A couple of weeks ago, I was hearing over and over in my conversations with friends how much stress and confusion and YOWZA come with the holidays. I love this season. I'm probably baking something as you read these words. I'm in. AND I also know this season comes with its fair share of extra. Extra chaos, extra scramble, extra hosting, extra outpouring, even extra grief. So I asked a question online and in private conversations: If you had the luxury of having your own relationship expert on call during the holidays, what would you want to ask? Oh, man, did the floodgates open. And my guest April Bordeau knew just what to do. April is a phenomenal therapist with over thirty years of experience. She's a founder and the managing director of Care To Change, a counseling center in the Indianapolis area, and she was kind enough to join me in a late-night recording session. We tackle all sorts of things, so buckle up and listen to this super helpful and practical conversation with April Bordeau. April is licensed as a clinical social worker. She is a Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) practitioner and certified educator and a Prepare-Enrich & SYMBIS pre-marriage and marriage facilitator. She is trained in Experiential Therapy, Crisis Intervention Teams and NOVA crisis intervention, Theraplay, and the Suicide PAIR program and is certified in EMDR. April is a QPR Master Trainer, is an approved Focus on the Family Counselor, serving on their Michigan Hope Restored marriage intensive team. April is also a Guide for Onsite who offers world-renowned emotional wellness retreats, therapeutic intensives, residential trauma care, and digital resources. April and her husband, Randy (also a certified Prepare/Enrich Marriage Facilitator, and marriage retreat facilitator), have been married for over twenty five years and they have two teenagers. In her work, therapy is viewed as a collaborative process and offers an integrated approach in which values, the search for meaning, and the power of choice are central focuses. It is her desire to offer a nonjudgemental environment that provides support, encouragement, and practical skills. — Be a human who can admit he changed his mind. This is what happens to us as human beings: life can suck and our world changes, we choose to change, our situations change. I do not believe God changes. However, what we know of God and our relationship with God can and often does change as we face the pain of caregiving and whatever else piles on. A journal gives us knowledge of both ourselves and God. These can be influential and provide the foundation for future growth as we seek God. Valeria Teles interviews Ken Hagler — the author of “Life Sucks Seek God: 5 soul-healing habits to connect you with God when life seems out of control.” Ken Hagler is an author, pastor, writer, YouTube creator, and Podcaster. He has been in ministry full-time since 1996 serving in various ministry areas. During his ministry, Ken has served churches in Kentucky, Missouri, Georgia, Idaho, and now Alaska. His hope and prayer is to encourage and guide people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ and experience faith every day. Ken is the author of Life Sucks Seek God - a book dealing with the issues of grief, suffering and pain and 5 spiritual practices to face difficulties. Well, you gotta finish strong too. And because that does impact you. And that's like probably one of the few pain points, when I think about my dad - like, man, he was such a rockstar. I wish he would have finished a little stronger in terms of his, just his modeling of lifestyle." 14:33 - Peter's take on cheering on his athletic son - "There's being proud of your kid, and then there's being like letting your own identity creep into it.....So, you know, keeping your priorities in check, and making sure that's not the only focus of life. You know, life's a whole lot more, especially than something like that." 16:12 - Prepare Enrich [https://www.prepare-enrich.com/] - marriage and premarital assessments for couples. 17:00 - Gloo [https://www.gloo.us/] - assessments and developing tools to serve churches 19:34 - On encouraging strengths in our kids: "...Starting to pay attention to what is it that they naturally do and that they love, and realizing there's some motivation there that is going to serve them throughout their life. And how do we unleash that - fan those flames. And what's fun is it's going to be different than you, you know, they're their own unique person." 19:52 - True Motivate tool [https://trumotivate.com/] 23:02 - "You can't make them do anything they don't want to do. And now on the flip side.... actually you do have influence though. And influence is wonderful because it's like a continuum. And so your question, your challenge as a dad, as a parent, is to think about how can I maximize my influence while knowing I don't have control." 24:22 - How do you influence your kids? 5 ways... 25:21 - (1) Light up when your kid walks in the room. 27:30 - "[My kids are] copying the things I do, even when they don't make sense, you know, when they're irrational." 29:57 - Why to make date nights a priority and what that models for our kids. 31:21 - (2) Setting up routines as a family 32:18 - (3) Making church a priority 33:55 - (4) The importance of outsourcing influence to other positive influences and letting go of control. 36:47 - (5) Don't get on the roller coaster of emotion with our kids 39:54 - "Great parents are often very willing to share a little bit of gold. And so don't hesitate to look for those moments where you can glean a little of that and mine some gold, because those things have informed our last 20 years of parenting and has been awesome." Whew! Couples, money, and conflict. It is almost as if these things are synonymous with each other. In this episode, Tiffany sits down with counselor Rhonda Johnson to discuss how to manage conflict when talking about vulnerable topics such as money. This episode not only applies to couples but singles as well. Be prepared for your next money discussion. Tune in! About Our Guest Rhonda Johnson is the owner and founder of Limitless Empowerment based in Central North Carolina. She is a Life Coach, Prepare/Enrich facilitator, and an Interpersonal Strategy Consultant, specializing in helping couples build strong relationships. Her passion and Limitless Empowerment’s primary function is to empower marriages and relationships that are suffering because of a lack of familiarity with communication and lackluster communication skills. Engaged and married couples are given lessons and guidance that build a strong foundation for a strong relationship. She is a counseling intern and along with couples, her primary function is to work with peri- and post-natal mothers who experience depression and anxiety for various reasons. In early July 2020, she was chosen to be part of a focus group conversation for NC Maternal Mental Health Matters, which is offered through the University of North Carolina System and provides support to primary care physicians in screening, assessing, and treating mental health concern with this population. Her why for working with couples is simple. To help build STRONG families that value healthy communication as a foundation to build something real and tangible for our children. These strong families are not in a perpetual statistic of unemployment, poverty, police brutality, or any other malady that can affect the human condition. Proper, heartfelt communication strengthens couples, strong couples strengthen families, strong families strengthen communities and strong communities change the world Additionally, when she was going through marital trouble (and her eventual divorce), she was very troubled by the fact that when she sought help for her marital troubles, there was no hope imparted and the process seemed cold. Hope is all we have when we begin a process and it’s important that you understand that I believe in you and your significant other. In addition, as a couple, we weren’t talking and no one addressed the fact that communication had completely broken down but that does not mean that the marriage is dead. It just means that the communication part of the relationship needs more attention and care, but it can be corrected. Liz Higgins, LMFT is back! And this time we're talking about the common fears couples face during their engagement season. Why fears bubble up, how to face them, and why they're actually a good thing because they can help us grow. * In This Episode: Tackle your fear like Dory the fish: "Go Through It, Not Over It " (Finding Nemo) Doing the Work on your relationship helps couples build on their strengths. Just like someone sees a personal trainer or a business coach because they're trying to get to the next level; couples who lean in to these conversations while they're engaged see the rewards in married life. The most common fears couples have during this season. How they're perfectly normal and what they're trying to tell us. How our dating culture is changing within the millennial generation and how it's shaping our values. Why we should NEVER say "Happy Wife, Happy Life" -- and other outdated views. Why Liz says "we repeat what we don't repair." Summary Brian Mayer discusses the pressure we put on ourselves believing that a new stepfamily will blend quickly or that there is some secret sauce we must learn to make it happen. In this episode he discusses 4 Myths about stepfamilies that if we will stop believing, can help us feel less stressed and less responsible for difficulties in this new system. We hope you enjoy today's message. We hope you enjoy today's message. For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies Entering into a new stepfamily or blended family is hard stuff. There is no way around how difficult it can sometimes be to see that everyone is on the same page and functioning in a healthy way. Research says that it takes 5-7 years for blended or step families to function like a biological or nuclear family. In some instances, the new family will never full develop into something that looks exactly like the biological family. Today we will talk about 4 Common Myths that many of us believe about stepfamilies. These myths are discuss in the Prepare Enrich program for couples. I use this program in my couples counseling and coaching to help couples work through all sorts of practical areas of concern in their relationship. These myths are found in the Prepare Enrich workbook and I will attach a link in the Resource section of these show notes. Myth #1 – We love each other as spouses and so this love will flow down throughout the children. Do not be surprised if this bond and love takes time and as I keep mentioning it may never happen. This is not your fault. It is the situation and the different life that the children have been placed. Myth #2 – This marriage will be better. The goal should always be that you will do better this time around. You will have learned from your mistakes of the past and you will know what to do and what not to do. The problem is that as humans it can be hard to break out of the patterns from the past. The best thing you can do is recognize them and then slowly begin to work them out of your life. Myth #3 – The children will feel happy just like we do. Again the hope is that they do and a small percentage will actually be happy. However most children feel disoriented and sometimes downright resentful of this new situation. It will simply take time for children to become accustomed to the new normal and settle into new routines and patterns. Myth #4 – The stepparent and stepchildren will quickly bond just as a biological parent and child would. As a stepparent there is certainly anxiety about doing all you can to increase the bond. Additionally stepparents sometimes will completely begin acting like a biological parent by immediately giving the child expectations and disciplining. This is a mistake to do this too quickly. A trusting relationship should be developed first. Only thing can you begin to enforce rules. One important thing to do those is have unity with your spouse on these matters. The worst thing to do is hang each other out to dry by showing the kids you have different perspectives on expectations. Take it slow and reduce your internal expectations of what you will see unfold. This will help reduce your stress and anxiety to make this work. Just relax and try to have as much fun in the present moments which are moments you cannot get back. Stop feeling guilty and shamed over the past and worrisome and anxious and live the satisfaction of this present which is all we really have. You can do this, I know you can. Patience and Perserverance in everything you do by creating stability, consistency and structure. Resources Prepare Enrich Workbook for Couples: This workbook is loaded with lots of great exercises for you to do with your spouse to increase your bond and live the kind of marriage you want. Empowered Relationship Podcast: Your Relationship Resource And Guide
For years, I have been talking with clients about the important balance between assertiveness and consideration. Many times, people are too afraid to assert themselves because they have fear of seeming mean, domineering, or controlling. Yet, if you do not assert yourself at all, it is likely you will feel unhappy with your partner and within your relationship. BALANCED ASSERTIVENESS When coaching clients I will sometimes put assertiveness on a high-to-low scale. On one end, you have someone who is high in assertiveness and low in consideration for others. They may neglect to think about others and they may appear to be self-involved and self-centered. On the other end of the scale, you have someone who is low in assertiveness and high in consideration. They may be so considerate of others’ needs that they do not advocate for themselves because they feel it is inappropriate to assert their needs. Or they may be so focused on others that they don’t even know what they want. Both ends of the scale are out of balance. The goal is to be both assertive and considerate in relationship. (These are my Empowered Relationship podcast notes. Be sure to listen to the episode to hear stories, examples, and more tips.) One of the tools that I sometimes use with couples is an assessment titled Prepare – Enrich. The test results help identify a couple’s strengths and weaknesses so that the couple can work to improve and strengthen their relationship. The assessment is called Prepare – Enrich because it helps engaged couples prepare for marriage and helps married couples enrich their relationship. Here are some interesting research findings from Prepare – Enrich: KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS Prepare – Enrich identifies four key relationship dynamics that affect the success of a couple: Assertiveness – the ability to express one’s feelings and ask for what one wants. Self-Confidence – how good one feels about oneself and their ability to accomplish what they want in life. Avoidance – the tendency to minimize issues and reluctance to deal with issues directly. Partner Dominance – how much one feels controlled or dominated by their partner. A Positive Cycle Shows: Being assertive builds self-confidence. Being self-confident builds assertiveness. A Negative Cycle Shows: Avoidance increases the feeling or experience of partner dominance. Feeling as though your partner is dominating and controling increases avoidance. Those That Score High In Assertiveness: Score higher in self-confidence Tend to like the personality of their partner Feel good about their communication and conflict resolution skills Score lower in avoidance and partner dominance Those That Score High In Avoidance: Score higher in partner dominance Tend to dislike the personality of their partner Are less satisfied with their communication and conflict resolution skills Score lower in self confidence and assertiveness If you struggle with being assertive in relationship, then chances are you may struggle with self-confidence too. I encourage you to take one step towards practicing being assertive. This step could be something small like voicing your preference for dinner. Or you may want to spend some time thinking about what you would say if you were to advocate for your needs in relationship on bigger topics. I understand this is easier said than done, especially if you have had very little support or encouragement to articulate your needs. If you would like to support in becoming more assertive in relationship, please contact me. I would be happy to help.
