“Your health is your wealth.” Like us all, the Trainer to the Stars got hit by the 2020 pandemic that is still with us in 2021. “It has been an interesting year,” Steve Jordan says understatedly to kick off the interview.  However, throughout this conversation, Steve shares with Wade the importance of keeping a positive mindset through it all. “I took a step back  (during lockdowns.) It was really enlightening and uplifting to hear you read my resume and background because we don’t often get an opportunity to reflect on where we came from. I can write down what I’ve done axnd read it out loud, or you could write it out, and it sounds so much different when somebody else reads it.” “Some might shy away from that, but I think it was awesome to hear because it acknowledges the fact that I’ve done the work and been able to take advantage of awesome opportunities. I’ve been able to be on multiple platforms to help people create health and wellness, abundance, and lifestyle approaches that I teach to my clients. Steve’s incredible two-and-a-half decade career as a health and fitness coach began as a personal trainer at the White House! Along his journey, Steve became a media celebrity in the fitness niche, appearing on programs like Dr. Oz, The Today Show, Men’s Fitness, Self, E!, along with dozens of additional media outlets, podcasts, books, and appearances. His passion for helping people live a better life is infectious. Steve doesn’t follow the herd when it comes to the latest health data and practices.  In his private health and fitness studio in Los Angeles called Westwood Private Fitness, along with his second location OC FIT in Corona Del Mar, he works with elite clients.  Plus, Steve hosts his top-rated health and fitness podcast called The Steve Jordan Experience. On that show, Steve talks with other health care professionals about all things related to health and fitness.  Steve is an articulate and inspiring speaker, which is why he frequently gets asked to speak at such places as the University of Maryland, William Morris Endeavor, and Robb Report Health & Wellness Summit. He leads regular retreats at Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort and Luxury Spa.  In this podcast, we cover: How to get back into a fitness and health routine after lockdowns The first and most crucial question Steve asks his new fitness clients How Steve came back from a debilitating car wreck A peek behind the curtain at Steve’s upcoming new book  What does a typical day look like for the “trainer to the stars”? When time is short, what areas of health does Steve prioritize?  Some signs that older exercisers can use to gauge how hard they should train How Steve adapted his business and his personal life to the pandemic restrictions One of the essential spiritual outlooks to living your best life Getting Back in Shape After Gaining “the Pandemic 30” Pound Average Wade asks Steve: “Do you have any insight into how someone comes back to fitness after last year, or maybe it’s their first time? What strategy would make sense for them to employ to reach their best self? Steve replies,” That’s an terrific question. I’ve addressed it many times with clients through my 25 years in this profession. People are going to stop working out at times. It’s inevitable. We don’t always have the momentum and motivation to work out.  What I recommend for people is NOT to pick up where they left off. Many people want to dive into an hour-long workout or 90 minutes of exercise or jump back into Zumba class, whatever it was they were doing before - they want to pick up where they left off at the same intensity and length of time. They want to use the same weights. It’s what people commonly gravitate to because of familiarity. But I recommend taking two steps back, take your time, shorten the workouts, and ease into it.  If you want to start running, walk first. If you’re going back to a gym, do the light stuff first for a few weeks. I don’t like my clients to get ultra sore after the first day. That’s not how I measure success. Success should be measured by consistency. That’s what’s most important. So start slow and simple. Then think about how you can progress smoothly and safely. Don’t injure yourself.”  “Sleep is so important.” Steve explains why his approach to fitness starts with sleep: “I remember studying in college and pulling late-night study sessions with friends for an exam. Everyone would be stressed and cramming until two a.m. At 11 p.m., I would always be like, “I’m out.” Because I knew nothing else is getting in my brain at that point. I would rather wake up on a good night’s sleep and take that test with maybe less knowledge and make good educated guesses rather than sit out here till two, three in the morning and try to cram stuff in and go to an exam feeling tired. I had an innate understanding of how important sleep was before the knowledge we have gained in the past ten years. So again, sleep is essential. Seven, eight hours. The amount depends on the individual. It depends on what makes you feel good. I would say seven to nine is a good range.  When I wake up now at age 46, the first thing I do in the morning is stretch in bed. Not because I’m hurting, but so I won’t hurt. I pull my knees to my chest because when you’re lying down, I learned this from my older clients and who have had physical problems.  Frequently it is the sleep that’s causing a client pain because they’re in a position of laying on one side and their shoulder collapses and their head bends awkwardly, and they’re lying on their stomach while sleeping. Their back is arched. All those contorted positions in sleep put us in restricted states. So I stretch first thing in the morning for about two to three minutes.”  Steve proceeds to describe further how his day plays out once he gets out of bed.  If you’re ready to get back to a more healthy and fit lifestyle as communities begin letting go of heavy pandemic restrictions, Steve Jordan is the perfect guy to tune into. The Lean Startup movement is integral to the foundation of modern entrepreneurship. Despite its proven success there are still many businesses, including both startups and established companies, that struggle to apply Lean principles and continue to build products through the waterfall approach. In today’s episode, we are joined by Steve Blank. In addition to being an author, entrepreneur, and professor, he is also widely recognized as an early father of the Lean Startup movement. In our discussion, Steve reflects on the current state of innovation in startups and enterprises and what can be done to improve it. Hear what it means to be an ambidextrous organization and why Steve holds it in such high regard. As we dive into the premise of Lean, Steve explains why on your first day as a startup, all you have is a series of untested hypotheses, whereas for an established organization the departure point is from a series of knowns. Later we discuss the concept of innovation theatre and why it’s more prevalent in established companies. Listeners can also expect to hear why the same processes for innovation that do well in startups, don’t work well for large organizations, largely because they are designed to minimize risk. Steve also shares examples of how the VP of sales can undermine innovation and why senior leadership in large organizations generally needs a lot of reform. We were honored to have Steve on the show and had a highly engaging and informative conversation that we know you’ll enjoy!   Key Points From This Episode: Meet today’s guest Steve Blank. The current state of innovation in startups and enterprises. What it means to be an ambidextrous organization.  Every company needs to be able to execute and innovate concurrently. Steve compares how the startup landscape has changed from when he started. Why startups still tend to have a technology-first approach, rather than customer first. The departure point for the premise of lean is that on your first day as a startup all you have is a series of untested hypotheses. In an established organization the departure point is from a series of knowns, like your existing customer needs, your supply chain, etc. Why founders are often too certain and why it’s a problem. Finding a repeatable and scalable business model as a startup. A discussion on the concept of innovation theatre. Steve shares an anecdote explaining the ‘cargo cult’ to illustrate how large corporations misjudge what it means to have a lean approach. Why large organizations can withstand innovation theatre for longer than a startup. The same processes that do so well in startups for innovation don’t work for large organizations because they are designed to minimize risk. Large organizations are not designed to innovate with speed and urgency. With innovation, you want to take reasonable risks. Why senior leadership needs to be reformed. How the VP of sales can undermine innovation in a company. When you have a disruptive innovation inside your own company you need to protect it from certain heads of department. How Steve describes an innovation doctrine or an innovation pipeline and how to construct and adopt it.   Links From Today’s Episode: Steve Blank Steve Blank on LinkedIn Steve Blank on Twitter Daniel Elizalde IoT Product Strategy Template

Steve struggled mightily with addiction for decades, and finally hit rock bottom and decided it was time to change. So how did he do it? Some fancy-schmancy and exclusive rehab clinic costing thousands a day? Spending a year with a Buddha Monk? Nope, he went all-in on changing his health and making it a priority. He even went so deep he owned a Crossfit for a while. You have heard me say it time and time again... without your health and focusing on it daily life is going to be a very hard road. Admiral Richardson discusses how he operationalized creating a high velocity learning dynamic across the entire US Navy. He also presents his theories on how we need to balance compliance and creativity. And finally, he presents some amazing examples of how to strip away the barnacles from processes, those layers of controls and supervision that may have crept in over the decades.   Also joining the conversation is Dr. Steve Spear, who has written extensively about the US Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program program in his book The High-Velocity Edge.   ABOUT THE GUESTS   Admiral John Richardson served as the Chief of Naval Operations for four years, which is the professional head of the US Navy. He also served as the Director of Naval Reactors, responsible for the design, safety, certification, operating standards, material control, maintenance, disposal, and regulatory oversight of over 100 nuclear power plants operating on nuclear-powered warships deployed around the world.   Since his retirement in August 2019, he has joined the boards of several major corporations and other organizations, including Boeing, the world's largest aerospace company, and Exelon, a Fortune 100 company that operates the largest fleet of nuclear plants in America and delivers power to over 10 million customers.    Dr. Steve Spear (DBA MS MS) is principal for HVE LLC, the award-winning author of The High-Velocity Edge, and patent holder for the See to Solve Real Time Alert System. A Senior Lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School and a Senior Fellow at the Institute, Dr. Spear’s work focuses on accelerating learning dynamics within organizations so that they know better and faster what to do and how to do it. Journalism is one of the keystones of American democracy. For centuries, reporters and editors have kept those in power accountable by seeking out the truth and reporting it.   However, the art of newsgathering has changed dramatically in the digital age. Just take it from NPR Senior Director of Audience Insights Steve Mulder — whose team is helping change the way NPR makes editorial decisions by introducing a streamlined and accessible platform for data analytics and insights.   Steve and I go way, way back (Lycos anyone!?) — and I’m so excited to welcome him on this episode of Experiencing Data! We talked a lot about the Story Analytics and Data Insights (SANDI) dashboard for NPR content creators that Steve’s team just recently launched, and dove into: How Steve’s design and UX background influences his approach to building analytical tools and insights  (1:04) Why data teams at NPR embrace qualitative UX research when building analytics and insights solutions for the editorial team. (6:03) What the Story Analytics and Data Insights (SANDI) dashboard for NPR’s newsroom is, the goals it is supporting, and the data silos that had to be broken down (10:52) How the NPR newsroom uses SANDI to measure audience reach and engagement. (14:40) 'It's our job to be translators': The role of moving from ‘what’ to ‘so what’ to ‘now what’ (22:57) Quotes from Today’s Episode People with backgrounds in UX and design end up everywhere. And I think it's because we have a couple of things going for us. We are user-centered in our hearts. Our goal is to understand people and what they need — regardless of what space we're talking about. We are grounded in research and getting to the underlying motivations of people and what they need. We're focused on good communication and interpretation and putting knowledge into action — we're generalists. - Steve (1:44)   The familiar trope is that quantitative research tells you what is going on, and qualitative research tells you why. Qualitative research gets underneath the surface to answer why people feel the way they do. Why are they motivated? Why are they describing their needs in a certain way? - Steve (6:32)   The more we work with people and develop relationships — and build that deeper sense of trust as an organization with each other — the more openness there is to having a real conversation. - Steve (9:06)   I’ve been reading a book by Nancy Duarte called DataStory (see Episode 32 of this show), and in the book she talks about this model of the career growth [...]that is really in sync with how I've been thinking about it. [...]you begin as an explorer of data — you're swimming in the data and finding insights from the data-first perspective. Over time in your career, you become an explainer. And an explainer is all about creating meaning: what is the context and interpretation that I can bring to this insight that makes it important, that answers the question, “So what?” And then the final step is to inspire, to actually inspire action and inspire new ways of looking at business problems or whatever you're looking at. - Steve (25:50)   I think that carving things down to what's the simplest is always a big challenge, just because those of us drowning in data are always tempted to expose more of it than we should. - Steve (29:30)   There's a healthy skepticism in some parts of NPR  around data and around the fact that ‘I don't want data to limit what I do with my job. I don't want it to tell me what to do.’ We spend a lot of time reassuring people that data is never going to make decisions for you — it's just the foundation that you can stand on to better make your own decision. … We don't use data-driven decisions. At NPR, we talk about data-??? decisions because that better reflects the fact that it is data and expertise together that make things magic.  - Steve (34:34) Resources and Links:  Twitter: https://twitter.com/muldermedia

Here's what you don't want to miss: 1:46 Why men must do "hard shit" to have a breakthrough and how social pressure is killing masculinity.  3:33 How the pendulum in life can swing too far to either side and create a human that's incapable of communicating or leading  5:40 The process you can go through to find you’re true capabilities and what we mean by "do hard shit"  9:55 How the decision to "break the cycle of bull shit in your life" can give you and your family a life they've never experienced  11:00 How adversity helps a man reach his higher-self and how our past has programmed us to see the world through a distorted lens 14:05 How Steve's upbringing "f**ked him up" and ultimately created his superpower that accelerated his success 14:53 How manufacturing adversity in your children will help them manage real hardship as they grow older 16:05 How disassociation can serve you well in business but negatively impact you in personal relationships 20:51 The men who've broken their cycle of vices and the common thread that ties them all together 27:38 What to expect from The Project and how negotiating with your inner voice will determine your success 30:44 How the human spirit will reject voluntarily suffering and how grateful it is after reaching the other side 32:46 How physical adversity will push someone to be truly honest with themselves  34:25 How men think differently than women and how compartmentalizing through hard shit can open your mind  38:00 The Subject Matter Experts within The Project and the intensity that lives among the team 38:58 How blood isn't necessarily thicker than water and how two unrelated people suffering together can create a bond 42:43 How being intentional in the four critical areas of life will help you create fulfillment  45:29 The first time Steve and Bredros met at Fitness Business Summit and how laser beam focus is key to success 48:00 The importance of emotionally and physically committing 100% to whatever work-life mix you're on 48:59 What it means to both Bedros and Steve to be a role model father 55:39 How a circle of influence should hold you to a higher standard and how to build a new tribe Connect with Steve Eckert mdkproject.com/ https://www.mdkproject.com/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/steve.eckert1/ Connect with Bedros Keuilian:   Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bedroskeuilian/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bedroskeuilian/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/user/KeuilianInc Twitter https://twitter.com/bedroskeuilian LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/bedroskeuilian/ Buy Man Up and get Bedros' High-Performance Leadership Course for FREE: https://manup.com/ Subscribe to My Channel for weekly videos: http://www.youtube.com/bedroskeuilian/?sub_confirmation=1

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

Have you ever done a science experiment? "Sure," is the most likely response, from anyone, to that question. But if we were to define "experiment" as Steve Jones, "The Space Teacher" does, the answer would be "no".   Steve, who teaches STEAM at Hopewell Middle School in Milton, Georgia, is a lifelong space-science enthusiast.  He is both a NASA Solar System Ambassador and freelance Principal Investigator for experiential STEM learning organization Magnitude.io. What that translates to, in his science-enrichment classes, is a lot of discovery.  As students research, no one is sure what they'll find.  Even Steve can't tell them what the final result will be.  Because, as he says, in real science, "We don't know what's going to happen at the end.  And that's the exciting thing." In February, Steve and his class saw an experiment culminate in a space launch.  Through Magnitude.io, their class was among the ones researching new crops that might grow well in microgravity.   Magnitude.io sent the selected crop to the International Space Station, in its ExoLab-8 experiment. And today, that crop is the first-ever red clover to be cultivated aboard the ISS. But what's even more exciting?  Steve's students can monitor its progress in real time, as they grow their own red-clover crop in the classroom, under conditions that simulate the ISS environment. On this edition of Over Coffee®, we cover: How the space program first sparked Steve's imagination; Why Steve (who originally didn't care much for math!) came to incorporate it into his passion for science; The best creative challenge that faced Steve, in interesting non-science-oriented students in science; How Steve's unusual perspective on failure in his classes encourages students in engineering; One of Steve's favorite STEAM lessons from the NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador program; A new experiment which the students are doing in cooperation with NASA and Miami's Fairchild Botanical Garden; How Steve gave the students ownership of their own creativity on this particular project; What first started Steve off as a STEAM teacher, when beginning his career in education; The work of Magnitude.io and how Steve first became involved in the program; How Steve's seventh-grade class began research with Magnitude.io's ExoLab 6 experiment; How to get involved in the Magnitude.io program, if you are an educator; One "failure" that led to better research in Steve's science class; Some additional educational resources, including Zooniverse, which relates science to various arts and humanities topics among its citizen science exploration.

But if you put Steve in front of a computer, he might accidentally break it.By 2020, Steve and Coco were able to build out three teams, and only a month into 2021, they’ve been able to close 5 contracts. Gavin’s strategy as a coach was to find out how to support Steve and Coco so that they could focus on what they do best: talk to sellers. No matter how discouraged he got, Coco reminded Steve that the next “No” could be a “Yes”. If you’re ready for a coach to help you build a system that minimizes your weaknesses, contact us through REI Network, and let’s see if we’d be a good fit.Do you need a wholesaler in the Ohio area? Send an email to Steve and Coco at CCBPropertySolutions@gmail.com. They’d love to talk to you. What's Inside:—Building a customizable system has let Steve sidestep his greatest weakness: anything tech-related.—How Steve and Coco use an admin VA to keep their teams running smoothly.—The team that Steve and Coco have built around themselves makes it possible for them to help out with their grandchildren and sometimes catch a round of golf.

ACE Editor Steve Lang truly means it when he says, “If I can help somebody get a job, it's almost just as satisfying as if I got the job myself.” As we discussed in part 1 of our marathon interview together, not only did Steve play a huge role in getting me my first television editing job on Burn Notice (despite the fact I didn’t have enough experience), but he has helped countless numbers of his assistants get into the editing chair and move on to successful careers. If you missed part one, you might want to go back and listen to that one first, where we discuss in detail, how Steve has navigated a varied career in post-production while avoiding getting pigeonholed, and how it's possible to use skills over experience to get the jobs you want (if you know how to tell the right story). What you'll hear in part two is Steve's philosophy on mentoring his assistants, how he approaches his editor's cuts, and his best advice for making the transition from assistant to editor. We also dive into Steve's work habits, his lifestyle choices, and how he has learned to balance his intense focus abilities to avoid wreaking havoc on his health and relationships. Steve has generously shared his knowledge and experience through mentorship over the years and I'm immensely grateful that he has given his time to talk with me and share his wisdom with you. Steve's playbook that he gives to every assistant he hires to help them get into the editor's chair. Steve's philosophy on putting his editor cut together. How Steve helps his assistants learn and grow as editors. Advice for seasoned assistants having trouble getting into the editor's chair. The one thing Steve finds more valuable than experience or skills when hiring an editor. Why you have to love the process of editing to keep your sanity and passion alive. Steve talks about his battle with Crohn's disease and how it affected his career and his life. How the pandemic has affected his work hours. How he manages his habit of working late and trying to balance his health and creativity. What is next on the horizon for Steve. Final advice from Steve for new editors and assistants. [optin-monster slug="u1u6n4yv97rxxz4icynf"] Guest Bio: Steven Lang was born and raised in Stony Brook, New York on Long Island. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1992, but his real education began the six years he spent working at a video store from the age of sixteen to twenty-one. It was there where his love of movies began and planted the seed that the entertainment business was where his passion lies. He moved out to California two weeks after graduating college without a single contact or connection to pursue his dream and never looked back. One of his first industry job was at a TV movie production company that owned their own Avid editing systems and gave him the opportunity to learn his craft. Self-taught, he literately opened up the Avid manual and started from page one. He spent many late nights and weekends learning the system and editing anything he could get his hands on. Eventually, he was given the opportunity to assist on a TV movie, and his editing career was born. Twenty-four years later, Steven has edited over 120 hours of television while working with many of the top Writers/Producers/Directors/Creators in the industry including David E. Kelley, Billy Crystal, David Milch, Steven Bochco, Ridley & Tony Scott, Jerry Bruckheimer, Ray McKinnon, Larry Charles, Ben Watkins, and Matt Nix. He most recently edited the pilot and season 1 for the "Turner & Hooch" reboot for Disney + directed by McG. Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared by Debby Germino and published by Glen McNiel. The original music in the opening and closing of the show is courtesy of Joe Trapanese (who is quite possibly one of the most talented composers on the face of the planet).

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying your holidays—whatever you celebrate (or don’t celebrate!) Steve and I didn’t celebrate holidays for years but now we’re all about the holiday spirit so I hope you’re getting some R&R right now. Last week, things got personal when I had part one of my interview with my partner in business and in life, Steve Wasterval. We talked about our origin story as a couple and as collaborators. We also dug into all kinds of stuff about his evolution from a creative who gave his paintings away, never signed them and didn’t have any knowledge of—or desire–to sell his art to being someone who is actively building a career as an artist. This week, I’m continuing the conversation with Steve but we’re going to focus more on how he’s building his art career. We’ve applied a lot of the Badass Business strategies that I teach entrepreneurs to his art business and it’s had a huge impact! Stay tuned because I’ll be back with part three of my convo with Steve where we’ll discuss the building of Wasterval Design and get Steve’s perspective on the whole thing for the first time EVER! I hope you are all snuggled up and ready for this holiday season. I don’t know about you but that’s how I’m doing the holidays this year. Just keeping it low key and easy. I’m definitely bummed that we can’t travel and see family. I’m sure you are, too. Every year, we usually go see my big family down in Virginia. We have 30-something people at these gatherings. I help my abuela make empanadas. We play games. My uncle Carlos tries to get us to do karaoke (it never works) but it’s still really fun. I’m sad to miss out on all of that—especially because my son is almost three and he’s finally at an age where he can enjoy hanging out with the other kids and I don’t have to carry him around all the time. BUT, hopefully we’ll do that next year. Steve and I are all about the deep chill in life right now anyway so we’re kind of excited to just have lots of comfort foods and warm beverages. In honor of this time of year, I thought I would do something a little different from my other conversations and bring you in my world a little bit. I’ve been meaning to do for awhile which is why I’m happy to have my most special guest on this podcast—my partner in business and life, my source of inspiration, my biggest supporter—often my nemesis and biggest obstacle—and my all around favorite person, Steve Wasterval. Our students Gigi and Steve are both proof that there is no certain mold you have to fit to be a real estate investor. As new wholesalers, Gigi and Steve both came from very different backgrounds. An ER doctor, Gigi picked wholesaling because it was a completely new field that challenged her. And Steve had to learn to embrace technology, or at least find some ways to work around his technophobia. Both Gigi and Steve have built teams that play off their specific strengths. Steve loves talking to sellers, so we’ve created a team for him that just feeds him homeowners ready to sell. A master at building relationships and rapport, listen to how Steve is able to find a new buyer in only a half hour, and still manages to close a property on time.Gigi is willing to try anything once, and that’s how she found herself with her first double close that let her make $24,000 without bringing a dime of her own funds to the table. We built a team around her that helps her improve her follow up system and stay on top of the offers she’s made.Real estate investing really will work for anyone who takes the time to build a team and a system. Our job as coaches is to help you plug in the holes in your business, just like we’ve done for Gigi and Steve. If you’d like to see if we’d be a good fit for your business, send us an email and we’d love to see if we’re a good fit for each other. What's Inside:—Offers hinge on a seller’s motivation, not on your actual offer.—See how Gigi and Steve build teams around their personal strengths.—How Steve was able to find a buyer for a deal that fell through in only a half hour.
