Episode overview: In this conversation, David Ogundeko shares the journey of Funema, an impact-focused alternative investment firm operating for nine years across Nigeria, South Africa, and the US. He discusses his approach to venture building for early-stage founders, why Africa needs a unique investment approach, and how his firm addresses the "chicken and egg" challenge that idea-stage founders face: needing traction to raise funds while needing the right talent to gain that traction. Andile Masuku engages Ogundeko on the evolution of venture building in Africa, from being "mocked" five to six years ago to now becoming an essential element in the ecosystem. Throughout the conversation, Ogundeko makes a compelling case for why Africa's tech ecosystem requires patient capital with 15-25 year horizons rather than traditional 10-year VC fund lifecycles. Key topics: - The evolution of Funema's venture building model over nine years - Why service-based businesses can evolve into stronger tech companies - Misalignment between traditional VC timelines and African market realities - The importance of founder emotional connection to problems they're solving - How AI is democratising education and knowledge across the continent - Funema's ambitious plans to scale venture building across Africa Notable points: 1. Ogundeko developed his venture building thesis after working at Seedstars in 2016, flipping their model to focus on founders with their own ideas 2. Funema has a portfolio of 20+ companies built over nine years of operation The firm prefers working with founders who start with service models to develop deeper market understanding before scaling with technology 3. Traditional 10-year VC timelines are insufficient for African tech development, with Ogundeko advocating for 15-25 year investment horizons 4. Funema is planning to reach 1,000 founders over the next two years and train 100,000 venture builders over five years What makes Funema's approach distinctive is his patience and belief in deep market understanding: "We didn't exactly start out with a very sexy business model. But the learnings that we've been able to get from the market, which we've automated into a platform, is becoming a product that you can call a pure tech business."

On August 7th, I had the opportunity to speak with Selam Ayele Kebede to learn from her Tech Journey on Habesha in Tech club on Clubhouse. Selam is a brilliant woman who have an exemplary life and tech journey. Selam & I went to Bahir Dar University and completed our degree same year, 2010. Selam studied Electrical Engineering and she was also active in the University's student clubs. Her Tech Journey is an interesting one because it was impacted by the rapid tech world changes. The Finish company, Nokia, that had the largest market share in the mobile market was hit by the growing IOS & Android. This change impacted all students at Aalto University and drove everyone including Selam to look for an entrepreneurship route and think outside the predefined paths. Selam was able to adjust to this change and bring herself to the newly growing e-commerce and digital market in East Africa and for that she joined an Ethiopian startups like soleRebels, Gro Intelligence, Seedstars, & GrowthAfrica. Now Selam Ayele Kebede is the Director of Antler in Kenya. Antler is a global early-stage venture capital firm that invests in the tech startups. Thank you Selam Ayele Kebede for sharing your tech journey with us. Have a listen!

Entrevista con Alex Santana de Seedstars
Most people skip over Bolivia when talking about Latin America’s startup ecosystem. The landlocked 11-million person country has yet to develop a thriving homegrown tech scene, but it shows tremendous potential for growth. It often just takes one or two success stories to catalyze the whole industry. Carlos Jordan, founder of UltraCasas and UltraCreditos, might be just the entrepreneur Bolivia needs. After raising the biggest round in Bolivian history from international investors, Carlos became one of the most influential actors in Bolivia’s nascent tech ecosystem. He takes this responsibility seriously, reserving a fierce optimism for Bolivia’s development potential. I sat down with Carlos on this episode of Crossing Borders to discuss Bolivia’s nascent entrepreneurial ecosystem, Carlos’ role in building the industry, the inflection point for his business, UltraCasas, and what it was like to raise funding from abroad. We also talk about doing business in Bolivia and the future of its tech ecosystem. Carlos is the first Bolivian entrepreneur to join me on Crossing Borders, so check out this episode to learn more about one of Latin America’s youngest tech economies. Why can’t I find an apartment online in Bolivia? When Carlos first looked for an apartment in Bolivia in 2015, he had to use the newspaper classifieds. After ten unsuccessful visits, he realized there was a need for a better solution. Everyone else in the world was looking for apartments online at this point, so why couldn’t Bolivians? Born in Bolivia and educated as an engineer in the US, Carlos seemed like just the person for the job. However, it took him more than a year of puzzling before UltraCasas was born. “We thought we knew a lot, when in reality we didn’t know anything,” says Carlos. Find out how Carlos got international mentorship that helped UltraCasas reach its inflection point. From Bolivia to the world When Carlos tried to raise funding for UltraCasas in Bolivia, he was met with blank stares. A year later, he was in Switzerland with Seedstars, raising the biggest round in Bolivian history. Carlos has since grown UltraCasas from 50 views a month to over 23,000 weekly views and 60,000 monthly leads; he feels ready to tackle the regional market, even against huge competitors in Brazil and Chile. He hasn’t stuck to a single product, either. Carlos is developing a technology to help new apartment and homeowners get mortgages; stay tuned for the launch of UltraCreditos in November. Find out how Carlos tapped into his network in the US, Europe, and Latin America to create a regional growth strategy for one of Bolivia’s first successful startups. The best ten years in Bolivian history Bolivia is growing incredibly quickly, although it is still lags behind the rest of Latin America, especially in tech. Part of the challenge of doing business in Bolivia lies in its complex geography; businesses must provide solutions for people living everywhere from the humid Amazon rainforest to the freezing Andean high plateaus. However, Carlos is confident Bolivia will surge forward. Why? An extremely young, talented, and entrepreneurial population that is increasingly joining the middle class. Despite Bolivia’s rapid growth, Carlos still feels that the ecosystem is missing several pieces that are preventing its development. Check out the rest of this episode to find out what Carlos thinks Bolivia needs to move forward in tech. Bolivia is one of Latin America’s youngest tech ecosystems. While its young, talented population bodes well for Bolivia’s development, the local economy is still missing a lot of pieces that are holding it back from a tech revolution. UltraCasas and UltraCreditos are some of the first examples of homegrown tech that provide solutions for the Bolivian economy. Carlos recognizes the significance of his success for Bolivia’s growth; the country needs more success stories before it can surge. Rich Tanksley is the Senior Vice President of Special Projects at the Nigerian-American consultancy, NeuBridges. Formerly the CEO of Pulse.ng, Rich continues to be the Ringier-owned online media platform's brand ambassador. Prior to that, he spent three years working at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Ghana as a senior faculty member and headed up Africa operations for Seedstars. In this conversation with Andile Masuku - taped at Afrobytes Tech Conference 2017 - Rich speaks on some of the gaps he perceives within Africa's innovation culture and factors in on issues that he reckons make doing business in Africa a tricky proposition for naive outsiders. He also comments on the massive growth potential of Nigeria's commercial digital media scene.

Research. This is arguably one of the most undervalued initiatives that any business can take but interestingly, it seems that research as a strategic capability is to this day not used by many entrepreneurs and business owners and even worse ignored entirely. The other day I was interviewing Anish Shivdasani, the founder and CEO of Giraffe who happened to win the global Seedstars program and we were talking about “market liquidity” – which refers to the extent to which your market buys your businesses products and or services. Now all the worlds leading companies are involved in some form of research driven market liquidity initiative and so if you are not doing independent research into your market then you really are missing an opportunity to position you and your business as a thought leader in the space. Take my company Matt Brown Media for example, we have our own market liquidity initiative by undertaking the largest ever independent research project into the South African podcasting industry – and this is where our story begins. I reached out to Adi Zuk and Emma Du Preez from an innovative new research play called Rapid Insights to help my media company with its own research and working with them really allowed me to scale my research initiative quickly and cost effectively. In this episode, we explore why you research matters, what the benefits are when it comes to research and how you can work with data in your own business. www.rapidinsights.co.za
Mindsets. An entrepreneur’s mindset – essentially a set of working assumptions about your intelligence, talent or abilities is critically important to understand when it comes to decision making in business. You could call it decision making theory – or the reasoning behind doing something in your business or not. Often there is far more success to be found when you do decide to do something as opposed to deciding not to do something. So, let me give you some context. In this episode, I chat Anish Shivasani the founder and CEO of Giraffe about their journey disrupting the recruitment industry. Now many of you will know that they won the global Seedstars program – not just south Africa which eventually lead them to finding investment with the US based investment fund Omidyar – which was formed by the entrepreneur Pierre Omidyar, who founded the eBay auction site which is today worth an estimated US$9 billion. But here’s the funny thing. They almost didn’t enter the Seedstars completion at all – but their mindset of believing that they could win it made all the difference. In this episode, we also cover the mindset of international vc’s vs south African vc’s, when to quit or persevere as an entrepreneur and much more.

The East Africa Business Podcast: African Start ups | Investing | Entrepreneurship | Interviews
Cash is risky business, and in Kenya, mobile money is big. People living in rural areas are liable to have their life savings lost if it is kept under the mattress. Many engage in lending co-operatives whereby a community organisation acts as a bank for people who need money in an emergency. This is, however, pretty archaic and inefficient meaning people can't get instant access to cash when they need it quick. Using a digital platform that connects mobile money to these rural co-operatives, Inuka Pap is making it possible for people to get access to the funds in an instant. Waweru and I discuss what the lending landscape looks like, their social mission of providing free insurance, and the blurred lines around whether they themselves are a bank or not. As a side note, the day after I interviewed Waweru he pitched Inuka Pap at Seedstars, a global start up competition, and won the title for Kenya! You'll see that he has knack for storytelling. Also, a car alarm goes off in the background right at the end, so apologies for that… In any case, I hope you enjoy!
