He currently serves as Town Manager of St. Albans, Vermont, where he uses his econ dev background to help the small town. One of his most surprising projects was leading development of a childcare facility in rural Virginia, despite not having kids himself. The intensive childcare facility regulations and community resistance he encountered shows the breadth of challenges econ dev professionals take on. Adkins stresses public servants genuinely try to serve local needs, though projects often require compromise. There were almost as many federal ministers at Gander International Airport yesterday as there were flights. Gudie Hutchings, federal Minister of Rural Economic Development, and Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance, were there. They announced a 4.6-million-dollar investment into the airport. The money will go to build a new cold storage facility that can store up to 75 tonnes of fresh or live seafood. The CBC's Melissa Tobin was there and spoke with Minister Hutchings and Gander International Airport CEO Reg Wright.

Rural counties aren’t doing as well as urban areas, it seems, but the picture might be more complicated than you think, with some rural areas blossoming in the modern economy and others lagging behind. And if there’s anyone who knows the different chapters of rural North Carolina’s story, it’s Grant Godwin. Godwin currently serves as chair of the board of the Rural Economic Development Center after spending a long career in the private and public sector. A native North Carolinian, Grant grew up on a farm in Sampson County and learned some lessons that have lasted a lifetime. Hosted by the Institute's Community Strategies Group (CSG) and Rural Development Innovation Group (RDIG), the event focuses on the unique importance of infrastructure in fueling economic development in rural communities.
