This episode, we interview student Natasha Waldorf—she's a senior majoring in physics and applied computer science at Whittier College, a small liberal arts college near Los Angeles. Due to the challenges of COVID lockdowns during her late high school and early college years, Natasha found online education made applying to internships and gaining research experience difficult; but Natasha made the best of her circumstances by working at a county park nature center in southeastern Pennsylvania learning about hiking trail maintenance and reptile husbandry. Though this may not seem relevant at first to Physics or computer science, the experience helped her to discover a love for the outdoors while developing her work ethic. Since then, she has gone on to intern at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Small Satellite Portfolio in Albuquerque, NM as well as Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Orlando, FL where she created tools for modeling sensor coverage and performance. Natasha reminds us that pursuing interests that may not always be specific “resume builders” can actually help set you apart in unexpected ways --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shawna-christenson2/support

These are preventive as well as retarding. In this week's talk, Amit and Rinat talk about Fire Control System, the different types, why we should use them, and a lot more!

He was a loved husband, father, son, and friend. He grew up in southeastern Connecticut, living in Pawcatuck, Mystic and New London. James learned to swim by falling in the Pawcatuck River as a youngster. In some ways, James's life began in earnest after he contracted rheumatic fever, spent a year in bed, and relearned to walk in his early teens. Shortly after recovery, he dropped out of eighth grade and joined the U.S. Navy at the ripe old age of 17 in 1942, to fight in World War II. He started his Navy career as a gunner's mate and finished as a Chief Petty Officer and a Fire Control school instructor. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after cruises to the Arctic, the Antarctic, the tropics, and places in between, all above Davy Jones' Locker. Jim married Agnes Irene Scott in 1948 and started a family with her in between stints of sea duty. They eventually settled in Pawcatuck 1962. Through it all, he learned the power of an education. Though Jim was often away from his young family at sea, working at the base movie theater, and going to night school at Mitchell College, he dearly loved his family. Later, Jim became the Apprentice School Supervisor at Electric Boat and earned an associate degree in Business Administration in 1968 from Mitchell College. After Electric Boat he became the New England Training Coordinator for the National Machine Tool Builders Association and finished his formal career as the Director of the Department of Labor for Rhode Island. Jim loved scuba diving, fishing, clamming, lobstering, baking, running marathons and of course doing 750 sit-ups whenever he felt like it. In his later years, he also tended a large raspberry patch, dabbled with grapevines, and loved sharing his homemade jelly and sourdough bread. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and everyone who knew him. He was a loved husband, father, son, and friend. He grew up in southeastern Connecticut, living in Pawcatuck, Mystic and New London. He learned to swim by falling in the Pawcatuck River as a youngster. The ever health-conscious and scuba-diving Dad wryly wondered if he should have smoked a few cigarettes along the way as he struggled with walking during the last years of his life. He spent his war years in the Pacific at a forward Navy supply depot on Majuro in the Marshall Islands. He started his Navy career as a gunner's mate and finished as a Chief Petty Officer and a Fire Control school instructor. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after cruises to the Arctic, the Antarctic, the tropics, and places in between, all above Davy Jones' Locker. He served on the Grand Canyon, the Edisto, the McGowan, the Proteus, the Hank, the Moale and others. While on shore leave, Jim loved to roller skate. Jim married Agnes Irene Scott in 1948 and started a family with her in between stints of sea duty. During his Navy years, his family called trailer parks in Virginia and Rhode Island and Army housing in Maryland home before settling in Pawcatuck in May of 1962. Through it all, he learned the power of an education. Though Jim was often away from his young family at sea, working at the base movie theater, and going to night school at Mitchell College, he dearly loved his family. Jim started his post Navy career as the Apprentice School Supervisor at Electric Boat and earned an associate degree in Business Administration in 1968 from Mitchell College. After Electric Boat he became the New England Training Coordinator for the National Machine Tool Builders Association and finished his formal career as the Director of the Department of Labor for Rhode Island. After retiring to build docks, drive cabs, and after taking culinary classes at Ella Grasso Technical School and learning to cook like his mom, he worked in area restaurants such as the Shelter Harbor and Go Fish. No matter what, he often longed for the blue waters off Majuro and sadly enough, travel agents would not sell him a ticket when he tried to return in his eighties. Jim will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Thank you for taking the time today to remember and celebrate Jim's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Listen to Derek talk about his ups and downs during his service to the Navy. Derek did not have an easy ride with the Navy by any means. He opens up to me about his struggles with becoming a Father and losing his grandfather on the same day, then waiting to be assigned to his first ship with much excitement just to find out he possibly got assigned to one of the worst ships in the fleet. Derek opens my eyes about what it was like to be on ship during a deployment and all the stress he went through during that time in his life. Unfortunately the ship Derek was assigned to had a active shooter and he lost one of his shipmates. Derek is a success story, he hit his all time low while on ship deployed away from his family on one of the worst ships to be on at that time as he took his first attempt at ending his life. I am very grateful he did not achieve his goal at that time and was able to turn his life around and become a great providing father to his two kids and became an engineer to one of the best companies to work for. ~10~ Fire Control by Christopher White Verspeak Deadzone is the kind of game that invites stories. It’s tight focus on one small corner of the Warpath universe and skirmish level of gaming means that it invites narrative about the various factions and their heroes. What we have here are ten examples of those stories, chronicling the adventures of various factions from the no-nonsense Enforcers to the piratical Marauders, with idealistic Rebs and wise Asterians thrown in for good measure. Heck, we even managed to get the Plague in there for all you players who just can’t get enough gribbly. As the game inspires stories, you will find that these stories inspire your games. The cinematic nature of the game itself means that you can’t help but visualise each one as a scenario played out across a tabletop. That’s what the best games are about after all. Starring; Jack Fyke, Rob Harper, Andrew Jashyn, and Andrew "Coach" Jashyn ~~ And don't forget to email us feedback at VinnlandOldTimeRadio@Gmail.com ! ~~
