Local filmmakers Dan Adams and George Powell revisit Boston's busing crisis during the 1970s for their new film, The Walk. They began collaborating on films in an unlikely place: they met while they were both incarcerated in a Massachusetts prison.
The team sits down with Daniel Adams, Director of “The Walk“. This film has its WORLD PREMIERE at the Opening Night (8pm PT) of the 25th annual Dances with Films Festival in Los Angeles. Fandor is a proud sponsor of Dances with Films, a defiantly independent festival. The festival will run from June 9 – 19th, 2022.Daniel Adams grew up in Boston and worked in politics, including two gubernatorial campaigns, a race for attorney general, and a presidential campaign. He also garnered valuable film production experience directing television commercials for a Boston advertising agency. He then co-wrote (w/ Michael Mailer) and directed his first feature film in 1989, “A Fool and His Money” which starred Sandra Bullock, Jonathan Penner, George Plimpton and Jerzy Kosinski, released through Trimark Pictures (now LionsGate). He then went on to write and direct his second feature, the critically acclaimed “Primary Motive,” for Twentieth Century Fox which starred Judd Nelson, Justine Bateman, Richard Jordan, John Savage and Sally Kirkland, produced by Don Carmody. His third feature, which he also wrote and directed, a comedy entitled, “The Mouse,” starring Rip Torn and John Savage, released through Strand Releasing, also received positive reviews. “The Golden Boys,” which he wrote and directed, starring David Carradine, Rip Torn, Bruce Dern and Mariel Hemingway, had a very successful release through Roadside Attractions and Lions Gate Films in 2009. His next film, which he wrote and directed, released in 2010 through New Films Cinema, was “The Lightkeepers” which starred Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner. “Lightkeepers” has been the recipient of many awards, including Best Musical Score for a Comedy in 2010 (Int'l Film Music Critics Assoc), Best Supporting Actor (Bruce Dern, Methodfest), and Best Film (“Golden Angel” award at the CAFF in Los Angeles). It was chosen as the closing night film at the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival and opening night film at the Boulder International Film Festival. He directed and co-wrote (with legendary National Lampoon editor Larry “Ratso” Sloman) the satire, “An L.A. Minute” starring Gabriel Byrne, Kiersey Clemons, and Bob Balaban, which was released in theaters through Strand in August 2018. And he wrote the script for the upcoming feature film “Panama” starring Mel Gibson and Cole Hauser.“The Walk” which he directed and co-wrote (with George Powell) has already won many film festival awards including “Best Picture” and “Best Director” and has been chosen as the opening night film at the Boston International Film Festival and Dances with Films. He is currently writing a biography of American patriot James Otis and developing the book into a limited series to be co-written and produced by multi-Emmy winner Jay Kogen. Welcome to the 14 Things You Didn't Know Skateboarding podcast, where in this episode, we dive into 14 Things You Didn't Know About Powell Peralta skateboards. It all begin with George Powell in his garage, making homemade skateboards for his son in the 70's. George, an aeronautics engineer, had a knack for innovation, and loved tinkering with new ideas for making everyday things better. It wasn't long before he connected with Stacy Peralta, a pro skateboarder who had a special talent for marketing. The match was made in heaven, and the brand began growing in popularity, recruiting a team of underdogs and misfits, who would become the infamous bones brigade; Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike Mcgill, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, and Tommy Guerrero. The team topped the competition podiums for years, and released a number of industry-leading skateboard films which have now become timeless icons of skateboarding culture. However, great success can have a dark side, as Stacy and George began to argue about the future of the company; Stacy wanted to see the team disperse to start new small companies, whereas George saw this as foolish. Eventually parting ways and bringing the company temporarily to a close, Bones Brigade members parted ways to make many of the iconic brands of today: Lance started the firm, Tony started Birdhouse, Tommy started Real, and Rodney started world industries with Mike Vallely and Steve Rocco. Today, Powell Peralta continues to be an industry leader, pioneering new technologies within skateboarding; particularly with the creation of the flight deck, and Bones Swiss Bearings. While many skateboarders have enjoyed the skateboard graphics of VC Johnson over the last 40 years, his other work has largely been tucked away in private reserve, unseen, even by most of his friends and family. This collection of his works in black and white is now offered in gratitude to those who have supported, inspired and, of course, have bought his work, which has afforded him a comfortable life in his hometown of Santa Barbara, California, where he continues to live and work. Still alive and grateful, he thanks you all.“I have not paid much attention to the praise or criticism by the public, about my work over the years, but I am very grateful to the nation which has granted me such freedom of expression and I feel indebted to those who have seen to the matter of securing the right for its citizens, have encouraged it and exampled it in so many beautiful ways. Art is a game worth playing and its effects should be shared. An artists works are not always published, but when they are, they give inspiration to so many who might not otherwise see the originals. I am one such person. I am glad to have enjoyed the works of the masters in their published forms and I feel that I must share some of my work in pen, brush, woodcut and scratchboard at this time. I am not expecting to publish a book of my work any time soon, so I apologize and offer it in this form.” Artworks in black and white have a powerful charm and always will, in spite of the hypnotic effects of more modern media and the sexy sophistication of the digital age. To those artists out there, who question the archaic value of black and white, I say “ Damn the torpedoes of doubt and hold your course.”Special thanks and gratitude for the long term support of George Powell and his skateboard company for publishing and marketing my skateboard art over the last 40 years. It has allowed me to develop other forms of black and white art, payed for needed therapy and other important developments in this “tortured artists” life. http://www.vcjgraphics.com/ Join the newsletter and be part of the East Forest Council Community. This week Jan talks to George Powell, a journalist and film maker who has lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro for the past 6 years. He's chosen to live in one of Rio's smaller favelas, and has some interesting insights into life as the only gringo in the village, how to survive preferring rugby to football in the land that worships the Beautiful Game, and why the country's president, Jair Bolsonaro is hitting an all-time popularity level despite the rampant spread of Coronavirus, and the devastating lack of quality healthcare for the poor. Brazil is now second in the Coronavirus stakes to the United States with over 100,000 deaths and over 3 million cases, and Rio is one of the country's hotspots. But as COVID fatigue sets in, there's little sign of the pandemic coming under control. If you'd like to know more about ONERIO, the project George talks about, that helps young favela children through rugby, then check out www.umrio.org and www.facebook.com/UMRioONERio

For 13 years, she has been an attorney, public servant, advocate, and criminal justice reformer. She currently works as the Director of Legal Affairs for Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis in Precinct One, where she helped draft and finalize the settlement in the misdemeanor bail reform lawsuit, ODonnell v. Harris County. Immediately before this, she was the Director of Criminal Justice Reform at the Texas Civil Rights Project. As the director, Natalia was counsel and advocate for hundreds of parents along the United States-Mexico border after being forcibly separated from their children under Trump's unlawful family separation policy. She also settled TCRP's debtor’s prison lawsuit against the City of El Paso to end the City’s practice of incarcerating people for their inability to pay traffic tickets, expanded the project’s investigations against the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and its cruel treatment of its prisoners in solitary confinement, and worked with local partners to decrease criminalization of juveniles who interface with the criminal justice system. Her opponent is incumbent George Powell in the Democratic Primary. Arlene Hecht is running unopposed in the Republican Primary. Sema Hernandez: I am the daughter of immigrants. The sacrifices my parents and grandparents made are part of what fueled my decision to run for the U.S. Senate. I grew up in a migrant working family, and I understand the struggle of people who are burdened by crushing debt, job insecurity, environmental racism, and lack of healthcare coverage. These are the common struggles of the working class. I worked in acute healthcare for six years, caring for insured and uninsured patients. Through my background in healthcare, I experienced first-hand the flaws of our healthcare system. As a mother, I became a volunteer baseball coach and a volunteer organizer for local baseball organizations, where I served on the board of directors. Our 2018 primary campaign for U.S. Senate was historic, promoting progressive issues, policies, and solutions. From 2003 to 2008, George Powell III had been living in that town which had a large soldier presence and working on music. He appreciated the solider population there but found the Killeen police mistreated soldiers. He notes one instance where soldiers would be playing his music too loud and they got pulled over and ticketed by the police officers. He wrote a song where he thanked soldiers but addressed the harassment the police gave to him (https://www.justiceforgeorgepowell.com/thank-you-soldiers). The Netflix Original Exhibit A also notes that he acted aggressively towards police officers and could identify him. In 2013, there were a series of armed robberies at convenience stores in Killeen, Texas. There was video evidence from many of the stores and this evidence was released by Crimestoppers to the public with the promise of $1000 for people who could provide information. The hotel keeper of the place George was staying at reported George to Crimestoppers. While the face may be similar, the height difference was a major player. All of the witnesses testified the armed man was 5’6” to 5’8” but George was 6’3”. Video evidence also appeared to corroborate the same thing until Michael Knox, who runs a forensic consulting firm, did a 3d animation where the person in the video appeared to be 6’1” at a certain angle (where the man in the video was tilted). Police are also reported to have been singling George out in particular in photo lineups, according to one convenience store worker in the Exhibit A article. The use of forensics convinced the jurors enough to convict him and he’s been serving 11 out of 28 years. A pen pal of George read about his case independent of him and ended up calling the forensic science division in Texas about the video. They learned that the evidence Knox had created had been done on a program he was not trained in - additionally there were other clearer images where the man in the video was standing straight that Knox should have compared George to instead. Grant, one of the individuals from a forensics team in Texas, had done a 3D scan of George and compared this to still images from the video, showing that the man who had done the crime and George were too completely different people. Knox’s inexperienced model can be fought under Texas’s Junk Science Law, also known as SB 344, which has a writ of habeas corpus filed if facts at the time of his or her application show: • Relevant scientific evidence that is currently available was not available at the time of his or her conviction because it was not ascertainable through reasonable diligence, • The current scientific evidence would be admissible under the Texas Rules of Evidence at a trial held on the application date, and • If the current scientific evidence had been presented at the original trial, based upon a preponderance of evidence the person would not have been convicted. George is currently being represented by the Innocence Project of Texas with his attorneys Mike Ware and Walter Reaves, Jr. Despite being released on bond – Mr. Powell still faces a potential life sentence as they look to retry him. Cara Solomon and George Powell think personal stories – gathering them and reading them – are the way to bridge differences and build a stronger sense of community in Boston. Solomon is the founder and Powell is one of the most successful story ambassadors at Everyday Boston, a nonprofit organization that is attempting to knit together Boston one person's story at a time. Solomon and Powell are about as different as can be. Solomon is white and a former newspaper reporter for the Hartford Courant and Seattle Times who grew up in Wayland. Powell, who is black, grew up in Roxbury and spent eight years in prison. They would seem to have little in common, but listening to them on The Codcast they seem to have a powerful connection.
