Marshall Rabil is the third-generation President and CEO of Hubbard Peanut Company, the country's oldest specialty peanut brand, famously known as "Hubs." Founded by his grandparents in 1954 in Sedley, Virginia, Hubs is a household name celebrated for its super extra-large Virginia peanuts. Before taking the helm, Marshall cultivated a global perspective, working in sustainable development and education in Japan and around the world. He later gained invaluable industry experience as a specialty food buyer at Whole Foods, inspired by the principles of Conscious Capitalism. In 2016, Marshall returned to his roots, bringing a vision to blend the company's rich tradition with modern innovation, community engagement, and long-term growth.SHOW SUMMARYIn this episode, host Jonathan Goldhill sits down with Marshall Rabil to explore the journey of leading a 70-year-old family legacy into the future. Marshall shares how his experiences abroad, from Japanese villages to international development projects, shaped his desire to use the family business as a catalyst for positive change in his own rural Virginia community. We dive into the nuts and bolts of this transformation, from turning an old grocery store into a vibrant community hub to competing against private equity-backed giants. Marshall offers a candid look at the delicate balancing act of honoring his grandparents' legacy while implementing new technology, marketing strategies, and, most importantly, navigating the complex dynamics of family ownership and succession.KEY TAKEAWAYSBusiness as a Community Catalyst: Marshall is using the business as a force for good, transforming an old grocery store into "The Hubs Vine," a community event space, and forging deep partnerships with the local food bank through initiatives like the "Homegrown Harvest" festival. The Value of Outside Experience: The Rabil family mantra was to "go and work for someone else first." Marshall's time in international education and at Whole Foods provided him with a unique perspective that has been crucial for innovating within the family business.Navigating the Private Equity Wave: Instead of selling to private equity firms that are acquiring competitors, the Rabil family chose to reinvest in their business. Hubs differentiates itself by focusing on its premium quality, its authentic story, and strategic partnerships with brands like Orvis. The Toughest Challenge is Family Alignment: Marshall reveals that the most critical and time-consuming challenge isn't operations or scaling, but getting the multi-generational family owners aligned on corporate governance, especially the buy-sell agreement.Modernizing a Legacy Brand: Marshall is spearheading the adoption of new technologies, from a sophisticated Shopify Plus website and data analytics tools to exploring automation on the production line, ensuring the brand remains relevant.Patience in a Legacy Business: Leading a 70-year-old company requires patience. Marshall emphasizes the need to take a step back, understand different family perspectives, and accept that meaningful change takes time.QUOTES"I was really starting to think how can business, um, be a catalyst for change in our community?""I was always encouraged to go out and do something before you want to come back here. So that was always kind of our family mantra was, you need to go and work for someone else first.""I think our value has multiplied because of some of those efforts. But it required a lot of work.""Of the seven things that you mentioned, that [family alignment on corporate governance] is the one that is taking the most time and attention... because you have to get the family on board.""I have to remind myself too, you know, take a step back. You'll get there. I like things to happen a little quicker than they do sometimes."Connect and learn more about Marshall Rabil and Hubbard Peanut Company:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marshall-rabil-83a24a15/Company LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hubbard-peanut-company-inc/If you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe, review, and share with a friend who would benefit from the message. Come on a ride with Max as he tells his journey from Don Estridge Middle Scholl all the way to Yale Medical School. Max will explain how he graduated College before he graduated High School. He was told he was too young to go to Medical School at the ripe old age of 18. He did not take that as a set back, he figured out how to shift to Brain Research. To make matters worse, he was not selected for his first choice of matching Colleges. This just helped him grow even more as person. Max is the true testament that hard work in and out of the classroom will payoff. If you just keep moving forward, you will find success, or it will find you. Thank you gain for listening, and if you could, like, subscribe, or 5 star, it would be greatly appreciated.

When you think of Virginia's finest food and drink, you might think of Virginia ham, Virginia oysters, and Virginia wine. But Marshall Rabil suggests Virginia peanuts should be atop that list. Rabil should know a thing or two about peanuts. (36:35) His grandparents, Dot and HJ Hubbard, started Hubbard Peanut Company, which you may now know as Hubs, in Sedley, Virginia, back in 1954. (21:07) Rabil shared his family's peanut story with Scott and Robey, plus shared details about the upcoming Homegrown Harvest Festival he helped create as a showcase for restaurants and food purveyors in that part of Virginia. (50:11) "I've been in Charleston, New York, I think Richmond is really growing as a food destination. I think it's going to be known as one of the greatest places to eat in the country. It's slow. I mean, the restaurant scene has popped off, but I don't think that Tidewater, Virginia gets the credit that it deserves as the culinary destination with the bounty of ingredients that we have from the Chesapeake Bay and the ocean and all of our farms and the farmers that are raising animals sustainably," he said. "So I always wanted to work with chefs and bring a party to Southampton County and Franklin. And so last year we created this festival to benefit the Food Bank and the CROP Foundation. And this year we've kind of expanded it." Click here for ticket and schedule information. Other topics discussed on this episode of Eat It, Virginia include: A new bagel place in Richmond (2:30) The opening of Toast at Scott's Walk (5:10) Gelati Celesti Turns 40 (6:25) The opening of Southern Kitchen at Stony Point Fashion Park (10:40) The thought process behind Richmond restaurants offering (or not offering) reservations (11:40) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meet Mike Rabil, the co-founder and CEO of the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL), a groundbreaking sports league that has revitalized the sport of lacrosse in North America. With his brother Paul, a legendary lacrosse player, Mike embarked on a remarkable journey that led to the creation of the PLL. The league, founded in 2018, aimed to bring a new energy to the sport by traveling to major cities and showcasing the incredible talents of lacrosse players through a 14-week regular season. Mike's upbringing played a significant role in shaping his entrepreneurial spirit. As the son of a Lebanese father, he grew up with a strong work ethic and a penchant for staying busy. He exhibited his entrepreneurial flair early on, from shoveling driveways and selling lemonade to working various jobs during his high school and college years. Mike's love for sports, particularly lacrosse, combined with his family's emphasis on pursuing diverse interests, fueled his passion for the game and teamwork. The journey to founding the PLL was not without its challenges. Mike and Paul experienced moments of doubt, facing obstacles while pitching their ideas and securing investments. There were times when they faced setbacks and difficult decisions, such as when a crucial investor meeting was unexpectedly canceled. However, their perseverance, coupled with support from mentors and a strong network, kept them moving forward. Key factors in the league's success included a visionary approach to social media and digital engagement. Recognizing the power of social media to connect with fans, the PLL embraced innovative ways to interact with its audience, from behind-the-scenes content to unique engagement tools within its app. Mike's understanding of the importance of sales skills also played a pivotal role in securing sponsorships and partnerships that have propelled the league's growth. Explore the pivotal moments when doubt could have derailed their dreams, but perseverance, mentorship, and a forward-thinking approach prevailed. As we celebrate the PLL's fifth season and its soaring success, Mike Rabil's story serves as a testament to the fusion of sports, entrepreneurship, and unyielding determination. Don't miss out on this episode as we uncover the transformative power of passion, innovation, and the pursuit of excellence. Tune in now and witness firsthand the evolution of a league changing the game – both on and off the field.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.31.514533v1?rss=1 Authors: Stewart, A., Davis, G. L., Areal, L. B., Rabil, M. J., Tran, V., Mayer, F. P., Blakely, R. D. Abstract: Identified across multiple psychiatric disorders, the dopamine (DA) transporter (DAT) Ala559Val substitution triggers non-vesicular, anomalous DA efflux (ADE), perturbing DA neurotransmission and behavior. We have shown that DAT Val559 mice display a waiting impulsivity and changes in cognitive performance associated with enhanced reward motivation. Here, utilizing a within-subject, lever-pressing paradigm designed to bias the formation of goal-directed or habitual behavior, we demonstrate that DAT Val559 mice modulate their nose-poke behavior appropriately to match context, but demonstrate a perseverative checking behavior. Although DAT Val559 mice display no issues with the cognitive flexibility required to acquire and re-learn a visual pair-wise discrimination task, devaluation of reward evoked habitual reward seeking in DAT Val559 mutants in operant tasks regardless of reinforcement schedule. The direct DA agonist apomorphine also elicits locomotor stereotypies in DAT Val559, but not WT mice. Our observation that dendritic spine density is increased in the dorsal medial striatum (DMS) of DAT Val559 mice speaks to an imbalance in striatal circuitry that might underlie the propensity of DAT Val559 mutants to exhibit compulsive behaviors when reward is devalued. Thus, DAT Val559 mice represent a model for dissection of how altered DA signaling perturbs circuits that normally balance habitual and goal-directed behaviors. The sport of lacrosse has a long history, being one of the oldest sports in North America. But, for a long time, many players couldn't earn a living in the same way athletes could who were playing in established leagues like Major League Soccer or the National Football League. After a time as one of the best lacrosse players in the world, Paul Rabil, along with his brother Mike, an established businessman and investor, decided to start their own league that could give players a livelihood. We speak to the brothers to find out the challenges of starting a league from the ground up, and how they had to convince players to join them, and from there, we also find out how it could be going global, and why the story has been turned into a major documentary that has aired on ESPN. Presenter: Rahul Tandon, Producer: Ed Butler (Image: Paul and Mike Rabil at an event; Credit: Craig Barritt/Getty Images for Premier Lacrosse League)
Chaos defenseman Jack Rowlett joins the show to discuss defending the Chaos' title in Philadelphia against the Waterdogs (0:00-27:38) before PLL CEO Mike Rabil reflects on the culmination of the league's fourth season with a new trophy (27:39-40:36). PLL social manager Emma Adams (40:37-59:25) explains how the behind the scenes of how the league works with its players to create social media strategies and personalities.
In 1954, when Dot Hubbard wanted to start a Virginia peanut mail order business from her home in Sedley, VA, there was no system for zip codes in the United States. UPS wasn't operating in Virginia and FedEx had not yet been founded. Nevertheless, Hubbard Peanut Company was born, with business phones on party lines and a fine recipe for cooking Super Extra Large Virginia peanuts. Marshall Rabil is her grandson, and remembers riding on the conveyor belt in the early 80's as a child. He has a passion for peanuts, for the beautiful slice of the state he calls home, and the idea of how his family business just might help strengthen that community. Virginia was the first known North American location for peanuts to be planted -- a crop brought over by enslaved Africans -- and today Hubs peanuts are some of the state's tastiest exports, and don't even get me started about that peanut brittle.
It's hard to put into words what the Rabil brothers have done for the advancement of the game, specifically at the professional level. With the ESPN+ debut of "Fate of a Sport" today, the lacrosse world rejoiced as the sport and the professional game took another leap forward. The new film which is littered with lacrosse personalities follows the Paul through his journey from MLL superstar, to fed up face of the MLL, to what we now see on tv every week (The PLL). Quint sits down with co-founder and lacrosse legend Paul Rabil to discuss the documentary. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lax-all-stars/message

In this episode of the Kingdom Talks show, our guest Kathi Rabil has a deep conversation with host Adena Hodges about human knowledge, or the lack thereof. Face it: we don't know a lot, and we know even less if our hotline to God speaks Latin! So life got much better for Kathi Rabil after her priest ditched the lingo. And then she discovered that she was a priest too! After that revelation, there followed the concomitant priestly experience of feeling the fragmentation of others as though it were her own. And enjoying an effortless intuitive dialogue with her heavenly Father greatly helped Kathi avoid passing negative messages to her young children; and also to share in their innocent joys. In 2018, Mike Rabil Co-Founded and became the Chief Executive Officer of the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL). And while the COVID pandemic wreaked havoc with the fledgling League, Mike took charge and with his financial partners, consolidated the sport by merging with the much older Major League Lacrosse (MLL) entity and brought all subsequent season operations and activities to formally exist under the PLL brand and org structure. Determination and perseverance are terms we hear all to often...they're easy to say but hard to do. Listen Up!
A pioneer and disruptor in sports, Paul Rabil is a professional lacrosse player, entrepreneur and co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League. Founded in 2018, the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) features over 200 of the world's best players. The PLL's games are played through a tour-based model and are televised through a partnership with NBC in addition to PLL's major corporate partners including Ticketmaster, Adidas, Capital One, Gatorade and others. As a sports league, the entity functions similarly to a startup with Rabil spearheading a staff of likeminded individuals whose goals are to help change the world of sports. The PLL has since been ranked a Top 10 Most Innovative Company in Sports by Fast Company, and touts Rabil as the first player in sports to simultaneously be an executive of the same league. Paul was also recently named to Sports Business Journal's 40 Under 40 List in 2021. Rabil is a current midfielder for the Cannons Lacrosse Club, after spending the previous two seasons in the PLL with the Atlas Lacrosse Club. This season began in early June with successful weekends at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts and Fifth Third Bank Stadium outside of Atlanta. The PLL will visit nine other cities this season including San Jose, Washington D.C., Albany, Minneapolis, and Philadelphia, among others. During the 2020 Summer, the PLL completed their second season – a condensed version of the PLL Championship Series, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The three-week tournament featured the league's seven teams competing in a fourteen-game group play format to determine seeding for the following week's single-elimination tournament. The tournament marked the first sports entity to find a safe solution to resume play, given the effects of COVID-19. Games were broadcasted domestically & internationally in 12 countries through the PLL's deal with NBC Sports, filling the programming holes left by the 2020 Olympics. Over the three-week tournament, the official PLL social accounts garnered 161 million impressions, 17.5 million views and 90 million minutes watched. Rabil has influenced the sport at every level, winning championships and MVP's both collegiately and professionally, as well as becoming a two-time World Lacrosse Champion with Team USA. Off the field, Rabil has also found success as a business owner and investor, acquiring capital and operating Rabil Events and Rabil Ventures. In 2017, Rabil launched the award-winning “Suiting Up with Paul Rabil” Podcast, an interview-style show that hosts top athletes, entrepreneurs, and entertainers, such as Bill Belichick, Venus Williams, Gary Vaynerchuck and Adam Grant. That same year, SportTechie awarded Rabil as “Most Tech-Savvy Athlete on the Planet”, and in 2018 the Cynopsis Sports Media Award named Rabil “Best Athlete in a Web Series”. Rabil has also been named a “Top 40 Most Entrepreneurial Athlete” by Entrepreneur Magazine, alongside sports legends LeBron James and Tom Brady. Having grown up with an Auditory Processing Disorder and ADHD, Rabil started the Paul Rabil Foundation in 2011 to help children with learning differences by creating programs and partnerships through sport and scholarship. Rabil has also volunteered extensively with Harlem Lacrosse through the Premier Lacrosse League's community arm, PLL Assists. Harlem Lacrosse actively recruits special education students and students identified by school administrators as most vulnerable to academic decline and school dropout. As a result, the program serves high poverty and special education students at rates that surpass those of their standard school sites. Rabil graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2008, where he played collegiate lacrosse, and currently resides in Marina Del Rey, California.
Widely regarded as the best-known, most-influential lacrosse player in history, Paul Rabil is changing jobs, sort of. Having single-handedly pushed the sport into the mainstream since his days at Johns Hopkins, Rabil is retiring from playing to focus on running the league he and his brother created. In a wide-ranging conversation, Rabil goes deep with Jason Kelly on his career and the state of the fast-growing Premier Lacrosse League. We sit down with Marshall Rabil, director of sales and marketing of Hubs Peanuts, to talk about his third generation family business.
The Chaos started the season with two straight losses and things looked rough for them with the Whipsnakes and the Archers up next. Instead of folding and starting 0-4, the Chaos decided to upset the two best teams in the league in back-to-back games. They held the Archers to their lowest scoring output in team history winning this one 8-7 on Friday night. John Galloway played tough in cage for the Chaos putting up 13 saves in the win. Colin Heacock scored 4 goals on the day including the game winner in the fourth quarter. The Redwoods and Waterdogs blew the over/under out of the water on Saturday seeing each team score 10 first half goals. Both teams starting goalies found the bench at some point in the second half, and it was Jack Kelly getting the W in cage for the Redwoods, a great story. Kelly tore his ACL in 2018 during the World Games and this was his first action since the injury. Sergio Perkovic lead all scores in this game with 8 points off 4 goals and 2 assists (including two 2-point goals). The Cannon's may have lost to the Chaos on Saturday, but on the bright side, Paul Rabil is now professional lacrosse's (the field version) all time points leader again thanks to his 3 goal, 3 assist effort. Alas, the Chaos played the better game and pulled out the win. Josh Byrne went for 2 goals and 3 helpers in the win, and rookie's Ryan Smith and Mac O'Keefe each put up 4 points. (0:06-3:34) The girls are then joined by PLL co-founder and CEO Mike Rabil to discuss how surreal the announcement was (3:35-5:59), how long this has been in the works (6:00-7:51) and what this means for the sport of lacrosse (7:52-10:03). How the league plans on honoring the history of the MLL (10:04-13:04), why the Cannons and not the other MLL teams (13:05-14:33), and how meaningful supporters like Joe Tsai and Erika Nardini are (14:34-17:13).
