In this episode I talk to Iain Innes about his season racing skimo in the ISMF World Cup series, before going on to chat about longer team races and our season finale in the iconic Trofeo Mezzalama race in the Monte Rosa region of the Pennine Alps.Iain raced for Team GB as a downhill skier for over ten years, before switching to more mountaineering-centred activities. This season he has lived out of his van in the alps, training full time as a skimo athlete. Whether racing the furiously-paced skimo sprint, putting in big elevation days to Chamonix summits or cross training on foot or by paraglider, he has had a long and busy season. Trofeo Mezzalama is an Italian high altitude ski mountaineering team race in which pairs traverse from Breuil-Cervinia to Gressoney-la-Trinite, crossing the Monte Rosa massif and reaching altitudes of over 4200m. Named after Italian military ski mountaineer Ottorino Mezzalama, the race was started in 1933 and is one of the oldest and best known skimo races in the world.Due to the altitude and terrain involved, it is difficult to get perfect conditions on race day. Thus we were delighted to be met with exactly that: even atop the 4225m Castor there was no wind, perfect visibility and sun, with good snow and well established tracks. The race involves around 3200m of ascent over 40km and pairs must be roped together for the glacial section of the race.We talk through the preparation for this race, as well as race day itself, where an excited 320 teams set off at 5.30am on foot through the dark but crowd -lined streets of Cervinia.Iain is supported by Black Diamond, Augment and Tillicoultry Quarries.See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smp6_jYcbAY for a video of MezzalamaIf you want to buy me a cuppa to help support the podcast, thank you and please do at: https://ko-fi.com/finlaywild

Exploring Lombardia, Piemonte, and Valdosta In this captivating episode of Kimberly's Italy, hosts Kimberly Holcombe and Tommaso invite listeners on a journey through the enchanting regions of Lombardia, Piemonte, and Val d'Aosta. Their mission is to spotlight the unique characteristics of Italy's 20 regions, with a particular focus on promoting lesser-known travel destinations. Lombardia: Diversity and Cultural Richness Kimberly and Tommaso begin by exploring Lombardia, a region renowned for its varied landscapes and significant economic contributions. Milan, the cultural and economic hub, takes center stage as Kimberly shares her personal experiences from living in this vibrant city. She candidly discusses the allure of Milan alongside the challenges posed by increased tourism. The hosts also highlight other noteworthy cities in Lombardy, such as Brescia, celebrated for its rich art and food culture, and Bergamo, known for its well-preserved medieval center. Their reminiscences of trips around the picturesque Lake Como and Lake Lugano, including an unforgettable encounter with Ferraris, add a personal touch to the episode. Piemonte: A Land of Culinary Delights and Natural Beauty The journey continues to Piemonte, a region distinguished by its geographical diversity. Kimberly and Tommaso delve into the world of Barolo wine and truffles, key highlights of Piemonte's culinary scene. They discuss the vibrant city of Torino and the lesser-known gem of Vercelli, famous for its expansive rice fields that attract cyclists and offer exciting river sports. This segment is a treat for food and wine enthusiasts as well as nature lovers. Val d'Aosta: Italy's Smallest Region with Grand Scenery Finally, the hosts turn their attention to Val d'Aosta, Italy's smallest region, celebrated for its pristine air and natural beauty—a stark contrast to the urban hustle of Milan. Kimberly and Tomasso share exhilarating skiing experiences at the Matterhorn and Cervinia, and explore the region's impressive wine production and breathtaking scenery, especially around Courmayeur. This segment promises to inspire outdoor adventurers and those seeking tranquility. Follow us on Social Media Instagram Facebook Looking Ahead Stay tuned as Kimberly and Tommaso continue their biweekly journey through Italy's regions, providing invaluable insights and travel tips. My guest today worked for Club Med from 2009 to 2021. She was born in Italy, has an English Literature degree from SMU, and is currently pursuing her MBA at Bellevue University. Her first season was in Club Med Sandpiper as a Reception and Planning G.O. She held other positions such as Reception Manager and Room Division Manager. I hope you are ready for some funny and interesting stories because this guest has them! From Italy, but now living in Dallas Texas, please help me welcome, Giulia Fitzgerald! Giulia worked in the Club Med resorts of Sandpiper, Turks & Caicos, Cherating, Cervinia, and Napitia in Italy, to name a few. Giulia has a ton of interesting stories to share with us. Stories like scuba diving with Tiger sharks at Club Med Columbus Isle, a rather amusing “monkey” story from Cherating, and a wild Matterhorn ski story when she was in Cervinia, that you have to hear to believe! We engaged in some rapid-fire questions with Giulia as well as go over if she misses anything about Club Med and who she enjoyed working with. Please enjoy this episode with a very entertaining person! **My First Season podcast has always been ad-free and free to listen to and is available to download on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Podchaser, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes.

Negli ultimi tempi, all'estremo confine nord-occidentale c'è una questione spinosa.

“Sex Offender”.

Stanley Larsen was one of the original Hot Doggers. Known for his loose contest runs that earned him titles like Canadian National Champion, French Freestyle Champion, Swiss Aerial Champion, and European Champion, Stanley was so much more than a contest guy. Fifty years before the Nimbus Crew existed, Stanley Larsen was looked at as the first skier to look at the mountain like a blank canvas and make art with his skiing. And when his skiing was done, Stanley made art in Hollywood, directing Super Bowl commercials and more. On the podcast, we talk about his counterculture roots, Dick Barrymore, Warren Miller, The Marlboro Tour, the death of hotdog skiing, and more. These history lessons are important and not to be missed. Stanley Larsen Show Notes: 5:00: Saving lives, unbelievable Stanley skills, growing up in Seattle in the bike business. 10 :00: Getting into skiing through a church he never went inside, racing, counterculture Stanley, and he was going to be a pro skier 19:00: Best Day Brewing: All of the flavor of your favorite IPA or Kolsch, without the alcohol, the calories, and sugar. ¡Hola amigos! Ski tourism in Europe has been facing severe challenges in recent years, the most pressing one being climate change and its diverse consequences. Some ski resorts with its local businesses are dependent on constant ski tourism while others have started engaging in a path towards more diversified and sustainable tourism. We talked to Christian Zwanziger, the spokesperson for tourism of the Bavarian Green Party, and Irene Berthod, the president of the merchants, bars and restaurants association in the popular ski resort Cervinia, Italy. Find out what this entails and how ski tourism can answer fundamental questions about its future, in the light of an ongoing climate, biodiversity and energy crisis. This episode was hosted by Hannah Kleine and Silvie Carrel. Edited and sound engineered by Hannah Kleine. Music by John Sib and Winking Fox Music.

Katie and Germain both have top-10 finishes at UTMB and have won races like the UTCAM, MIUT and the Swissalpine Marathon. Together, the pair traversed from Cervinia to Chamonix in 3 days along the summer Haute Route. The project, which they completed in 2020, was documented by On Running in a production called “Taming Giants”. Among other skimo races, the two have raced the Pierra Menta, and this winter Katie raced 2 Skimo World Cups for the USA. We talk about navigating a career as a professional athlete when your partner is doing the same, training in the mountains throughout the seasons, the ties between skimo and ultra-running and much more.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

They discuss their varied training, their careers to date, and their epic 2020 adventure that combined running and climbing to cover 190 kilometres from Cervinia to Chamonix, including summits of monster mountains the Breithorn and Mont Blanc. Cue a conversation packed full of insights into the day-to-day lives of a couple of professional ultra trail runners, as well as their involvement in the development of ON Running's new Cloud Ultra shoe...Less pressingly, Will's fond memories of American breakfasts are smashed like old china plates falling out of a poorly taped cardboard box, and Chris recounts a recent run where he was ridiculed by some children. It's the day after the Matterhorn Ultraks and just four days after Kilian Jornet's successful attempt on the Matterhorn Summit record attempt from Cervinia. It has been quite a few days for this iconic mountain and although Kilian has excelled on both occasions, we all know, the mountain is still the boss. Kilian arrives with Emelie Forsberg looking relaxed and fresh after a late breakfast. I congratulate him (and Emelie) once again on topping the podium at the Skyrunning Matterhorn Ultraks race and ask him how he feels, ‘I am a little tired but feel good. I was certainly tired in the race but I didn't push too hard. I just did what I needed to do to win the race'. Our conversation turns the TNF UTMB and we discuss how the race will unfold for the men and women. Kilian and Emelie are animated at the prospect of Julien Chorier, Miguel Heras, Anton Krupicka and the other contenders going head-to-head. Emelie gets excited at the thought of Nuria Picas in the ladies race, it's her first 100-mile race and of course Emelie knows the Catalan well. We could talk all day but eventually I settle down with Kilian in a quiet corner and we discuss the Matterhorn. First recorded in September 2013. Welcome to episode 11 from the very snowy Swiss Alps. You might have heard that there has been some very serious snowfall already in the southern alps with resorts like Saas Fee, Cervinia and Zermatt getting absolutely hosed in the last week. It's snowy here also in the Western end of the alps and the temperatures are cold. Hopefully this means a good and early start to the season. This week I have a short interview with Jon Ballou, the Boss of The Aspen Ski School. That's the title I hear in my head anyway but actually, his full title is Managing Director, Ski and Snowboard Schools, Aspen Skiing Company. You can find out more about what that all means when you listen to the episode. We talk about managing such a large operation, teaching trends and a bit of tech. No podcast with Jon would be complete without a bit of chat about the movie Aspen Extreme too. You can find Jon on facebook as Jonathan Ballou or on his youtube channel of the same name. https://www.facebook.com/jonathan.ballou.7 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Ko-b6WfmZWWxyi6rj14hg I hope you enjoy the episode, see you on the next one.
