposedly conflating wealth with income. Steve shares the difference between earned income and unearned income, and why we tax them differently. Simply: income tax only taxes income, not wealth. We often assume that billionaires and millionaires are in the highest tax bracket, but that's not always the case. Income is the basis of tax liability in the American system, so wealth without income is not taxed as heavily. In 2007, Jeff Bezos famously said he paid no income tax, even though Amazon stock more than doubled in the same year. Steve says about the 16th amendment, “We have an income tax, not a wealth tax.” How do these tax principles apply to all taxpayers? Kelly and Steve discuss taxable events and how investments like stocks and real estate aren't considered taxable income until those assets are sold. What the Biden Proposal says about gains-at-death for the mega wealthy, and what the threshold really is. As a W-2 earner, all income is reported to the IRS, and many of these folks are not reliant on investments or asset growth for their wealth. But the wealthy are usually not reliant on a wage or salary. How are investment sales taxed differently than income? What are the arguments that the tax system isn't “fair,” versus the arguments that it is fair? Should the wealthy be taxed more heavily? Would changing the top tax rate alter how much the uber wealthy would realistically pay in overall taxes? In the philosophical discussion of whether billionaires should be taxed more, what would that even look like? There is so much opportunity in the U.S. for financial success, although recently wealth inequality has been “exacerbated.” What would happen to dynastic wealth if assets were taxed upon death? The 25 richest Americans are collectively worth over $1 Trillion. It would take over 14 million working class Americans to match that kind of wealth. Does taxing appreciated assets target small business and upper middle class more than it does the billionaires? The top 1% of Americans own 50% of the stock market. Most Americans would identify themselves as middle class, and a lot of folks don't have an abundance of assets. Addressing wealth inequality is complicated with the way the tax code sits right now. Does Steve think the ProPublica story helped or harmed the odds of Biden's proposal going through? What would the next steps potentially look like for the proposal? More about Kelly Phillips Erb: Kelly is the creator and host of the Taxgirl podcast series. Kelly is a practicing tax attorney with considerable experience and knowledge. She works with taxpayers like you every day. One of the things that she does is help folks out of tax jams, and hopefully, keep others from getting into them. For instance, when the priest holds up the host and says, “this is my body which will be given up for you and for many,” why is that different from when the wine is held up and he says, “this is my blood given up for you?” 34:31 – Why do many parishes not offer the cup to drink during communion, and how is that scriptural according to John 6 41:13 – Does Steve have any suggestions on how to teach children on the sacrifice of the mass? 46:34 – How can we as Catholics, who accept Jesus in the holy sacrifice of the mass as our lord and savior, be able to evangelize our secular and Pagan world by being tabernacles of his presence? 49:27 – Steve, how have we separated from our Protestant brothers and sisters over the sacrifice of the mass and how can we help them understand the truth of the consecration? …

Produced by Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier After a few technical hitches, we managed to speak to legendary Yes guitarist, Steve Howe, about his brand new solo album, 'Love Is'. It features his son and recent YMP interviewee, Dylan Howe, on drums and Steve's fellow Yes member, Jon Davison, on backing vocals and bass guitar. If you like Steve's solo work, you'll absolutely love this new album, which is packed full of his trademark multi-guitar work and contains half instrumental tracks and half songs. Steve is pleased with his lead vocals and we can see why! Does Steve enjoy writing, producing, engineering and performing? How does Steve choose from his incredible collection of guitars? Are there any clues to future Yes happenings? Portrait of English progressive rock musician Steve Howe, taken on February 3, 2020. (Photo by Will Ireland/Prog Magazine) Here's the Press Release: Legendary Yes guitarist Steve Howe has announced he is to release Love Is on 31st July through BMG Records. Love Is is Howe’s first solo album since the all-instrumental Time in 2011 and has a balance of five instrumental tracks and five songs. The album will be available as CD - gatefold digi-sleeve with 12 page booklet and LP – Black vinyl 180gm with gatefold sleeve, liner notes and lyrics. Link to Steve Howe Official store pre-orders: https://SteveHowe.lnk.to/D2CPR Link to Amazon pre-orders: https://SteveHowe.lnk.to/LoveIsPR Steve Howe sings lead vocals and plays electric, acoustic and steel guitars, keyboards, percussion and bass guitar on the instrumentals while Yes vocalist Jon Davison provides vocal harmonies and plays bass guitar on the vocal tracks. The album also features Dylan Howe on drums. Many years in the making, Love Is brings together a consistently strong and polished listening experience, forging the very best from the writing and playing throughout the album. This may well be considered the real 'stand out' album of Howe’s solo career. The instrumentals keep a highly progressive rock guitar style to the fore, with songs that explore stories of lives lived and lives only just begun. Love Is A River is the central longer song with several textural shifts, featuring a theme played on 12 string and steel guitars. “I called the album Love Is because it hints at the central idea that that love is important but also love of the universe and the ecology of the world is very important,” says Steve Howe. “Alexander Humboldt went around the world and recognised we are destroying the planet but that was 200 years ago! We are still destroying the planet and, I suppose, my songs show the yearning I have for the love of nature and how beauty, art and music all stem from nature. There is a theme about those things, love, beauty, ecology, nature and wonderful people. “Love Is A River just seemed a very important track to me, a sort of quintessential track with lots of moods, lots of interesting things going on with steel guitars and acoustic guitars. Further tracks grew from time spent writing in my studio. “See Me Through looks at the idea that we get through life by not driving ourselves that hard but attempting to achieve things with people who help you along the way and Imagination is dedicated to my granddaughter Zuni. It’s about how I see some of the things she’s experienced in her short seven years.” “I invited Jon Davison to sing harmonies with me and add bass on the songs. If he was singing on the songs I thought why doesn’t he play bass as well and it turned out nice. He’s been with Yes for seven or eight years and he’s a great guy, great performer and a great interpreter of Yes songs. “I’ve been singing for years, mainly in harmony but I’ve sung lead on lots of my own albums before and I feel that, as I’ve got older, I’ve got a grip on that and, hopefully, it’s improved over the years.” The album includes many distinctive Steve Howe signatures among the in...

Love it or hate it, testing is an integral part of a teacher's life, and an even more integral part of a student's life. Hate it because it's time consuming, irritating, overblown, and in many schools poorly managed. There is also that awful problem of negative washback. Love it because it provides everyone with useful feedback on what is happening with the learning process, and also because students use it as a way of motivating themselves to learn. So how do you feel about testing? How does Troy feel (about testing, but about life in general). Does Steve feel? In this podcast we don't get quite that existential, but there is a lot to consider, to ponder, and to waffle about (too).

"Just gotta keep going. This isn't our home." A long journey with a horse . . . through brutal environments . . . and encounters with ruthless people . . . no, we're not talking about Hostiles again. But after taking a month off we wanted to pick up where we were. So this month Steve and JJ are taking on the emotional cliff dive known as Lean on Pete. With a cast that includes Steve Buscemi and Steve Zahn, you would think that JJ wouldn't have to endure another brutal film that breaks your heart. But this film is not what you would expect. Steve and JJ are challenged to identify anyone they would recommend it to. Not because it is a bad film, but because it's hard to imagine anyone you would want to willingly put as a participant in Charly's journey to find a home. Is it worth watching? Definitely! Does Steve learn more about the geography of the Pacific Northwest than he expected? Most definitely! Is there an unexpected connection to R. Kelly that makes JJ a bit uncomfortable? Possibly. The approaching yuletide holidays haven't given Dylan any more concern for either her busy schedule as the co-proprietress of a retail clothing store, nor for her relationship with a dude who isn't him. So with that in mind, of course he has no compunction about getting her on a private plane and flying her to Mexico for huevos rancheros, authentic sombreros, and a Mayan fertility statue into which he can stuff an extremely tiny amount of heroin. Gina takes a break from her suspicions about Sonia -- now working off her debt to Donna at the store (when she's not using the space to bone a dude after hours) -- to be jealous of the attention Dylan's paying Kelly and hang around close enough to swoop in as soon as Kelly tells Dylan she's not interested in taking him back. Gina's so willing to take Kelly's sloppy seconds that she even agrees to take exactly the same trip to Mexico Dylan took Kelly on and receive the gift of exactly the same Mayan sculpture, filled with exactly the same smuggled contraband. It's just Gina's bad luck that the store gets robbed when she knocks off early to go fuck around in Cabo and drive Kelly back into Matt's arms. Through all this, Noah is using Gina as his TaskRabbit for Donna's surprise birthday party, because he is just as oblivious about Gina's feelings about her cousin as Donna herself is. And in the background of everyone's week is a dance marathon AIDS fundraiser at the club for which Steve accidentally makes an overly generous pledge. Does Steve then try to scam a charity? You know he does. Does Steve follow through on this one?Steve also doesn’t want his opinion to take away from Kevin loving the band and vise versa. How do you feel about that? Do you ever show a friend a band that you just love and if your friend doesn’t like it, does it steal away any love you may have for the band? Today’s episode will be a little different. Instead of doing a typical interview, Matt Tringali and I will just have a chat about whatever comes up. We each have some topics in mind and things we want to learn from each other, but we’ll let the conversation flow naturally. I’m recording this mastermind phone call, so you’ll get to be a fly on the wall for our conversation. Before Matt got into property management about a decade ago, he worked in real estate sales. In that role, any time he didn’t get a deal, he would take that person out to lunch and ask how he could have gotten their business. The overwhelmingly common response led him to use Facebook today to stay top-of-mind for potential clients. Given the format of our conversation, you probably won’t be surprised that masterminds are one of the topics we’ll dive into today! If you’re not already sold on how effective they are, I think this conversation will help open your eyes to a way to grow both your business and your knowledge. You’ll learn how valuable peer-to-peer interaction is, and how to start a mastermind of your own if you can’t find an appropriate one to take part in. We’ll also talk about topics like appreciation, equity, and cash flow, what’s in Matt’s resident benefit package (and how tenants have reacted so far), how virtual offices can function and the learning process involved, the role of a field agent, Matt’s thoughts on review culture, and much more! Learn More About Today’s Guests: Matthew Tringali on Facebook Group 15 Real Estate on Facebook Group 15 Real Estate In This Episode: [01:18] - Matt and Steve start things off with some small talk about decor and out-of-town auto-responses. [02:12] - What is Matt doing on Facebook to get new business or brand awareness? [04:16] - Matt digs deeper into brand awareness and why it’s tricky to put a value on it. [06:56] - We hear about what Matt’s working on these days, and he and Steve chat about peer-to-peer interaction. [08:48] - Does Steve have any advice for people out there who aren’t in a mastermind on how to get started with one? [11:31] - Picking the deep-dive topic for a mastermind is pretty democratic in Matt’s case, we learn. [14:31] - Steve doesn’t want to get distracted from growing the management business, so he has some resistance to doing a deep dive into his sales process on the tenant side, he explains. [16:49] - We learn that Matt has a real estate agent who helps with the lease renewal process. [19:01] - How has Steve been doing with getting clients to buy more properties? He answers, then Matt shares his own perspective. [22:25] - Property managers have a duty to make a conversation about leverage, equity, and so on as simple as possible so owners can understand it, Steve points out. [23:11] - What does Steve use for his monthly newsletters? [23:45] - We learn about Matt’s resident benefit package, and how little pushback there has been so far. [27:01] - Steve and Matt talk about virtual offices. [30:34] - Every now and then, you get some pushback about having a virtual office instead of a physical presence, Matt points out. [32:17] - Matt explains that the field agent is designed to be the eyes and ears of the property manager. [33:48] - What are the latest tools that Steve is into for property management? [35:41] - Steve talks more about the two aspects of HubSpot. [37:22] - What is Steve doing in terms of video content to go along with the blog articles that he has been talking about? [39:26] - We learn about Kolbe scores, and how they relate to having different kinds of content for your audience. [41:21] - Matt talks more about his videographer and what they’ve been doing with video content. [42:52] - How are reviews going for Matt, and what is his thought process around them? [45:45] - We hear more about driving reviews to satellite offices. [47:18] - Which consultants that Steve has worked with has he found to be the most valuable? It's episode #2 in our Endorphin Book Club series! We start with a breakdown on 3 intro topics including the Sir Walter Miler, the Beach to Beacon 10K, and the newly announced elite fields for the Chicago Marathon. Does Steve think Jordan Hasay has a chance at the American Record, held currently by none other than Deena Kastor herself? Then at 37:55 into the episode, we turn to our interview with Deena Kastor to discuss her new memoir - Let Your Mind Run. Deena talks about her years in Alamosa, how she feels about her Olympic Bronze medal, her proudest race (hint: it wasn't the marathon in Athens), how running translates to life and so much more. If you weren't a fan of Deena before, then you will be now.
WOW, this conversation took a sharp left and didn’t return! But in a really good way. We had other plans for todays Episode, But… it… got... interesting!! It would have been wrong to not this conversation unfold in the random direction it took. So, here’s a mash up of topics as we get super reflective on life following Bryn’s return from his 3-week Honeymoon. Here’s how the conversation went down: Starts by Steve’s mentioning his bulking plateau, feeling good but getting reflective… 1️⃣- Having meaning for life and a purpose to drive intent to our actions and goals 2️⃣- Getting numb from successes. Needed a stronger and stronger stimulus 3️⃣- Bible & Faith - Gods punishment was to make us self-conscious. The good and bad of faith - life rules, lessons, dogmatism 4️⃣- Does Steve have a scale intent behind his mission, or can making a small difference to just a few be enough? 5️⃣- Wedding reflections - The transition from Boy to Man. Realisation of selfishness. Mitigating the 7 year itch. Being brutally honest 6️⃣- Honeymoon reflections - Can we have the tribal care and community of a third-world country and yet met our business and financial goals? 7️⃣- Steve’ massive pendulum swing from hyper-career focussed to family and passion first. Is it creating an internal conflict? Feeling less significant? 8️⃣- You can’t have true balance - some things need to sacrificed so you can build momentum in areas you care about. Then reprioritise. 9️⃣- Steve’s positive experience with Binaural Midday Napping and how he is now getting two mornings.
In Episode #333, Steven Eisman, managing director at Neuberger Berman and portfolio manager for the Eisman Group, is known for predicting the global financial crash of 2008 and for being portrayed in the book and the film, The Big Short. In this interview, he addresses several questions, including: Are markets more ethical today than they were in the past? Are there systemic risks in today’s market that could see a repeat of 2008? Have regulators done a good job? And the burning question that everyone seems to want the answer to: Does Steve believe there is another “big short” opportunity approaching? Tune in for the answers to these questions and more.

This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Steve Groff, a farmer and cover crop pioneer who has also worked with the University of Maryland on extensive cover crop research. Steve founded Cover Crop Coaching in 2016 and has spoken to audiences across North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, and many other parts of the world on the use of cover crops across the full range of agricultural applications. In this episode, we talk about important management tools to incorporate with cover crops, the causes of erosion in a soil system, and how farmers can supply consumer demand for nutritional value. We also discuss farm economics, the books Steve read that started him in cover cropping and a step by step guide for growers who want to start developing healthy soil. Steve started no till in the early 80’s - Solely to stop soil erosion A key moment for Steve was 3 years into doing no till - He noticed his soil was beginning to “mellow out” Today we can transfer to no till much faster than ever before In 1995 Steve started researching cover crops - he noticed after a drought year that he had 28 bushels more of corn preceding the previous 3 years Steve is all-in on cover crops! 8:20 - Erosion is a symptom of a bigger problem Healthier soil isn’t going to blow or wash away We don’t have a runoff problem, we have a water infiltration problem Steve is encouraged by seeing mainstream agriculture start to clue in 10:00 - Can we completely resolve erosion with the use of cover crops? We can greatly reduce it Not just cover crops - there are many other practices however they are a key component. Cover crops are a tool - you need to manage them properly Having a living root in the soil as long as possible is important Having diversity of species is important - we can enhance this with cover crops! Less/zero soil disturbance is important 12:30 - What are some of the other important tools farmers should incorporate? Fertility management - (Ex: Avoid anhydrous ammonia, high salt fertilizers) Once you get your soil functioning, you can start unlocking things that were locked before, such as allowing more access to certain minerals Steve isn’t saying everyone needs to be no till - but does advocate it. Tillage is a destructive event 15:10 - How important is it to have a diversity of cover crops? There is a time and a place for single species cover crops Steve always plants mixed species You have to play around and see what works on your farm! How many species do you need? Going beyond 6-8; advantages start to level off. Mixed species doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive Cover crop mixes can be thought of as a “one plus one equals three” solution 20:30 - What is something that Steve has puzzled over? The link to human health from how we grow plants and nutrient density Steve noticed that the USDA doesn’t say how they establish the averages for nutritional value Steve is looking into creating branding for nutritional basis 26:00 - Does Steve believe it is possible that farmers will be compensated for growing quality Generally, Steve thinks yes. Majority of plant genetics are made for yield - so it may take awhile to get right There are some plant breeders that are now breeding for quality over yield 30:50 - Buyers care about flavor and aroma - These are the same markers of nutrient density Flavor and aroma is what makes repeat customers These can also be traced back to plant genetics and breeding - it’s important to build from the ground up Big similarities between microbiome of our gut and the microbiome of soil 35:50 - What is something that has surprised Steve in his work? The importance of soil health - What tools like cover crops and no tillage are capable of Once you get the system working, you don’t need as much input! Steve expects to continue being surprised as he tries to discover more 38:00 - What does Steve believe to be true about agriculture that many others do not? Reducing input is not going to lead to “mining out” the soil That the use of insecticides and fungicides can be reduced “Would you take chemo to prevent cancer?” 41:40 - What does Steve believe to be the biggest opportunity in agriculture today? Cycles always come and go Regenerative agriculture and growing with reduced input Steve believes there is a bright future ahead 45:00 - What is a book or resource that Steve would recommend? Growing a Revolution: Bringing Our Soil Back to Life by David R. Montgomery The Biological Farmer: A Complete Guide to the Sustainable & Profitable Biological System of Farming by Gary F. Zimmer Stubble Over the Soil: The Vital Role of Plant Residue in Soil Management to Improve Soil Quality by Carlos Corvetto Lamarca The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming by Masanobu Fukuoka 46:50 - What ideas or technology is Steve excited about for the future of agriculture? Advancement on cover crop equipment 50:10 - Is Steve having fun? YES! Steve finds it fulfilling to help farmers and being a steward of God’s earth 51:10 - What would Steve recommend to a farmer starting down this path today? Ask: What do you want to accomplish? Good to prioritise when you’re new Time of year will determine species to plant Only apply a new practice to the amount of plants you can afford to lose Learn all you can - Talk to and follow those who are achieving what you want to do 54:40 - What does Steve wish John had asked? How the economics work out - “How can I do this, and flourish?” 56:20 - What has been the economic impact of cover crops on Steve’s operations? Looking at 5 years - Fertilizer went down 50%, and chemicals went down 37% 58:20 - What was the cost of these results? Growing your own cover crops cuts down on cost 60-80 lbs of nitrogen instead of 175-200 lbs Average corn yield is between 185-200 For pumpkins: Can cut nitrogen rate to 45-50 lbs Feedback & Booking Please send your feedback, requests for topics or guests, or booking request have a Podcast episode recorded LIVE at your event -- to production@regenerativeagriculturepodcast.com.
