In this episode, we engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Stephen Kosslyn, former Harvard professor and dean, who has spent decades at the forefront of psychology, neurology, and educational sciences. Kosslyn shares his journey from academia to leading AI-driven educational startups, highlighting the critical differences between passive and active learning. He emphasizes the importance of 'learning by using'—a method where knowledge is applied in real-world, open-ended situations, which leads to better retention and creative application.Kosslyn discusses how AI can serve as a cognitive amplifier, helping learners by storing vast amounts of information and enhancing critical and creative thinking. He also addresses the limitations of AI in handling context-specific, open-ended problems, which humans still navigate better. Drawing from his extensive experience, Kosslyn shares insights from his upcoming book, 'Learning to Flourish in the Age of AI,' set to be released in December. He underscores the enduring value of the humanities in an AI-driven world. Former Harvard professor and best-selling author Todd Rose explains the problem with prestigious colleges and how the future of higher ed could be bright. Education is and always will be the great equalizer - the best vehicle for enabling people to actually live the kind of lives they want to live. What people don't want is essentially the education system we have right now. A standardized system with standardized assessments, leading to standardized outcomes that treats every kid exactly the same. But here's the good news - there are incredible institutions of higher education who are giving us a vision of what the future of higher education will be. They are doing things that are modularized, individualized, customized using credentials instead of diplomas, to create better signals for employers. Collective Illusions is a 9-part series brought to you by Stand Together: a community of changemakers tackling our biggest challenges. ----------------------------------------------- About Todd Rose: Todd Rose is the co-founder and president of Populace, a think tank committed to ensuring that all people have the opportunity to pursue fulfilling lives in a thriving society. Prior to Populace, he was a faculty member at Harvard University where he founded the Laboratory for the Science of Individuality and directed the Mind, Brain, and Education program. Todd is the best selling author of Collective Illusions, Dark Horse, and The End of Average. This episode is brought to you by Lumebox and Air Doctor. Our modern world is saturated with blue light exposure, from our devices at home to those in the workplace. With chronic exposure to artificial light and insufficient exposure to sunlight, we often overlook the long-term impact on our circadian rhythms. Today's guest joins us to raise awareness about blue light exposure and urges us to make simple changes in our daily routines to mitigate the risk of chronic disease. Today, on The Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with Dr. Martin Moore-Ede. Dr. Moore-Ede discusses the risks of chronic blue light exposure and its impact on our health. Specifically, he highlights alarming research showing how it disrupts our circadian rhythms and increases breast cancer rates among women with exposure. Dr. Moore-Ede also explores the correlation between light exposure and obesity and sheds light on why these dangers aren't widely discussed in mainstream media. Dr. Martin Moore-Ede is a highly respected expert in circadian rhythms and light's impact on our health. As a former professor at Harvard Medical School, he has conducted extensive research on the role of light in regulating our sleep-wake cycles and overall well-being. Dr. Moore-Ede's groundbreaking work includes the discovery of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, a crucial biological clock in the brain that controls our daily rhythms. He has contributed significantly to our understanding of how blue light, particularly from LED sources, can disrupt our circadian rhythms and lead to various health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, and even breast cancer. With his expertise, Dr. Moore-Ede advocates for adopting better lighting practices, emphasizing the importance of using the right type of light at the right time to optimize employee health and productivity. In a case that has sparked shock and outrage, Denise Lodge, the wife of a former Harvard Medical School morgue manager, has pleaded guilty to charges related to the theft and transportation of human remains. Lodge's guilty plea, entered on Friday, April 12, comes as part of a plea deal aimed at resolving the complex legal proceedings surrounding the case. Lodge's attorney, Hope Lefeber, revealed that her client's decision to plead guilty was influenced by her health concerns and a desire to move past the legal ordeal. Lefeber remarked, "She is very ill and wanted to put this chapter of life behind her and not have the stress of ongoing legal proceedings." The charges against Lodge stem from the actions of her husband, Cedric Lodge, who managed the morgue for the Anatomical Gifts Program at Harvard Medical School. Cedric Lodge stands accused of pilfering organs and body parts from cadavers donated for medical research and education over a four-year period, from 2018 to 2022. The stolen remains, which included heads, brains, skin, and bones, were allegedly taken without the knowledge or permission of Harvard Medical School. The shocking revelations have reverberated through the community, with families of the deceased expressing profound dismay and betrayal. Darlene Lynch, the daughter of Nick Pichowicz, a donor whose remains were among those stolen, recalled her parents' wish to donate to science to help others. Lynch expressed her family's feelings of betrayal, stating, "We feel extremely betrayed by these individuals and the school." Harvard Medical School officials condemned Cedric Lodge's actions as an "abhorrent betrayal" in a joint statement issued by George Q. Daley, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Edward M. Hundert, dean for Medical Education. The statement emphasized the institution's commitment to upholding the trust placed in it by donors and announced plans for an external review of the Anatomical Gift Program and morgue policies. The case has drawn attention not only to the ethical considerations surrounding the handling of human remains but also to the need for enhanced security measures and oversight within medical institutions. As the legal proceedings continue to unfold, stakeholders are grappling with the implications of this disturbing breach of trust within the medical community. I can't believe I have put out 100 episodes. I truly hope that you have enjoyed listening as much as I enjoy creating them. Hopefully over these 100 shows you have found a few helpful tips to help you train for your next obstacle course race. As always I have a great one lined up for you today. It has been a whirlwind week spending spring break in Hawaii and then hopping on a flight to Houston to watch UCONN with the Men's National Championship. It was a great time but I'm definitely feeling it this week trying to catch up. In my research review this week I share an study comparing to training protocols and measuring their effectiveness for muscle size, strength, power, and body composition. The two strategies used were block periodization and mixed session periodization. Which one came out on top? You will have to listen in to see and how you may want to adjust your training plan. In the Inside Mike's Mind segment I share my 3 step process to improving mobility. If you are like me you have to work hard to get better mobility. If you want to see improvements that last, just follow these 3 simple steps. In this episode I interviewed Former Harvard professor and world-renowned clinical researcher Dr. Robert Wolfe. He is also the Co-founder and lead scientist at Amino Co. which was founded by world leaders in amino acid clinical research for the purpose of conducting cutting-edge medical research on amino-acid based products. Amino Co's research, first funded by NASA, was developed by Dr. Robert R Wolfe and Dr. Wolfe's studies have been conducted with support from competitive research grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Space Biomedical Institute, US Department of Defense, The US Department of Agriculture, as well as the US Olympic Committee, and the International Olympic Committee. We had an incredible chat discussing the role of essential amino acids and research he has conducted in a variety of populations. We covered older individuals that have issues consuming enough protein and preventing muscle loss, research on army ranger training and dealing in an incredibly stressful and undernourished situation, as well as muscle recover and performance. I know you will get a ton out of this interview and I was grateful to have Dr. Wolfe share his expertise with me. Don't forget to check out all of Amino Company's products at www.aminoco.com/OCR. Earlier this year, two professors at Tufts University rediscovered a book buried deep in their library. It was called Maladie de Famine or The Disease of Starvation. The story behind this scientific research is stunning. During the Nazi occupation of Poland, hundreds of thousands of Jews were detained in the Warsaw Ghetto, deprived of food and subject to mass executions. Jewish doctors disobeyed their Nazi captors and recorded the effects of starvation on their own bodies as a testimony against the atrocities. Their work eventually shaped the Geneva Conventions of 1949, when the starving of civilians became a war crime. Why did these doctors do this? One answer is that they believed there was meaning to life and death, and therefore to their work. Former Harvard chaplain D. Elton Trueblood said, “A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.”

Former Harvard lacrosse player shared his in-depth, personal story about coming out to his teammates last fall. He follows up with a conversation about the language of homophobia in the locker room, the brotherhood of his Harvard teammates and what lacrosse can do to be more inclusive.
Legal scholar and former Harvard University Law School Dean, Martha Minow, joined the show for a no-holds-barred conversation about life and law. Alan Gurvey and guest host Anne Bremner, who is fresh off a $98 million win in the Susan Powell case, discussed Martha's new book “When Should Law Forgive?” They also spoke about the academic's storied career teaching at a prestigious institution for nearly four decades. Plus, Alan and Anne got the goods from Martha about what it was like having former President Barack Obama as a student (who later said, "I had a teacher who changed my life"), and her experience of being named as a possible candidate for the Supreme Court. Don't Gurvey's Law on Sundays at 5 p.m. PST on KABC-AM 790 TalkRadio and live at kabc.com!
BizNews — As South Africa moves to level three of the lockdown, President Cyril Ramaphosa told the nation that the early intervention in the Covid-19 epidemic did help to contain it, but until there is a vaccine available, the virus will continue to spread in the population. Biznews spoke to former Harvard Medical Professor William Haseltine, who is known for his pioneering work on HIV/Aids and cancer, about the steps that South Africa could take to deal with the pandemic. His message was that ‘no country should count on a vaccine’; and there are other steps that South Africa could take against the virus. He also said there was more hope in treatments and practices that worked in other parts of the world. Prof Haseltine who has founded a dozen biotechnology companies and is the chair and president of ACCESS Health International also shared an equation he came up with how we can determine our risk of infection during the Covid-19 pandemic. – Linda van Tilburg

Scott Soshnick, Eben Novy-Williams and Michael Barr discuss a host of issues related to the business of sports, including what it means for Harvard University’s football program to have one of its former players score a touchdown in the Super Bowl. Former Harvard standout Kyle Juszczyk of the San Francisco 49ers scored in this past weekend’s NFL championship against the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs, becoming the first Crimson player to record a touchdown on sports’ biggest stage. We discuss what it means for the program with Harvard coach Tim Murphy. Also discussed are Steve Cohen’s pursuit of the New York Mets, which may have hit a snag, the Boston Red Sox’s trade of Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars decision play two home games in London. Monday, January 27, 2020: The Democratic impeachment managers from House launch a desperate 11th hour "Hail Mary" rolling out former White House adviser John Bolton. A neocon who was fired by Trump over his constant "bomb Iran" war-mongering, Bolton is a disgruntled former employee who lacks credibility. The facts remain that Trump did release the aid and Zelensky began no investigation of Biden to get a meeting or to get the aid. This is overshadowed by the effective defense Jay Sekulow and Pat Cipollone. Tuesday, January 28, 2020: Arthur & Craig discuss the continuing Senate consideration of the House articles of impeachment. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi made a respectful yet strongly pointed presentation destroying the arguments of the House Managers that here is no basis for concern regarding the Biden family activities in the Ukraine and other countries former Vice President Joe Biden was point man for the Obama administration. Bondi's presentation was fact-based, specific, wide-ranging, and well sourced. Former Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, constitutional law and criminal law scholar and civil libertarian, dismantled each and every point made in the House impeachment articles, and by the House Managers. The contrast between the hysterical, lie-based, speculative harangue of Schiff et al, and the calm, rational, respectful, fact-based, Constitution-preserving presentation of Dershowitz was devastating to the fantasies of left. Conclusion: The only appropriate additional "witness" testimony that should be provided to the Senate is that of the secret appearance by ICIG Michael Atkinson, which Schiff is guarding with his political life. It is time to end the madness. Wednesday, January 29, 2020: John Bolton is one of the "NeoCons" that trace back to Philosopher Leo Strauss in their graduate school experience, prior to advising George W. Bush to go to war in Iraq over "weapons of mass destruction" they believed Saddam Hussein possessed. In the last 24 hours, evidence is developing to expose Rep. Adam Schiff's role in the socialist Democratic "resistance" movement responsible for both the Russiagate and the Ukrainegate hoaxes. The debate in the Senate over whether or not to allow witnesses will face a vote on this Friday. Thursday, January 30, 2020: The tide turned in the Senate impeachment trial last night during the first question & answer phase. What became clear is that the Democrats did not make their case, as Reps. Schiff and Nadler repeated their unproven "parody" version of a quid pro quo (or bribery, or extortion) in describing the July 2019 phone call between President Trump and President Zelensky of Ukraine. Law Professor Dershowitz was devastating in his analysis that the article of impeachment failed to reach the threshold of describing impeachable offenses. Sidney Powell, attorney for General Michael Flynn, submitted to U.S. District Judge Sullivan an extremely powerful motion to dismiss Flynn's guilty plea because of DOJ prosecutorial misconduct as documented by the recently released Horowtiz Report on FISA Court abuse. Friday, January 31, 2020: Today is an historic day. Great Britain finally pulls out of the EU, four years after the 2016 Brexit vote. The same day, today, the Senate will end the impeachment in acquittal. President Trump will remain in office and in 2020, he will be re-elected. In 2016, Brexit preceded the Trump election victory -- this is being repeated in 2020. Attorney Sidney Powell has filed a motion in General Flynn's case to withdraw his guilty plea because of massive DOJ/FBI and Muller Office of Special Counsel prosecutorial misconduct. We will review the evidence of government crimes in Flynn's case.

Former Harvard law professor and current Fox News contributor Alan Dershowitz says the hearings today in the House Judiciary Committee and Intelligence Committee create a "terrible precedent." The Professor argue these partisan proceedings undercut the American system of justice, the presumption of innocence, and the long tradition of prosecutors simply deciding whether to indict or not. Do you agree?
#162: How will artificial intelligence, AI, impact jobs? Former Harvard president and leading economist Larry Summers predicts that one-third of men will be out of work by 2050. Finance guru Suze Orman says not to be surprised if we see 25 percent unemployment by 2030. And major research institutions predict anywhere from 14 percent to 50 percent unemployment. But could this really be possible? Or is everyone panicking about what will essentially be a shift in the types of jobs that people hold — reminiscent of our shift from farm to factory, and from factory to office — but not an actual net job loss? To answer these questions, we talk to Darrell West, author of The Future of Work, about artificial intelligence, robots, and the future of jobs. Molly Tissenbaum is a former Harvard Hockey Goalie and currently serves as a Research Analyst at the Sports Innovation Lab in Boston, MA. I came across Molly's story of overcoming post-concussion syndrome on the Concussion Legacy Foundation's "My Legacy" page. Molly's first concussion happened when she was just 13 years old after taking a puck to the facemask while training with some older boys. Molly went to school at Premier Elite Athletics Collegiate (PEAC) which is a school for elite athletes. There were very few female hockey players at this school so she frequently got to play with the boys. Which proved to be a double-edged sword in this situation. After asking if the puck went in the net, she immediately knew something was wrong and took herself out. Molly stayed home from school for about a week, and when her symptoms cleared, she went back to school, and within 2 weeks she was back on the ice without symptoms (the way it should work!). At the time of the first concussion Molly was wearing a junior level mask instead of the superior senior-level mask. During our conversation we talked about the difference between junior and senior-level masks. Molly also believes that her mask wasn’t fitted properly, which is especially important for females with pony tails. Molly recommends getting your mask fitted by someone reputable and don’t worry about what your hair looks like. She found that the best fit comes when you leave an inch between where you tie your hair and the back plate of the mask. Here is a link to a blog post on proper goalie mask fit. The second time Molly suffered a concussion was two years later in a playoff game when she was 15. In the second period of a 0-0 tie, she got hit in the head with a stick across the left side of her head. She was in a butterfly (on her knees to cover the bottom of the net), when a puck was flipped in the air towards her. The girl on the opposing team took a swing to try and bat it out of the air and missed, but made clear contact with the side of her head. Having suffered a concussion at 13, she knew immediately that something was off. She remembers looking up to see who hit her and struggled to determine if the number was 13 or 31. The numbers looked like they were dancing. But it was only the second period, and her team had to win this game in order to advance to the provincial championship tournament. So she finished that game and her team ended up winning. Molly remained silent because she only had 2 weeks until the tournament. She was a leader and the starting goalie. She felt that her team needed her, so she tried to tough it out for the sake of the team. "At no point did it occur to my 15-year-old self that I might be hurting myself, or even the team, by playing through a concussion." Molly struggled with post-concussion symptoms for nearly six months. Her academics were severely impacted throughout this time, and teachers began to notice that something was off because the quality of her work declined. She eventually recovered enough to be named valedictorian of her graduating class and get into the most prestigious university in the United States. She credits her teachers support and patience throughout the difficult times she encountered following her second concussion. Concussion #3 was actually not sports-related. Her family got into a car accident on move-in weekend of Molly's sophomore year at Harvard. Mollys first thought after impact was "thats the end of my career." This accident triggered post-concussion symptoms that forced Molly to take a medical leave of absence for a year. Molly and I dive in to her struggles with symptoms and isolation during this time. Below are some more talking points during our conversation: How Molly fell in love with the goalie position after giving up 18 points in her first game. Common mechanisms for goalie concussions The Ice Guardians Documentary Rules in place to protect goalies The importance of academic support during PCS recovery Healing with time and rest The role of a muscle activation therapist Dealign with FOMO during PCS recovery Focusing on what you can do rather than what you can't The lack of a blueprint for concussion recovery Finding a new normal Why you need to be honest with yourself and prioritize your mental health to stay healthy Molly's transition to life after hockey, and why thinking about your future is not selfish Molly's work with The Butterfly Cares organization Where can you find Molly?
