DTN's sixth annual Digital Yield Tour wrapped up just days ago on August 11th, 2023, and the tour's conclusion coincided with a USDA report that largely agreed with the event's findings. Which is to say — 2023 started out rough, but the corn crop in particular is making a stunning comeback. Today, DTN Farm Business Editor Katie Dehlinger joins us to reveal both the national and the state level yield estimates for corn and soybeans that Gro Intelligence revealed during the tour, including county by county estimates for 10 key midwestern states that reveal a crop that's highly variable– mostly depending on how much rain a given area received during a sporadically droughty season. We'll dig into the realities behind the numbers, talk through reactions from DTN market analysts, from the data scientists at Gro Intelligence, and think about what is still possible in the few weeks that remain between now and when harvest starts to get underway. We'll dig into the biggest surprises, where weather might be headed, and how these estimates might affect market conditions.See the full DTN Digital Yield Tour story here.

Growing up in Ethiopia in the 1980s and ‘90s, Sara Menker saw the devastating effects of drought and famine firsthand. Later as a commodities trader on Wall Street, Sara realized that a major driver of food insecurity around the world was a lack of good data to predict weather events, crop yields, and food prices. That realization led Sara to found her company, Gro Intelligence, in 2014. This week on How I Built This Lab, Sara shares how Gro Intelligence uses a combination of artificial intelligence and human expertise to help private companies, nonprofits, and governments better understand agricultural markets and address global food challenges. Plus, Sara talks about building the Gro team and the importance of founders understanding all of the different jobs within their companies. The October WASDE dropped Wednesday, October 12th, and this month's estimates include insight from farmer surveys as harvest gets underway across the country. Markets have rallied as USDAs numbers inch closer to those reported by Gro Intelligence and other yield tours, though outside influences are holding down prices in some regions.DTN's Todd Hultman joins us to help us link the data from the recent September 30th report with today's global figures, and to unpack what changes in inputs, exports, and global demand might mean for prices in the months ahead. We'll dig into record setting wheat and corn crops, and shape up possibilities for livestock markets in the fourth quarter of 2022. More on rising interest rates, shipping disruptions, and the state of Eastern Europe's grain market.
DTN's 5th annual Digital Yield Tour wrapped up just days ago on August 12th, 2022, and yield estimates meaningfully lower than USDA's left some surprised and others feeling validated. We'll dig into the meaning behind the numbers, talk through the hyper-local effects that many farmers are dealing with, and discuss what might still be ahead as weather continues to create uncertainty in the weeks ahead. We'll discuss drought impacts, delayed planting, and when DTN/progressive farmer readers and listeners might hear the next updated from Gro Intelligence.

Sara Menker (Founder and CEO, Gro Intelligence) joins Hank on Straight Talk to discuss the impact growing up in Africa had on her, global food security and climate change, and founding Gro Intelligence to address the fundamental flaws in our food system. Northern Ireland will need to lose more than 1 million sheep and cattle to meet its new legally binding climate emissions targets, according to an industry-commissioned analysis seen by the Guardian. In Indiana, 9,200 acres of farmland to be used for a massive solar farm In May 2022, a number of experts started speaking out about the inevitability of coming food shortages. The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned of "the specter of a global food shortage in coming months" unless international action is taken,6 and The Economist featured "The Coming Food Catastrophe" on its cover.7 During the 2022 World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, told attendees that "the anxiety about access to food at a reasonable price globally is hitting the roof,"8 and President Biden, in March 2022, told reporters that food shortages are "going to be real."9 A May 30, 2022, Reuters report10 showed the global food price index had risen 58.5% above the 2014-2016 average as of April 2022, due to a convergence of "post-pandemic global demand, extreme weather, tightening food stocks, high energy prices, supply chain bottlenecks ... export restrictions and taxes" combined with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Together, Russia and Ukraine account for as much as 12% of all globally traded calories,11 making the timing of the conflict a particularly perilous one for the world. Not surprisingly, countries that are heavily reliant on imports have seen the steepest food price increases. In early April 2022, Rockefeller Foundation president Rajiv Shah and Sara Menker, founder of Gro Intelligence, published an op-ed12 in The New York Times blaming "Putin's war" for the looming food crisis but, clearly, we were already on the path toward global famine long before Putin entered Ukraine. Weather, for example — whether natural or manufactured — plays an important role. As noted by Shah and Menker, "historic drought" plagues many parts of the world, including the U.S. Midwest, Brazil, Argentina, North Africa, the Middle East13 and India.14 Meanwhile, China's agricultural lands are drowning under the "heaviest rains in 60 years."15 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As if rising sea levels and fiercer cyclones weren't enough to worry about, the climate crisis is already cutting crop yields and could lead to widespread food shortages. That's the grave warning from the United Nations, which cautions that farmers won't meet a projected 50% increase in food demand by 2050 if greenhouse gas emissions stay high. In a special episode, Stephanie Flanders tackles how to feed almost 10 billion people, the projected population of the planet in three decades. She turned to four leaders in global agriculture at Bloomberg's New Economy Forum in Singapore for their insight. Technology will play a starring role, says Werner Baumann, chairman of German healthcare and agricultural giant Bayer AG. One Bayer project involves developing "short-stature" corn that resists stalk breakage and can be planted more densely. Cargill Inc. Chairman David MacLennan insists genetically modified organisms must be part of the solution, though GMOs are a controversial component of modern agriculture with significant opposition. Finally, the panelists had some ideas regarding a tweet from the world's richest man, who last month offered to put up $6 billion if a UN official could prove the money would solve world hunger. Sara Menker, chief executive of agricultural analytics firm Gro Intelligence, suggests Elon Musk's money would be best spent creating a new financial institution to help modernize how many crops are traded. More fundamentally, Musk's money could build roads and crop storage facilities so farmers in developing nations could more easily get their products to market, says Alloysius Attah of Farmerline, which helps farmers embrace technology. There have been various warnings of a global food crisis for almost 10 years. In fact, many believe that by 2050, worldwide production of food will have to increase by 70 percent. However, one expert feels that is not accurate, and that the food crisis could arrive as soon as 2027. Guest: Sara Menker, founder and CEO of Gro Intelligence, a company that pulls and consolidates data from around the world as it pertains to agriculture. She is also a trustee of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies and a trustee of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture. James titled today’s discussion “Soybeans on the front line of the US China tariff dispute.” What follows is a wide-ranging discussion, covering the impact of the tariffs on the global soybean pricing and production in the US, but also Brazil and Argentina. Most importantly, we discuss the impact of the tariffs on Chinese consumption, particularly the impact on Chinese pork production, and how that in turn affects inflation.
