I later launched the award-winning blog Marital Musings and wrote for the wedding website Style Me Pretty. I was inspired to launch Practically Married when I noticed a lack of accessible marriage preparation tools. In the development process, I consulted with numerous therapists through my affiliation with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and gathered extensive feedback from beta-testing couples. Prior to running Practically Married, I graduated from Stanford University and earned an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern. The old saying "to get to, you must go through" is real. Therapy is a tool that many use to make sense of their behavior patterns to help discover the pieces that contribute to life's blocked path. In many cases, this process includes confronting elements of your life that you've avoided by being in "autopilot" mode. An area impacted most by autopilot is our relationships. During this episode, K.S. lewis and I discuss the importance of communication when it comes to intimacy, and how the health of your relationship with others is directly related to the relationship you have with yourself. Kay Lewis is a certified relationship coach, and psychotherapy intern scheduled to graduate in 2024 with a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Capella University. Her clinical focus is sex therapy, sexual functioning/issues, anxiety, life transitions, exploration, PTSD, trauma, sexual mindfulness, somatic practices, and culinary therapy. Kay holds memberships in both the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

The founders of Three Points Center realized the importance and necessity of creating a nurturing residential treatment facility solely for adopted teens, geared to address the complex psychological, emotional, and social issues often encountered by adopted individuals and their families. Designed to be a critical resource for those families living the day-to-day joys and myriad of complex challenges resulting from the adoption triad, Three Points Center —and everything it encompasses—was long overdue.Because adoption can oftentimes present specific attachment and trust issues, the creation of a supportive, safe and compassionate environment is essential. Natasha Helfer is a Certified Sex Therapist through the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT); a Clinical Fellow through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT); a Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist; and was, until recently, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was excommunicated from the Mormon church after treating her patients using science and evidence-based therapies which often come into conflict with the religious teachings of her former faith. Natasha's story received national attention and has been featured by dozens of media outlets. In addition to all of her experience and bona fides, Natasha is also an absolutely fantastic conversationalist, so we were delighted that she was able to join us for a lengthy in-studio interview. We had a minor technical issue that forced us to make some changes to our editing process and caused the delay in getting this out, so you may notice that the overall sound of the show is a bit different than usual. Thankfully, we were able to identify the issue so it shouldn't be a problem in the future. During the pandemic, most of us started conducting psychotherapy sessions through 100% Telehealth. "The Therapist In The Attic," Leah Leynor joins the show to talk about her transition from her thriving private psychotherapy practice office to the attic. Plus, Leah speaks about her consulting work and what private practice owners are struggling with today as the pandemic winds down. Later, we talk all about becoming an insurance-based practice and what sorts of things you need to consider before accepting insurance. Tune in as we chat about diversifying your income, negotiating rates with insurance companies, and marketing your private practice. Meet Leah Leynor Leah Leynor provides a variety of counseling services to families and individual children, teens, and adults in Cary, North Carolina. She holds a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pfeiffer University, a massage therapy diploma from the American and European Massage Clinic, and a Bachelor's degree in political science from Rider University. She is a certified hypnotherapist with specialized training in trauma counseling and family systems. She is a proud member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the North Carolina Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (NCAMFT). The Therapist In The Attic During the pandemic, Leah ultimately moved her practice from in-person to her attic. The attic was the perfect place for privacy and for consulting with clients. Whenever Leah called herself the therapist in the attic, people would laugh. For Leah, the attic was a way to connect with others in complex, uncertain, and stressful times. Plus, when you think about it, we are all somewhat "stuck in the attic." Leah hopes to relate to the varied experiences many of us have been experiencing in these uncertain times. What Private Practice Owners Are Struggling With Today Most private practice owners have a high level of anxiety because of the pandemic. Many people question if private practice is the right move for them or if they need to start changing their business plans. Plus, they have anxiety around dealing with stressed-out clients while managing their businesses' administrative side. On top of private practice responsibilities, many owners are looking after their children participating in online classes. Finally, people are considering if life will go back to the way it was or adjust to a new normal. Becoming An Insurance-Based Practice When thinking about becoming an insurance-based practice, there are a few questions you should ask yourself first. - What brought you to this decision? - Where do you see your practice going? - What would you like to see in your practice? You don't have as much control over your fees with insurance-based practices because the insurance companies determine it. So, you need to set your expectations accordingly. You can't just ask the insurance company to change your prices. Plus, you'll want to consider how your marketing and website efforts are going. You'll need to ensure the right people see your advertising when using insurance panels. Negotiating A Higher Fee From An Insurance Company Negotiating a higher fee will depend on the insurance company. Sometimes, you have to put the negotiation in writing. The insurance company may ask what your proposed rate would be. Other times, you need to find the contract negotiator representative and call them directly. Then, you can start the negotiation process. You have to find out what the process is for the specific insurance company. If the insurance company is not taking negotiations, then you should figure out why. The best time to negotiate is a couple of months before recredentialing. Relationships are hard. They're also one of the main stressors, among finances, work, and health. Relationships, when they're smooth and harmonious, can be a reflection of cause of an optimally mentally healthy state. When things are going wrong, it can be hard to think of anything else. In today's episode I talk to Melissa Johari, fellow Bloorwest Wellness Practitioner, Registered Social Worker and The Couple Wellness Expert. Melissa is a therapist, focusing on premarital counseling using the Prep-Enrich program. She implements many modalities in her practice including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Resilience in Marriage therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Internal Systems Theory, Strengths Perspective, Mindfulness Theory, Psychodynamic Therapy, Anti-Oppressive Practice, Relational Life Therapy, and Hypnotherapy. She takes a holistic perspective when working with clients, acknowledging the various systems in someone's life: financial, spiritual, physical, emotional, social, vocational, sexual, and environmental, through her Relational Wellness Wheel. When our lives are in harmony, so are our relationships. Melissa is also an Allied Mental Health Professional Member with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and offers supervision work to other therapists. In this talk we discuss lots of goodies: the 10 Steps to Resolving Conflict, Attachment Theory and Attachment Styles, The 5 Love Languages, and other frameworks for understanding how to create intentional, fulfilling and loving relationships that allow you and your partner to thrive. 56: Sacred Stress. A conversation with George Faller. George is an outstanding person to connect with during this virus crisis because while when it comes to whether or not the virus is here, we do not have any choice in the matter. However, we can choose how to respond to the chaos and sense of disconnection that it brings. George's role with the New York City Fire Department positioned him as a first responder to the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. In the aftermath of this trauma, through education, training, and personal exploration, he began to understand his mission and purpose to be supporting others through crisis and trauma. Currently, as a marriage and family therapist, speaker, and writer, George works to bring his message to others. The most simplified form of this message is that we usually find the sacred within the stressful. But first, we need to find out which kind of stress we are talking about in the first place. In this conversation, George and I explore the two different kinds of stress - distress and eustress- the value within the function of the various ways in which we approach stress both approach and withdrawal, the hidden costs of our attempts to protect and defend ourselves, misconceptions surrounding our interpretation of stress, the influence between our individual perceptions of stress and the physiological consequences to that stress, the science behind coming together for support even when the larger part of our defenses are oriented to retreat, post-traumatic growth and the meaning that often accompanies the most devastating moments of our lives. Bio: Prior to a career in the field of mental health, George spent 20 years as a NYC Firefighter and NYC Police Officer. George received his M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Iona College, where he graduated at the top of his class. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from Queens College. His experience as a FDNY Peer Counselor, particularly following the events of 9/11, sparked his passion to help those impacted by trauma. He is a certified Trainer/Supervisor/Therapist in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and founder of the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy where he serves as President. He is a Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT) and teaches classes at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in Manhattan. He is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist currently practicing in Connecticut and New York. George is the director of training at the Greenwich Center for Hope & Renewal in Connecticut and is on the Board of the Porter Cason Institute at Tulane University in New Orleans. George brings a unique and varied experience to his practice. Whether he is providing marriage therapy to Wall Street executives, leading a conference for the United States Military or equipping therapists from around the globe, his ability to inspire is far-reaching. George is also committed to bringing EFT to underprivileged populations and pushing the leading edge of effective therapy. https://www.georgefaller.com https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/foreplay-radio-couples-and-sex-therapy/id1083324677 Band of the Week: Keanu Leaves https://www.facebook.com/Keanuleavesband/ Music Page: https://music.apple.com/us/album/antigravity-machine-single/1475012751 Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com Website for The Sacred Speaks: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/
