The Russian No 1 also said she wanted "war to end", a significant statement both for its anti-war sentiment and even for defining the invasion of Ukraine as a war, something the Russian regime continues to call a "special military operation". 14:53 - Lleyton Hewitt is inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport, giving an emotional speech in which he said he never expected to be a HoFer, that is was something for his idols. How did the Australian make it so far? And what about that Wimbledon win in 2002? 23:55 - Maxime Cressy wins the title at Newport, serve-and-volleying his way to victory over Alexander Bublik. What is his ceiling? He will now probably be seeded at the US Open, which could make him a tricky early-round opponent for someone. And Calvin's got another theory about the return of S&V in modern tennis... 38:45 - Serena Williams reveals her plans for the summer will take her to Toronto and Washington before New York. How much work does she need to put in to be competitive at the US Open? 45:18 - Inside the secret world of tennis umpires, a Guardian long read. SEN Host of 'The First Serve', Brett Phillips joined us this morning to discuss Lleyton Hewitt's induction into the Tennis Hall of Fame, and Jason Kubler's vein of form after Wimbledon.
A special version of the podcast coming from the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island and featuring...LLEYTON HEWITT ON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE INTERNATIONAL TENNIS HALL OF FAME - ‘As a kid in Australia I'd wake up in the middle of the night to dream of playing on the courts that these guys would play on and now to be actually sitting alongside them in the Hall of Fame of our famous sport is pretty amazing and it's something that I don't think will sink in right at the moment, but certainly looking ahead and being called a Hall of Famer alongside those greats is something I'm very proud of'.ANDY RODDICK ON LLEYTON HEWITT - ‘He's probably the toughest competitor that I played against. That aside, when you define him just as a guy who hustled and made a lot of balls and was kind of intense about it all, actually does a disservice to what he did well. He was a master of trajectory, meaning he knew you couldn't hurt him crosscourt because he was so fast, so you needed to go line, but he became such an expert of keeping that ball low, most of the time it was below your hips, so you're having to attack to small parts of the court because he was able to shrink it with his speed, but also from places that were uncomfortable'.TODD MARTIN ON THE HALL OF FAME'S ENTRY CRITERIA - ‘As the sport evolves I think we have to consider uniqueness and many more data points than just were you best in those two weeks and were you best among the competition you had. Sometimes the competition might be different because Nadal's not the same player every year, so there's some year's where, if you're ahead of Nadal, that's more impressive than others'. ANDY MURRAY ON EXTENDING THE GRASS COURT SEASON - 'Obviously I like playing grass court tennis and I think the build-up to the grass season is too short. You know I think there should be a Masters Series on the grass ahead of Wimbledon, it'd be fair and my feeling is that the biggest tournaments should have a proper build up to them and I definitely think there should be a Masters Series at least on grass, so if that's only one week, so be it, but I think it should be there'. ALEXANDER BUBLIK ON LEARNING TO ENJOY TENNIS - ‘It's becoming less about the money and more about enjoying the game and I really honestly say I play now for the matches and the results. It's been like that now for a couple of months, so I'm happy with how I approach the game and how I'm enjoying it much more than in the past and it's nothing to do with the results, because the results have been horrible'. JASON KUBLER ON COMING THROUGH INJURY - ‘For me I feel when you do have a situation thrown at you that's not great, you can either hold onto it and feel sour about it, or try to move on and try not to have that sour feeling and hold onto it. Right now I'm trying to improve my mental side, improve my tennis, improve my fitness levels and try to get more comfortable at these bigger tournaments'.-Podcast & Interviews by Chris Bowers

If I had to list all of the items our guest tonight has accomplished in the tennis and sports industry, it would take up the entire episode. But to just name a few, this guest was the first sports agent in professional tennis representing players such as Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl; he was the founder of ProServ, one of the first sports marketing firms established in 1970; he co-founded the ATP in 1972 with Jack Kramer and Cliff Drysdale; he's an author, a former Davis Cup player and Davis Cup captain, and was the co-founder of the Legg-Mason tournament held in Washington DC; and like my co-host, this guest was elected to the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009, please welcome to the pod, Donald Dell. He was a loved husband, father, son, and friend. He grew up in southeastern Connecticut, living in Pawcatuck, Mystic and New London. He learned to swim by falling in the Pawcatuck River as a youngster. The ever health-conscious and scuba-diving Dad wryly wondered if he should have smoked a few cigarettes along the way as he struggled with walking during the last years of his life. In some ways, James's life began in earnest after he contracted rheumatic fever, spent a year in bed, and relearned to walk in his early teens. Shortly after recovery, he dropped out of eighth grade and joined the U.S. Navy at the ripe old age of 17 in 1942, to fight in World War II. He spent his war years in the Pacific at a forward Navy supply depot on Majuro in the Marshall Islands. He started his Navy career as a gunner's mate and finished as a Chief Petty Officer and a Fire Control school instructor. He retired from the Navy in 1962 after cruises to the Arctic, the Antarctic, the tropics, and places in between, all above Davy Jones' Locker. He served on the Grand Canyon, the Edisto, the McGowan, the Proteus, the Hank, the Moale and others. While on shore leave, Jim loved to roller skate. Jim married Agnes Irene Scott in 1948 and started a family with her in between stints of sea duty. During his Navy years, his family called trailer parks in Virginia and Rhode Island and Army housing in Maryland home before settling in Pawcatuck in May of 1962. Through it all, he learned the power of an education. Though Jim was often away from his young family at sea, working at the base movie theater, and going to night school at Mitchell College, he dearly loved his family. Jim started his post Navy career as the Apprentice School Supervisor at Electric Boat and earned an associate degree in Business Administration in 1968 from Mitchell College. After Electric Boat he became the New England Training Coordinator for the National Machine Tool Builders Association and finished his formal career as the Director of the Department of Labor for Rhode Island. After retiring to build docks, drive cabs, and after taking culinary classes at Ella Grasso Technical School and learning to cook like his mom, he worked in area restaurants such as the Shelter Harbor and Go Fish. Jim loved scuba diving, fishing, clamming, lobstering, baking, running marathons and of course doing 750 sit-ups whenever he felt like it. In his later years, he also tended a large raspberry patch, dabbled with grapevines, and loved sharing his homemade jelly and sourdough bread. No matter what, he often longed for the blue waters off Majuro and sadly enough, travel agents would not sell him a ticket when he tried to return in his eighties. Jim will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Thank you for taking the time today to remember and celebrate Jim's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, NCAA and Tennis Hall of Fame athlete Roger Crawford talks with Host Tom Loarie about his remarkable journey in tennis and the wisdom he gained -- and now shares with others daily -- from achieving what most people thought was impossible. Born without hands, and only two fingers at the end of his left arm and one on his right, with three toes on his right foot and losing his left leg at age five, NO ONE imagined Roger Crawford would become the only person in U.S. history to become a U.S. Professional Tennis Association athlete, compete in a Division 1 College Sport with a disability, become a certified tennis professional, win the prestigious International Tennis Association's prestigious achievement award and earn awards in tennis at the very highest level, including NCAA Division Hall of Fame and Hall of Fame for People with Disabilities, the last distinction which he shares with fellow honorees such as Christopher Reeves, Helen Keller and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Now he dedicates his career to helping others -- you and me -- achieve success. Find Show Notes here. Listen below.
