Representative Dean Phillips, once a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination, recently voiced empathetic support for a grieving military father who faced arrest following an outburst at President Joe Biden's recent State of the Union Address. Drawing on his own experience as a Gold Star Son, Phillips expressed understanding for the father's pain over losing his son during the ill-fated Afghanistan evacuation in 2021. While Phillips underscored the importance of maintaining decorum during the President's address, he questioned the rationale behind the father's arrest, especially given the obvious intensity of his grief. The grief-stricken father was identified as Steve Nikoui, 51, who lost his son, a U.S. Marine, during the disorderly retreat from Afghanistan. During President Biden's speech, Nikoui, unable to contain his emotions, stood up in the House Galleries and interrupted the address by repeatedly shouting 'Abbey Gate', the location where his son had lost his life. His passionate outburst led to his removal from the Galleries and subsequently, to his arrest. The charges levelled against Nikoui, which range from crowding and obstructing to incommoding, are currently under heavy scrutiny. Phillips isn't the sole voice questioning the severity of the charges. Michael McCaul, the House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman from Texas and member of the Republican party, has recently joined the chorus demanding that the charges against the bereaved father be dropped. Expressing her own displeasure, the mother of another victim of the Afghan evacuation criticizes President Biden, labeling him 'pathetic' for mispronouncing her daughter's name during the State of the Union. When a grenade thrown from insurgents bounced off Michael's chest, he could have escaped. Instead, he threw himself onto the live grenade, shielding his fellow soldiers from the immediate explosion. We cried, we laughed and we told stories... this episode with guest Shanna Jackman is filled with emotion and information. Along her road performing music, Shanna has worn many hats including a reserve police officer and dispatcher for her local police department. Her dedication to public service is second to none! Paul passed away at the age of 76 just days before we sat down. If you don't know the story, here you go... Massachusetts native, US Army Sergeant First Class Jared Monti, died while serving in Afghanistan in 2006. Jared was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2009. Jared's father, Paul, has driven Jared's truck since his death as a way to remember and feel connected to him. Paul's story inspired the 2013 #1 Country Song recorded by Lee Brice, “I Drive Your Truck” written by Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington, and Jimmy Yeary. The truck, a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 became a symbol of a father's love and a place would take friends for rides and tell the story of Jared's life. Shanna was fortunate to be able to spend time riding in the truck with Paul. Shanna and Paul became friends through their shared experiences supporting The Gold Star Families and all military memorial organizations.   Shanna Jackman, while known for her many performances of the National Anthem (for the Boston Bruins, Red Sox, Celtics, Revolution and many other numerous charity, Military and sporting events), is also a Nashville recording artist having released her first self titled EP in 2013. Charles Strange didn't initially want his son, Michael, to join the military. But when Michael turned 18, he joined the U.S. Navy and soon became an expert in cryptography, serving alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq and Afghanistan. “I’ve had the pleasure of serving with several Texans, and they were all born fighters. It must be something in the water down there.” — Major Rusty Bradley, Author ‘Lions of Kandahar.” Sergeant First Class Riley Stephens was born and raised in the sleepy farming town of Tolar, Texas about 45 minutes south of Ft. Worth. Places like Tolar are only further proof that some of our nation’s most elite warriors come from those towns barely discernible on a map, places that we might mention with the inevitable follow up question, “Where is that?” Six deployments, a litany of schools, and a legendary Special Operations career as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant. Sergeant First Class Riley Stephens, a true legend of the Special Operations community, some of his life depicted in the epic novel “Lions of Kandahar.” SFC Stephens took his last stand on September 28, 2012 providing covering fire for his unit in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. All of the words about Riley and an incredible career as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant pale in comparison though, to the memories of a father who witnessed his son’s first steps and supported him through his most painful tribulations as a Special Operations warrior. Mick Stephens might’ve been Riley’s father, but he was also his closest friend and on that day in September, Mick experienced one of the greatest tragedies that can possibly befall a father, he lost his first born.

Kris Hager is a Gold Star Father. His oldest son, SSG Joshua Ryan Hager, Army Ranger, was KIA on February 22nd 2007 in Iraq. He has another son who served 10 years as an Officer in the Coast Guard. Now at the age of 66, Kris has been blessed with a little boy, Carson, who is 8 years old. Kris's dedication to and passion for God, Family and Country is unquestionable.  Kris's background is very diverse and begins with degrees in Economics, Finance and Accounting. From a stock broker, to deliver skipper, to owning multiple small business, to being an ordained minister and member of the National Guild of Hypnotherapists, Kris has seen many paradigm shifts in life. This week we return to the topic of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing with Emergency Medicine physician, Dr. Bryan Canterbury. Dr. Canterbury was one of many medical professionals, but only a few ER docs, who ran to the finish line on that sunny April day to treat the hundreds of victims injured after 2 bombs exploded during Boston’s hallowed race. With his typical candor & humility, Dr. Canterbury remarks on the differences between working traumas in the street versus the natural habitat of the ER physician, a well stocked & staffed hospital.   Note:  I would like to correct the name mentioned in the podcast. The man who held the femoral artery of Jeff Bauman is name Carlos Arredondo, a Costa Rican-American and Gold Star Father. Hager was killed in action Feb. 22, 2007.  He was an Army Ranger and had served at the 6th RTB prior to transferring to Ft. Carson, CO for deployment.  Josh loved being a soldier and was proud to serve his country. Josh is survived by his wife Heather and son Bayley.  Joshua’s mother Lois lives in Broomfield, CO and his father, Kris Hager, in Venice, FL.  Joshua’s brother Aaron is in the USCG and is stationed in Miami, FL.  Joshua now has a younger brother, Carson, who loves to say “Hi Joshie” as he looks at the portrait presented by Mr. Reagan. Mrs. Jane Brown is his maternal grandmother and lives in MI.  Mrs. Dorine Hager lives in Littleton, CO.  Joshua’s grandfather, Zack Hager served in WWII as a glider pilot and passed away in April of 2008.   They are laid to rest beside each other at Ft. His areas of specialization are the rehabilitation  conditioning of athletic injuries, sport specific strength and conditioning, and  implementing SportsVision training. Since 2007, Dr. Falkel has focused his interests and time to supporting the families of our  Special Operations warriors. After his son, SSG Chris Falkel, was killed in the 54 hour battle of Mari Ghar in Afghanistan on 8 Aug 2005, Dr. Falkel started Junior's Bullet Pen  Company – which is dedicated to keeping the memory of his warrior, his hero, his son  alive through the sale of 7.62 cal. bullet pens. To date, he has made more than  350,000 pens by hand and given over $400,000 in donations, products and fund raising for various SOF foundations. He wrote the book, The Making of  OUR Warrior, about SSG Falkel with his SFODA 316 teammates, and over 6000 copies  of the book have been sold or donated to worthy organizations. Currently serves as Director of Gold Star Programs for Task Force Dagger Foundation. Serves on the Board of Directors of the Dancing Angels Foundation, which was started to continue the memory of CW2 Duane Cantrell and his two beautiful daughters who were tragically killed in a house fire in 2012. Dancing Angels Foundation is dedicated to providing dance scholarships and support for young dancers so they can pursue their  dreams and love of dance.
