About Ethan Hartzell Back in 2012 I was at a cross-road in my career as a seasoned retail manager who was looking for a new chapter in my professional career when I sat down with a new found friend in the mortgage industry whom suggested that I look into the Property and Casualty Industry. Without hesitation or a job offer on the table, I enrolled in my P&C Pre-Licensing course with the pursuit to become a licensed agent. Shortly after passing my exam and being appointed by a local captive agency, I went into a 3 week long corporate training program where I embarked on my new journey as an insurance sales professional. While in my last week of training we went live on the phones to begin prospecting and quoting individuals for their insurance needs. Within just a few short days I had sold three prospective households and got my first taste of success, I was hooked! Low and behold I was told that I was the very first agent to ever sell a policy while in the corporate training program, they said it had never been done before at my local level. Even one of my sales trainers told me, "you're going to be an agency owner one day." This week, Weird Religion presents: an “episode swap” with a pod we think you'll love called “Saved by the City.” We're playing two of their episodes on our feed this month, and they're playing two of ours. They are kindred spirits. And they have a superstar guest in this episode. It's all too much. Support us by giving them a listen. [[PRAYER HANDS]]Grab your leopard print blazer, roll down your windows and get ready to be all up in your feels. It's been 30 years since Amy Grant released Heart in Motion – the chart-topping album that marked the musician's crossover from contemporary Christian artist to mainstream pop icon. Katelyn and Roxy catch up with the artist at her Nashville farm and talk to their childhood icon about living life in the public eye — through all its ups and downs. The hosts also reflect on the expectations put on women — especially Christian women — who have achieved fame. And how the pressure to live their lives on display places even our most beloved women stars at the mercy of the mob.GUEST: Amy Grant is a singer songwriter and so much more. She is celebrating the 30 year anniversary of her album “Heart in Motion,” which was certified platinum 5 times, making it the best selling Christian album of all time. It spent weeks on the Billboard top 10, as did a number of its songs. Including the classic “Baby Baby” which reached no 1 on Billboard.Several songs from Amy Grant's Heart in Motion are featured on the episode.

Ep. 25: Susanna Hoffs: This Bird Has Flown

Page One Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 13, 2023 47:21

Page One, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.About the guest author:Boasting one of pop's most beloved voices, Susanna Hoffs grew up in L.A. with an ever-present soundtrack of '60s music. She loved to sing and play guitar, going on to study the arts in college. Stirred by punk and new wave, Susanna started her first band with David Roback while at UC, Berkeley. Upon returning to L.A., she placed a want ad which led her to Vicki and Debbi Peterson. In December 1980, they met in the garage of Susanna's parents' home and a band was born. Blending '60s garage rock, lush harmonies, and jangly guitars, the Bangles became a seminal band of the '80s with a string of hits from three platinum-selling albums. Over the decades since, the Bangles continued to tour and release LPs. In 1991, Susanna issued a pop-heavy solo album, When You're a Boy. Five years later, her eponymous LP brought her closer to her musical roots than she'd been in a long time which was met with critical praise. After working together in the Austin Powers films, Susanna and Matthew Sweet formed Sid 'n Susie, releasing three volumes of their acclaimed Under the Covers series. In 2011, she stole away to the studio for Someday, a retro modern solo set that served as a stylish homage to the '60s pop that she grew up on. She followed that up in short order with two EPs. More recently, Susanna has collaborated with the Zombies, Tom Petty, Chris Martin, Mike Campbell, Jack Antonoff, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Aimee Mann, Andrew Bird, Jon Brion, Maya Rudolph, and others. Her debut novel, This Bird Has Flown, is published by Little Brown, a division of the Hachette Book Group. She's a graduate from UC Berkeley with a degree in art and lives in Los Angeles with her husband of three decades and has two sons. You can find her at www.susannahoffs.com and follow her on Instagram @susannahoffs.About the host:Holly Lynn Payne is an award-winning novelist and writing coach, and the former CEO and founder of Booxby, a startup built to help authors succeed. She is an internationally published author of four historical fiction novels. Her debut, The Virgin's Knot, was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers book. She recently finished her first YA crossover novel inspired by her nephew with Down syndrome. She lives in Marin County with her daughter and enjoys mountain biking, surfing and hiking with her dog. To learn more about her books and private writing coaching services, please visit hollylynnpayne.com or find her at Instagram and Twitter @hollylynnpayne.If you have a first page you'd like to submit to the Page One Podcast, please do so here.As an author and writing coach, I know that the first page of any book has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. So I thought to ask your favorite master storytellers how they do their magic to hook YOU. After the first few episodes, it occurred to me that maybe someone listening might be curious how their first page sits with an audience, so I'm opening up Page One to any writer who wants to submit the first page of a book they're currently writing. If your page is chosen, you'll be invited onto the show to read it and get live feedback from one of Page One's master storytellers. Page One exists to inspire, celebrate and promote the work of both well-known and unknown creative talent.  You can listen to Page One on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Pandora, Stitcher and all your favorite podcast players. Hear past episodes. If you're interested in getting writing tips and the latest podcast episode updates with the world's beloved master storytellers, please sign up for my very short monthly newsletter at hollylynnpayne.com and follow me @hollylynnpayne on Instagram, Twitter, Goodreads, and Facebook. Your email address is always private and you can always unsubscribe anytime. The Page One Podcast is created at the foot of a mountain in Marin County, California, and is a labor of love in service to writers and book lovers. My intention is to inspire, educate and celebrate. Thank you for being a part of my creative community! Be well and keep reading.~Holly~

Welcome back to Gaining Mom-entum! This week, Meghan & Abi start the episode off talking about the recent losses of three celebrities who played formative roles in their upbringings - Betty White, Sidney Poitier, and Bob Saget. Then they segue into this week's topic - anger and frustration. They start with some definitions clarifying the differences between anger and frustration before exploring their own relationships with both of those feelings and how they've been exacerbated by the pandemic. They look back at their childhood expressions of anger and frustration and what those expressions look like for them now as parents. They reframe how we look at healthy expressions of anger but are clear that manifesting anger in a hurtful way is never to be condoned. They talk about burnout, their anger and frustration triggers, recognizing escalating emotions, as well as outdated gender roles in expressions of anger and racist stereotypes that affect how Abi expresses anger and parents about anger. They also discuss how they strive to find positive things to do with their anger so that expressing it can become a point of pride. As always, thanks for listening! On the show today… 2021 saw the narratives around female celebrities change like never before. It was the year the Free Britney movement captivated the world and Paris Hilton's legacy and rise to fame was told in a whole new, and much darker, way than ever before. We started asking questions about what really happened to Amanda Bynes and took a closer look at why the world had turned against Lindsay Lohan. But in a year where we obsessed about celebrity ‘bad' girls having redemption arcs, we also became hungry for a different type of story. A story where former Hollywood 'good' girls like Chrissy Teigen and Ellen DeGeneres were held to account and we appeared to revel in their downfalls. In today's episode, we discuss how the stories around famous women have changed in 2021and what happens next. She was born on December 11, 1865 in Dover, Delaware. Her parents were Wilson Cannon and Mary Jump. Her father was a shipbuilder and also a state senator, and her mother is the one who got her interested in astronomy and mathematics. She attended what will later be known as Wesley College in Delaware, and then transferred to Wellesley College in Massachusetts. That's not confusing or anything, is it?   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. The discovery of the first known pulsar was the event that made Bell Burnell famous. She was doing work for her PhD at the Mullard Radio Observatory just outside Cambridge. She chose to study the hot, new field of quasars, quasi-stellar objects, for her doctoral dissertation.   She was working with a radio telescope array that was designed by her advisor, Dr. Hewish. For 2 years she had helped build the grandly named Interplanetary Scintillation Array, or ISA, from 1965 to 1967.   The ISA's a fixed array of thousands of 3.7 meter dipole antennas that can scan the entire northern sky as the Earth spins on its axis each day. The array was used in Tony Hewish's research of scintillating quasars. These pulsar things were not what they were looking for, not even remotely on their radar!   The output of signals from the radio receiver was written on a strip of paper by a paper chart recorder, generating a huge amount of paper each day, as much as 29 meters!   We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. What do you do, when your mother is in a spot of bother? You run to help…of course! That’s the situation the Countryfile and former One Show presenter Matt Baker found himself in last summer, when his mum Janice had a serious accident with some sheep, and was unable to continue with the day to day running of the family farm in the Durham Hills. Their story is documented in a four part series currently on More4 called Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales. Emma speaks to Janice and Matt. It's been announced that thousands of new, expectant or bereaved mothers will receive help and support for mental health problems through dozens of new dedicated hubs which are being set up across England. The hubs will bring together maternity services, reproductive health and psychological therapy under one roof as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. Around 6,000 women will receive care and treatment for a wide range of mental health issues from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after giving birth to others with a severe fear of childbirth. Emma gets reactions to the news from Sarah Hughes, Chief Executive of campaigning charity Centre for Mental Health and Dr Alain Gregoire, President of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. Another statue of a strong woman has made the headlines. Last year it was Mary Wollstonecraft. Now it's Greta Thunberg. A statue of the 18 year old environmentalist was unveiled in Winchester last week but some think it's a waste of money. Emma is joined by Christine Charlesworth, the statue's creator, who's not only made Greta during lockdown but two other British feminist icons as well. Susan Spindler's first novel Surrogate tells the story of Ruth who, at the age of 54, volunteers to carry a baby for her daughter, who has just had her seventh miscarriage. But how selfless is Ruth's kind offer? She has done all of the research, taken the hormones, done the tests, thought of everything. What she doesn't know is how being her daughter's surrogate will make her feel and the upheaval it will cause in all of her relationships. Susan tells Emma how she researched the story.
