It was a different time but not THAT different when Richard Elfman decided to bring the wild things he saw on stage with his equally terrifying brother, Danny Elfman's band, The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo and marry their showmanship with the racist cartoons of the past to create the Forbidden Zone! The story of the family Hercules (Ugh-Fudge Banana, Phil Gordon, Hyman Diamond and Virginia Rose, the only one with a SAG card) and their daughter Frenchie (Marie-Pascale Elfman) who live in a house that happens to have a doorway into the 6th dimension. When neighborhood friend, Squeez-It's sister, Renee (Matthew Bright) disappears into the portal, Frenchie decides to check it out for herself. She goes down down down and meets Queen Doris (Susan Tyrell) and her King Fausto who lock her up for different reasons, the King wants a sex slave and the Queen wants to torture her with the help of daughter, The Princess (Gisele Lindley). When her family comes looking for her, they find a world beyond comprehension where you always expect to see a skid mark and the boys are always humpin' - Forbidden Zone, this week on Doom Generation. SHRUNKEN HEADS tells the classic tale of three murdered children who are decapitated, resurrected by voodoo, and become crime fighters who turn criminals into farting zombies. You know, that tired old trope. Richard Elfman's gonzo dark comedy is one of the wildest discoveries we've had on this show so far; luckily we've got an amazing special guest on hand to help us make sense of it. Grady Hendrix, the New York Times bestselling author of HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE, MY BEST FRIEND'S EXORCISM, THE SOUTHERN BOOK CLUB'S GUIDE TO SLAYING VAMPIRES, and many more, joins us to talk about all the switchblade-wielding, gender-bending, absolutely bizarre shenanigans for an episode you don't want to miss. This is our 40th episode of Spill your guts and the final episode of season 2. We will be taking a few weeks to recharge our batteries and prepare season 3. Also, we'll be catching up with folks and checking out some new movies at the amazing Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal this week and next week so we'll be taking you with us. Thanks to my incredibly hard-working team for a fantastic season and to all of you for sitting down with us. Much more guts to be spilled in season 3 and once again, thank you for joining us. Our guest today is one of the genres great showmen. His films are whacky, funny, boundary pushing, musically charged, sexual, gruesome, occasionally satirical but never mean spirited but most of all, a hell of a lot of fun. There is no one else like him and no other films like his. Today we are joined by the hilarious, thoughtful and wonderful… Richard Elfman. Richard is very much an auteur. His 1980 cult classic “Forbidden Zone” is an upside-down topsy-turvy musical adventure of madness. It is basically impossible to classify. Not really a horror film, nor musical, nor fantasy… it's a Richard Elfman film and that means you're in for a good time. With masterful scores by his brother and frequent collaborator, the legendary Danny Elfman, Richard has a filmography of impossible to classify movies that all carry his distinct signature as filmmaker. Richard's films also have a strong DIY quality that speaks to his determination to get his films made the way he wants to make them. I can only imagine what a pitch meeting with studio execs for “Aliens, clowns & geeks” would be like. Actually, that would be awesome. I'd love to be in that meeting. Richard discusses his approach to filmmaking including the joys of bringing your family and friends onboard, his two personas, finding his tribe as the director of San Francisco transvestite performance group “The Cockettes” and founding the beloved “Mystics Knights of the Oingo Boingo”. As an added bit of awesomeness, Richard has provided us with musical tracks by Danny Elfman, Ego Plum and Radioactive Chicken Heads from his new film “Bloody Bridget”. “Bloody Bridget” is absolutely insane and a total blast. See it with an audience if you can and keep an eye out for a kick ass performance by Richard's wife Anastasia Elfman in the titular role. Let's take a trip into the forbidden so with the maestro of madness, Richard Elfman! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

On our show, "Howling At The Full Moon" for our 23rd episode we're going for a real classic Paramount era flick with the 1994 sci-fi/horror gem "SHRUNKEN HEADS" directed by the incomparable Richard Elfman (director of Forbidden Zone and founding member of Oingo Boingo). Shrunken Heads is a tale of a trio of NYC kids who are killed by thugs and later brought back to life as reanimated shrunken heads to exact their revenge. It's part musical, part horror, a dash of science fiction with a sprinkling of crime thriller brought to us in the wacky way as only Elfman can. Join regular hosts Cameron Scott and Dustin Hubbard as they take a deep dive review on this Full Moon classick. This is the 23rd episode in a series of shows all about Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment Empire where we've got mad scientists, sci-fi epics, and rabid clowns all in one place! When you need a break from reality, let our hosts guide you through the madhouse of bloodthirsty vampires, psychopathic cookies, and maniacal puppets. Don't be a squid and join us in the fun! 'There's nothing more for us in this world now except for revenge.'
Cohost Ruthann Jagge and Staci grill horror author Josh Millican, who has a brand new novel out called Deeper Than Hell. It's set in a Dante's Inferno like underground nightmare, and features rock-related references throughout. Josh is also working on the authorized biography of Richard Elfman, a cult film director and a founding member of The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo. Also, Staci talks to Ruthann about her short horror story in Rock & Roll Nightmares: Do You Fear Like We Do, the 1970s edition. It's called Tiny Danger: Demon Seamstress for the Band, and it's about a '70s fashionista whose hand-sewn leather creations are to die for! Lastly, Staci reads from the “Flirtin' With Disaster” chapter about Mother Love Bone's Andrew Wood in Rock & Roll Nightmares: True Stories, Volume One, which is currently an Amazon bestseller.
On this episode, we talk about Richard Elfman's very 90s mistake MODERN VAMPIRES and also Tobe Hooper's sticky, disgusting rednexploitation flick EATEN ALIVE!

Known as “The Cartoon Composer,” Mexican American Ego Plum is an award-winning composer, musician, and music producer whose distinctive sound and unique self-taught sensibility have made him the musical king of quirky animation. Lending his creative talents to numerous animated series, his recent credits include the highly anticipated Netflix animated series The Cuphead Show based on the beloved video game, the Hanna-Barbara series Jellystone for HBO Max, and two projects set in the Spongebob Squarepants universe – the Paramount+ Original Kamp Koral as well as Nickelodeon's The Patrick Star Show. Ego first got the attention of Nickelodeon in 2008 with his unabashedly original score for Amy Winfrey's series Making Fiends, and has since scored other hit animated series including SpongeBob Squarepants, Disney's Star Vs. The Forces Of Evil, as well as Nickelodeon's Welcome To The Wayne and Harvey Beaks – for which he assembled Nickelodeon's first-ever 60-piece orchestra! His next scoring projects are pair of Richard Elfman movies. The first is a sci-fi comedy titled Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens, & Geeks, and features Rebecca Forsythe, George Wendt, and Verne Troyer in his final role. The second is the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic, Forbidden Zone. Plum is co-composing the original scores and songs for both movies with Danny Elfman. In an effort to bring his eclectic influences into his cartoon world, Plum has collaborated/recorded with members of XTC, DEVO, Bauhaus, Black Flag, Descendents, The Dickies, Oingo Boingo, and others. In addition, Ego Plum serves as the musical director of the Raymond Scott Electronic Ensemble and has toured the United States and Europe playing guitar with Grammy-nominated comedy-rock group Green Jellÿ, and he may or may not be a founding member of the parody heavy metal tribute band Mac Sabbath. Ego was born in East Los Angeles where he was raised by his immigrant parents. Foregoing any formal education, he sought refuge in the local punk rock music scene as a drummer and made his way as a composer up through the School of Hard Knocks where he is now a tenured professor (and sometimes, unfortunately, still a student). He may have been small in stature, but Verne Troyer had a giant personality. In a career that spanned 25 years he starred on the big screen as Mini-Me, Little Santa, Alien Son and Baby Joe - but off it he was a total sweetheart. Actress and co-star Mindy Sterling and director Richard Elfman fondly remember the life of the 2'8”, 35-pound movie icon.

Richard Elfman is a filmmaker, musician, writer, surrealist. His 1980 film Forbidden Zone has gained a cult following for its bizarre plotting, outlandish characters and breaking of stereotypes. Four decades on and a sequel is in pre-production, hot on the heels of Richard's new film (due out later in 2019), the equally bizarre Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens and Geeks.Robert met up with Richard at his home in Hollywood for an informal chat about Richard's work earlier this year. During a candid conversation, fuelled by fine cigars and whiskey (or was it whisky?) they talk about life on the fringes of Hollywood, working with family, the highs and lows of the industry, Forbidden Zone, Ireland and Hollywood history.WARNING: Listener discretion is advised. Some of the language used may cause offence. We have elected not to edit out any of the content so as to present the conversation as frankly as possible.

Holy hell, we've been whisked away to the sixth dimension. Musical numbers with nudity, incredibly french people, Danny Elfman, another Elfman, and wonders beyond your imagination await you in, Forbidden Zone,1980. Directed by Richard Elfman.
When Richard Elfman laughs, he commits his entire body to the act. It’s deep, hearty and infectious. The consummate entertain and raconteur, Elfman pours us both a glass of scotch, describing his last big barbecue and inviting me to his next, should I pass through the parts again. A number of recent guests also happened to appear his his upcoming film, Hipsters, Gangsters, Aliens and Geeks. It’s was completing on a shoestring budget, with the help of many favors, but the director is convinced its his best to date. If all goes according to plan, it will help finance Forbidden Zone 2 — the long awaited followup to his 1980 black and white cult musical classic. The film, which launched his film directing career, was assembled as a showcase for Elfman’s theatrical musical act, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. That act, under a truncated name, would later find mainstream pop success, courtesy of Elfman’s preternaturally talented younger brother, Danny. Richard, meanwhile, has found an avenue for creative passions in a wide of outlets, from theater, to prose, to a lifelong passion for Afro-Cuban percussion.
