Grandia II Part 5: Mareg's Bara Tiddies! Square Roots - Episode 461 Level Up Starts at 01:53:00 Johnny gets to see Mareg's big manly chest in a pre-rendered cutscene, and he does NOT shut up about it throughout this episode. Sure, the Dreamcast game's pre-rendered cutscenes have the look of 1996's Tekken 2, and the scene is bizarrely animated, but Johnny hasn't been on a date in a while so give him a break. Oh yeah, this week in GameArts's Grandia II we also discover a sword that may have a second purpose! AND GO TO THE MOON! Also: Proud Boy King! Vanessa Will Never See That Ten Dollars! But things get weird in this chunk of Game Arts's Grandia II, where we put down a little girl who has been giving a magical third eye, meet a religious fundamentalist who Johnny suspects is gonna be a villain, and finally get to cuddle up to Young Pope Daddy Bear. We ask all the important questions, like what is a geohound? A guy looking for rocks? A risk breaker? A dog looking for rocks? We can't be sure, but we do know one thing: Ryudo is a big ol' asshole. Inside every cynic, there is a disappointed idealist. Grandia II felt like an RPG ahead of its time in 2000, with sophisticated active-time battles, smart underlying systems, and clever writing anchored by Ryudo, Grandia II's sarcastic protagonist. Today's episode of Retro Encounter discusses the characters, mechanics, and first-half story of Grandia II, especially how its modern touches and angst contrast against the earnest optimism of the first Grandia.
Welcome to Missed Checkpoints, a show where the hosts Marqus and Dante revisit older games from the last few years that we may have missed and discuss them as a group. Apologies but you know what it is, it wouldn't be Missed Checkpoints without us missing deadlines. Luckily we had time to record this last episode and it was a treat covering Grandia II. I appreciate everyone that chatted with me when I first had this idea for a podcast. Anyone that ever voted in a poll for the fan's choice months. Anyone that downloaded an episode, listened to an episode, or shared with a friend. You all are the real MVP for supporting in your own way and for that I sincerely value you and the support you gave us. I failed to mention on the episode but I also appreciate every guest we've had too. Huge shoutouts to Tim, Re, Jonas, and brother Trevor. Even when we were shorthanded, they came in the clutch and fit right in with our dynamic. 10/10 would recommend having awesome people in your life that would support you and your podcasting endeavors. Great Guests, Great Experience! We've had highs, we've had lows, we've had many disagreements, and even more missed recording sessions but I couldn't have picked a more fun group to do this with. It's been an absolute pleasure doing Missed Checkpoints with my bros for the last 4+ years. Y'all are the best and I'm super grateful to call y'all my homies! On today's episode of the King of Games 2000 we've got Geoff, Kelly, and special guest Chris Coplien of the Retro Hangover podcast breaking down whether it's Grandia II or Skies of Arcadia moving on to the next round of our tournament to crown the greatest game of the year 2000. Somehow, by sheer luck, all four Dreamcast games in this tourney got matched up with each other in round one, and somehow the system's two most notable RPGs are in the same matchup together. (Question of the week) 16bitwars-nomad: Here’s a crazy question...if you could go back in time and change the following, which would it be and why… A) The Nintendo and Sony collaboration continued and a cd add-on was released for the SNES. B) The 3DO, Atari Jaguar, and Philips CD-I were successful and became dominant in the video game world. C) Sony used regular SD cards in the Vita and actually supported it. D) The Dreamcast was released with a DVD player and dominated its generation. E) The Atari Lynx sold more than the Gameboy and Gamegear. As a Sega guy, I would@have to pick D. The Dreamcast was an awesome system with great games and was as powerful as the PS2 if not more. But it was hindered by its cd drive and Poor decisions by Sega. Runner up would have to be C. Sony had a great system with the vita but expensive memory cards and lack of support doomed it. I look forward to hearing from everyone else!! Usually console anniversaries are celebrated events, but when the Dreamcast turned 20 years old it seemed like an afterthought -- assuming anyone thought about it at all. What happened? Sean and Vinnk discuss their Dreamcast memories, and speculate why the 20th wasn't as big as the 10th or even the 15th. Vinnk's Future Retro is Grandia II, his favorite Dreamcast game. And Sean talks about playing lots of... chess?? We are a day later, but that's ok because Sean and Marc have plenty of stuff to discuss on this week's episode. Nintendo revealed a bunch of stuff about Splatoon and also about themselves. Who would have thought Nintendo theme park rides would be a reality? Yeah... probably no one. However, that's happening so we are going to talk about that, plus Nintendo earns its first profit in a long time and lots more. Activision also revealed they made money, but gave out some bad news about World of Warcraft losing 3 million subscribers. There's also information about Guitar Hero LIVE and Destiny too. EA gave out release years for Mirror's Edge and Titanfall 2. SEGA is not happy with their sales (go figure), and there's a Dishonored Remastered coming too. Not to mention, there's even more out there like Grandia II remaster coming to Steam as well.
