As global tensions and conflict in the Middle East threaten the flow of oil into Australia, the warning signs are flashing. While we aren't out of fuel yet, regional towns are already seeing shortages, prices at the bowser are climbing, and supply is at risk of running low. So, how much do we really have left, and why is our 'just-in-time' delivery system so vulnerable to international shocks? Today, we're joined by the NRMA's Peter Khoury to explain where our fuel actually comes from and how many days of reserves we have left. Plus, consumer behaviour expert Dr Paul Harrison joins us to discuss the psychology of panic buying and how this shortage will eventually hit your grocery bill and your commute.

Episode 16 of The TWENTY30 Podcast hosted by Hanaa Almoaibed and Lucien Zeigler once again finds the two hosts on direct opposite sides of the planet, with Hanaa in Singapore speaking at a conference and Lucien on vacation at his home in the United States. Listener feedback takes a light-hearted turn with comments on Lucien's “improving” tan, leading to a broader discussion on the cultural implications and personal anecdotes surrounding names and their meanings in different regions. The episode's DEEP DIVE centers on a comprehensive new report from the Energy Institute, co-authored by KPMG and Kearney, detailing fossil fuel use in 2023. The report reveals that global fossil fuel consumption, driven largely by coal and oil, has reached record levels, with emissions surpassing 40 gigatons of CO2. The hosts discuss the urgency of these findings amidst a warming planet and increasing climate change impacts. They point out that although there is notable growth in renewable energy sources like wind and solar, especially in Europe and China, fossil fuels are still ever as dominant.   The hosts wrap the episode with a discussion of some of the latest news and reports on Saudi Arabia.   In the news this week: •We begin with the Saudi Journalists Association's first-ever participation in the International Federation of Journalists' annual meeting, held in London. This milestone event marks a significant step for Saudi journalism on the global stage, as representatives from around the world gather to discuss the state of journalism, the challenges it faces, and the importance of international cooperation.   •A crucial worker safety regulation introduced by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. Starting June 15th, 2024, a ban on working under direct sunlight between noon and 3 p.m. will be enforced. This measure aims to enhance the safety and health of outdoor workers during the scorching summer months, preventing heat-related illnesses and improving overall worker productivity. The importance of such regulations is underscored as Saudi Arabia strives for rapid and safe development.   •Saudi Arabia's achievements in the cybersecurity sector. The kingdom has secured second place in the Global Cybersecurity Index and made significant gains in the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) for 2023. With a notable jump in the overall competitiveness ranking, Saudi Arabia has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening its cybersecurity landscape. The National Cybersecurity Authority plays a pivotal role in protecting the nation's critical infrastructure and economic sectors from cyber threats, showcasing Saudi Arabia's leadership in this vital area.   •Brazilian planemaker Embraer's strategic interest in Saudi Arabia as a key defense market. As Saudi Arabia looks to replace its aging fleet of Lockheed Martin's C-130 Hercules, Embraer is engaging with the kingdom to expand sales of its C390 Millennium military transport jet. This potential purchase highlights Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to modernize its defense capabilities and bolster its strategic partnerships.   •The Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) has published the annual performance report for the Saudi finance and real estate company sector for 2023. The report reveals a notable increase in paid-up share capital, total assets, and net income, reflecting the sector's solid financial performance and expanding economic landscape. The classification of loan portfolios and the importance of supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are also discussed, providing insights into Saudi Arabia's diversified economic growth.   Hanaa concludes the show by sharing the Arabic word/phrase of the day.   Subscribe for free wherever you get your podcasts:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0uuKNWrgbQPMBIx3XY6YGU   Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-twenty30/id1742574206   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetwenty30   Get episodes and exclusive content delivered to your email inbox free: https://twenty30.beehiiv.com/   You can also email the show's hosts with their first names (Lucien @TheTWENTY30.com) or (Hanaa @thetwenty30.com) or email Hosts @ TheTwenty30.com.   The TWENTY30 Podcast is a production of The TWENTY30 Media Group, LLC.    ©The TWENTY30. Davenport writes: “The new mileage standards announced by the Transportation Department are among several regulations the administration is using to prod carmakers to produce more electric vehicles. In April, the Environmental Protection Agency issued strict new limits on tailpipe pollution that are designed to ensure that the majority of new passenger cars and light trucks sold in the United States are all-electric or hybrids by 2032, up from 7.6 percent last year.” You can listen to the full show here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/07/climate/biden-mileage-electric-vehicles.html 3:15pm- On Thursday, former President Donald Trump spoke with Dr. Phil. Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School Podcast! This podcast is going to be all about providing student pilots with ANOTHER way that they can consume the Private Pilot curriculum. The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it. The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school. You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive. This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture. Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 350 students take and pass their Private Pilot exams without a SINGLE STUDENT FAILING. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more. Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast.   Episode 63: In this episode, we uncover the vital importance of Fuel Consumption & Planning in aviation. Beyond being the lifeblood of aircraft, fuel plays a multifaceted role in aviation operations. We explore the delicate balance between carrying sufficient fuel for a safe journey and avoiding the excess weight that can impact an aircraft's performance. Proper fuel planning also translates to increased flexibility in flight routes, improved passenger comfort, and compliance with essential regulatory standards.   Links mentioned in the episode: Online Ground School: https://parttimepilot.com/private-pilot-online-ground-school/?utm_source=podcast How to Become a Private Pilot FREE Course: https://parttimepilot.com/free-how-to-become-a-pilot/ Ultimate Private Pilot Test Prep Book: https://amzn.to/40LSyLM Calculate Ground Speed Video: https://youtu.be/w156aPpdzWU Calculate Magnetic Heading Video: https://youtu.be/QFYoAMrOiUE      15% Off Aviation Headsets Discount: Part Time Pilot Students & Listeners can now receive 15% off & Free Shipping on Kore Aviation Headsets using the coupon code 'parttimepilot': https://www.koreheadset.com/discount/parttimepilot

"I'm comparing a Landcruiser Troopie with a new Prado. The Troopie has a V8 with 151kW & 430Nm. The Prado has an inline four-cylinder with 150kW & 500Nm. (Approximately the same power/torque.) But the Troopy uses about 15L/100 compared to the Prado at 10L/100 (both ballpark real world figures, not the ADR fantasies). "If they output about the same power, where is the big difference in fuel economy coming from? The weight of each car? Aerodynamics? Gearing? Feeding four extra cylinders, with extra engine internal friction? "If they were the same weight, and had the same Cd value, would they accelerate/overtake the same and have the same fuel usage, even though one is V8 and one an I4?" - David Deere The data: Diesel = 45 kJ/g (and if you do that once a second = 45kW) So, 2.2g/sec = 100kW (of potential heat energy) Combustion efficiency = 40% = 40kW @ crankshaft 15% loss via transmission = 34kW @ wheels Prado: 2.755cc 6sp (5th = 0.687:1, 6th = 0.580:1, diff = 3.91:1) 265/65R17 (Circ. = 2.26m) 150kW @ 3400rpm 500Nm @ 1600-2800rpm Bore x stroke: 92.0 x 103.6mm ADR economy: 7.9 (combined, L/100km) Kerb weight: 2325 (GXL) 100km/h = 27.8m/s = 737 wheel rpm = 2883 tailshaft rpm = 1672 engine rpm (6th) = 1981 engine rpm (5th) Total swept cylinder area = 120,000 mm^2 Troopie: 5sp (5th = 0.75:1, diff = 3.91:1) 225/95R16 (Circumf = 2.62m) 4.461cc (+62% move volume) 151 @ 3400rpm 430Nm @ 1200-3200rpm Bore x stroke: 86.0 x 96.0mm ADR economy: 10.7 (L/100km) - about 35% higher than Prado Kerb weight 2265kg 100km/h = 27.8m/s = 636 wheel rpm = 2487 tailshaft rpm = 1865 engine rpm (5th) = 11.5% higher than Prado in 6th Total swept cylinder area = 207,000 mm^2 = 72.5% more area than Prado ** but at 100km/h rpms are also 11.5% higher, so total cylinder wall friction = 81% higher (ballpark) ** Hyundai/Kia 2.2 @ 147 kW & 440 Nm I4 ** Mazda 2.2 @ 140 kW & 450 Nm I4 Plus: Troopy needs to drive twice as many valves to do the same job, pumping more oil and water, etc. (Not as volumetrically efficient, and higher pumping losses, etc.) And the single turbo 4.5 V8 is a rubbish engine - like it’s the cheap, slutty version of the 4.5 TT, which makes 32.5% more peak power, 51% more peak torque and returns slightly better fuel economy - despite being in a platform weighing 500kg more.

Guest: Arlene Inouye, Simon Pirani Arlene Inouye, Secretary of the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) and Co-Chair of the Negotiations Team on how important the LAUSD strike, beginning January 14, is for public education, indeed, for the public. UTLA is demanding that LAUSD negotiate a fair agreement that addresses class size, funding for nurses, librarians, a halt to further privatization through charterization, and teacher pay -- or face teachers on picket lines. After the spectacular Red State teachers strikes of last year, the LAUSD strike has enormous potential in practical and inspirational terms ''' for labor and community as a whole.Simon Pirani, Senior Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford Institute for Energy Studies on his new book, "Burning Up: a global history of fossil fuel consumption," that traces the inexorable increase in oil, gas and coal use since the mid 20th century - and shows how consumption growth accelerated since the discovery of global warming in the 1980s. He argues that fuels are mainly consumed through technological systems, which are in turn embedded in social, economic and political systems - and that the transition away from fossil fuels will mean the transformation of all of these.

After a multi-year decline, global carbon emissions are on the upswing. The International Energy Agency now says that emissions grew in 2017 -- caused by an increase oil, natural gas and coal demand. Nearly three-quarters of new energy demand across the globe was served by fossil fuels. At the same time, America saw another yearly drop in carbon emissions, which IEA says was assisted by renewables. But with more and more carbon-free nuclear plants slated for closure across the U.S., many worry the trend will end.In this week's Energy Gang, we'll look at trends in global energy demand. We'll also look to the situation in the U.S., where concerns about losing nuclear are growing. Then, we'll talk about FirstEnergy Solutions' bankruptcy. Could the company find a way to save its nuclear plants by compromising with renewables advocates? Finally, EPA chief Scott Pruitt is cutting back on Obama-era fuel efficiency standards. We’ll explore the consequences. Are CAFE standards even the right policy? The Energy Gang is brought to you by Sense. Frank Will, Senior Lecturer of School of Engineering, was recently selected to travel to Canberra to meet with politicians for his research into improving fuel consumption in motor vehicles. A system being developed by researchers in the School of Engineering that uses wasted engine heat to reduce engine friction in motor vehicles has demonstrated fuel consumption reductions of over seven per cent in preliminary testing

The OVER7 design: A typical car engine wastes about 80 per cent of the fuel consumed. Only 20 per cent of the fuel’s energy is used to drive the car forward. The rest is lost as heat. He believes his invention – which he has named OVER7™ – represents a smarter approach to vehicle engine design. The system, which can be retrofitted, works by diverting waste heat to bring engine oil up to its optimal operating temperature. It was developed by researchers at Deakin University led by Mr Frank Will of the School of Engineering during his PhD project.
