Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray review two articles from Cell that focus on the genetic basis for ridge development and pattern formation. 'The developmental basis of fingerprint pattern formation and variation' by Glover, et al., and 'Limb development genes underlie variation in human fingerprint patterns' by Li, et al. Our understanding of these complex processes continues to grow, and these papers further support our field and our conclusions.

Have you ever read Lord of the Rings and noticed that each time the hobbits meet a new race along the road, it's the OLDEST RACE EVER?! I wrote a song about that bragging. There are a lot of famous male composers in history. Apryl Knight will introduce you to some of the incredible female composers that you may not have heard of. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. That is usually how it rolls. I've many songs to sing And a wife in the stream So whistle a diddle-diddle to call me. Oh I'll never give up the mountain Or say I'm the oldest alive For you'll probably see A hobbit climbing a tree And it won't matter diddle [whistle] It won't matter diddle [whistle] It won't matter diddle how high! 17:46 - Marc Gunn “Middle Earth Bragging Song” from Soul of Harper 20:19 - SUPPORT THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my supporters on Patreon. But I can't name even one woman. So I got really excited to talk with Apryl Knight at Sherwood Forest Faire a few weeks back. She had me captivated by her knowledge of women in music through centuries. Apryl Knight has been playing music since she was 3 years old. She plays the bowed psaltery and the hurdy gurdy at Renaissance festivals, SCA events around the country. She does it solo as well as with her band Tulstin Troubadours. She started telling me about women in music in history. I decided to sit down and find out more through an interview. She shared some of her favorite medieval women in music, plus thoughts on traveling as a solo female on the road. And her favorite app while traveling as a vegan too. The day we have all been waiting for. Tonight we launch ASOTU CON, but this morning we still have the UAW to check in on, dealers seeing the EV tax incentives in a new but old light, and Spotify testing some voice replication features! The UAW strike has expanded to include 38 GM and Stellantis parts distribution centers across 20 states, affecting the dealerships' service business, however, talks with Ford have seemingly made good progressThis action highlights the issue of wage disparities. Parts depot employees typically earn between $16-$24 an hour, compared to up to $32 at assembly plants.Eric Ray, a worker at GM's Ypsilanti Processing Center, stated: "We do just as much work as they do in the automotive plants. We do the same thing, we should be treated the same way."UAW President Shawn Fain is committed to eliminating varying wage rates, emphasizing that "The PDCs in particular, they've been stepped on a lot in the past."Notably, UAW made "real progress" in negotiations with Ford Motor Co., choosing not to add any Ford plants to the targeted strike, highlighting Ford's willingness to address key union prioritiesHarkening back to the time of Cash for Clunkers, some dealers fear that EV tax incentives may take a long time to come through.Beginning in 2024, eligible EV buyers can transfer federal tax credits to dealers, using these funds as a down payment. The move is part of the Inflation Reduction Act's provisions to support new and used EV purchases.Tyler Slade, operating partner at Tim Dahle Nissan Southtowne, expressed nervousness, citing history and concerns about waiting for government reimbursement: "You're going to have plenty of dealers that aren't going to be comfortable with that risk … waiting for the government to pay, much like Cash for Clunkers."Organizations like AIADA and NADA are actively working to streamline the point-of-sale transaction and ensure swift and accurate reimbursement from the government to avoid the issues faced during the Cash for Clunkers program.Spotify is launching a new beta test that will take the voice of a few select podcasters and translate them to other languages using AI.The innovative tool is initially translating podcasts into Spanish and French, with German translations in the pipeline. It not only translates the podcast into different languages but also synthesizes it in the podcaster's own voice, providing a genuine and immersive listening experience for global audiences.Concerns about safety and privacy have led to a measured release of this technology. Spotify and OpenAI are currently limiting the availability of this tool, testing it with a select group of podcasters, ensuring it meets standards and expectations while safeguarding users' privacy and information.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg are at the 2023 IAI conference in National Harbor, MD with Erin West and Ashley Church of Gap Science. They've developed a series of classes and an entire virtual conference dedicated to training for forensic supervisors and management. How many people should be reporting to one supervisor? What resources are available to forensic professionals? What if you're supervising a discipline that you're not trained in? Listen to the discussion and then join the FREE conference during Forensic Science Week.
Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray bring the podcast to the California State Division of the IAI. Tom Busey joins the panel, and they discuss one of Tom's recent papers on an alternate method for calculating a fingerprint likelihood ratio. What if you didn't have to make decisions in fingerprint comparisons anymore? Big thanks again to the CSDIAI for inviting us to hold this panel discussion and for putting on a great conference.
Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg discuss the recent article from Tom Busey - Tracking the growth of visual evidence in fingerprint comparison tasks. Examiners were shown features one at a time and asked to reach conclusions after each one. The study measured differences from the order of features revealed, their diagnosticity, and their clarity.

PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION (Ripped straight from Wikipedia) MIKEY The Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory follow a distress call with the identification of the Time Lord the Corsair to an asteroid outside the universe. After landing in a junkyard, the TARDIS shuts down and its matrix disappears. The asteroid, called House, removes the matrix, and places it in the body of a woman called Idris. MARC The Doctor discovers the Corsair and hundreds of other Time Lords on the asteroid were murdered by House and that two inhabitants of the asteroid, Uncle and Auntie, are constructed from the body parts of Time Lords. Upon learning that the Doctor is the last Time Lord and that no more will ever arrive, House transfers its consciousness into the TARDIS to escape from the rift. Amy and Rory are trapped inside as the House-controlled TARDIS dematerializes. Uncle and Auntie are allowed to die. MIKEY The Doctor learns that Idris contains the personality of the TARDIS's matrix and that they can talk to each other for the first time. With minutes before her body fails, Idris reveals that House had stranded many TARDISes before, and that its pocket universe is hours away from collapsing. The Doctor and Idris work together to construct a makeshift TARDIS from scraps, and then pursue House. MARC Aboard the Doctor's TARDIS, House threatens to kill Amy and Rory. He plays with their senses as they try to flee through the corridors, and then sends an Ood called Nephew after them. Idris makes a psychic connection with Rory to give him directions to a secondary control room, where he and Amy are able to lower the TARDIS shields. This allows the Doctor to land the makeshift TARDIS in the secondary control room, which atomises Nephew. MIKEY House deletes the secondary control room as he prepares to break through the rift to the main universe, which the Doctor anticipates. The TARDIS's safety protocols transfer them to the main control room, where the dying Idris releases the TARDIS's matrix back to the TARDIS, destroying House. MARC A remnant of the TARDIS's matrix, in Idris' body, states that she will not be able to speak to the Doctor again but will be there for him. Idris's body then disappears as the TARDIS matrix is fully restored. THANK YOU PATRONS Mikey: Marc and I make our living as full-time musicians. Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray eventually discuss the results of the recent NIST Evaluation of Latent Friction Ridge Technology. But first there are a couple of detours. Glenn discusses recent testimony regarding questionable nanogram testing for the presence of drugs. Eric talks about the Cousins By Blood podcast and his involvement in that case. Once the discussion returns to NIST testing, the guys review the differences between the most recent tests and the previous round in 2012. Follow along with the discussion by viewing the results at: https://pages.nist.gov/elft/elft_1_x/results/
Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg tackle three new Black Box / Accuracy studies from Austin Hicklin, et al and Noblis. Results from research into the accuracy of forensic handwriting comparison, footwear comparison, and bloodstain pattern comparison have been recently published. The guys break down the nuances of this research and how its similar and different from the latent fingerprint and palm print black box accuracy studies.
Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray are joined by Alan McNamara to continue discussing the case that sent him to jail. Alan shares his story from the day the police first knocked on his door through the trials and appellate hearings. His first-hand account of this miscarriage of justice is an eye-opener for forensic scientists and for everyone with an interest in the criminal justice system anywhere in the world. Images and reports from this case are available at patreon.com/DoubleLoopPodcast.
Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg continue their discussion of the Alan McNamara case from the UK. This time they start with the trial and then go through many of the expert witnesses that got involved in this case. Why do all the test lifts from the jewelry box have a wood grain in the background, but there is no grain in the evidence lift? Does the hook or Chinese character shape mean anything? How important is testimony about the homeowner's cleaning schedule? Can latent prints survive regular cleanings? Should there be questions about the accuracy of the latent print identifications to the homeowner? Eric then reads some of the internet comments that were made when the Alan McNamara case was first featured on the BBC's Panorama. Join us again on the next episode where we interview Alan McNamara.
Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray discuss the case of Alan McNamara from the UK. In this episode we cover the details of the burglary and how the police focused on Alan McNamara. Despite many issues in the latent print evidence, charges moved forward. The prosecution's entire case was based on a single latent print with questionable documentation.

PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION MIKEY - The book opens at Haven Mining Colony moment's before Shepherd Book's death, then flashes back 2 years to tin interior of the Serenity, where Book has a conversation with Jayne about whether or not he'll go to hell, and then walk in on Mal and Zoe roughing up an arms dealer during a deal gone bad, whereupon he returns to his quarters to pray. MARC - Then the story flashes back 2 more years, to Southdown Abbey, where we witness Book's discussion with the Abbess about his decision to leave the Abbey and return to the world. As he exits the Abbey, he walks right past Kaylee who says, “You're coming with us.” MIKEY - Another ten years earlier, and we watch him get into a drunken brawl with an alliance soldier who recognized him. They fight, and the officer kicks him unconscious in the street. When he wakes, Book is in a shelter and has a spiritual moment over a bowl of chicken soup. He eats the soup and walks the streets, stopping under the neon glow of a cross, presumably over the door to the Abbey. MARC - Then, six years earlier, we witness Book as an Alliance officer, being harshly reprimanded for organizing an action that cost 4000 lives–the very action mentioned by the Alliance officer ten years later in the street fight. Book asks for investigation powers, to uncover the moles, but is stripped of rank and kicked off the Alliance vessel, an attempt to cover up their embarrassment. He is forced into an escape pod and jettisoned. It crashes on a nearby planet, and he stumbles across the sand, alone. MIKEY - Four years earlier, we watch Book as an Alliance cadet, physically beating a prisoner during an interrogation while two officers discuss how driven he is, how tactically brilliant, and how arrogant. MARC - Four years before that, we see Book in street clothes, a long brown coat, fighting three alliance soldiers. He beats two of them easily, and tells the other to run. He then shows up at a resistance meeting where they're discussing getting an operative, a mole, into the Alliance to rise through the ranks and feed them information. MIKEY - Book volunteers, and they replace his left eye with a biomechanical robotic one, that secretly transmits everything he sees to them. He'll need a new background, though. His is too connected to the resistance, too traceable. He stalks and kills a young traveler and assumes his identity, the identity of Derrial Book. MARC - Six years prior, we watch a couple of young street thieves robbing a couple at gunpoint and then running from the police. One of them is named Henry, and he uses his skill and daring to escape, abandoning his accomplice. Later, in a diner, he is recognized by a police officer who receives his picture on a communication device while sitting next to henry at the counter. He reaches for his gun, but Henry has already drawn and cocked his own. “Don't,” he says. MIKEY - The exchange was observed by another diner, and afterwards, that man has a conversation with Henry in the streets outside, and hands him a flyer, trying to convince him to join the Independence movement. Henry declines, and returns to his apartment. From the stairwell, however, he sees a police team battering down his door to arrest him. He looks at the flyer for the Independence movement and slips out of the building, unnoticed. MARC - And finally, Ten years earlier, we witness young Henry returning home to a shabby, rundown apartment, expressing relief that his abusive father is asleep. He slips into a curtained off room and listens to music on headphones, finding escape. His father wakes and beats him, and then, when his father passes back out, Henry packs his things and leaves, determined to make a life for himself beyond his abusive father and poverty. PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION MIKEY - Hank, Bobby, Eric, Presto, Diana, Sheila, and Uni. Dungeons & Dragons is an American animated television series based on TSR's Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. A co-production of Marvel Productions and TSR, the show originally ran from 1983 through 1985 for three seasons on CBS for a total of twenty-seven episodes. The Japanese company Toei Animation did the animation for the series. The show focused on a group of six friends who are transported into the titular realm and followed their adventures as they tried to find a way home with the help of their guide the Dungeon Master. A final unproduced episode would have served as both a conclusion to the story as well as a re-imagining of the show had the series been picked up for a fourth season; however, the show was canceled before the episode was made. The script has since been published online and was performed as an audio drama as a special feature for the BCI Eclipse DVD edition of the series. Watch “The Dragon's Graveyard” on YouTube. Watch “Requiem”, the final unreleased episode. They were called Ireland's Musical Ambassadors. The Irish music world mourned last October in 2021 when Paddy passed away. I posted my own sorrows for his passing on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast Facebook page. Jon Pilatzke responded. Jon is a fiddler and an Irish dancer. He played music with The Chieftains for 20 years. I asked him to submit music to the podcast. I asked Jon if he might be able to share a story or two about playing music with Paddy. He humbly shared this inspiring story of a Celtic music legend. 21:59 - Jon Pilatzke “The Canadian Set: Fisher's Hornpipe / Cotillon d'Avila LeBlanc / Reel du Forgeron (The Blacksmith's Reel)” from Amongst Friends 25:59 - STORY OF QUEEN OF THE PIT I was performing at Tucker Brewing Company at the beginning of last year, when who did I see in the audience, drinking a pint, Jeff Shaw of The Muckers. I first connected with Jeff a number of years back when he too was living in New Orleans. We both had an early introduction to Celtic music through an album of Irish drinking songs. But it wasn't until Atlanta that I finally met him. And I was really surprised to see him in my audience. At that time, I was trying to find artists to collaborate with on my album Selcouth. One song stood out. That was “Kilty Pleasure”. I'll talk more about it in a moment. But I emailed him the next day and asked if The Muckers might be interested in collaborating. And I'm so happy they agreed. There aren't many Celtic bands in Atlanta that are making a splash. But The Muckers, they are definitely the go to band. They sound amazing. But I'm sure it also helps that they are a Celtic Punk band. That's probably why they were on a cruise with the Celtic Punk icons, Flogging Molly, as Jeff will explain. 29:49 - “Queen of the Pit” by The Muckers from Irish Goodbye 33:41 - SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE The musicians on this podcast are happy to share their music freely with you. You can find their music on streaming music sites. But streaming is a way to sample the music. If you hear something you love, these artists need your support. Please visit their website, sign up to their mailing list and buy something. You could buy digital downloads, a shirt, a sticker, a pin, a songbook, jewelry, or even the classic physical CD. Your purchase allows them to keep making music. And if you're not into the physical stuff, many artists accept tips or are on Patreon. So please support the arts. If you have questions or comments, drop me an email. Save 15% with an annual membership. 34:27 - FINDING BEERS WE CAN ALL CAN ENJOY Have you ever been to the Cheesecake Factory? I like the place okay. But I'll be honest. I get a bit overwhelmed. They have a 10 page menu with SO MANY items. I can see why it's so popular. There's something for everyone there. I can find something fun and so can my picky kids. In some ways, The Lost Druid Brewery in Avondale Estates, GA outside of Atlanta reminds of the Cheesecake Factory. They have SO many beers to choose from. There's something for everyone. In fact, the head brewmaster, Rob, will tell you a story about why they have so many beers to choose from. 36:40 - GIVING BACK Next Stacia will tell you how the brewery gives back to their community. Speaking of giving back… 39:30 - WHAT IS THE CARBON ALMANAC? I was listening to Seth Godin's Akimbo podcast a few weeks back when he announced a new project–The Carbon Almanac. It piqued my interest. I am extremely concerned about the impact we are making on our environment. Not as much for my sake, but for kids and their kids. What kind of world do I want to leave behind? We are causing major damage to our planet and atmosphere. It will affect everyone some day. But the good news is that we can make a difference. We can make positive change. Not just as individuals but as a community. The Carbon Almanac at its base is a book. It's a book about how we can affect change on our planet. But it's also a book designed to start discussing how we can make change together. If you too are concerned about Climate Change, I want to invite you to check out the Carbon Almanac website to get involved. Or at the very least, you can pre-order the book like I did for when it comes out in June. Order the Carbon Almanac now or check out the webpage at thecarbonalmanac.org . 40:59 - “Heart of Fangorn” by Brobdingnagian Bards from Memories of Middle Earth 44:20 - WHAT IS IRISH DANCE? I've played Celtic music for over twenty years. I remember how Riverdance was all the rage when I started playing Celtic music, I never quite understood it. I am a singer. I've fallen in love with the traditional tunes. But I'll be honest, I don't know much about Irish dance. My daughter Inara loves to dance. We started her on ballet a year before the pandemic started. She quickly found it slow and boring. She has a lot of energy. So a year ago, we signed her up with Atlanta Irish Dance by Burke Connolly. She connected with it instantly. I wanted to find out more about Irish dance. So I contacted Emma Burke, one of the co-founders of the school. Emma is a certified Irish dance teacher and internationally certified Irish dance adjudicator, which allows her to judge Irish dance competitions world wide. During her Irish dancing career, Emma competed all over the world, winning titles throughout. Atlanta Irish Dance is the Premiere Irish Dance Academy in Georgia and one of the top Irish Dance Companies in the United States. They have an exciting performance based program run through their 501c3, in which they produce lively crowd-pleasing performances for crowds across Atlanta. Their dancers and teams are ranked 1st in the Region, 2nd in North America, and among the top 10 in the World. So what is Irish dance? I'll let Emma Burke tell you more about it. You can find out more about Atlanta Irish dance at http://www.burkeconnolly.com They welcome dancers as young as 3 up to Adults into their program. They train every dancer with innovative and engaging teaching techniques that inspire each student to become their best. I attended a Father & Me Valentine's Day class with Inara. It was fantastic. Exhausting, but fantastic. 52:21 - STORY OF KILTY PLEASURE I love my kilt. I don't wear it as much as I used to when I wrote my song “Kilted For Her Pleasure”. It's become a bit of a guilty pleasure. It's largely something I wear when I'm going to a show or an event. I love it for many different reasons. Obviously, I love it becomes of Scottish heritage. Gunn is one of the clans of Scotland. That old Scotland map shows the Gunn land just Northwest of Inverness. But when I wrote the song, I realized there are other reasons. You see, the album is called Selcouth. That means, “when everything is strange and different yet you find it marvelous anyway.” That word sort of encapsulates my life. Yes, there was a time in high school when I just wanted to fit in. But when I got to college, I realized that I would never fit. I was just different. It wasn't good or bad. It was just different. And we are all a little different. We are all unique. That is a great thing. America is a cultural melting pot. It's not just white Americans. People from around the globe have immigrated to our country, just like my family did 150 years ago. I love traditional Irish music. But 15 years ago, a trad musician sat me down to tell me I wasn't playing Celtic music. I didn't fit the mold. He was right. But that didn't make my music any less Celtic. I believe in inclusion. Not exclusion. I'll be honest. The racism that our last president ignited and promoted was a big reason for this song. I was afraid that my people, the Scots and Irish of the South, were a part of that bigotry. So I wanted a song that waived a banner of what it truly is to be Scots-Irish in America. Our groups were once oppressed by the majority. Now we are a big part of America. And I believe it is time to realize we don't have to oppress other minority groups to stand out. We can all be strong and proud of our unique heritages and embrace all of our differences. That's what the kilt says to me. It's a sign that I am a true American, and I am Celtic forever. And I love and respect you and your heritage, whatever it is. 55:26 - “Kilty Pleasure” by Marc Gunn & The Muckers from Selcouth If you enjoyed that song, I really would greatly appreciate it if you would buy the album. 59:28 - NEXT TIME We have some comedic Celtic music and stories, just in time for April Fool's Day with Dublin Abbey. I added Gerry O'Connor, The Canny Brothers Band, The McDades, yours truly and We Banjo 3. These are from episodes #540 and #541. Listen Best Irish & Celtic Music of 2022 on Spotify or Listen on Amazon Music. 7:19 - WHAT'S UP WITH STREAMING MUSIC? The Gothard Sisters responded to a question in their mailing list about streaming music sites. The question was basically, is streaming music good or bad? I answered that question back in 2018 on my Celtfather podcast episode “Yes! Please Listen on Spotify”. But that was four years ago. So I thought I'd address it for 2022. Let's start by looking behind the streams. First, does Spotify pay artists? Technically, yes. They do. But it is a pittance. We get paid about ½ a cent for every stream that lasts at least 30 seconds. I've heard. Personally, I get about 2500 listens per month. That's about $12. During Christmas, that goes might climb to about 11,000 streams or a whopping $55. It's not much. Does it upset me that I get paid so little? No. I LOVE streaming. I love it because it's a brilliant music discovery tool. If I hear about a new band, I will go there and listen to their top tracks. I'll check to see if they have music that would work for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I listen because it's quick and easy. I don't always have my computer on hand. So this lets me find and enjoy new music with minimal effort. As long as I realize I'm not gonna get paid, I'm all good. Plus, there's always the hope that you will add my music to one of your playlists. Perhaps that playlist will be followed by others. Next thing you know, a song gets more popular. Thus far, it's only happened with my Christmas music. But it's a start. So how do I and other musicians make money? There's the big question. For me, it starts with education. That's the reason I tell you in every episode of both this and the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast to support the artists. If you find an artist you really love then, buy their stuff. CDs are still great mementos, even if you don't listen. Shirts are great for showing others how much you love the artist's music. I'm starting to offer lapel pins to go with various albums as a small artistic alternative to show your colors. You can support the artists by tipping them. Spotify added a tipping function on their website. All of the money you tip goes straight to me. I've heard of a few bands who are killing it through this method. Bandcamp makes tipping extra easy. I have a Livestreaming CD Release Party scheduled for this Thursday, February 17. Since it's a CD Release, the show will be free. But you can choose to pay any amount for the show. You can also buy a CD or lapel pin while you're watching the show. And of course, I am also a member of a few Patreon pages, like The Gothard Sisters. Because I want to help them keep making new music. The last thing I wanted to say was the third item in The Gothard Sisters newsletter, titled “What We're Doing: A Rising Tide”. “One of the things I love about creating playlists on streaming services is that we can include some of our other favorite Celtic, folk and world musicians, along with our own music. Every person who streams the playlist then discovers new artists that they may not have found otherwise. We absolutely love being able to help promote other artists this way.” I love this. This is one of the reasons I publish Pub Songs & Stories and the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I get to help musicians be heard. But I can also do that with my own playlists. I have dozens of playlists, mostly Celtic-based. Some are Firefly inspired or Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or even cats. You'll hear a lot of my music. But you will also find music from other bands that I love. You can find many of my playlists here. 12:15 - UPCOMING SHOWS FEB 2: Coffee and Groundhogs with The Celtfather @ 11 AM ET FEB 17: CD Release Party - Celtfather Livestream on Bandcamp @ 7:30 PM ET. Today he's debuting one of the songs for the album along with a story about life in Dublin. 22:24 - “Baile Átha Cliath” by Eamonn Flynn from Anywhere But Home 27:13 - SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE The musicians on this podcast are happy to share their music freely with you. I was living in Austin when I first heard the term “Buy Local”. Over the last few years, that phrase has meant a bit more to me. That's because our world has grown. The internet with all of its opportunities for us to share have made it less personal. I was reading about the demise of local news. As much as I hated holding physical newspapers, I realize we need local news. It connects us with our community. I remember my family in East Texas looking out their window. My uncle would shout out to my grandma, “Gerry just drove by. I wonder where he's going?” At the time, I thought it quite quaint and odd. But they lived out in the country. This was one of his ways of connecting with the community. I want to do the same. I want to share and promote my local community. Now of course, local and community can have different meanings than the obvious one. But today, I want to promote my first regular venue here in the Atlanta area–The Lost Druid Brewery. Not only did they come up with the phrase Sci F'Irish music, but they also did a lot for getting me started in the Atlanta area. I finally sat down with the owners Stacia and Rob, the brewmaster, with a recorder to talk about The Lost Druid and to share my love for this local community brewery. 29:50 - DIVERSITY OF THE LOST DRUID You can find out about The Lost Druid on their website at thelostdruid.com. You can see me perform there this Saturday, February 19, 2022. And stay tuned for more of these features of them and others in my local community in episodes to come. 31:42 - STORY OF BREATHING My favorite episode of Firefly is “Out of Gas”. In the episode, the crew is taking their time getting to the planet Greenleaf, the third planet in the Red Sun system. Yeah, I looked that up for the heck of it. As they're out in the Black, a compression coil blows out which knocks out life support. The crew decides to board the two shuttles and try to get help. I love the episode, because it offers a lot of character development. We see scenes from when Malcom and Zoe first buy the ship. We learn about the sexual appetite of Kaylee. We discover the moment that Inara rents the shuttle from Mal. We learn that Zoe didn't like Wash when they first met and how Jayne is lured to switch sides during a heist. It's a massive episode. You can hear a more detailed synopsis in the 8th episode of the In the ‘Verse podcast. Mikey Mason and I share our themes that inspired us while watching that episode. One of those themes became my song “Breathing”. There's a great line at the beginning of the episode during one of Malcolm's flashbacks. “Treat her properly. She'll be with you for the rest of your life," says the man trying to sell a spaceship to Mal. On the surface, the song is about treating people with loyalty, kindness, and respect. But there's a bigger story. It's about a couple who's having a tough time. Much like the broken engine in the show, they're having problems. But with love, patience, loyalty, and of course breathing they pull through. Meditation is something that helps me a lot. I get overwhelmed quite easily. What helps me when I have trouble focusing and pulling things together is to keep breathing. It relaxes me and makes me stronger. My hope is that next time you're feeling a little stressed that you too take a deep breath and sing along. 33:58 - NEXT TIME 34:14 - Marc Gunn “Breathing” from Selcouth Liesel Wilson rediscovers her Welsh heritage with Welsh tunes and a story. Marc Gunn shares the story behind the famous Scottish song “Loch Lomond”. Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg catch up on a mix bag of topics in the first episode of 2022. Emails on the new conclusion proposal, setups for photography with transmitted light, and the main topic on "qualitative statements". ANAB accreditation requires agencies to include a statistic or a qualitative statement when reporting an association. What does that mean? What qualifies as quantitative? Is this a new thing? Thanks for listening for another year!

Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg discuss the recent paper on Blind Proficiency Testing from the Houston Forensic Science Center: "Latent print quality in blind proficiency testing: Using quality metrics to examine laboratory performance" by Brett O. Gardner, Maddisen Neuman, and Sharon Kelley. The paper describes the results of over two years of blind proficiency testing in the latent print unit. No false positive errors were detected over all samples when the examiners were not aware that they were being tested. The paper also describes the use of LQMetric in measuring the Quality of the sample latent prints. A fantastic paper and a great model for other agencies to imitate.

Mikey: My Patreon patrons are still getting a new song EVERY Monday - that's 52 songs a year for as little as $1/month (though you're perfectly welcome to pledge more, if you can afford it and want to!) & MIKEYtalks podcast PLOT SYNOPSIS MARC - This plot synopsis is very simplified, and is a slightly modified version of the plot synopsis found on the wikipedia page for the episode. MIKEY - It is absolutely no substitute for watching the episode, and it will definitely contain SPOILERS if you haven't seen the episode. You have been warned. MARC - In 2007, Sally Sparrow, intrigued by a message written to her under peeling wallpaper about "the Weeping Angel", explores the abandoned house Wester Drumlins with her friend Kathy Nightingale. At the moment Kathy disappears, Kathy's grandson, Malcolm, delivers to the house a message from 1987 about the long life Kathy led. Kathy had been sent back in time to 1920. MIKEY - Before leaving, Sally takes a Yale key hanging from the hand of a statue. Sally visits Kathy's brother, Larry, at work to tell him that Kathy loves him, as the letter requested. Larry explains that he has been documenting an "Easter egg" in seventeen different DVDs containing a video message of a man having half of a conversation with the viewer. Larry gives Sally a list of the DVDs. MARC - Four Weeping Angel statues follow Sally to the police station, where they take an impounded fake police box and send DI Billy Shipton back to 1969. The man in the Easter egg, a time traveller called the Doctor, has also been sent to the past, and asks Billy to relay a message decades later. MIKEY - Billy puts the Easter egg on the DVDs. In 2007, a much older Billy phones Sally to visit him on his deathbed in the hospital. Before he dies, Billy instructs Sally to "look at the list". The list is Sally's own DVD collection. MARC - Sally and Larry return to the house and play the Easter egg on a portable DVD player. Sally discovers she can converse with the Doctor in 1969, as he possesses a copy of the complete transcript that Larry is currently compiling. The Doctor explains that aliens called Weeping Angels send people back in time by touching them, and feed off the potential energy of their remaining days. MIKEY - The Doctor also explains that the Weeping Angels turn to stone statues when any living creature observes them. He fears they are seeking the vast reserves of time energy in the police box, which is his time machine, the TARDIS, and could cause enormous damages as a result. MARC - A Weeping Angel pursues Sally and Larry to the basement where the TARDIS is. Sally and Larry use the Yale key to hide inside, while the four Weeping Angels attack. Larry inserts a now-glowing DVD, which also functions as a control disk, in the console's DVD player. The ship returns to the Doctor, while leaving Sally and Larry behind. MIKEY - The Weeping Angels standing around the TARDIS get tricked into looking at each other and are permanently frozen. A year later, Sally and Larry meet the Doctor prior to his being stuck in 1969. Sally hands the Doctor Larry's transcript, and warns that he will need it. Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray review the 2020 article from Itiel Dror and Nicholas Scurich. "(Mis)use of scientific measurements in forensic science" was published in Forensic Science International: Synergy. The article criticizes published accuracy studies in the latent print and firearms disciplines and suggests an alternative method for handling inconclusive decisions and calculating an error rate for the field. The episode details factual errors in almost every part of the article and suggests the real motivation behind these arguments. But first Eric and Glenn read some emails and catch up on our return to conferences.
Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray discuss how to testify in court after an error occurs. Examiners nervous about upcoming testimony can find tips whether you made the error or a co-worker made an error and whether it was an erroneous identification or an erroneous exclusion. The court and juries do not expect us to be perfect, and we should claim to be. It's important to be able to discuss the Quality Assurance protocols that our labs have in place. Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray are joined by Todd Weller to discuss the firearms/toolmarks discipline. Todd was involved in the NY firearms case from Episode 227 and shares his experiences there. The guys then talk through accuracy studies for firearms examiners and similarities and differences between firearms and fingerprints. Lots to cover in an extra-long episode.
Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray finally get back on track with a review of a recent article on GYRO markings. "Evaluating the Accuracy and Weight of Confidence in Examiner Minutiae Annotations" was written by Jeremy John and Henry Swofford and published in the JFI. The study measured whether examiners placed minutiae markers on true minutiae using Green, Yellow, and Red markers. It then compared the color choices of examiners against the color choices of the automatic LQMetric and DFIQI algorithms. Eric and Glenn will soon be publishing videos of themselves conducting comparisons, using GYRO, and discussing their similarities and differences. Keep an eye out for those coming soon. We watched a really bad movie. Listen to find out how bad it really was.
Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray review the newest article from Austin Hicklin, Bradford Ulery, Madeline Ausdemore, and JoAnn Buscaglia. Why do latent fingerprint examiners differ in their conclusions? reviews data from the Black Box, White Box, and Eye Tracking papers, summarizes trends through all of that research, and recommends changes for the fingerprint field.

Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray review a recent court decision on firearms testimony. REVIEW SONGS FROM THE LAST EPISODE Marc: By Amazing Grace Mikey: Ties That Bind FIVE MINUTE SHOW SUMMARY Episode 14: Objects In Space - Written by Joss Whedon PLOT SYNOPSIS (completely unedited version of wikipedia entry on it) MARC: As Serenity flies by a planet, River lies in bed listening to not-quite-audible voices. She arises and takes a walk through the ship's rooms and corridors, in her bare feet, encountering her shipmates in varied conversations with each other. Simon is relaxing with Kaylee in the common room, telling her an amusing anecdote about medical school. River suddenly "sees" them looking at her, with Simon telling her that he'd "be there right now", implying she is responsible for taking him away from his successful medical career. MIKEY: She then finds Jayne and Shepherd Book in the kitchen, where she "hears" Jayne repeat his confession to Mal about selling out the Tams on Ariel, and Book mutter an angry but cryptic statement hinting at his less wholesome past. River continues to wander the ship and is moved by the sound of ocean waves as Zoe and Wash passionately kiss on the nearby bridge. Above the cargo bay, as Mal and Inara discuss her impending departure, River sees their unspoken frustrations over their unrealized relationship. None of the people she encounters are aware of her presence - except when speaking directly to her - making it clear that this is River's mind "walking" telepathically through the ship. MARC: Fleeing the intense emotions, River runs down to the unoccupied cargo bay, where she spots a tree branch. She sees herself on leaf-strewn ground and picks up the branch, telling herself "It's just an object. Doesn't mean what you think." Suddenly, the real world returns, and she finds that she is holding one of Jayne's pistols while the crew surrounds her in a panic, trying to get her to give up the weapon. Mal takes the gun from her and discovers it is loaded and ready to fire. When Mal admonishes her for handling loaded weapons, River runs off, crying. MIKEY: As Mal comments on how alone they are, a small vessel closes with Serenity, aboard which is a man reviewing wanted bulletins for Simon and River. Meanwhile, the crew discuss the dangers of River's presence on the ship. When Zoe muses whether River has ever handled a gun, Kaylee reluctantly tells everyone about her experience during their assault on Adelei Niska's SkyPlex, when River killed three attackers with single shots with her eyes closed. The crew begin to speculate that River may be a "reader", having psychic powers, and though Simon objects, they begin to question whether she is a danger to them. While talking, the crew are being listened to: outside the hull of Serenity, the bounty hunter has left his ship and has tapped into the hull, and below the room, in the cargo bay, River is listening through the floor plating. MARC: Once the crew goes to sleep, the bounty hunter boards Serenity. He first encounters Mal, quickly knocks him unconscious, drops him into his cabin, and then locks the rest of the sleeping crew in their cabins. He surprises Kaylee in the engine room, ties her up, and threatens to rape her if she does not cooperate. Next, he disables Book with a surprise attack. Simon hears a noise and rises to check on his sister, only to be attacked by the stranger, who addresses him by name. The bounty hunter, Jubal Early, waxes philosophically on the nature of things while he demands to know where River is. Though Simon refuses to help Early, the bounty hunter threatens to kill him and rape Kaylee if he refuses, and the doctor reluctantly agrees. MIKEY: With Simon accompanying him, Early checks out the cargo bay and shuttles. When Inara tries to appeal to Early's emotional side, he smacks her across the face, and then locks her in her shuttle. The two men finally arrive on the bridge, where Early settles on a direct threat, announcing loudly to the ship that he will kill Simon if River doesn't reveal herself. River then responds over the ship's intercom, telling Early about how she was unwanted on the ship but could not bring herself to leave, so she simply "melted away", becoming part of Serenity. MARC: In the engine room, River's voice comes over the intercom, reassuring Kaylee and asking her for help. On the bridge, Early is skeptical about River's claim, but she reveals uncanny knowledge of the bounty hunter's own weaknesses. Early gradually starts to accept the possibility that River has joined with the vessel. Meanwhile, River sends Kaylee, who has freed herself, to unlock the cabins. Zoe begins to prepare an assault, but River insists that they do not use guns, and instead tells Mal of an alternate plan. MIKEY: On the bridge, River continues her conversation with Early, needling him about his violent tendencies and his past. Early realizes that River is not part of Serenity, but she has managed to sneak onto his ship, which puts him on the defensive. River reassures him that she will go with him as his bounty, as she is a burden on her shipmates, and her departure will allow them to get on with their lives. As Early starts to leave, Simon tries to stop him, but in the process is shot in the leg. Jayne wakes up and pulls the curtain off of his weapons compartment, but just uses it as a blanket and returns to sleep. Leaving Simon in the cockpit, the bounty hunter starts his EVA back to his ship, but finds Mal outside, waiting in ambush. Mal shoves Early off into space, before welcoming River back aboard Serenity. MARC: Later, in the infirmary, Simon instructs Zoe as she removes the bullet from his leg. Inara walks away from Mal as he tries to examine her cut lip. In the cargo bay, Jayne mocks Book's failure to defeat Early, despite "all them years of priest trainin'", and Book implies that he fought Early and only succumbed after a prolonged fight. Their friendship apparently restored after being damaged by the events of War Stories, Kaylee and River play jacks while Kaylee relates a racy anecdote from her past. River picks up and examines the bouncing ball, with its swirling, multicolored surface. MIKEY: Meanwhile, Jubal Early tumbles helplessly through space and says, "Well... Here I am."
